white and ruddy--health and beauty. So David (equivalent to beloved), His forefather after the flesh, and type (Sa1 17:42). "The Lamb" is at once His nuptial and sacrificial name (Pe1 1:19; Rev 19:7), characterized by white and red; white, His spotless manhood (Rev 1:14). The Hebrew for white is properly "illuminated by the sun," white as the light" (compare Mat 17:2); red, in His blood-dyed garment as slain (Isa 63:1-3; Rev 5:6; Rev 19:13). Angels are white, not red; the blood of martyrs does not enter heaven; His alone is seen there.

chiefest--literally, "a standard bearer"; that is, as conspicuous above all others, as a standard bearer is among hosts (Psa 45:7; Psa 89:6; Isa 11:10; Isa 55:4; Heb 2:10; compare Sa2 18:3; Job 33:23; Phi 2:9-11; Rev 1:5). The chief of sinners needs the "chiefest" of Saviours.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
