the greater house--that is, the holy places, the front or outer chamber (see Kg1 6:17). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The greater house - i. e., the holy place, or main chamber of the temple, intervening between the porch and the holy of holies (so in Ch2 3:7).
He cieled with fir tree - Rather, "he covered," or "lined." The reference is not to the ceiling, which was entirely of wood, but to the walls and floor, which were of stone, with a covering of planks (marginal reference). The word translated "fir" bears probably in this place, not the narrow meaning which it has in Ch2 2:8, where it is opposed to cedar, but a wider one, in which cedar is included.
Palm trees and chains - See Kg1 6:29. The "chains" are supposed to be garlands or festoons. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Greater house - The holy place, which was thrice as large as the holy of holies. |

8 Send [07971] me also cedar [0730] trees [06086], fir trees [01265], and algum trees [0418], out of Lebanon [03844]: for I know [03045] that thy servants [05650] can skill [03045] to cut [03772] timber [06086] in Lebanon [03844]; and, behold, my servants [05650] shall be with thy servants [05650],
7 He overlaid [02645] also the house [01004], the beams [06982], the posts [05592], and the walls [07023] thereof, and the doors [01817] thereof, with gold [02091]; and graved [06605] cherubims [03742] on the walls [07023].
