Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Honey - See the margin. It is doubtful whether bee-honey was liable to first-fruits. The sort here intended may therefore be that which, according to Josephus, was manufactured from dates. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Came abroad - As Soon as the king extended that command to all the parts of his kingdom, which, Ch2 31:4, was confined to them that dwelt in Jerusalem. Honey - Or, dates, as the Hebrew writers generally, understand this word, which were given to them, because of the sweetness of their taste in some sort resembling honey. For the law requires no tithes, but of the fruits of trees, or of the earth, or of beasts. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Brought - the first-fruits - These were principally for the maintenance of the priests and Levites; they brought tithes of all the produce of the field, whether commanded or not, as we see in the instance of honey, which was not to be offered to the Lord, Lev 2:11, yet it appears it might be offered to the priests as first-fruits, or in the way of tithes. |
4 Moreover he commanded [0559] the people [05971] that dwelt [03427] in Jerusalem [03389] to give [05414] the portion [04521] of the priests [03548] and the Levites [03881], that they might be encouraged [02388] in the law [08451] of the LORD [03068].
11 No meat offering [04503], which ye shall bring [07126] unto the LORD [03068], shall be made [06213] with leaven [02557]: for ye shall burn [06999] no leaven [07603], nor any honey [01706], in any offering [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801].
