The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917]
buryingplace

Compare (Gen 33:19); (Gen 50:13); (Jos 24:32); (Act 7:15); (Act 7:16).

A discrepancy in these statements has been fancied. It disappears entirely before the natural supposition that in the interval of about eighty years between the purchase by Abraham of the family sepulchre (Gen 23:4-20) and Jacob's purchase (Gen 33:19); the descendants of Hamor (or "Emmor," (Act 7:15); (Act 7:16) had resumed possession of the field in which the burial cave was situated. Instead of asserting an ancient title by inheritance, Jacob repurchased the field. Heth was the common ancestor.

16 And [2532] were carried over [3346] into [1519] Sychem [4966], and [2532] laid [5087] in [1722] the sepulchre [3418] that [3739] Abraham [11] bought [5608] for a sum [5092] of money [694] of [3844] the sons [5207] of Emmor [1697] the father [3588] of Sychem [4966].
15 So [1161] Jacob [2384] went down [2597] into [1519] Egypt [125], and [2532] died [5053], he [846], and [2532] our [2257] fathers [3962],
19 And he bought [07069] a parcel [02513] of a field [07704], where he had spread [05186] his tent [0168], at the hand [03027] of the children [01121] of Hamor [02544], Shechem's [07927] father [01], for an hundred [03967] pieces of money [07192].
4 I am a stranger [01616] and a sojourner [08453] with you: give [05414] me a possession [0272] of a buryingplace [06913] with you, that I may bury [06912] my dead [04191] out of my sight [06440].
5 And the children [01121] of Heth [02845] answered [06030] Abraham [085], saying [0559] unto him,
6 Hear us [08085], my lord [0113]: thou art a mighty [0430] prince [05387] among us [08432]: in the choice [04005] of our sepulchres [06913] bury [06912] thy dead [04191]; none [03808] [0376] of us shall withhold [03607] from thee his sepulchre [06913], but that thou mayest bury [06912] thy dead [04191].
7 And Abraham [085] stood up [06965], and bowed [07812] himself to the people [05971] of the land [0776], even to the children [01121] of Heth [02845].
8 And he communed [01696] with them, saying [0559], If it be [03426] your mind [05315] that I should bury [06912] my dead [04191] out of my sight [06440]; hear [08085] me, and intreat [06293] for me to Ephron [06085] the son [01121] of Zohar [06714],
9 That he may give [05414] me the cave [04631] of Machpelah [04375], which he hath, which is in the end [07097] of his field [07704]; for as much [04392] money [03701] as it is worth [04392] he shall give it [05414] me for a possession [0272] of a buryingplace [06913] amongst you [08432].
10 And Ephron [06085] dwelt [03427] among [08432] the children [01121] of Heth [02845]: and Ephron [06085] the Hittite [02850] answered [06030] Abraham [085] in the audience [0241] of the children [01121] of Heth [02845], even of all that went in [0935] at the gate [08179] of his city [05892], saying [0559],
11 Nay [03808], my lord [0113], hear me [08085]: the field [07704] give I [05414] thee, and the cave [04631] that is therein, I give it [05414] thee; in the presence [05869] of the sons [01121] of my people [05971] give [05414] I it thee: bury [06912] thy dead [04191].
12 And Abraham [085] bowed down [07812] himself before [06440] the people [05971] of the land [0776].
13 And he spake [01696] unto Ephron [06085] in the audience [0241] of the people [05971] of the land [0776], saying [0559], But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee [03863], hear [08085] me: I will give [05414] thee money [03701] for the field [07704]; take [03947] it of me, and I will bury [06912] my dead [04191] there.
14 And Ephron [06085] answered [06030] Abraham [085], saying [0559] unto him,
15 My lord [0113], hearken [08085] unto me: the land [0776] is worth four [0702] hundred [03967] shekels [08255] of silver [03701]; what is that betwixt [0996] me and thee? bury [06912] therefore thy dead [04191].
16 And Abraham [085] hearkened [08085] unto Ephron [06085]; and Abraham [085] weighed [08254] to Ephron [06085] the silver [03701], which he had named [01696] in the audience [0241] of the sons [01121] of Heth [02845], four [0702] hundred [03967] shekels [08255] of silver [03701], current [05674] money with the merchant [05503].
17 And the field [07704] of Ephron [06085], which was in Machpelah [04375], which was before [06440] Mamre [04471], the field [07704], and the cave [04631] which was therein, and all the trees [06086] that were in the field [07704], that were in all the borders [01366] round about [05439], were made sure [06965]
18 Unto Abraham [085] for a possession [04736] in the presence [05869] of the children [01121] of Heth [02845], before all that went in [0935] at the gate [08179] of his city [05892].
19 And after [0310] this [03651], Abraham [085] buried [06912] Sarah [08283] his wife [0802] in the cave [04631] of the field [07704] of Machpelah [04375] before [06440] Mamre [04471]: the same is Hebron [02275] in the land [0776] of Canaan [03667].
20 And the field [07704], and the cave [04631] that is therein, were made sure [06965] unto Abraham [085] for a possession [0272] of a buryingplace [06913] by the sons [01121] of Heth [02845].
15 So [1161] Jacob [2384] went down [2597] into [1519] Egypt [125], and [2532] died [5053], he [846], and [2532] our [2257] fathers [3962],
32 And the bones [06106] of Joseph [03130], which the children [01121] of Israel [03478] brought up [05927] out of Egypt [04714], buried [06912] they in Shechem [07927], in a parcel [02513] of ground [07704] which Jacob [03290] bought [07069] of the sons [01121] of Hamor [02544] the father [01] of Shechem [07927] for an hundred [03967] pieces of silver [07192]: and it became the inheritance [05159] of the children [01121] of Joseph [03130].
13 For his sons [01121] carried [05375] him into the land [0776] of Canaan [03667], and buried [06912] him in the cave [04631] of the field [07704] of Machpelah [04375], which Abraham [085] bought [07069] with the field [07704] for a possession [0272] of a buryingplace [06913] of Ephron [06085] the Hittite [02850], before [06440] Mamre [04471].
19 And he bought [07069] a parcel [02513] of a field [07704], where he had spread [05186] his tent [0168], at the hand [03027] of the children [01121] of Hamor [02544], Shechem's [07927] father [01], for an hundred [03967] pieces of money [07192].
11 Dearly beloved [27], I beseech [3870] you as [5613] strangers [3941] and [2532] pilgrims [3927], abstain from [567] fleshly [4559] lusts [1939], which [3748] war [4754] against [2596] the soul [5590];
13 These [3778] all [3956] died [599] in [2596] faith [4102], not [3361] having received [2983] the promises [1860], but [235] having seen [1492] them [846] afar off [4207], and [2532] were persuaded of [3982] them, and [2532] embraced [782] them, and [2532] confessed [3670] that [3754] they were [1526] strangers [3581] and [2532] pilgrims [3927] on [1909] the earth [1093].
14 For [1063] they that say [3004] such things [5108] declare plainly [1718] that [3754] they seek [1934] a country [3968].
15 And [2532] truly [3303], if [1487] they had been mindful [3421] of that [1565] country from [575] whence [3739] they came out [1831], they might [302] have had [2192] opportunity [2540] to have returned [344].
16 But [1161] now [3570] they desire [3713] a better [2909] country, that is [5123], an heavenly [2032]: wherefore [1352] God [2316] is [1870] not [3756] ashamed [1870] [846] to be called [1941] their [846] God [2316]: for [1063] he hath prepared [2090] for them [846] a city [4172].
