A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
God has adjusted the weight of the winds, so seemingly imponderable, lest, if too weighty, or too light, injury should be caused. He measureth out the waters, fixing their bounds, with wisdom as His counsellor (Pro 8:27-31; Isa 40:12).

12 Who hath measured [04058] the waters [04325] in the hollow of his hand [08168], and meted out [08505] heaven [08064] with the span [02239], and comprehended [03557] the dust [06083] of the earth [0776] in a measure [07991], and weighed [08254] the mountains [02022] in scales [06425], and the hills [01389] in a balance [03976]?
27 When he prepared [03559] the heavens [08064], I was there: when he set [02710] a compass [02329] upon the face [06440] of the depth [08415]:
28 When he established [0553] the clouds [07834] above [04605]: when he strengthened [05810] the fountains [05869] of the deep [08415]:
29 When he gave [07760] to the sea [03220] his decree [02706], that the waters [04325] should not pass [05674] his commandment [06310]: when he appointed [02710] the foundations [04144] of the earth [0776]:
30 Then I was by him [0681], as one brought up [0525] with him: and I was daily [03117] [03117] his delight [08191], rejoicing [07832] always [06256] before [06440] him;
31 Rejoicing [07832] in the habitable part [08398] of his earth [0776]; and my delights [08191] were with the sons [01121] of men [0120].
12 Who hath measured [04058] the waters [04325] in the hollow of his hand [08168], and meted out [08505] heaven [08064] with the span [02239], and comprehended [03557] the dust [06083] of the earth [0776] in a measure [07991], and weighed [08254] the mountains [02022] in scales [06425], and the hills [01389] in a balance [03976]?
1 Though [1437] I speak [2980] with the tongues [1100] of men [444] and [2532] of angels [32], and [1161] have [2192] not [3361] charity [26], I am become [1096] as sounding [2278] brass [5475], or [2228] a tinkling [214] cymbal [2950].
2 And [2532] though [1437] I have [2192] the gift of prophecy [4394], and [2532] understand [1492] all [3956] mysteries [3466], and [2532] all [3956] knowledge [1108]; and [2532] though [1437] I have [2192] all [3956] faith [4102], so [5620] that I could remove [3179] mountains [3735], and [1161] have [2192] not [3361] charity [26], I am [1510] nothing [3762].
3 And [2532] though [1437] I bestow [5595] all [3956] my [3450] goods [5224] to feed [5595] the poor, and [2532] though [1437] I give [3860] my [3450] body [4983] to [2443] be burned [2545], and [1161] have [2192] not [3361] charity [26], it profiteth me [5623] nothing [3762].
4 Charity [26] suffereth long [3114], and is kind [5541]; charity [26] envieth [2206] not [3756]; charity [26] vaunteth [4068] not [3756] itself [4068], is [5448] not [3756] puffed up [5448],
5 Doth [807] not [3756] behave itself unseemly [807], seeketh [2212] not [3756] her own [1438], is [3947] not [3756] easily provoked [3947], thinketh [3049] no [3756] evil [2556];
6 Rejoiceth [5463] not [3756] in [1909] iniquity [93], but [1161] rejoiceth [4796] in the truth [225];
7 Beareth [4722] all things [3956], believeth [4100] all things [3956], hopeth [1679] all things [3956], endureth [5278] all things [3956].
8 Charity [26] never [3763] faileth [1601]: but [1161] whether [1535] there be prophecies [4394], they shall fail [2673]; whether [1535] there be tongues [1100], they shall cease [3973]; whether [1535] there be knowledge [1108], it shall vanish away [2673].
9 For [1063] we know [1097] in [1537] part [3313], and [2532] we prophesy [4395] in [1537] part [3313].
10 But [1161] when [3752] that which is perfect [5046] is come [2064], then [5119] that which is in [1537] part [3313] shall be done away [2673].
11 When [3753] I was [2252] a child [3516], I spake [2980] as [5613] a child [3516], I understood [5426] as [5613] a child [3516], I thought [3049] as [5613] a child [3516]: but [1161] when [3753] I became [1096] a man [435], I put away [2673] childish things [3516].
12 For [1063] now [737] we see [991] through [1223] a glass [2072], darkly [1722] [135]; but [1161] then [5119] face [4383] to [4314] face [4383]: now [737] I know [1097] in [1537] part [3313]; but [1161] then [5119] shall I know [1921] even as [2531] also [2532] I am known [1921].
13 And [1161] now [3570] abideth [3306] faith [4102], hope [1680], charity [26], these [5023] three [5140]; but [1161] the greatest [3187] of these [5130] is charity [26].
13 This is the portion [02506] of a wicked [07563] man [0120] with God [0410], and the heritage [05159] of oppressors [06184], which they shall receive [03947] of the Almighty [07706].
14 If his children [01121] be multiplied [07235], it is for [03926] the sword [02719]: and his offspring [06631] shall not be satisfied [07646] with bread [03899].
15 Those that remain [08300] of him shall be buried [06912] in death [04194]: and his widows [0490] shall not weep [01058].
16 Though he heap up [06651] silver [03701] as the dust [06083], and prepare [03559] raiment [04403] as the clay [02563];
17 He may prepare [03559] it, but the just [06662] shall put it on [03847], and the innocent [05355] shall divide [02505] the silver [03701].
18 He buildeth [01129] his house [01004] as a moth [06211], and as a booth [05521] that the keeper [05341] maketh [06213].
19 The rich [06223] man shall lie down [07901], but he shall not be gathered [0622]: he openeth [06491] his eyes [05869], and he is not.
20 Terrors [01091] take hold [05381] on him as waters [04325], a tempest [05492] stealeth him away [01589] in the night [03915].
21 The east [06921] wind carrieth him away [05375], and he departeth [03212]: and as a storm hurleth [08175] him out of his place [04725].
22 For God shall cast [07993] upon him, and not spare [02550]: he would fain [01272] flee [01272] out of his hand [03027].
23 Men shall clap [05606] their hands [03709] at him, and shall hiss [08319] him out of his place [04725].
1 Surely [03426] there is a vein [04161] for the silver [03701], and a place [04725] for gold [02091] where they fine [02212] it.
25 For I know [03045] that my redeemer [01350] liveth [02416], and that he shall stand [06965] at the latter [0314] day upon the earth [06083]:
26 And though after [0310] my skin [05785] worms destroy [05362] this body, yet in my flesh [01320] shall I see [02372] God [0433]:
27 Whom I shall see [02372] for myself, and mine eyes [05869] shall behold [07200], and not another [02114]; though my reins [03629] be consumed [03615] within [02436] me.
9 The righteous [06662] also shall hold [0270] on his way [01870], and he that hath clean [02890] hands [03027] shall be [03254] stronger and stronger [0555].
19 Also now, behold, my witness [05707] is in heaven [08064], and my record [07717] is on high [04791].
20 My friends [07453] scorn [03887] me: but mine eye [05869] poureth out [01811] tears unto God [0433].
21 O that one might plead [03198] for a man [01397] with God [0433], as a man [0120] pleadeth for his neighbour [01121] [07453]!
1 Moreover Job [0347] continued [03254] [05375] his parable [04912], and said [0559],
12 Behold, all ye yourselves have seen [02372] it; why then are ye thus altogether [01892] vain [01891]?
1 Surely [03426] there is a vein [04161] for the silver [03701], and a place [04725] for gold [02091] where they fine [02212] it.
10 The fear [03374] of the LORD [03068] is the beginning [07225] of wisdom [02451]: a good [02896] understanding [07922] have all they that do [06213] his commandments: his praise [08416] endureth [05975] for ever [05703].
7 The fear [03374] of the LORD [03068] is the beginning [07225] of knowledge [01847]: but fools [0191] despise [0936] wisdom [02451] and instruction [04148].
6 By mercy [02617] and truth [0571] iniquity [05771] is purged [03722]: and by the fear [03374] of the LORD [03068] men depart [05493] from evil [07451].
7 Be not wise [02450] in thine own eyes [05869]: fear [03372] the LORD [03068], and depart [05493] from evil [07451].
22 The LORD [03068] possessed [07069] me in the beginning [07225] of his way [01870], before [06924] his works [04659] of old.
23 I was set up [05258] from everlasting [05769], from the beginning [07218], or ever [06924] the earth [0776] was.
24 When there were no depths [08415], I was brought forth [02342]; when there were no fountains [04599] abounding [03513] with water [04325].
25 Before the mountains [02022] were settled [02883], before [06440] the hills [01389] was I brought forth [02342]:
26 While as yet he had not made [06213] the earth [0776], nor the fields [02351], nor the highest part [07218] of the dust [06083] of the world [08398].
30 Then I was by him [0681], as one brought up [0525] with him: and I was daily [03117] [03117] his delight [08191], rejoicing [07832] always [06256] before [06440] him;
31 Rejoicing [07832] in the habitable part [08398] of his earth [0776]; and my delights [08191] were with the sons [01121] of men [0120].
30 Then I was by him [0681], as one brought up [0525] with him: and I was daily [03117] [03117] his delight [08191], rejoicing [07832] always [06256] before [06440] him;
31 Rejoicing [07832] in the habitable part [08398] of his earth [0776]; and my delights [08191] were with the sons [01121] of men [0120].
29 And the king [04428] said [0559], Is the young man [05288] Absalom [053] safe [07965]? And Ahimaaz [0290] answered [0559], When Joab [03097] sent [07971] the king's [04428] servant [05650], and me thy servant [05650], I saw [07200] a great [01419] tumult [01995], but I knew [03045] not what it was.
63 And Isaac [03327] went out [03318] to meditate [07742] in the field [07704] at [06437] the eventide [06153]: and he lifted up [05375] his eyes [05869], and saw [07200], and, behold, the camels [01581] were coming [0935].
15 Dost thou know [03045] when God [0433] disposed [07760] them, and caused the light [0216] of his cloud [06051] to shine [03313]?
27 Then did he see [07200] it, and declare [05608] it; he prepared [03559] it, yea, and searched it out [02713].
24 For he looketh [05027] to the ends [07098] of the earth [0776], and seeth [07200] under the whole heaven [08064];
28 And unto man [0120] he said [0559], Behold, the fear [03374] of the Lord [0136], that is wisdom [02451]; and to depart [05493] from evil [07451] is understanding [0998].
