SENNACHERIB INVADES JUDAH. (2Ch. 32:1-20)
After these things, and the establishment thereof--that is, the restoration of the temple-worship. The precise date is given, Kg2 18:13. Determined to recover the independence of his country, Hezekiah had decided to refuse to pay the tribute which his father had bound himself to pay to Assyria.
Sennacherib . . . entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities--The whole land was ravaged; the strong fortresses of Ashdod (Isa 20:1) and Lachish had fallen; the siege of Libnah had commenced, when the king of Judah, doubting his ability to resist, sent to acknowledge his fault, and offer terms of submission by paying the tribute. The commencement of this Assyrian war was disastrous to Hezekiah (Kg2 18:13). But the misfortunes of the early period of the war are here passed over, as the historian hastens to relate the remarkable deliverance which God wrought for His kingdom of Judah. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The establishment thereof - literally, "the faithfulness thereof" or, in other words, "after these things had been faithfully accomplished."
Ch2 32:1-8 form a passage supplementary to Kg2 18:13-16. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Sennacherib's campaign against Judah and Jerusalem, and the annihilation of his whole army by the angel of the Lord. In 2 Kings 18 and 19, and Isa 36 and 37, we have two minute parallel accounts of this war, which threatened the existence of the kingdom of Judah, in both of which the course of this attack by the Assyrian world-power upon the kingdom of God is circumstantially narrated. The author of the Chronicle gives only a short narrative of the main events of the struggle; but, notwithstanding its brevity, supplies us with several not unessential additions to these detailed accounts. After stating that Sennacherib invaded Judah with the design of conquering the kingdom for himself (Ch2 32:1), the author of the Chronicle described the preparations which Hezekiah made for the defence of the capital in case it should be besieged (Ch2 32:2-8). Then we have an account of Sennacherib's attempts to get Jerusalem into his power, by sending his generals, who sought to induce the people to submit by boastful speeches, and by writing threatening letters to Hezekiah (Ch2 32:9-19); and, finally, of Hezekiah's prayer to God for help, and the answer to his prayer - the wonderful annihilation of the Assyrian army (Ch2 32:20-23). The purpose of the chronicler in narrating these events was a didactic one: he wishes to show how God the Lord helped the pious King Hezekiah in this danger to his kingdom, and humbled the presumption of Sennacherib confiding in the might of his powerful army. For this purpose, a brief rhetorical summary of the main events of the struggle and its issues was sufficient. As to the facts, see the commentary on 2 Kings 18f. and Isa. 36f.
Ch2 32:1
The didactic and rhetorical character of the narrative is manifest in the very form of the introductory statement. Instead of the chronological statement of Kg2 18:13, we find the loose formula of connection: after these events and this fidelity (cf. Ch2 31:20), Sennacherib came (בּא) and entered into Judah (ביהוּדה ויּבא), and besieged the fenced cities, and thought (ויּאמר) to break (conquer) them for himself. He had already taken a number of them, and had advanced as far as Lachish in the south-west of Judah, when he made the attempt to get Jerusalem into his power; cf. Kg2 18:13.
Ch2 32:2-8
Preparations of Hezekiah for the strengthening and defending of Jerusalem. - We find an account of this neither in 2 Kings 18 nor in Isa 36; but the fact is confirmed both by Isa 22:8-11, and by the remark Kg2 20:20 (cf. Ch2 32:30 of our chapter).
Ch2 32:2-4
When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib advanced, and his face was to war against Jerusalem, i.e., that he purposed to capture Jerusalem, he consulted with his princes and his valiant men to cover the waters of the springs which were outside the city; and they helped him, brought much people together, and covered all the springs, and the brook which ran through the midst of the land. סתם does not denote to obstruct, but only to hide by covering and conducting the water into subterranean channels. The brook which flowed through the midst of the land is the Gihon, which was formed by the waters flowing from the springs, and was dried up by these springs being covered and the water diverted. For further information, see on Ch2 32:30. The object of this measure is stated in the words which follow: Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water? i.e., why should we provide them with much water, when they advance against the city and besiege it? The plural, kings of Assyria, is rhetorical, as in Ch2 28:16.
Ch2 32:5
The fortification of Jerusalem. יתחזּק, he showed himself strong, courageous, as in Ch2 15:8; Ch2 23:1. And he built the whole wall which was broken, i.e., he strengthened it by building up the breaches and defective places; cf. Isa 22:9. The words על־המּגדּלות ויּעל are obscure, since the translation "he mounted on the towers" has no meaning. But if יעל be taken as a Hiph., "he caused to ascend upon the towers," the object is wanting; and if we supply walls, it is arbitrary, for we might just as well suppose it to be machines which he caused to be carried to the top of the towers for defence against the enemy (Ch2 26:15). The lxx have wholly omitted the words, and the translation of the Vulg., et exstruxit turres desuper, appears to be only a guess, but is yet perhaps correct, and presupposes the reading מגדּלות עליה ויּעל, "and brought up upon it towers," in favour of which Ewald also decides. This conjecture is in any case simpler than Bertheau's, that על ויעל is a false transcription of ועליה: "he built the whole wall, and towers upon it, and outside was the other wall," and is therefore to be preferred to it. The "other wall" enclosed the lower city (Acra). This, too, was not first built by Hezekiah; he only fortified it anew, for Isa 22:11 already speaks of two walls, between which a body of water had been introduced: see on Ch2 32:30. He fortified also the Millo of the city of David (see on Ch1 11:8), and supplied the fortifications with weapons (שׁלח, a weapon of defence; see on Joe 2:8) in multitude, and with shields; cf. Ch2 26:14.
Ch2 32:6-8
And, moreover, he set captains of war over the people, i.e., the populace of Jerusalem, assembled them in the open space at the city gate (which gate is not stated; cf. Neh 8:1, Neh 8:16), and addressed them in encouraging words; cf. Ch2 30:22. On Ch2 32:7, cf. Ch2 20:15, Deu 31:6, etc. "For with us is more than with him." רב, quite general, the closer definition following in Ch2 32:8 : "With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Jahve, our God, to help us." An arm of flesh = frail human power; cf. Isa 21:3 : their (the Egyptians') horses are flesh, not spirit; Jer 17:5; Psa 56:5. "And the people leaned themselves on (i.e., trusted in) the words of Hezekiah." These statements are not inconsistent with the account in Kg2 18:14-16, that Hezekiah began to negotiate with the Assyrian king Sennacherib when he had begun to take the fenced cities of the land unto Lachish, promised to pay him tribute, and actually paid the sum demanded, employing for that purpose even the sheet gold on the temple doors. These negotiations are passed over, not only in our narrative, but also in Isa 36, because they had no influence upon the after course and the issue of the war. Sennacherib was not induced to withdraw by the payment of the sum demanded, and soon after the receipt of it he sent a detachment from Lachish against Jerusalem, to summon the city to surrender. The fortification of Jerusalem which the Chronicle records began before these negotiations, and was continued while they were in progress. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
After, &c. - An emphatical preface, signifying, that notwithstanding all his zeal for God, God saw fit to exercise him with a sore trial. And God ordered it at this time, that he might have an opportunity of shewing himself strong, on the behalf of his returning people. It is possible, we may be in the way of our duty, and yet meet with trouble and danger. God permits this, for the trial of our confidence in him, and the manifestation of his care over us. |

After these things - God did not permit this pious prince to be disturbed till he had completed the reformation which he had begun. |
13 Now in the fourteenth [0702] [06240] year [08141] of king [04428] Hezekiah [02396] did Sennacherib [05576] king [04428] of Assyria [0804] come up [05927] against all the fenced [01219] cities [05892] of Judah [03063], and took [08610] them.
1 In the year [08141] that Tartan [08661] came [0935] unto Ashdod [0795], (when Sargon [05623] the king [04428] of Assyria [0804] sent [07971] him,) and fought [03898] against Ashdod [0795], and took [03920] it;
13 Now in the fourteenth [0702] [06240] year [08141] of king [04428] Hezekiah [02396] did Sennacherib [05576] king [04428] of Assyria [0804] come up [05927] against all the fenced [01219] cities [05892] of Judah [03063], and took [08610] them.
14 And Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063] sent [07971] to the king [04428] of Assyria [0804] to Lachish [03923], saying [0559], I have offended [02398]; return [07725] from me: that which thou puttest [05414] on me will I bear [05375]. And the king [04428] of Assyria [0804] appointed [07760] unto Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063] three [07969] hundred [03967] talents [03603] of silver [03701] and thirty [07970] talents [03603] of gold [02091].
15 And Hezekiah [02396] gave [05414] him all the silver [03701] that was found [04672] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and in the treasures [0214] of the king's [04428] house [01004].
16 At that time [06256] did Hezekiah [02396] cut off [07112] the gold from the doors [01817] of the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068], and from the pillars [0547] which Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063] had overlaid [06823], and gave [05414] it to the king [04428] of Assyria [0804].
1 After [0310] these things [01697], and the establishment [0571] thereof, Sennacherib [05576] king [04428] of Assyria [0804] came [0935], and entered [0935] into Judah [03063], and encamped [02583] against the fenced [01219] cities [05892], and thought [0559] to win [01234] them for himself.
2 And when Hezekiah [03169] saw [07200] that Sennacherib [05576] was come [0935], and that he was purposed [06440] to fight [04421] against Jerusalem [03389],
3 He took counsel [03289] with his princes [08269] and his mighty men [01368] to stop [05640] the waters [04325] of the fountains [05869] which were without [02351] the city [05892]: and they did help [05826] him.
4 So there was gathered [06908] much [07227] people [05971] together [06908], who stopped [05640] all the fountains [04599], and the brook [05158] that ran [07857] through the midst [08432] of the land [0776], saying [0559], Why should the kings [04428] of Assyria [0804] come [0935], and find [04672] much [07227] water [04325]?
5 Also he strengthened [02388] himself, and built up [01129] all the wall [02346] that was broken [06555], and raised it up [05927] to the towers [04026], and another [0312] wall [02346] without [02351], and repaired [02388] Millo [04407] in the city [05892] of David [01732], and made [06213] darts [07973] and shields [04043] in abundance [07230].
6 And he set [05414] captains [08269] of war [04421] over the people [05971], and gathered them together [06908] to him in the street [07339] of the gate [08179] of the city [05892], and spake [01696] comfortably [03824] to them, saying [0559],
7 Be strong [02388] and courageous [0553], be not afraid [03372] nor dismayed [02865] for [06440] the king [04428] of Assyria [0804], nor for all the multitude [01995] that is with him: for there be more [07227] with us than with him:
8 With him is an arm [02220] of flesh [01320]; but with us is the LORD [03068] our God [0430] to help [05826] us, and to fight [03898] our battles [04421]. And the people [05971] rested [05564] themselves upon the words [01697] of Hezekiah [03169] king [04428] of Judah [03063].
5 Every day [03117] they wrest [06087] my words [01697]: all their thoughts [04284] are against me for evil [07451].
5 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; Cursed [0779] be the man [01397] that trusteth [0982] in man [0120], and maketh [07760] flesh [01320] his arm [02220], and whose heart [03820] departeth [05493] from the LORD [03068].
3 Therefore are my loins [04975] filled [04390] with pain [02479]: pangs [06735] have taken hold [0270] upon me, as the pangs [06735] of a woman that travaileth [03205]: I was bowed down [05753] at the hearing [08085] of it; I was dismayed [0926] at the seeing [07200] of it.
6 Be strong [02388] and of a good courage [0553], fear [03372] not, nor be afraid [06206] of them [06440]: for the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], he it is that doth go [01980] with thee; he will not fail [07503] thee, nor forsake [05800] thee.
15 And he said [0559], Hearken [07181] ye, all Judah [03063], and ye inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389], and thou king [04428] Jehoshaphat [03092], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] unto you, Be not afraid [03372] nor dismayed [02865] by reason [06440] of this great [07227] multitude [01995]; for the battle [04421] is not yours, but God's [0430].
7 Be strong [02388] and courageous [0553], be not afraid [03372] nor dismayed [02865] for [06440] the king [04428] of Assyria [0804], nor for all the multitude [01995] that is with him: for there be more [07227] with us than with him:
22 And Hezekiah [03169] spake [01696] comfortably [03820] unto all the Levites [03881] that taught [07919] the good [02896] knowledge [07922] of the LORD [03068]: and they did eat [0398] throughout the feast [04150] seven [07651] days [03117], offering [02076] peace [08002] offerings [02077], and making confession [03034] to the LORD [03068] God [0430] of their fathers [01].
16 So the people [05971] went forth [03318], and brought [0935] them, and made [06213] themselves booths [05521], every one [0376] upon the roof of his house [01406], and in their courts [02691], and in the courts [02691] of the house [01004] of God [0430], and in the street [07339] of the water [04325] gate [08179], and in the street [07339] of the gate [08179] of Ephraim [0669].
1 And all the people [05971] gathered themselves together [0622] as one [0259] man [0376] into the street [07339] that was before [06440] the water [04325] gate [08179]; and they spake [0559] unto Ezra [05830] the scribe [05608] to bring [0935] the book [05612] of the law [08451] of Moses [04872], which the LORD [03068] had commanded [06680] to Israel [03478].
14 And Uzziah [05818] prepared [03559] for them throughout all the host [06635] shields [04043], and spears [07420], and helmets [03553], and habergeons [08302], and bows [07198], and slings [07050] to cast stones [068].
8 Neither shall one [0376] thrust [01766] another [0251]; they shall walk [03212] every one [01397] in his path [04546]: and when they fall [05307] upon the sword [07973], they shall not be wounded [01214].
8 And he built [01129] the city [05892] round about [05439], even from Millo [04407] round about [05439]: and Joab [03097] repaired [02421] the rest [07605] of the city [05892].
30 This same Hezekiah [03169] also stopped [05640] the upper [05945] watercourse [04161] [04325] of Gihon [01521], and brought it straight [03474] down [04295] to the west side [04628] of the city [05892] of David [01732]. And Hezekiah [03169] prospered [06743] in all his works [04639].
11 Ye made [06213] also a ditch [04724] between the two walls [02346] for the water [04325] of the old [03465] pool [01295]: but ye have not looked [05027] unto the maker [06213] thereof, neither had respect [07200] unto him that fashioned [03335] it long ago [07350].
15 And he made [06213] in Jerusalem [03389] engines [02810], invented [04284] by cunning men [02803], to be on the towers [04026] and upon the bulwarks [06438], to shoot [03384] arrows [02671] and great [01419] stones [068] withal. And his name [08034] spread [03318] far abroad [07350]; for he was marvellously [06381] helped [05826], till [03588] he was strong [02388].
9 Ye have seen [07200] also the breaches [01233] of the city [05892] of David [01732], that they are many [07231]: and ye gathered together [06908] the waters [04325] of the lower [08481] pool [01295].
1 And in the seventh [07637] year [08141] Jehoiada [03077] strengthened [02388] himself, and took [03947] the captains [08269] of hundreds [03967], Azariah [05838] the son [01121] of Jeroham [03395], and Ishmael [03458] the son [01121] of Jehohanan [03076], and Azariah [05838] the son [01121] of Obed [05744], and Maaseiah [04641] the son [01121] of Adaiah [05718], and Elishaphat [0478] the son [01121] of Zichri [02147], into covenant [01285] with him.
8 And when Asa [0609] heard [08085] these words [01697], and the prophecy [05016] of Oded [05752] the prophet [05030], he took courage [02388], and put away [05674] the abominable idols [08251] out of all the land [0776] of Judah [03063] and Benjamin [01144], and out of the cities [05892] which he had taken [03920] from mount [02022] Ephraim [0669], and renewed [02318] the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068], that was before [06440] the porch [0197] of the LORD [03068].
16 At that time [06256] did king [04428] Ahaz [0271] send [07971] unto the kings [04428] of Assyria [0804] to help [05826] him.
30 This same Hezekiah [03169] also stopped [05640] the upper [05945] watercourse [04161] [04325] of Gihon [01521], and brought it straight [03474] down [04295] to the west side [04628] of the city [05892] of David [01732]. And Hezekiah [03169] prospered [06743] in all his works [04639].
20 And the rest [03499] of the acts [01697] of Hezekiah [02396], and all his might [01369], and how he made [06213] a pool [01295], and a conduit [08585], and brought [0935] water [04325] into the city [05892], are they not written [03789] in the book [05612] of the chronicles [01697] [03117] of the kings [04428] of Judah [03063]?
8 And he discovered [01540] the covering [04539] of Judah [03063], and thou didst look [05027] in that day [03117] to the armour [05402] of the house [01004] of the forest [03293].
9 Ye have seen [07200] also the breaches [01233] of the city [05892] of David [01732], that they are many [07231]: and ye gathered together [06908] the waters [04325] of the lower [08481] pool [01295].
10 And ye have numbered [05608] the houses [01004] of Jerusalem [03389], and the houses [01004] have ye broken down [05422] to fortify [01219] the wall [02346].
20 And thus did [06213] Hezekiah [03169] throughout all Judah [03063], and wrought [06213] that which was good [02896] and right [03477] and truth [0571] before [06440] the LORD [03068] his God [0430].
20 And for this cause Hezekiah [03169] the king [04428], and the prophet [05030] Isaiah [03470] the son [01121] of Amoz [0531], prayed [06419] and cried [02199] to heaven [08064].
21 And the LORD [03068] sent [07971] an angel [04397], which cut off [03582] all the mighty men [01368] of valour [02428], and the leaders [05057] and captains [08269] in the camp [04264] of the king [04428] of Assyria [0804]. So he returned [07725] with shame [01322] of face [06440] to his own land [0776]. And when he was come [0935] into the house [01004] of his god [0430], they that came forth [03329] of his own bowels [04578] slew [05307] him there with the sword [02719].
22 Thus the LORD [03068] saved [03467] Hezekiah [03169] and the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389] from the hand [03027] of Sennacherib [05576] the king [04428] of Assyria [0804], and from the hand [03027] of all other, and guided [05095] them on every side [05439].
23 And many [07227] brought [0935] gifts [04503] unto the LORD [03068] to Jerusalem [03389], and presents [04030] to Hezekiah [03169] king [04428] of Judah [03063]: so that he was magnified [05375] in the sight [05869] of all nations [01471] from thenceforth [0310].
9 After [0310] this did Sennacherib [05576] king [04428] of Assyria [0804] send [07971] his servants [05650] to Jerusalem [03389], (but he himself laid siege against Lachish [03923], and all his power [04475] with him,) unto Hezekiah [03169] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and unto all Judah [03063] that were at Jerusalem [03389], saying [0559],
10 Thus saith [0559] Sennacherib [05576] king [04428] of Assyria [0804], Whereon do ye trust [0982], that ye abide [03427] in the siege [04692] in Jerusalem [03389]?
11 Doth not Hezekiah [03169] persuade [05496] you to give [05414] over yourselves to die [04191] by famine [07458] and by thirst [06772], saying [0559], The LORD [03068] our God [0430] shall deliver [05337] us out of the hand [03709] of the king [04428] of Assyria [0804]?
12 Hath not the same Hezekiah [03169] taken away [05493] his high places [01116] and his altars [04196], and commanded [0559] Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389], saying [0559], Ye shall worship [07812] before [06440] one [0259] altar [04196], and burn incense [06999] upon it?
13 Know [03045] ye not what I and my fathers [01] have done [06213] unto all the people [05971] of other lands [0776]? were the gods [0430] of the nations [01471] of those lands [0776] any ways [03201] able [03201] to deliver [05337] their lands [0776] out of mine hand [03027]?
14 Who was there among all the gods [0430] of those nations [01471] that my fathers [01] utterly destroyed [02763], that could [03201] deliver [05337] his people [05971] out of mine hand [03027], that your God [0430] should be able [03201] to deliver [05337] you out of mine hand [03027]?
15 Now therefore let not [03808] Hezekiah [02396] deceive [05377] you, nor persuade [05496] you on this manner, neither yet believe [0539] him: for no god [0433] of any nation [01471] or kingdom [04467] was able [03201] to deliver [05337] his people [05971] out of mine hand [03027], and out of the hand [03027] of my fathers [01]: how much less shall your God [0430] deliver [05337] you out of mine hand [03027]?
16 And his servants [05650] spake [01696] yet more against the LORD [03068] God [0430], and against his servant [05650] Hezekiah [03169].
17 He wrote [03789] also letters [05612] to rail [02778] on the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478], and to speak [0559] against him, saying [0559], As the gods [0430] of the nations [01471] of other lands [0776] have not delivered [05337] their people [05971] out of mine hand [03027], so shall not the God [0430] of Hezekiah [03169] deliver [05337] his people [05971] out of mine hand [03027].
18 Then they cried [07121] with a loud [01419] voice [06963] in the Jews' speech [03066] unto the people [05971] of Jerusalem [03389] that were on the wall [02346], to affright [03372] them, and to trouble [0926] them; that they might take [03920] the city [05892].
19 And they spake [01696] against [05921] the God [0430] of Jerusalem [03389], as against the gods [0430] of the people [05971] of the earth [0776], which were the work [04639] of the hands [03027] of man [0120].
