A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
And now--Since we who serve Jehovah are not prosperous and "the proud" heathen flourish in prosperity, we must pronounce them the favorites of God (Mal 2:17; Psa 73:12).

set up--literally, "built up": metaphor from architecture (Pro 24:3; compare Gen 16:2, Margin; Gen 30:3, Margin.)

tempt God--dare God to punish them, by breaking His laws (Psa 95:9).

9 When your fathers [01] tempted [05254] me, proved [0974] me, and saw [07200] my work [06467].
3 And she said [0559], Behold my maid [0519] Bilhah [01090], go in [0935] unto her; and she shall bear [03205] upon my knees [01290], that I may also have children [01129] by her.
2 And Sarai [08297] said [0559] unto Abram [087], Behold now, the LORD [03068] hath restrained me [06113] from bearing [03205]: I pray thee, go in [0935] unto my maid [08198]; it may [0194] be that I may obtain children [01129] by her. And Abram [087] hearkened [08085] to the voice [06963] of Sarai [08297].
3 Through wisdom [02451] is an house [01004] builded [01129]; and by understanding [08394] it is established [03559]:
12 Behold, these are the ungodly [07563], who prosper [07961] in the world [05769]; they increase [07685] in riches [02428].
17 Ye have wearied [03021] the LORD [03068] with your words [01697]. Yet ye say [0559], Wherein have we wearied [03021] him? When ye say [0559], Every one that doeth [06213] evil [07451] is good [02896] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068], and he delighteth [02654] in them; or, Where is the God [0430] of judgment [04941]?
10 And yet for all this her treacherous [0901] sister [0269] Judah [03063] hath not turned [07725] unto me with her whole heart [03820], but feignedly [08267], saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently [03925] learn [03925] the ways [01870] of my people [05971], to swear [07650] by my name [08034], The LORD [03068] liveth [02416]; as they taught [03925] my people [05971] to swear [07650] by Baal [01168]; then shall they be built [01129] in the midst [08432] of my people [05971].
122 Be surety [06148] for thy servant [05650] for good [02896]: let not the proud [02086] oppress [06231] me.
51 The proud [02086] have had me greatly [03966] in derision [03887]: yet have I not declined [05186] from thy law [08451].
78 Let the proud [02086] be ashamed [0954]; for they dealt perversely [05791] with me without a cause [08267]: but I will meditate [07878] in thy precepts [06490].
85 The proud [02086] have digged [03738] pits [07882] for me, which are not after thy law [08451].
69 The proud [02086] have forged [02950] a lie [08267] against me: but I will keep [05341] thy precepts [06490] with my whole heart [03820].
14 O God [0430], the proud [02086] are risen [06965] against me, and the assemblies [05712] of violent [06184] men have sought [01245] after my soul [05315]; and have not set [07760] thee before them.
2 Then spake [0559] Azariah [05838] the son [01121] of Hoshaiah [01955], and Johanan [03110] the son [01121] of Kareah [07143], and all the proud [02086] men [0582], saying [0559] unto Jeremiah [03414], Thou speakest [01696] falsely [08267]: the LORD [03068] our God [0430] hath not sent [07971] thee to say [0559], Go [0935] not into Egypt [04714] to sojourn [01481] there:
12 And the man [0376] that will do [06213] presumptuously [02087], and will not hearken [08085] unto the priest [03548] that standeth [05975] to minister [08334] there before the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], or unto the judge [08199], even that man [0376] shall die [04191]: and thou shalt put away [01197] the evil [07451] from Israel [03478].
13 And all the people [05971] shall hear [08085], and fear [03372], and do no more presumptuously [02102].
43 So I spake [01696] unto you; and ye would not hear [08085], but rebelled [04784] against the commandment [06310] of the LORD [03068], and went [05927] presumptuously [02102] up [05927] into the hill [02022].
41 Then ye answered [06030] and said [0559] unto me, We have sinned [02398] against the LORD [03068], we will go up [05927] and fight [03898], according to all that the LORD [03068] our God [0430] commanded [06680] us. And when ye had girded [02296] on every man [0376] his weapons [03627] of war [04421], ye were ready [01951] to go up [05927] into the hill [02022].
16 But they and our fathers [01] dealt proudly [02102], and hardened [07185] their necks [06203], and hearkened [08085] not to thy commandments [04687],
11 Now I know [03045] that the LORD [03068] is greater [01419] than all gods [0430]: for in the thing [01697] wherein they dealt proudly [02102] he was above them.
24 Proud [02086] and haughty [03093] scorner [03887] is his name [08034], who dealeth [06213] in proud [02087] wrath [05678].
21 Thou hast rebuked [01605] the proud [02086] that are cursed [0779], which do err [07686] from thy commandments [04687].
12 And all nations [01471] shall call you blessed [0833]: for ye shall be a delightsome [02656] land [0776], saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
