A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
What is it, Lord?--language which, tremulously though it was uttered, betokened childlike reverence and humility.

Thy prayers and thine alms--The way in which both are specified is emphatic. The one denotes the spiritual outgoing of his soul to God, the other its practical outgoing to men.

are come up for a memorial before God--that is, as a sacrifice well-pleasing unto God, as an odor of a sweet smell (Rev 8:4).

4 And [2532] the smoke [2586] of the incense [2368], which came with the prayers [4335] of the saints [40], ascended up [305] before [1799] God [2316] out of [1537] the angel's [32] hand [5495].
3 Nevertheless [061] there are good [02896] things [01697] found [04672] in thee, in that thou hast taken away [01197] the groves [0842] out of the land [0776], and hast prepared [03559] thine heart [03824] to seek [01875] God [0430].
13 And all Israel [03478] shall mourn [05594] for him, and bury [06912] him: for he only of Jeroboam [03379] shall come [0935] to the grave [06913], because in him there is found [04672] some good [02896] thing [01697] toward the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] in the house [01004] of Jeroboam [03379].
1 Keep [08104] thy foot [07272] when thou goest [03212] to the house [01004] of God [0430], and be more ready [07138] to hear [08085], than to give [05414] the sacrifice [02077] of fools [03684]: for they consider [03045] not that they do [06213] evil [07451].
6 For I desired [02654] mercy [02617], and not sacrifice [02077]; and the knowledge [01847] of God [0430] more than burnt offerings [05930].
22 And Samuel [08050] said [0559], Hath the LORD [03068] as great delight [02656] in burnt offerings [05930] and sacrifices [02077], as in obeying [08085] the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068]? Behold, to obey [08085] is better [02896] than sacrifice [02077], and to hearken [07181] than the fat [02459] of rams [0352].
21 I hate [08130], I despise [03988] your feast days [02282], and I will not smell [07306] in your solemn assemblies [06116].
22 Though ye offer [05927] me burnt offerings [05930] and your meat offerings [04503], I will not accept [07521] them: neither will I regard [05027] the peace offerings [08002] of your fat beasts [04806].
11 To what [04100] purpose is the multitude [07230] of your sacrifices [02077] unto me? saith [0559] the LORD [03068]: I am full [07646] of the burnt offerings [05930] of rams [0352], and the fat [02459] of fed beasts [04806]; and I delight [02654] not in the blood [01818] of bullocks [06499], or of lambs [03532], or of he goats [06260].
12 When ye come [0935] to appear [07200] before [06440] me, who hath required [01245] this at your hand [03027], to tread [07429] my courts [02691]?
13 Bring [0935] no more [03254] vain [07723] oblations [04503]; incense [07004] is an abomination [08441] unto me; the new moons [02320] and sabbaths [07676], the calling [07121] of assemblies [04744], I cannot away with [03201]; it is iniquity [0205], even the solemn meeting [06116].
14 Your new moons [02320] and your appointed feasts [04150] my soul [05315] hateth [08130]: they are a trouble [02960] unto me; I am weary [03811] to bear [05375] them.
15 And when ye spread forth [06566] your hands [03709], I will hide [05956] mine eyes [05869] from you: yea, when ye make many [07235] prayers [08605], I will not hear [08085]: your hands [03027] are full [04390] of blood [01818].
19 I have not spoken [01696] in secret [05643], in a dark [02822] place [04725] of the earth [0776]: I said [0559] not unto the seed [02233] of Jacob [03290], Seek [01245] ye me in vain [08414]: I the LORD [03068] speak [01696] righteousness [06664], I declare [05046] things that are right [04339].
5 And [1161] he said [2036], Who [5101] art thou [1488], Lord [2962]? And [1161] the Lord [2962] said [2036], I [1473] am [1510] Jesus [2424] whom [3739] thou [4771] persecutest [1377]: it is hard [4642] for thee [4671] to kick [2979] against [4314] the pricks [2759].
20 And [2532] he closed [4428] the book [975], and he gave it again [591] to the minister [5257], and sat down [2523]. And [2532] the eyes [3788] of all them [3956] that were [2258] in [1722] the synagogue [4864] were fastened [816] on him [846].
55 But [1161] he, being [5225] full [4134] of the Holy [40] Ghost [4151], looked up stedfastly [816] into [1519] heaven [3772], and saw [1492] the glory [1391] of God [2316], and [2532] Jesus [2424] standing [2476] on [1537] the right hand [1188] of God [2316],
16 And the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] the memorial [0234] of it, part of the beaten corn [01643] thereof, and part of the oil [08081] thereof, with all the frankincense [03828] thereof: it is an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068].
