GOD APPEARS TO HIM. (Ch2 7:12-22)
the Lord appeared to Solomon by night--(See on Kg1 9:1-9). The dedication of the temple must have been an occasion of intense national interest to Solomon and his subjects. Nor was the interest merely temporary or local. The record of it is read and thought of with an interest that is undiminished by the lapse of time. The fact that this was the only temple of all nations in which the true God was worshipped imparts a moral grandeur to the scene and prepares the mind for the sublime prayer that was offered at the dedication. The pure theism of that prayer--its acknowledgment of the unity of God as well as of His moral perfections in providence and grace, came from the same divine source as the miraculous fire. They indicated sentiments and feelings of exalted and spiritual devotion, which sprang not from the unaided mind of man, but from the fountain of revelation. The reality of the divine presence was attested by the miracle, and that miracle stamped the seal of truth upon the theology of the temple-worship. |

| An house of sacrifice - This expression does not elsewhere occur. Its meaning, however, is clear. God declares that Solomon's Temple is the place whereunto all Israelites were commanded to bring their burnt-offerings and sacrifices (see Deu 12:5-6). |

2 That the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] to Solomon [08010] the second time [08145], as he had appeared [07200] unto him at Gibeon [01391].

13 If [02005] I shut up [06113] heaven [08064] that there be no rain [04306], or if I command [06680] the locusts [02284] to devour [0398] the land [0776], or if I send [07971] pestilence [01698] among my people [05971];
14 If my people [05971], which are called [07121] by my name [08034], shall humble [03665] themselves, and pray [06419], and seek [01245] my face [06440], and turn [07725] from their wicked [07451] ways [01870]; then will I hear [08085] from heaven [08064], and will forgive [05545] their sin [02403], and will heal [07495] their land [0776].
