DAVID REVIEWING THE ARMIES. (Sa2 18:1-4)

David numbered the people that were with him--The hardy mountaineers of Gilead came in great numbers at the call of their chieftains, so that, although without money to pay any troops, David soon found himself at the head of a considerable army. A pitched battle was now inevitable. But so much depending on the life of the king, he was not allowed to take the field in person; and he therefore divided his forces into three detachments under Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, the commander of the foreign guards.

3 But the people [05971] answered [0559], Thou shalt not go forth [03318]: for if we flee [05127] away [05127], they will not care [07760] [03820] for us; neither if half [02677] of us die [04191], will they care [07760] [03820] for us: but now thou art worth [03644] ten [06235] thousand [0505] of us: therefore now it is better [02896] that thou succour [05826] [05826] us out of the city [05892].

21 And Ittai [0863] answered [06030] the king [04428], and said [0559], As the LORD [03068] liveth [02416], and as my lord [0113] the king [04428] liveth [02416], surely in what place [04725] my lord [0113] the king [04428] shall be, whether in death [04194] or life [02416], even there also will thy servant [05650] be.
22 And David [01732] said [0559] to Ittai [0863], Go [03212] and pass over [05674]. And Ittai [0863] the Gittite [01663] passed over [05674], and all his men [0582], and all the little ones [02945] that were with him.
