Hezekiah's sickness and recovery; his pride and his humiliation. - Ch2 32:24. As to the sickness of Hezekiah, and the miraculous sign by which the prophet Isaiah assured him of recovery, see the account in Kg2 20:1-11 and Isa 38. The Chronicle has only given us hints on this matter. ויּאמר and נתן refer to the same subject - God. Hezekiah prayed, and in consequence of his prayer God spake to him, sc. by the mouth of the prophet, and gave him a miraculous sign. Ch2 32:25 "But Hezekiah rendered not according to the benefit unto him, for his heart was proud." In his sickness he had promised to walk in humility all his days (Isa 38:15): yet he became proud after his recovery; and his pride showed itself especially in his showing all his treasures to the Babylonian embassy, in idle trust in them and in the resources at his command (cf. Kg2 20:12-15; Isa 39:1-4). "And there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem," which participated in the king's sentiments (cf. Ch2 19:10; Ch1 27:24). Isaiah proclaimed this wrath to him in the prophecy that all the treasures of the king would be carried away to Babylon, and that some of his sons should become courtiers of the king of Babylon (Kg2 20:16-18; Isa 39:5-7), to which we should perhaps also reckon the threatening prophecy in Mic 3:12. Ch2 32:26 Then Hezekiah humbled himself in his pride, and the wrath came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah (cf. Isa 39:8). The threatened judgment was postponed because of this humiliation, and broke over the royal house and the whole kingdom only at a later time in the Chaldean invasion.

⁶ Behold, the days [03117] come [0935], that all that is in thine house [01004], and that which thy fathers [01] have laid up in store [0686] until this day [03117], shall be carried [05375] to Babylon [0894]: nothing [01697] shall be left [03498], saith [0559] the LORD [03068].
⁷ And of thy sons [01121] that shall issue [03318] from thee, which thou shalt beget [03205], shall they take away [03947]; and they shall be eunuchs [05631] in the palace [01964] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894].

¹⁸ And of thy sons [01121] that shall issue [03318] from thee, which thou shalt beget [03205], shall they take away [03947]; and they shall be eunuchs [05631] in the palace [01964] of the king [04428] of Babylon [0894].

²⁴ Joab [03097] the son [01121] of Zeruiah [06870] began [02490] to number [04487], but he finished [03615] not, because there fell wrath [07110] for it [02063] against Israel [03478]; neither was the number [04557] put [05927] in the account [04557] of the chronicles [01697] [03117] of king [04428] David [01732].

¹⁰ And what cause [07379] soever shall come [0935] to you of your brethren [0251] that dwell [03427] in their cities [05892], between blood [01818] and blood [01818], between law [08451] and commandment [04687], statutes [02706] and judgments [04941], ye shall even warn [02094] them that they trespass [0816] not against the LORD [03068], and so wrath [07110] come upon you, and upon your brethren [0251]: this [03541] do [06213], and ye shall not trespass [0816].

¹ At that time [06256] Merodachbaladan [04757], the son [01121] of Baladan [01081], king [04428] of Babylon [0894], sent [07971] letters [05612] and a present [04503] to Hezekiah [02396]: for he had heard [08085] that he had been sick [02470], and was recovered [02388].
² And Hezekiah [02396] was glad [08055] of them, and shewed [07200] them the house [01004] of his precious things [05238], the silver [03701], and the gold [02091], and the spices [01314], and the precious [02896] ointment [08081], and all the house [01004] of his armour [03627], and all that was found [04672] in his treasures [0214]: there was nothing [01697] in his house [01004], nor in all his dominion [04475], that Hezekiah [02396] shewed [07200] them not.

And Hezekiah [02396] said [0559], They are come [0935] from a far [07350] country [0776] unto me, even from Babylon [0894].
⁴ Then said [0559] he, What have they seen [07200] in thine house [01004]? And Hezekiah [02396] answered [0559], All that is in mine house [01004] have they seen [07200]: there is nothing [01697] among my treasures [0214] that I have not shewed [07200] them.

¹⁴ Then came [0935] Isaiah [03470] the prophet [05030] unto king [04428] Hezekiah [02396], and said [0559] unto him, What said [0559] these men [0582]? and from whence [0370] came [0935] they unto thee? And Hezekiah [02396] said [0559], They are come [0935] from a far [07350] country [0776], even from Babylon [0894].
¹⁵ And he said [0559], What have they seen [07200] in thine house [01004]? And Hezekiah [02396] answered [0559], All the things that are in mine house [01004] have they seen [07200]: there is nothing [01697] among my treasures [0214] that I have not shewed [07200] them.

¹⁵ What shall I say [01696]? he hath both spoken [0559] unto me, and himself hath done [06213] it: I shall go softly [01718] all my years [08141] in the bitterness [04751] of my soul [05315].
