A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?--A better rendering is, "Shalt thou not have the excellency"? which is the true sense of the words referring to the high privileges and authority belonging to the first-born in patriarchal times.

sin lieth at the door--sin, that is, a sin offering--a common meaning of the word in Scripture (as in Hos 4:8; Co2 5:21; Heb 9:28). The purport of the divine rebuke to Cain was this, "Why art thou angry, as if unjustly treated? If thou doest well (that is, wert innocent and sinless) a thank offering would have been accepted as a token of thy dependence as a creature. But as thou doest not well (that is, art a sinner), a sin offering is necessary, by bringing which thou wouldest have met with acceptance and retained the honors of thy birthright." This language implies that previous instructions had been given as to the mode of worship; Abel offered through faith (Heb 11:4).

unto thee shall be his desire--The high distinction conferred by priority of birth is described (Gen 27:29); and it was Cain's conviction, that this honor had been withdrawn from him, by the rejection of his sacrifice, and conferred on his younger brother--hence the secret flame of jealousy, which kindled into a settled hatred and fell revenge.

29 Let people [05971] serve [05647] thee, and nations [03816] bow down [07812] to thee: be [01933] lord [01376] over thy brethren [0251], and let thy mother's [0517] sons [01121] bow down [07812] to thee: cursed [0779] be every one that curseth [0779] thee, and blessed [01288] be he that blesseth [01288] thee.
4 By faith [4102] Abel [6] offered [4374] unto God [2316] a more excellent [4119] sacrifice [2378] than [3844] Cain [2535], by [1223] which [3739] he obtained witness [3140] that he was [1511] righteous [1342], God [2316] testifying [3140] of [1909] his [846] gifts [1435]: and [2532] by [1223] it [846] he being dead [599] yet [2089] speaketh [2980] [2980].
28 So [3779] Christ [5547] was once [530] offered [4374] to [1519] bear [399] the sins [266] of many [4183]; and unto them that look [553] for him [846] shall he appear [3700] [1537] the second time [1208] without [5565] sin [266] unto [1519] salvation [4991].
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
8 They eat up [0398] the sin [02403] of my people [05971], and they set [05375] their heart [05315] on their iniquity [05771].
7 If [0518] thou doest well [03190], shalt thou not be accepted [07613]? and if thou doest not well [03190], sin [02403] lieth [07257] at the door [06607]. And unto thee shall be his desire [08669], and thou shalt rule [04910] over him.
21 Unto Adam [0120] also and to his wife [0802] did the LORD [03068] God [0430] make [06213] coats [03801] of skins [05785], and clothed them [03847].
20 Moreover [1161] the law [3551] entered [3922], that [2443] the offence [3900] might abound [4121]. But [1161] where [3757] sin [266] abounded [4121], grace [5485] did much more abound [5248]:
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
14 And [2532] as [2531] Moses [3475] lifted up [5312] the serpent [3789] in [1722] the wilderness [2048], even so [3779] must [1163] the Son [5207] of man [444] be lifted up [5312]:
3 Reuben [07205], thou art my firstborn [01060], my might [03581], and the beginning [07225] of my strength [0202], the excellency [03499] of dignity [07613], and the excellency [03499] of power [05794]:
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
