A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Moses and Aaron fell on their faces--as humble and earnest suppliants--either to the people, entreating them to desist from so perverse a design; or rather, to God, as the usual and only refuge from the violence of that tumultuous and stiff-necked rabble--a hopeful means of softening and impressing their hearts.

10 But all the congregation [05712] bade [0559] stone [07275] them with stones [068]. And the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] in the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before all the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
22 And they fell [05307] upon their faces [06440], and said [0559], O God [0410], the God [0430] of the spirits [07307] of all flesh [01320], shall one [0259] man [0376] sin [02398], and wilt thou be wroth [07107] with all the congregation [05712]?
29 Then I said [0559] unto you, Dread [06206] not, neither be afraid [03372] of them.
30 And Caleb [03612] stilled [02013] the people [05971] before Moses [04872], and said [0559], Let us go up [05927] at once [05927], and possess [03423] it; for we are well able [03201] to overcome [03201] it.
10 And it came to pass, as Aaron [0175] spake [01696] unto the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], that they looked [06437] toward the wilderness [04057], and, behold, the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] in the cloud [06051].
23 And ye shall not walk [03212] in the manners [02708] of the nation [01471], which I cast out [07971] before [06440] you: for they committed [06213] all these things, and therefore I abhorred [06973] them.
25 And the land [0776] is defiled [02930]: therefore I do visit [06485] the iniquity [05771] thereof upon it, and the land [0776] itself vomiteth out [06958] her inhabitants [03427].
24 For I will cast out [03423] the nations [01471] before [06440] thee, and enlarge [07337] thy borders [01366]: neither shall any man [0376] desire [02530] thy land [0776], when thou shalt go up [05927] to appear [07200] before [06440] the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] thrice [06471] [07969] in the year [08141].
16 But in the fourth [07243] generation [01755] they shall come hither [02008] again [07725]: for the iniquity [05771] of the Amorites [0567] is not yet [02008] full [08003].
2 That walk [01980] to go down [03381] into Egypt [04714], and have not asked [07592] at my mouth [06310]; to strengthen [05810] themselves in the strength [04581] of Pharaoh [06547], and to trust [02620] in the shadow [06738] of Egypt [04714]!
5 The LORD [03068] is thy keeper [08104]: the LORD [03068] is thy shade [06738] upon thy right [03225] hand [03027].
4 Have all the workers [06466] of iniquity [0205] no knowledge [03045]? who eat up [0398] my people [05971] as they eat [0398] bread [03899], and call [07121] not upon the LORD [03068].
16 And thou shalt consume [0398] all the people [05971] which the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] shall deliver [05414] thee; thine eye [05869] shall have no pity [02347] upon them: neither shalt thou serve [05647] their gods [0430]; for that will be a snare [04170] unto thee.
8 God [0410] brought him forth [03318] out of Egypt [04714]; he hath as it were the strength [08443] of an unicorn [07214]: he shall eat up [0398] the nations [01471] his enemies [06862], and shall break [01633] their bones [06106], and pierce [04272] them through with his arrows [02671].
4 And Moab [04124] said [0559] unto the elders [02205] of Midian [04080], Now shall this company [06951] lick up [03897] all that are round about [05439] us, as the ox [07794] licketh up [03897] the grass [03418] of the field [07704]. And Balak [01111] the son [01121] of Zippor [06834] was king [04428] of the Moabites [04124] at that time [06256].
6 And Moses [04872] said [0559] unto Aaron [0175], and unto Eleazar [0499] and unto Ithamar [0385], his sons [01121], Uncover [06544] not your heads [07218], neither rend [06533] your clothes [0899]; lest ye die [04191], and lest wrath [07107] come upon all the people [05712]: but let your brethren [0251], the whole house [01004] of Israel [03478], bewail [01058] the burning [08316] which the LORD [03068] hath kindled [08313].
29 Then I said [0559] unto you, Dread [06206] not, neither be afraid [03372] of them.
30 The LORD [03068] your God [0430] which goeth [01980] before [06440] you, he shall fight [03898] for you, according to all that he did [06213] for you in Egypt [04714] before your eyes [05869];
31 And in the wilderness [04057], where thou hast seen [07200] how that the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] bare [05375] thee, as a man [0376] doth bear [05375] his son [01121], in all the way [01870] that ye went [01980], until ye came [0935] into this place [04725].
