Translate, "Unto the dispensation of the fulness of the times," that is, "which He purposed in Himself" (Eph 1:9) with a view to the economy of (the gracious administration belonging to) the fulness of the times (Greek, "fit times," "seasons"). More comprehensive than "the fulness of the time" (Gal 4:4). The whole of the Gospel times (plural) is meant, with the benefits to the Church dispensed in them severally and successively. Compare "the ages to come" (Eph 2:7). "The ends of the ages" (Greek, Co1 10:11); "the times (same Greek as here, 'the seasons,' or 'fitly appointed times') of the Gentiles" (Luk 21:24); "the seasons which the Father hath put in His own power" (Act 1:7); "the times of restitution of all things which God hath spoken by the prophets since the world began" (Act 3:20-21). The coming of Jesus at the first advent, "in the fulness of time," was one of these "times." The descent of the Holy Ghost, "when Pentecost was fully come" (Act 2:1), was another. The testimony given by the apostles to Him "in due time" ("in its own seasons," Greek) (Ti1 2:6) was another. The conversion of the Jews "when the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled," the second coming of Christ, the "restitution of all things," the millennial kingdom, the new heaven and earth, shall be severally instances of "the dispensation of the fulness of the times," that is, "the dispensation of" the Gospel events and benefits belonging to their respective "times," when severally filled up or completed. God the Father, according to His own good pleasure and purpose, is the Dispenser both of the Gospel benefits and of their several fitting times (Act 1:7).
gather together in one--Greek, "sum up under one head"; "recapitulate." The "good pleasure which He purposed," was "to sum up all things (Greek, 'THE whole range of things') in Christ (Greek, 'the Christ,' that is, His Christ)" [ALFORD]. God's purpose is to sum up the whole creation in Christ, the Head of angels, with whom He is linked by His invisible nature, and of men with whom He is linked by His humanity; of Jews and Gentiles; of the living and the dead (Eph 3:15); of animate and inanimate creation. Sin has disarranged the creature's relation of subordination to God. God means to gather up all together in Christ; or as Col 1:20 says, "By Him to reconcile all things unto Himself, whether things in earth or things in heaven." ALFORD well says, "The Church of which the apostle here mainly treats, is subordinated to Him in the highest degree of conscious and joyful union; those who are not His spiritually, in mere subjugation, yet consciously; the inferior tribes of creation unconsciously; but objectively, all are summed up in Him." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
That in the dispensation - The word rendered here as "dispensation," οἰκονομία oikonomia, means properly "the management of household affairs." Then it means stewardship or administration; a dispensation or arrangement of things: a scheme or plan. The meaning here is, that this plan was formed in order (εἰς eis) or "unto" this end, that in the full arrangement of times, or in the arrangements completing the filling up of the times, God might gather together in one all things. Tyndale renders it: "to have it declared when the time was full come," etc.
The fulness of times - When the times were fully completed; when all the periods should have passed by which he had prescribed, or judged necessary to the completion of the object. The period referred to here is that when all things shall be gathered together in the Redeemer at the winding up of human affairs, or the consummation of all things. The arrangement was made with reference to that, and embraced all things which conduced to that. The plan stretched from before "the foundation of the world" to the period when all times should be completed; and of course all the events occurring in that intermediate period were embraced in the plan.
He might gather together in one - The word used here - ἀνακεφαλαιόω anakephalaioō - means literally, to sum up, to recapitulate, as an orator does at the close of his discourse. It is from κεφαλή kephalē, the head; or κεφάλαιον kephalaion, the sum, the chief thing, the main point. In the New Testament, the word means to collect under one head, or to comprehend several things under one; Rom 13:9. "It is briefly comprehended," i. e., summed up under this one precept," sc., "love." In the passage before us, it means that God would sum up, or comprehend all things in heaven and earth through the Christian dispensation; he would make one empire, under one head, with common feelings, and under the same laws. The reference is to the unity which will hereafter exist in the kingdom of God, when all his friends on earth and in heaven shall be united, and all shall have a common head. Now there is alienation. The earth has been separated from other worlds by rebellion. It has gone off into apostasy and sin. It refuses to acknowledge the Great Head to which other worlds are subject, and the object is to restore it to its proper place, so that there shall be one great and united kingdom.
All things - τὰ παντά ta panta. It is remarkable that Paul has used here a word which is in the neuter gender. It is not all "persons," all angels, or all human beings, or all the elect, but all "things." Bloomfield and others suppose that "persons" are meant, and that the phrase is used for τοὺς πάντας tous pantas. But it seems to me that Paul did not use this word without design. All "things" are placed under Christ, Eph 1:22; Mat 28:18, and the design of God is to restore harmony in the universe. Sin has produced disorder not not only in "mind," but in "matter." The world is disarranged. The effects of transgression are seen everywhere; and the object of the plan of redemption is to put things on their pristine footing, and restore them as they were at first. Everything is, therefore, put under the Lord Jesus, and all things are to be brought under his control, so as to constitute one vast harmonious empire. The amount of the declaration here is, that there is hereafter to be one kingdom, in which there shall be no jar or alienation; that the now separated kingdoms of heaven and earth shall be united under one head, and that henceforward all shall be harmony and love. The things which are to be united in Christ, are those which are "in heaven and which are on earth." Nothing is said of "hell." Of course this passage cannot teach the doctrine of universal salvation, since there is one world which is not to have a part in this ultimate union.
In Christ - By means of Christ, or under him, as the great head and king. He is to be the great agent in effecting this, and he is to preside over this united kingdom. In accordance with this view the heavenly inhabitants, the angels as well as the redeemed, are uniformly represented as uniting in the same worship, and as acknowledging the Redeemer as their common head and king; Rev 5:9-12.
Both which are in heaven - Margin, as in Greek, "in the heavens." Many different opinions have been formed of the meaning of this expression. Some suppose it to mean the saints in heaven, who died before the coming of the Saviour; and some that it refers to the Jews, designated as "the heavenly people," in contradistinction from the Gentiles, as having nothing divine and heavenly in them, and as being of the "earth." The more simple and obvious interpretation is, however, without doubt, the correct one, and this is to suppose that it refers to the holy inhabitants of other worlds. The object of the plan of salvation is to produce a harmony between them and the redeemed on earth, or to produce out of all, one great and united kingdom. In doing this, it is not necessary to suppose that any change is to be produced in the inhabitants of heaven. All the change is to occur among those on earth, and the object is to make out of all, one harmonious and glorious empire.
And which are on earth - The redeemed on earth. The object is to bring them into harmony with the inhabitants of heaven. This is the great object proposed by the plan of salvation. It is to found one glorious and eternal kingdom, that shall comprehend all holy beings on earth and all in heaven. There is now discord and disunion. Man is separated from God, and from all holy beings. Between him and every holy being there is by nature discord and alienation. Unrenewed man has no sympathy with the feelings and work of the angels; no love for their employment; no desire to be associated with them. Nothing can be more unlike than the customs, feelings, laws, and habits which prevail on earth, from those which prevail in heaven. But the object of the plan of salvation is to restore harmony to those alienated communities, and produce eternal concord and love. Hence, learn:
(1) The greatness and glory of the plan of salvation. It is no trifling undertaking to "reconcile worlds," and of such discordant materials to found one great and glorious and eternal empire.
(2) the reason of the interest which angels feel in the plan of redemption; Pe1 1:12. They are deeply concerned in the redemption of those who, with them, are to constitute that great kingdom which is to be eternal. Without envy at the happiness of others; without any feeling that the accession of others will diminish "their" felicity or glory, they wait to hail the coming of others, and rejoice to receive even one who comes to be united to their number.
(3) this plan was worthy of the efforts of the Son of God. To restore harmony in heaven and earth; to prevent the evils of alienation and discord; to rear one immense and glorious kingdom, was an object worthy the incarnation of the Son of God.
(4) the glory of the Redeemer. He is to be exalted as the Head of this united and ever-glorious kingdom, and all the redeemed on earth and the angelic hosts shall acknowledge him as their common Sovereign and Head.
(5) this is the greatest and most important enterprise on earth. It should engage every heart, and enlist the powers of every soul. It should be the earnest desire of all to swell the numbers of those who shall constitute this united and ever-glorious kingdom, and to bring as many as possible of the human race into union with the holy inhabitants of he other world. |

dispensation of the fullness of times
The Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. This, the seventh and last of the ordered ages which condition human life on the earth, is identical with the kingdom covenanted to David. (Sa2 7:8-17); (Zac 12:8).
Summary;

(2) The time of testimony and divine forbearance ends in judgment. (Mat 25:31-46); (Act 17:30-31); (Rev 20:7-15).
(3) The time of toil ends in rest and reward. (Th2 1:6-7).
(4) The time of suffering ends in glory. (Rom 8:17-18).
(5) The time of Israel's blindness and chastisement ends in restoration and conversion. (Rom 11:25-27); (Eze 39:25-29).
(6) The times of the Gentiles end in the smiting of the image and the setting up of the kingdom of the heavens. (Dan 2:34); (Dan 2:35); (Rev 19:15-21).
(7) The time of creation's thraldom ends in deliverance at the manifestation of the sons of God. (Gen 3:17); (Isa 11:6-8); (Rom 8:19-21). |

That in the dispensation, etc. (εἰς οἰκονομίαν)
The A.V. is faulty and clumsy. Εἱς does not mean in, but unto, with a view to. Dispensation has no article. The clause is directly connected with the preceding: the mystery which He purposed in Himself unto a dispensation. For οἰκονομία dispensation see on Col 1:25. Here and Eph 3:2, of the divine regulation, disposition, economy of things.
Of the fullness of times (τοῦ πληρώματος τῶν καιρῶν)
For fullness, see on Rom 11:12; see on Joh 1:16; see on Col 1:19. For times, compare Gal 4:4, "fullness of the time (τοῦ χρόνου), where the time before Christ is conceived as a unit. Here the conception is of a series of epochs. The fullness of the times is the moment when the successive ages of the gospel dispensation are completed. The meaning of the whole phrase, then, is: a dispensation characterized: by the fullness of the times: set forth when the times are full.
To sum up all things in Christ (ἀνακεφαλαιώσασθαι)
Explanatory of the preceding phrase; showing in what the dispensation consists. For the word, see on Rom 13:9. It means to bring back to and gather round the main point (κεφαλαίον), not the head (κεφαλή); so that, in itself, it does not indicate Christ (the Read) as the central point of regathering, though He is so in fact. That is expressed by the following in Christ. The compounded preposition ἀνά signifies again, pointing back to a previous condition where no separation existed. All things. All created beings and things; not limited to intelligent beings. Compare Rom 8:21; Co1 15:28.
The connection of the whole is as follows: God made known the mystery of His will, the plan of redemption, according to His own good pleasure, in order to bring to pass an economy peculiar to that point of time when the ages of the christian dispensation should be fulfilled - an economy which should be characterized by the regathering of all things round one point, Christ.
God contemplates a regathering, a restoration to that former condition when all things were in perfect unity, and normally combined to serve God's ends. This unity was broken by the introduction of sin. Man's fall involved the unintelligent creation (Rom 8:20). The mystery of God's will includes the restoration of this unity in and through Christ; one kingdom on earth and in heaven - a new heaven and a new earth in which shall dwell righteousness, and "the creation shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God." |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
That in the dispensation of the fullness of the times - In this last administration of God's fullest grace, which took place when the time appointed was fully come. He might gather together into one in Christ - Might recapitulate, re - unite, and place in order again under Christ, their common Head. All things which are in heaven, and on earth - All angels and men, whether living or dead, in the Lord. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
In the dispensation of the fullness of times - Εις οικονομιαν του πληρωματος των καιρων. The word οικονομια, which is the same as our word economy, signifies, as Dr. Macknight has well observed, "the plan which the master of a family, or his steward, has established for the management of the family;" it signifies, also, a plan for the management of any sort of business: and here it means the dispensation of the Gospel, that plan by which God has provided salvation for a lost world; and according to which he intends to gather all believers, both Jews and Gentiles, into one Church under Jesus Christ, their head and governor. See the note on Mat 24:45, where the word and the office are particularly explained.
The fullness of times - By this phrase we are to understand either the Gospel dispensation, which is the consummation of all preceding dispensations, and the last that shall be afforded to man; or that advanced state of the world which God saw to be the most proper for the full manifestation of those benevolent purposes which he had formed in himself relative to the salvation of the world by Jesus Christ.
That he might gather together in one - Ανακεφαλαιωσασθαι, from ανα, again, and κεφαλαιοω, to reduce to one sum; to add up; to bring different sums together, and fractions of sums, so as to reduce them under one denomination; to recapitulate the principal matters contained in a discourse. Here it means the gathering together both Jews and Gentiles, who have believed in Christ, into one Church and flock. See the preceding note.
All things - which are in heaven, and which are on earth - This clause is variously understood: some think, by things in heaven the Jewish state is meant and by things on earth the Christian. The Jews had been long considered a Divine or heavenly people; their doctrine, their government, their constitution, both civil and ecclesiastical, were all Divine or heavenly: as the powers of the heavens, Mat 24:29, Luk 21:26, mean the Jewish rulers in Church and state, it is very possible that the things which are in heaven mean this same state; and as the Gentiles were considered to have nothing Divine or heavenly among them, they may be here intended by the earth, out of the corruption of which they are to be gathered by the preaching of the Gospel. But there are others who imagine that the things in heaven mean the angelical hosts; and the things on earth believers of all nations, who shall all be joined together at last in one assembly to worship God throughout eternity. And some think that the things in heaven mean the saints who died before Christ's advent, and who are not to be made perfect till the resurrection, when the full power and efficacy of Christ shall be seen in raising the bodies of believers and uniting them with their holy souls, to reign in his presence for ever. And some think that, as the Hebrew phrase שמים והארץ shamayim vehaarets, the heavens and the earth, signifies all creatures, the words in the text are to be understood as signifying all mankind, without discrimination of peoples, kindreds, or tongues; Jews, Greeks, or barbarians. All that are saved of all nations, (being saved in the same way, viz. by faith in Christ Jesus, without any distinction of nation or previous condition), and all gathered into one Church or assembly.
I believe that the forming one Church out of both Jews and Gentiles is that to which the apostle refers. This agrees with what is said, Eph 2:14-17. |
20 And [2532], having made peace [1517] through [1223] the blood [129] of his [846] cross [4716], by [1223] him [846] to reconcile [604] all things [3956] unto [1519] himself [846]; by [1223] him [846], I say, whether [1535] they be things in [1909] earth [1093], or [1535] things in [1722] heaven [3772].
15 Of [1537] whom [3739] the whole [3956] family [3965] in [1722] heaven [3772] and [2532] earth [1909] [1093] is named [3687],
7 And [1161] he said [2036] unto [4314] them [846], It is [2076] not [3756] for you [5216] to know [1097] the times [5550] or [2228] the seasons [2540], which [3739] the Father [3962] hath put [5087] in [1722] his own [2398] power [1849].
6 Who [3588] gave [1325] himself [1438] a ransom [487] for [5228] all [3956], to be testified [3142] in due [2398] time [2540].
1 And [2532] when [1722] the day [2250] of Pentecost [4005] was fully come [4845], they were [2258] all [537] with one accord [3661] in [1909] one place [846].
20 And [2532] he shall send [649] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], which before was preached [4296] unto you [5213]:
21 Whom [3739] the heaven [3772] [3303] must [1163] receive [1209] until [891] the times [5550] of restitution [605] of all things [3956], which [3739] God [2316] hath spoken [2980] by [1223] the mouth [4750] of all [3956] his [846] holy [40] prophets [4396] since [575] the world began [165].
24 And [2532] they shall fall [4098] by the edge [4750] of the sword [3162], and [2532] shall be led away captive [163] into [1519] all [3956] nations [1484]: and [2532] Jerusalem [2419] shall be [2071] trodden down [3961] of [5259] the Gentiles [1484], until [891] the times [2540] of the Gentiles [1484] be fulfilled [4137].
11 Now [1161] all [3956] these things [5023] happened [4819] unto them [1565] for ensamples [5179]: and [1161] they are written [1125] for [4314] our [2257] admonition [3559], upon [1519] whom [3739] the ends [5056] of the world [165] are come [2658].
7 That [2443] in [1722] the ages [165] to come [1904] he might shew [1731] the exceeding [5235] riches [4149] of his [846] grace [5485] in [1722] his kindness [5544] toward [1909] us [2248] through [1722] Christ [5547] Jesus [2424].
4 But [1161] when [3753] the fulness [4138] of the time [5550] was come [2064], God [2316] sent forth [1821] his [846] Son [5207], made [1096] of [1537] a woman [1135], made [1096] under [5259] the law [3551],
9 Having made known [1107] unto us [2254] the mystery [3466] of his [846] will [2307], according to [2596] his [846] good pleasure [2107] which [3739] he hath purposed [4388] in [1722] himself [846]:
12 Unto whom [3739] it was revealed [601], that [3754] not [3756] unto themselves [1438], but [1161] unto us [2254] they did minister [1247] the things [846], which [3739] are [312] now [3568] reported [312] unto you [5213] by [1223] them that have preached the gospel [2097] unto you [5209] with [1722] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] sent down [649] from [575] heaven [3772]; which things [3739] the angels [32] desire [1937] to look [3879] into [1519].
9 And [2532] they sung [103] a new [2537] song [5603], saying [3004], Thou art [1488] worthy [514] to take [2983] the book [975], and [2532] to open [455] the seals [4973] thereof [846]: for [3754] thou wast slain [4969], and [2532] hast redeemed [59] us [2248] to God [2316] by [1722] thy [4675] blood [129] out of [1537] every [3956] kindred [5443], and [2532] tongue [1100], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] nation [1484];
10 And [2532] hast made [4160] us [2248] unto our [2257] God [2316] kings [935] and [2532] priests [2409]: and [2532] we shall reign [936] on [1909] the earth [1093].
11 And [2532] I beheld [1492], and [2532] I heard [191] the voice [5456] of many [4183] angels [32] round about [2943] the throne [2362] and [2532] the beasts [2226] and [2532] the elders [4245]: and [2532] the number [706] of them [846] was [2258] ten thousand [3461] times ten thousand [3461], and [2532] thousands [5505] of thousands [5505];
12 Saying [3004] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], Worthy [514] is [2076] the Lamb [721] that was slain [4969] to receive [2983] power [1411], and [2532] riches [4149], and [2532] wisdom [4678], and [2532] strength [2479], and [2532] honour [5092], and [2532] glory [1391], and [2532] blessing [2129].
18 And [2532] Jesus [2424] came [4334] and spake [2980] unto them [846], saying [3004], All [3956] power [1849] is given [1325] unto me [3427] in [1722] heaven [3772] and [2532] in [1909] earth [1093].
22 And [2532] hath put [5293] all [3956] things under [5259] his [846] feet [4228], and [2532] gave [1325] him [846] to be the head [2776] over [5228] all [3956] things to the church [1577],
9 For [1063] this, Thou shalt [3431] not [3756] commit adultery [3431], Thou shalt [5407] not [3756] kill [5407], Thou shalt [2813] not [3756] steal [2813], Thou shalt [5576] not [3756] bear false witness [5576], Thou shalt [1937] not [3756] covet [1937]; and [2532] if there be any [1536] other [2087] commandment [1785], it is briefly comprehended [346] in [1722] this [5129] saying [3056], namely [1722], Thou shalt love [25] thy [4675] neighbour [4139] as [5613] thyself [1438].
19 For [1063] the earnest expectation [603] of the creature [2937] waiteth [553] for the manifestation [602] of the sons [5207] of God [2316].
20 For [1063] the creature [2937] was made subject [5293] to vanity [3153], not [3756] willingly [1635], but [235] by reason [1223] of him who hath subjected [5293] the same in [1909] hope [1680],
21 Because [3754] the creature [2937] itself [846] also [2532] shall be delivered [1659] from [575] the bondage [1397] of corruption [5356] into [1519] the glorious [1391] liberty [1657] of the children [5043] of God [2316].
6 The wolf [02061] also shall dwell [01481] with the lamb [03532], and the leopard [05246] shall lie down [07257] with the kid [01423]; and the calf [05695] and the young lion [03715] and the fatling [04806] together [03162]; and a little [06996] child [05288] shall lead [05090] them.
7 And the cow [06510] and the bear [01677] shall feed [07462]; their young ones [03206] shall lie down [07257] together [03162]: and the lion [0738] shall eat [0398] straw [08401] like the ox [01241].
8 And the sucking child [03243] shall play [08173] on the hole [02352] of the asp [06620], and the weaned child [01580] shall put [01911] his hand [03027] on the cockatrice [06848]' den [03975].
17 And unto Adam [0121] he said [0559], Because thou hast hearkened [08085] unto the voice [06963] of thy wife [0802], and hast eaten [0398] of the tree [06086], of which [0834] I commanded thee [06680], saying [0559], Thou shalt not eat [0398] of it: cursed [0779] is the ground [0127] for thy sake; in sorrow [06093] shalt thou eat [0398] of it all [03605] the days [03117] of thy life [02416];
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
35 Then [0116] was the iron [06523], the clay [02635], the brass [05174], the silver [03702], and the gold [01722], broken to pieces [01855] [01751] together [02298], and became [01934] like the chaff [05784] of [04481] the summer [07007] threshingfloors [0147]; and the wind [07308] carried [05376] them [01994] away [05376], that [03606] no [03809] place [0870] was found [07912] for them: and the stone [069] that smote [04223] the image [06755] became [01934] a great [07229] mountain [02906], and filled [04391] the whole [03606] earth [0772].
34 Thou sawest [02370] [01934] till [05705] that a stone [069] was cut out [01505] without [03809] hands [03028], which smote [04223] the image [06755] upon [05922] his feet [07271] that were of iron [06523] and clay [02635], and brake [01855] them [01994] to pieces [01855].
25 Therefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Now will I bring again [07725] the captivity [07622] [07622] of Jacob [03290], and have mercy [07355] upon the whole house [01004] of Israel [03478], and will be jealous [07065] for my holy [06944] name [08034];
26 After that they have borne [05375] their shame [03639], and all their trespasses [04604] whereby they have trespassed [04603] against me, when they dwelt [03427] safely [0983] in their land [0127], and none made them afraid [02729].
27 When I have brought them again [07725] from the people [05971], and gathered [06908] them out of their enemies [0341] ' lands [0776], and am sanctified [06942] in them in the sight [05869] of many [07227] nations [01471];
28 Then shall they know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068] their God [0430], which caused them to be led into captivity [01540] among the heathen [01471]: but I have gathered [03664] them unto their own land [0127], and have left [03498] none of them any more there.
29 Neither will I hide [05641] my face [06440] any more from them: for I have poured out [08210] my spirit [07307] upon the house [01004] of Israel [03478], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
25 For [1063] I would [2309] not [3756], brethren [80], that ye [5209] should be ignorant [50] of this [5124] mystery [3466], lest [3363] ye should be [5600] wise [5429] in [3844] your own conceits [1438]; that [3754] blindness [4457] in [575] part [3313] is happened [1096] to Israel [2474], until [891] [3739] the fulness [4138] of the Gentiles [1484] be come in [1525].
26 And [2532] so [3779] all [3956] Israel [2474] shall be saved [4982]: as [2531] it is written [1125], There shall come [2240] out of [1537] Sion [4622] the Deliverer [4506], and [2532] shall turn away [654] ungodliness [763] from [575] Jacob [2384]:
27 For [2532] this [3778] is my [3844] [1700] covenant [1242] unto them [846], when [3752] I shall take away [851] their [846] sins [266].
17 And [1161] if [1487] children [5043], then [2532] heirs [2818]; heirs [2818] of God [3303] [2316], and [1161] joint-heirs [4789] with Christ [5547]; if so be [1512] that we suffer with [4841] him, that [2443] we may be [4888] also [2532] glorified together [4888].
18 For [1063] I reckon [3049] that [3754] the sufferings [3804] of this present [3568] time [2540] are not [3756] worthy [514] to be compared with [4314] the glory [1391] which shall [3195] be revealed [601] in [1519] us [2248].
6 Seeing [1512] it is a righteous thing [1342] with [3844] God [2316] to recompense [467] tribulation [2347] to them that trouble [2346] you [5209];
7 And [2532] to you [5213] who are troubled [2346] rest [425] with [3326] us [2257], when [1722] the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] shall be revealed [602] from [575] heaven [3772] with [3326] his [846] mighty [1411] angels [32],
7 And [2532] when [3752] the thousand [5507] years [2094] are expired [5055], Satan [4567] shall be loosed [3089] out of [1537] his [846] prison [5438],
8 And [2532] shall go out [1831] to deceive [4105] the nations [1484] which [3588] are in [1722] the four [5064] quarters [1137] of the earth [1093], Gog [1136] and [2532] Magog [3098], to gather [4863] them [846] together [4863] to [1519] battle [4171]: the number [706] of whom [3739] is as [5613] the sand [285] of the sea [2281].
9 And [2532] they went up [305] on [1909] the breadth [4114] of the earth [1093], and [2532] compassed [2944] the camp [3925] of the saints [40] about [2944], and [2532] the beloved [25] city [4172]: and [2532] fire [4442] came down [2597] from [575] God [2316] out of [1537] heaven [3772], and [2532] devoured [2719] them [846].
10 And [2532] the devil [1228] that deceived [4105] them [846] was cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442] and [2532] brimstone [2303], where [3699] the beast [2342] and [2532] the false prophet [5578] are, and [2532] shall be tormented [928] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] a great [3173] white [3022] throne [2362], and [2532] him that sat [2521] on [1909] it [846], from [575] whose [3739] face [4383] the earth [1093] and [2532] the heaven [3772] fled away [5343]; and [2532] there was found [2147] no [3756] place [5117] for them [846].
12 And [2532] I saw [1492] the dead [3498], small [3398] and [2532] great [3173], stand [2476] before [1799] God [2316]; and [2532] the books [975] were opened [455]: and [2532] another [243] book [975] was opened [455], which [3739] is [2076] the book of life [2222]: and [2532] the dead [3498] were judged [2919] out of [1537] those things which were written [1125] in [1722] the books [975], according to [2596] their [846] works [2041].
13 And [2532] the sea [2281] gave up [1325] the dead [3498] which [3588] were in [1722] it [846]; and [2532] death [2288] and [2532] hell [86] delivered up [1325] the dead [3498] which [3588] were in [1722] them [846]: and [2532] they were judged [2919] every man [1538] according to [2596] their [846] works [2041].
14 And [2532] death [2288] and [2532] hell [86] were cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442]. This [3778] is [2076] the second [1208] death [2288].
15 And [2532] whosoever [1536] was [2147] not [3756] found [2147] written [1125] in [1722] the book [976] of life [2222] was cast [906] into [1519] the lake [3041] of fire [4442].
30 And [3303] [3767] the times [5550] of this ignorance [52] God [2316] winked at [5237]; but now [3569] commandeth [3853] all [3956] men [444] every where [3837] to repent [3340]:
31 Because [1360] he hath appointed [2476] a day [2250], in [1722] the which [3739] he will [3195] judge [2919] the world [3625] in [1722] righteousness [1343] by [1722] that man [435] whom [3739] he hath ordained [3724]; whereof he hath given [3930] assurance [4102] unto all [3956] men, in that he hath raised [450] him [846] from [1537] the dead [3498].
31 When [1161] [3752] the Son [5207] of man [444] shall come [2064] in [1722] his [846] glory [1391], and [2532] all [3956] the holy [40] angels [32] with [3326] him [846], then [5119] shall he sit [2523] upon [1909] the throne [2362] of his [846] glory [1391]:
32 And [2532] before [1715] him [846] shall be gathered [4863] all [3956] nations [1484]: and [2532] he shall separate [873] them [846] one [240] from [575] another [240], as [5618] a shepherd [4166] divideth [873] his sheep [4263] from [575] the goats [2056]:
33 And [2532] he shall set [2476] [3303] the sheep [4263] on [1537] his [846] right hand [1188], but [1161] the goats [2055] on [1537] the left [2176].
34 Then [5119] shall the King [935] say [2046] unto them on [1537] his [846] right hand [1188], Come [1205], ye blessed [2127] of my [3450] Father [3962], inherit [2816] the kingdom [932] prepared [2090] for you [5213] from [575] the foundation [2602] of the world [2889]:
35 For [1063] I was an hungred [3983], and [2532] ye gave [1325] me [3427] meat [5315]: I was thirsty [1372], and [2532] ye gave [4222] me [3165] drink [4222]: I was [2252] a stranger [3581], and [2532] ye took [4863] me [3165] in [4863]:
36 Naked [1131], and [2532] ye clothed [4016] me [3165]: I was sick [770], and [2532] ye visited [1980] me [3165]: I was [2252] in [1722] prison [5438], and [2532] ye came [2064] unto [4314] me [3165].
37 Then [5119] shall the righteous [1342] answer [611] him [846], saying [3004], Lord [2962], when [4219] saw we [1492] thee [4571] an hungred [3983], and [2532] fed [5142] thee? or [2228] thirsty [1372], and [2532] gave thee drink [4222]?
38 [1161] When [4219] saw we [1492] thee [4571] a stranger [3581], and [2532] took thee in [4863]? or [2228] naked [1131], and [2532] clothed [4016] thee?
39 [1161] Or when [4219] saw we [1492] thee [4571] sick [772], or [2228] in [1722] prison [5438], and [2532] came [2064] unto [4314] thee [4571]?
40 And [2532] the King [935] shall answer [611] and say [2046] unto them [846], Verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Inasmuch [1909] as [3745] ye have done [4160] it unto one [1520] of the least [1646] of these [5130] my [3450] brethren [80], ye have done [4160] it unto me [1698].
41 Then [5119] shall he say [2046] also [2532] unto them on [1537] the left hand [2176], Depart [4198] from [575] me [1700], ye cursed [2672], into [1519] everlasting [166] fire [4442], prepared [2090] for the devil [1228] and [2532] his [846] angels [32]:
42 For [1063] I was an hungred [3983], and [2532] ye gave [1325] me [3427] no [3756] meat [5315]: I was thirsty [1372], and [2532] ye gave [4222] me [3165] no [3756] drink [4222]:
43 I was [2252] a stranger [3581], and [2532] ye took [4863] me [3165] not [3756] in [4863]: naked [1131], and [2532] ye clothed [4016] me [3165] not [3756]: sick [772], and [2532] in [1722] prison [5438], and [2532] ye visited [1980] me [3165] not [3756].
44 Then [5119] shall they [846] also [2532] answer [611] him [846], saying [3004], Lord [2962], when [4219] saw we [1492] thee [4571] an hungred [3983], or [2228] athirst [1372], or [2228] a stranger [3581], or [2228] naked [1131], or [2228] sick [772], or [2228] in [1722] prison [5438], and [2532] did [1247] not [3756] minister [1247] unto thee [4671]?
45 Then [5119] shall he answer [611] them [846], saying [3004], Verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Inasmuch [1909] as [3745] ye did [4160] it not [3756] to one [1520] of the least [1646] of these [5130], ye did [4160] it not [3761] to me [1698].
46 And [2532] these [3778] shall go away [565] into [1519] everlasting [166] punishment [2851]: but [1161] the righteous [1342] into [1519] life [2222] eternal [166].
3 And shall make him of quick understanding [07306] in the fear [03374] of the LORD [03068]: and he shall not judge [08199] after the sight [04758] of his eyes [05869], neither reprove [03198] after the hearing [04926] of his ears [0241]:
4 But with righteousness [06664] shall he judge [08199] the poor [01800], and reprove [03198] with equity [04334] for the meek [06035] of the earth [0776]: and he shall smite [05221] the earth [0776] with the rod [07626] of his mouth [06310], and with the breath [07307] of his lips [08193] shall he slay [04191] the wicked [07563].
24 Then [1534] cometh the end [5056], when [3752] he shall have delivered up [3860] the kingdom [932] to God [2316], even [2532] the Father [3962]; when [3752] he shall have put down [2673] all [3956] rule [746] and [2532] all [3956] authority [1849] and [2532] power [1411].
31 And [2532], behold [2400], thou shalt conceive [4815] in [1722] thy womb [1064], and [2532] bring forth [5088] a son [5207], and [2532] shalt call [2564] his [846] name [3686] JESUS [2424].
32 He [3778] shall be [2071] great [3173], and [2532] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of the Highest [5310]: and [2532] the Lord [2962] God [2316] shall give [1325] unto him [846] the throne [2362] of his [846] father [3962] David [1138]:
33 And [2532] he shall reign [936] over [1909] the house [3624] of Jacob [2384] for [1519] ever [165]; and [2532] of his [846] kingdom [932] there shall be [2071] no [3756] end [5056].
8 In that day [03117] shall the LORD [03068] defend [01598] the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389]; and he that is feeble [03782] among them at that day [03117] shall be as David [01732]; and the house [01004] of David [01732] shall be as God [0430], as the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] before [06440] them.
8 Now therefore so shalt thou say [0559] unto my servant [05650] David [01732], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], I took [03947] thee from the sheepcote [05116], from following [0310] the sheep [06629], to be ruler [05057] over my people [05971], over Israel [03478]:
9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest [01980], and have cut off [03772] all thine enemies [0341] out of thy sight [06440], and have made [06213] thee a great [01419] name [08034], like unto the name [08034] of the great [01419] men that are in the earth [0776].
10 Moreover I will appoint [07760] a place [04725] for my people [05971] Israel [03478], and will plant [05193] them, that they may dwell [07931] in a place of their own, and move [07264] no more; neither shall the children [01121] of wickedness [05766] afflict [06031] them any more [03254], as beforetime [07223],
11 And as since the time [03117] that I commanded [06680] judges [08199] to be over my people [05971] Israel [03478], and have caused thee to rest [05117] from all thine enemies [0341]. Also the LORD [03068] telleth [05046] thee that he will make [06213] thee an house [01004].
12 And when thy days [03117] be fulfilled [04390], and thou shalt sleep [07901] with thy fathers [01], I will set up [06965] thy seed [02233] after [0310] thee, which shall proceed [03318] out of thy bowels [04578], and I will establish [03559] his kingdom [04467].
13 He shall build [01129] an house [01004] for my name [08034], and I will stablish [03559] the throne [03678] of his kingdom [04467] for [05704] ever [05769].
14 I will be his father [01], and he shall be my son [01121]. If he commit iniquity [05753], I will chasten [03198] him with the rod [07626] of men [0582], and with the stripes [05061] of the children [01121] of men [0120]:
15 But my mercy [02617] shall not depart away [05493] from him, as I took [05493] it from Saul [07586], whom I put away [05493] before [06440] thee.
16 And thine house [01004] and thy kingdom [04467] shall be established [0539] for [05704] ever [05769] before [06440] thee: thy throne [03678] shall be established [03559] for [05704] ever [05769].
17 According to all these words [01697], and according to all this vision [02384], so did Nathan [05416] speak [01696] unto David [01732].
20 For [1063] the creature [2937] was made subject [5293] to vanity [3153], not [3756] willingly [1635], but [235] by reason [1223] of him who hath subjected [5293] the same in [1909] hope [1680],
28 And [1161] when [3752] all things [3956] shall be subdued [5293] unto him [846], then [5119] shall [5293] the Son [5207] also [2532] himself [846] be subject [5293] unto him that put [5293] all things [3956] under [5293] him [846], that [2443] God [2316] may be [5600] all [3956] in [1722] all [3956].
21 Because [3754] the creature [2937] itself [846] also [2532] shall be delivered [1659] from [575] the bondage [1397] of corruption [5356] into [1519] the glorious [1391] liberty [1657] of the children [5043] of God [2316].
4 But [1161] when [3753] the fulness [4138] of the time [5550] was come [2064], God [2316] sent forth [1821] his [846] Son [5207], made [1096] of [1537] a woman [1135], made [1096] under [5259] the law [3551],
19 For it pleased [2106] the Father that [3754] in [1722] him [846] should [2730] all [3956] fulness [4138] dwell [2730];
16 And [2532] of [1537] his [846] fulness [4138] have [2983] all [3956] we [2249] received [2983], and [2532] grace [5485] for [473] grace [5485].
12 Now [1161] if [1487] the fall [3900] of them [846] be the riches [4149] of the world [2889], and [2532] the diminishing [2275] of them [846] the riches [4149] of the Gentiles [1484]; how [4214] much more [3123] their [846] fulness [4138]?
2 If [1489] ye have heard [191] of the dispensation [3622] of the grace [5485] of God [2316] which [3588] is given [1325] me [3427] to [1519] you-ward [5209]:
25 Whereof [3739] I [1473] am made [1096] a minister [1249], according to [2596] the dispensation [3622] of God [2316] which [3588] is given [1325] to me [3427] for [1519] you [5209], to fulfil [4137] the word [3056] of God [2316];
14 For [1063] he [846] is [2076] our [2257] peace [1515], who [3588] hath made [4160] both [297] one [1520], and [2532] hath broken down [3089] the middle wall [3320] of partition [5418] between us;
15 Having abolished [2673] in [1722] his [846] flesh [4561] the enmity [2189], even the law [3551] of commandments [1785] contained in [1722] ordinances [1378]; for to [2443] make [2936] in [1722] himself [1438] of twain [1417] one [1519] [1520] new [2537] man [444], so making [4160] peace [1515];
16 And [2532] that he might reconcile [604] both [297] unto God [2316] in [1722] one [1520] body [4983] by [1223] the cross [4716], having slain [615] the enmity [2189] thereby [1722] [846]:
17 And [2532] came [2064] and preached [2097] peace [1515] to you [5213] which [3588] were afar off [3112], and [2532] to them that were nigh [1451].
26 Men's [444] hearts failing them [674] for [575] fear [5401], and [2532] for looking after [4329] those things which are coming on [1904] the earth [3625]: for [1063] the powers [1411] of heaven [3772] shall be shaken [4531].
29 Immediately [1161] [2112] after [3326] the tribulation [2347] of those [1565] days [2250] shall the sun [2246] be darkened [4654], and [2532] the moon [4582] shall [1325] not [3756] give [1325] her [846] light [5338], and [2532] the stars [792] shall fall [4098] from [575] heaven [3772], and [2532] the powers [1411] of the heavens [3772] shall be shaken [4531]:
45 Who [5101] then [686] is [2076] a faithful [4103] and [2532] wise [5429] servant [1401], whom [3739] his [846] lord [2962] hath made ruler [2525] over [1909] his [846] household [2322], to give [1325] them [846] meat [5160] in [1722] due season [2540]?
