Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Obadiah feared the Lord greatly--Although he did not follow the course taken by the Levites and the majority of pious Israelites at that time of emigration into Judah (Ch2 11:13-16), he was a secret and sincere worshipper. He probably considered the violent character of the government, and his power of doing some good to the persecuted people of God as a sufficient excuse for his not going to worship in Jerusalem. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Obadiah's name, "servant of Yahweh," indicates his religious character. It corresponds to the modern Arabic name Abdallah. Ahab could scarcely have been ignorant of Obadiah's faithfulness to Yahweh; and it tells in favor of the monarch's tolerance that he should have maintained an adherent of the old religion in so important an office. There seems to be no doubt that the worst deeds of Ahab's reign sprang less from his own free will and natural disposition than from the evil counsels, or rather perhaps the imperious requirements, of his wife. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
Obadiah
In such a time as the reign of Ahab and Jezebel a believer's true place was by Elijah's side. Obadiah is a warning type of the men of God who adhere to the world while still seeking to serve God. The secret of the Lord, and the power of the Lord were with Elijah, the separated servant.

Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Obadiah - Being valued by Ahab for his great prudence and fidelity, and therefore indulged as to the worship of the calves and Baal. But how could he and some other Israelites be said to fear the Lord, when they did not go up to Jerusalem to worship, as God had commanded? Although they seem not to be wholly excusable in this neglect, yet because they worshipped God in spirit and truth, and performed all moral duties to God and their brethren, and abstained from idolatry, being kept from Jerusalem by violence, God bares with their infirmity herein. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Obadiah feared the Lord greatly - He was a sincere and zealous worshipper of the true God, and his conduct towards the persecuted prophets was the full proof both of his piety and humanity. |
13 And the priests [03548] and the Levites [03881] that were in all Israel [03478] resorted [03320] to him out of all their coasts [01366].
14 For the Levites [03881] left [05800] their suburbs [04054] and their possession [0272], and came [03212] to Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389]: for Jeroboam [03379] and his sons [01121] had cast them off [02186] from executing the priest's office [03547] unto the LORD [03068]:
15 And he ordained [05975] him priests [03548] for the high places [01116], and for the devils [08163], and for the calves [05695] which he had made [06213].
16 And after [0310] them out of all the tribes [07626] of Israel [03478] such as set [05414] their hearts [03824] to seek [01245] the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] came [0935] to Jerusalem [03389], to sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068] God [0430] of their fathers [01].
9 The fear [03374] of the LORD [03068] is clean [02889], enduring [05975] for ever [05703]: the judgments [04941] of the LORD [03068] are true [0571] and righteous [06663] altogether [03162].
20 But [1161] in [1722] a great [3173] house [3614] there are [2076] not [3756] only [3440] vessels [4632] of gold [5552] and [2532] of silver [693], but [235] also [2532] of wood [3585] and [2532] of earth [3749]; and [2532] some [3739] [3303] to [1519] honour [5092], and [1161] some [3739] to [1519] dishonour [819].
21 If [1437] a man [5100] therefore [3767] purge [1571] himself [1438] from [575] these [5130], he shall be [2071] a vessel [4632] unto [1519] honour [5092], sanctified [37], and [2532] meet [2173] for the master's use [1203], and prepared [2090] unto [1519] every [3956] good [18] work [2041].
