HIRAM SENDS TO CONGRATULATE SOLOMON. (Kg1 5:1-6)
Hiram . . . sent his servants unto Solomon--the grandson of David's contemporary [KITTO]; or the same Hiram [WINER and others]. The friendly relations which the king of Tyre had cultivated with David are here seen renewed with his son and successor, by a message of condolence as well as of congratulation on his accession to the throne of Israel. The alliance between the two nations had been mutually beneficial by the encouragement of useful traffic. Israel, being agricultural, furnished corn and oil, while the Tyrians, who were a commercial people, gave in exchange their PhÅnician manufactures, as well as the produce of foreign lands. A special treaty was now entered into in furtherance of that undertaking which was the great work of Solomon's splendid and peaceful reign. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Hiram, king of Tyre - Menander of Ephesus, who wrote a history of Tyre in Greek, founded upon native Tyrian documents, about 300 B.C., mentioned this Hiram as the son of Abibaal king of Tyre, and said that he ascended the throne when he was nineteen; that he reigned thirty-four years, and, dying at the age of fifty-three, was succeeded by his son Baleazar. Menander spoke at some length of the dealings of Hiram with Solomon.
Sent his servants - This appears to have been an embassy of congratulation. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
Solomon's negotiations with Hiram of Tyre. - Kg1 5:1. When king Hiram of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king in the place of David, he sent his servants, i.e., an embassage, to Solomon, to congratulate him (as the Syriac correctly explains) on his ascent of the throne, because he had been a friend of David the whole time (כּל־הימים, i.e., as long as both of them David and Hiram were kings). On Hiram and the length of his reign, see the remarks on Sa2 5:11. This is passed over in the Chronicles as having no essential bearing upon the building of the temple.
Kg1 5:2-3
Solomon thereupon communicated to Hiram, by means of an embassy, his intention to carry out the building of the temple which his father projected, and asked him for building wood from Lebanon for the purpose. From the words, "Thou knowest that my father David could not build," etc., it is evident that David had not only been busily occupied for a long time with the plan for building a temple, but that he had already commenced negotiations with Hiram on the matter; and with this Ch1 22:4 agrees. "To the name of Jehovah:" this expression is based upon Deu 12:5 and Deu 12:11 : "the place which the Lord shall choose to put His name there, or that His name may dwell there." The name of Jehovah is the manifestation of the divine nature in a visible sign as a real pledge of His presence (see at Kg1 12:5), and not merely numen Jovae quatenus ab hominibus cognoscitur, colitur, celebratur (Winer, Thenius). Hence in 2 Sam 7, to which Solomon refers, בּית לי בּנה (Kg1 5:5, Kg1 5:7) alternates with לשׁמי בּית בּנה (Kg1 5:13). On the obstacle which prevented it, "because of the war, with which they (the enemies) had surrounded me," see at Sa2 7:9. On the construction, סבב with a double accusative, compare the very similar passage, Psa 109:3, which fully establishes the rendering we have given, so that there is no necessity to assume that מלחמה, war, stands for enemies (Ewald, 317, b.).
Kg1 5:4
"And now Jehovah my God has given me rest roundabout," such as David never enjoyed for a permanency (cf. Sa2 7:1). "No adversary is there." This is not at variance with Kg1 11:14, for Hadad's enterprise belonged to a later period (see the comm. on that passage). "And no evil occurrence:" such as the rebellions of Absalom and Sheba, the pestilence at the numbering of the people, and other events which took place in David's reign.
Kg1 5:5
"Behold, I intend to build." אמר followed by an infinitive, as in Exo 2:14; Sa2 21:16. "As Jehovah spake to David;" viz., Sa2 7:12, Sa2 7:13.
Kg1 5:6-7
"And now command that they fell me cedars from Lebanon." We may see from Kg1 5:8 that Solomon had also asked for cypresses; and according to the parallel passage Ch2 2:6., he had asked for a skilful artist, which is passed over here, so that it is only in Kg1 7:13-14 that we find a supplementary notice that Hiram had sent one. It is evident from this request, that that portion of Lebanon on which the cedars suitable for building wood grew, belonged to the kingdom of Hiram. The cedar forest, which has been celebrated from very ancient times, was situated at least two days' journey to the north of Beirut, near the northernmost and loftiest summits of the range, by the village of Bjerreh, to the north of the road which leads to Baalbek and not far to the east of the convent of Canobin, the seat of the patriarch of the Maronites, although Seetzen, the American missionaries, and Professor Ehrenberg found cedars and cedar groves in other places on northern Lebanon (see Rob. Pal. iii. 440,441, and Bibl. Res. pp. 588ff.). The northern frontier of Canaan did not reach as far as Bjerreh (see at Num 34:8-9). "My servants shall be with thy servants," i.e., shall help them in the felling of the wood. "And the wages of thy servants will I give to thee altogether as thou sayest." "For thou knowest that no one among us is skilful in felling trees like the Sidonians." This refers to the knowledge of the most suitable trees, of the right time for felling, and of the proper treatment of the wood. The expression Sidonians stands for Phoenicians generally, since Sidon was formerly more powerful than Tyre, and that portion of Lebanon which produced the cedars belonged to the district of Sidon. The inhabitants of Sidon were celebrated from time immemorial as skilful builders, and well versed in mechanical arts (compare Rob. Pal. iii. 421ff., and Movers, Phoenizier, ii. 1, pp. 86ff.).
Hiram rejoiced exceedingly at this proposal on the part of Solomon, and praised Jehovah for having given David so wise a son as his successor (Kg1 7:7). It must have been a matter of great importance to the king of Tyre to remain on good terms with Israel, because the land of Israel was a granary for the Phoenicians, and friendship with such a neighbour would necessarily tend greatly to promote the interests of the Phoenician commerce. The praise of Jehovah on the part of Hiram does not presuppose a full recognition of Jehovah as the only true God, but simply that Hiram regarded the God of Israel as being as real a God as his own deities. Hiram expresses a fuller acknowledgment of Jehovah in Ch2 2:11, where he calls Jehovah the Creator of heaven and earth; which may be explained, however, from Hiram's entering into the religious notions of the Israelites, and does not necessarily involve his own personal belief in the true deity of Jehovah.
Kg1 5:8-11
Hiram then sent to Solomon, and promised in writing (בּכתב, Ch2 2:10) to comply with his wishes. אלי שׁלחתּ אשׁר את, "that which thou hast sent to me," i.e., hast asked of me by messenger. ברושׁים are not firs, but cypresses. "My servants shall bring down (the trees) from Lebanon to the sea, and I will make them into rafts (i.e., bind them into rafts and have them floated) upon the sea to the place which thou shalt send (word) to me, and will take them (the rafts) to pieces there, and thou wilt take (i.e., fetch them thence)." The Chronicles give Yafo, i.e., Joppa, Jaffa, the nearest harbour to Jerusalem on the Mediterranean Sea, as the landing-place (see at Jos 19:46). "And thou wilt do all my desire to give bread for my house," i.e., provisions to supply the wants of the king's court. "The שׂכר mentioned in Kg1 5:6 was also to be paid" (Thenius). This is quite correct; but Thenius is wrong when he proceeds still further to assert, that the chronicler erroneously supposed this to refer to the servants of Hiram who were employed in working the wood. There is not a word of this kind in the Chronicles; but simply Solomon's promise to Hiram (Kg1 5:9): "with regard to the hewers (the fellers of the trees), I give thy servants wheat 20,000 cors, and barley 20,000 cors, and wine 20,000 baths, and oil 20,000 baths." This is omitted in our account, in which the wages promised in Kg1 5:6 to the Sidonian fellers of wood are not more minutely defined. On the other hand, the payment for the wood delivered by Solomon to Hiram, which is not mentioned in the Chronicles, is stated here in Kg1 5:11. "Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 cors of wheat as food (מכּלת, a contraction of מאכלת, from אכל; cf. Ewald, 79, b.) for his house (the maintenance of his royal court), and 20 cors of beaten oil; this gave Solomon to Hiram year by year," probably as long as the delivery of the wood or the erection of Solomon's buildings lasted. These two accounts are so clear, that Jac. Capp., Gramt., Mov., Thenius, and Bertheau, who have been led by critical prejudices to confound them with one another, and therefore to attempt to emend the one from the other, are left quite alone. For the circumstance that the quantity of wheat, which Solomon supplied to Hiram for his court, was just the same as that which he gave to the Sidonian workmen, does not warrant our identifying the two accounts. The fellers of the trees also received barley, wine, and oil in considerable quantities; whereas the only other thing which Hiram received for his court was oil, and that not common oil, but the finest olive oil, namely 20 cors of כּתית שׁמן, i.e., beaten oil, the finest kind of oil, which was obtained from the olives when not quite ripe by pounding them in mortars, and which had not only a whiter colour, but also a purer flavour than the common oil obtained by pressing from the ripe olives (cf. Celsii Hierobot. ii. pp. 349f., and Bhr, Symbolik, i. p. 419). Twenty cors were 200 baths, i.e., according to the calculations of Thenius, about ten casks (1 cask = 6 pails; 1 pail = 72 cans). If we bear in mind that this was the finest kind of oil, we cannot speak of disproportion to the quantity of wheat delivered. Thenius reckons that 20,000 cors of wheat were about 38,250 Dresden scheffeln (? sacks).
Kg1 5:12
The remark that "the Lord gave Solomon wisdom" refers not merely to the treaty which Solomon made with Hiram, through which he obtained materials and skilled workmen for the erection of the house of God (Thenius), but also to the wise use which he made of the capacities of his own subjects for this work. For this verse not only brings to a close the section relating to Solomon's negotiations with Hiram, but it also forms an introduction to the following verses, in which the intimation given by Solomon in Kg1 5:6, concerning the labourers who were to fell wood upon Lebanon in company with Hiram's men, is more minutely defined. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Hiram king of Tyre - It must have been at the beginning of Solomon's reign that these ambassadors were sent; and some suppose that the Hiram mentioned here is different from him who was the friend of David; but there seems no very solid reason for this supposition. As Hiram had intimate alliance with David, and built his palace, Sa2 5:11, he wished to maintain the same good understanding with his son, of whose wisdom he had no doubt heard the most advantageous accounts; and he loved the son because he always loved the father, for Hiram was ever a lover of David. |
1 And Hiram [02438] king [04428] of Tyre [06865] sent [07971] his servants [05650] unto Solomon [08010]; for he had heard [08085] that they had anointed [04886] him king [04428] in the room of his father [01]: for Hiram [02438] was ever [03117] a lover [0157] of David [01732].
2 And Solomon [08010] sent [07971] to Hiram [02438], saying [0559],
3 Thou knowest [03045] how that David [01732] my father [01] could [03201] not build [01129] an house [01004] unto the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] his God [0430] for [06440] the wars [04421] which were about him on every side [05437], until the LORD [03068] put [05414] them under the soles [03709] of his feet [07272].
4 But now the LORD [03068] my God [0430] hath given me rest [05117] on every side [05439], so that there is neither adversary [07854] nor evil [07451] occurrent [06294].
5 And, behold, I purpose [0559] to build [01129] an house [01004] unto the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] my God [0430], as the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto David [01732] my father [01], saying [0559], Thy son [01121], whom I will set [05414] upon thy throne [03678] in thy room, he shall build [01129] an house [01004] unto my name [08034].
6 Now therefore command [06680] thou that they hew [03772] me cedar trees [0730] out of Lebanon [03844]; and my servants [05650] shall be with thy servants [05650]: and unto thee will I give [05414] hire [07939] for thy servants [05650] according to all that thou shalt appoint [0559]: for thou knowest [03045] that there is not among us any [0376] that can skill [03045] to hew [03772] timber [06086] like unto the Sidonians [06722].
12 And the LORD [03068] gave [05414] Solomon [08010] wisdom [02451], as he promised [01696] him: and there was peace [07965] between Hiram [02438] and Solomon [08010]; and they two [08147] made [03772] a league [01285] together [08147].
11 And Solomon [08010] gave [05414] Hiram [02438] twenty [06242] thousand [0505] measures [03734] of wheat [02406] for food [04361] to his household [01004], and twenty [06242] measures [03734] of pure [03795] oil [08081]: thus gave [05414] Solomon [08010] to Hiram [02438] year [08141] by year [08141].
9 My servants [05650] shall bring them down [03381] from Lebanon [03844] unto the sea [03220]: and I will convey [07760] them by sea [03220] in floats [01702] unto the place [04725] that thou shalt appoint [07971] me, and will cause them to be discharged [05310] there, and thou shalt receive [05375] them: and thou shalt accomplish [06213] my desire [02656], in giving [05414] food [03899] for my household [01004].
46 And Mejarkon [04313], and Rakkon [07542], with the border [01366] before [04136] Japho [03305].
10 And, behold, I will give [05414] to thy servants [05650], the hewers [02404] that cut [03772] timber [06086], twenty [06242] thousand [0505] measures [03734] of beaten [04347] wheat [02406], and twenty [06242] thousand [0505] measures [03734] of barley [08184], and twenty [06242] thousand [0505] baths [01324] of wine [03196], and twenty [06242] thousand [0505] baths [01324] of oil [08081].
8 And Hiram [02438] sent [07971] to Solomon [08010], saying [0559], I have considered [08085] the things which thou sentest [07971] to me for: and I will do [06213] all thy desire [02656] concerning timber [06086] of cedar [0730], and concerning timber [06086] of fir [01265].
10 So Hiram [02438] gave [05414] Solomon [08010] cedar [0730] trees [06086] and fir [01265] trees [06086] according to all his desire [02656].
11 Then Huram [02361] the king [04428] of Tyre [06865] answered [0559] in writing [03791], which he sent [07971] to Solomon [08010], Because the LORD [03068] hath loved [0160] his people [05971], he hath made [05414] thee king [04428] over them.
7 Then he made [06213] a porch [0197] for the throne [03678] where he might judge [08199], even the porch [0197] of judgment [04941]: and it was covered [05603] with cedar [0730] from one side of the floor [07172] to the other [07172].
8 From mount [02022] Hor [02023] ye shall point out [08376] your border unto the entrance [0935] of Hamath [02574]; and the goings forth [08444] of the border [01366] shall be to Zedad [06657]:
9 And the border [01366] shall go on [03318] to Ziphron [02202], and the goings out [08444] of it shall be at Hazarenan [02704]: this shall be your north [06828] border [01366].
13 And king [04428] Solomon [08010] sent [07971] and fetched [03947] Hiram [02438] out of Tyre [06865].
14 He was a widow's [0802] [0490] son [01121] of the tribe [04294] of Naphtali [05321], and his father [01] was a man [0376] of Tyre [06876], a worker [02790] in brass [05178]: and he was filled [04390] with wisdom [02451], and understanding [08394], and cunning [01847] to work [06213] all works [04399] in brass [05178]. And he came [0935] to king [04428] Solomon [08010], and wrought [06213] all his work [04399].
6 But who is able [06113] [03581] to build [01129] him an house [01004], seeing the heaven [08064] and heaven [08064] of heavens [08064] cannot contain [03557] him? who am I then, that I should build [01129] him an house [01004], save only [0518] to burn sacrifice [06999] before [06440] him?
8 And Hiram [02438] sent [07971] to Solomon [08010], saying [0559], I have considered [08085] the things which thou sentest [07971] to me for: and I will do [06213] all thy desire [02656] concerning timber [06086] of cedar [0730], and concerning timber [06086] of fir [01265].
7 And it came to pass, when Hiram [02438] heard [08085] the words [01697] of Solomon [08010], that he rejoiced [08055] greatly [03966], and said [0559], Blessed [01288] be the LORD [03068] this day [03117], which hath given [05414] unto David [01732] a wise [02450] son [01121] over this great [07227] people [05971].
13 He shall build [01129] an house [01004] for my name [08034], and I will stablish [03559] the throne [03678] of his kingdom [04467] for [05704] ever [05769].
12 And when thy days [03117] be fulfilled [04390], and thou shalt sleep [07901] with thy fathers [01], I will set up [06965] thy seed [02233] after [0310] thee, which shall proceed [03318] out of thy bowels [04578], and I will establish [03559] his kingdom [04467].
16 And Ishbibenob [03430], which was of the sons [03211] of the giant [07497], the weight [04948] of whose spear [07013] weighed three [07969] hundred [03967] shekels of brass [05178] in weight [04948], he being girded [02296] with a new [02319] sword, thought [0559] to have slain [05221] David [01732].
14 And he said [0559], Who made [07760] thee [0376] a prince [08269] and a judge [08199] over us? intendest [0559] thou to kill [02026] me, as thou killedst [02026] the Egyptian [04713]? And Moses [04872] feared [03372], and said [0559], Surely [0403] this thing [01697] is known [03045].
14 And the LORD [03068] stirred up [06965] an adversary [07854] unto Solomon [08010], Hadad [01908] the Edomite [0130]: he was of the king's [04428] seed [02233] in Edom [0123].
1 And it came to pass, when the king [04428] sat [03427] in his house [01004], and the LORD [03068] had given him rest [05117] round about [05439] from all his enemies [0341];
4 But now the LORD [03068] my God [0430] hath given me rest [05117] on every side [05439], so that there is neither adversary [07854] nor evil [07451] occurrent [06294].
3 They compassed [05437] me about also with words [01697] of hatred [08135]; and fought [03898] against me without a cause [02600].
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest [01980], and have cut off [03772] all thine enemies [0341] out of thy sight [06440], and have made [06213] thee a great [01419] name [08034], like unto the name [08034] of the great [01419] men that are in the earth [0776].
13 And king [04428] Solomon [08010] raised [05927] a levy [04522] out of all Israel [03478]; and the levy [04522] was thirty [07970] thousand [0505] men [0376].
5 And he said [0559] unto them, Depart [03212] yet for three [07969] days [03117], then come again [07725] to me. And the people [05971] departed [03212].
11 Then there shall be a place [04725] which the LORD [03068] your God [0430] shall choose [0977] to cause his name [08034] to dwell [07931] there; thither shall ye bring [0935] all that I command [06680] you; your burnt offerings [05930], and your sacrifices [02077], your tithes [04643], and the heave offering [08641] of your hand [03027], and all your choice [04005] vows [05088] which ye vow [05087] unto the LORD [03068]:
5 But unto the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] your God [0430] shall choose [0977] out of all your tribes [07626] to put [07760] his name [08034] there, even unto his habitation [07933] shall ye seek [01875], and thither thou shalt come [0935]:
4 Also cedar [0730] trees [06086] in abundance [0369] [04557]: for the Zidonians [06722] and they of Tyre [06876] brought [0935] much [07230] cedar [0730] wood [06086] to David [01732].
11 And Hiram [02438] king [04428] of Tyre [06865] sent [07971] messengers [04397] to David [01732], and cedar [0730] trees [06086], and carpenters [02796], and masons [07023] [068]: and they built [01129] David [01732] an house [01004].
11 And Hiram [02438] king [04428] of Tyre [06865] sent [07971] messengers [04397] to David [01732], and cedar [0730] trees [06086], and carpenters [02796], and masons [07023] [068]: and they built [01129] David [01732] an house [01004].
