Come to Beth-el and transgress - Having foretold their captivity, the prophet tries irony. But his irony is in bidding them go on to do, what they were doing earnestly, what they were set upon doing, and would not be withdrawn from. As Micaiah in irony, until adjured in the name of God, joined Ahab's court-priests, bidding, him "go to Ramoth-Gilead" Kg1 22:15, where he was to perish; or Elijah said to the priests of Baal, "Cry aloud, for he is a god" Kg1 18:27; or our Lord, "Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers" Mat 23:32; so Amos bids them do all they did, in their divided service of God, but tells them that to multiply all such service was to multiply transgression. Yet they were diligent in their way. Their offerings were daily, as at Jerusalem; the tithes of the third year for the poor was paid, as God had ordained Deu 14:28; Deu 26:12. They were punctual in these parts of the ritual, and thought much of their punctuality. So well did they count themselves to stand with God, that there is no mention of sin offering or trespass offering. Their sacrifices were "sacrifics of thanksgiving" and "free will offerings," as if out of exuberance of devotion, such as David said that Zion would "offer," when God had been "favorable and gracious unto" her Psa 51:18-19. These things they did; they "proclaimed" and "published" them, like the hypocrites whom our Lord reproves, "sounding a trumpet before them" Mat 6:2 when they did alms; proclaiming these private offerings, as God bade proclaim the solemn assemblies. "For so ye love." They did it, because they liked it, and it cost them nothing, for which they cared. It was more than most Christians will sacrifice, two fifteenths of their yearly income, if they gave the yearly tithes, which were to be shared with the poor also. But they would not sacrifice what God, above all, required, the fundamental breach of God's law, on which their kingdom rested, "the sin which Jeroboam made Israel to sin." They did what they liked; they were pleased with it, and they had that pleasure for their only reward, as it is of all which is not done for God.

After this threat directed against the voluptuous women of the capital, the prophecy turns again to all the people. In bitter irony, Amos tells them to go on with zeal in their idolatrous sacrifices, and to multiply their sin. But they will not keep back the divine judgment by so doing. Amo 4:4. "Go to Bethel, and sin; to Gilgal, multiply sinning; and offer your slain-offerings in the morning, your tithes every three days. Amo 4:5. And kindle praise-offerings of that which is leavened, and cry out freewill-offerings, proclaim it; for so ye love it, O sons of Israel, is the saying of the Lord, of Jehovah." "Amos here describes how zealously the people of Israel went on pilgrimage to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Beersheba, those places of sacred associations; with what superabundant diligence they offered sacrifice and paid tithes; who they would rather do too much than too little, so that they even burnt upon the altar a portion of the leavened loaves of the praise-offering, which were only intended for the sacrificial meals, although none but unleavened bread was allowed to be offered; and lastly, how in their pure zeal for multiplying the works of piety, they so completely mistook their nature, as to summon by a public proclamation to the presentation of freewill-offerings, the very peculiarity of which consisted in the fact that they had no other prompting than the will of the offerer" (v. The irony of the summons to maintain their worship comes out very distinctly in the words וּפשׁעוּ, and sin, or fall away from God. הגּלגּל is not a nominative absolute, "as for Gilgal," but an accusative, and בּאוּ is to be repeated from the first clause. The absence of the copula before הרבּוּ does not compel us to reject the Masoretic accentuation, and connect הגּלגּל with פּלשׁעוּ, as Hitzig does, so as to obtain the unnatural thought, "sin ye towards Gilgal." On Gilgal mentioned along with Bethel as a place of idolatrous worship (here and Amo 5:5, as in Hos 4:15; Hos 9:15, and Hos 12:12), see at Hos 4:15. Offer your slain-offerings labbōqer, for the morning, i.e., every morning, like layyōm in Jer 37:21. This is required by the parallel lishlōsheth yâmı̄m, on the three of days, i.e., every three days. זבחים ... הביאוּ does not refer to the morning sacrifice prescribed in the law (Num 28:3) - for that is always called ‛ōlâh, not zebach - but to slain sacrifices that were offered every morning, although the offering of zebhâchı̄m every morning presupposes the presentation of the daily morning burnt-offering. What is said concerning the tithe rests upon the Mosaic law of the second tithe, which was to be brought every three years (Deu 14:28; Deu 26:12; compare my Bibl. Archol. 71, Anm. 7). The two clauses, however, are not to be understood as implying that the Israelites had offered slain sacrifices every morning, and tithe every three days. Amos is speaking hyperbolically, to depict the great zeal displayed in their worship; and the thought is simply this: "If ye would offer slain sacrifices every morning, and tithe every three days, ye would only thereby increase your apostasy from the living God." The words, "kindle praise-offerings of that which is leavened," have been misinterpreted in various ways. קטּר, an inf. absol. used instead of the imperative (see Ges. 131, 4, b). According to Lev 7:12-14, the praise-offering (tōdâh) was to consist not only of unleavened cakes and pancakes with oil poured upon them, but also of cakes of leavened bread. The latter, however, were not to be placed upon the altar, but one of them was to be assigned to the priest who sprinkled the blood, and the rest to be eaten at the sacrificial meal. Amos now charges the people with having offered that which was leavened instead of unleavened cakes and pancakes, and with having burned it upon the altar, contrary to the express prohibition of the law in Lev 2:11. His words are not to be understood as signifying that, although outwardly the praise-offerings consisted of that which was unleavened, according to the command of the law, yet inwardly they were so base that they resembled unleavened cakes, inasmuch as whilst the material of the leaven was absent, the true nature of the leaven - namely, malice and wickedness - was there in all the greater quantity (Hengstenberg, Dissertations, vol. i. p. 143 translation). The meaning is rather this, that they were not content with burning upon the altar unleavened cakes made from the materials provided for the sacrifice, but that they burned some of the leavened loaves as well, in order to offer as much as possible to God. What follows answers to this: call out nedâbhōth, i.e., call out that men are to present freewill-offerings. The emphasis is laid upon קראוּ, which is therefore still further strengthened by השׁמעוּ. Their calling out nedâbhōth, i.e., their ordering freewill-offerings to be presented, was an exaggerated act of zeal, inasmuch as the sacrifices which ought to have been brought out of purely spontaneous impulse (cf. Lev 22:18.; Deu 12:6), were turned into a matter of moral compulsion, or rather of legal command. The words, "for so ye love it," show how this zeal in the worship lay at the heart of the nation. It is also evident from the whole account, that the worship in the kingdom of the ten tribes was conducted generally according to the precepts of the Mosaic law.

Come to Beth - el - A strong irony, giving them over as incorrigible. At Gilgal - Gilgal was a place where much idolatry was acted. Every morning - In the same irony God reproves their sins tho' they imitated the instituted worship at Jerusalem. Three years - God had Deu 14:28, commanded every third year that all the tithe of that year should be brought, and laid up in a publick store - house.

Come to Beth-el and transgress - Spoken ironically. Go on to worship your calves at Beth-el; and multiply your transgressions at Gilgal; the very place where I rolled away the reproach of your fathers, by admitting them there into my covenant by circumcision. A place that should have ever been sacred to me; but you have now desecrated it by enormous idolatries. Let your morning and evening sacrifices be offered still to your senseless gods; and continue to support your present vicious priesthood by the regular triennial tithes which should have been employed in my service; and: -

¹² And ye shall rejoice [08055] before [06440] the LORD [03068] your God [0430], ye, and your sons [01121], and your daughters [01323], and your menservants [05650], and your maidservants [0519], and the Levite [03881] that is within your gates [08179]; forasmuch [03588] as he hath no part [02506] nor inheritance [05159] with you.
¹³ Take heed [08104] to thyself that thou offer [05927] not thy burnt offerings [05930] in every place [04725] that thou seest [07200]:
¹⁴ But in the place [04725] which the LORD [03068] shall choose [0977] in one [0259] of thy tribes [07626], there thou shalt offer [05927] thy burnt offerings [05930], and there thou shalt do [06213] all that I command [06680] thee.

²⁵ Then Jeroboam [03379] built [01129] Shechem [07927] in mount [02022] Ephraim [0669], and dwelt [03427] therein; and went out [03318] from thence, and built [01129] Penuel [06439].
²⁶ And Jeroboam [03379] said [0559] in his heart [03820], Now shall the kingdom [04467] return [07725] to the house [01004] of David [01732]:
²⁷ If this people [05971] go up [05927] to do [06213] sacrifice [02077] in the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] at Jerusalem [03389], then shall the heart [03820] of this people [05971] turn again [07725] unto their lord [0113], even unto Rehoboam [07346] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and they shall kill [02026] me, and go again [07725] to Rehoboam [07346] king [04428] of Judah [03063].
²⁸ Whereupon the king [04428] took counsel [03289], and made [06213] two [08147] calves [05695] of gold [02091], and said [0559] unto them, It is too much [07227] for you to go up [05927] to Jerusalem [03389]: behold thy gods [0430], O Israel [03478], which brought thee up [05927] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714].
²⁹ And he set [07760] the one [0259] in Bethel [01008], and the other [0259] put [05414] he in Dan [01835].
³⁰ And this thing [01697] became a sin [02403]: for the people [05971] went [03212] to worship before [06440] the one [0259], even unto Dan [01835].
³¹ And he made [06213] an house [01004] of high places [01116], and made [06213] priests [03548] of the lowest [07098] of the people [05971], which were not of the sons [01121] of Levi [03878].
³² And Jeroboam [03379] ordained [06213] a feast [02282] in the eighth [08066] month [02320], on the fifteenth [02568] [06240] day [03117] of the month [02320], like unto the feast [02282] that is in Judah [03063], and he offered [05927] upon the altar [04196]. So did [06213] he in Bethel [01008], sacrificing [02076] unto the calves [05695] that he had made [06213]: and he placed [05975] in Bethel [01008] the priests [03548] of the high places [01116] which he had made [06213].
³³ So he offered [05927] upon the altar [04196] which he had made [06213] in Bethel [01008] the fifteenth [02568] [06240] day [03117] of the eighth [08066] month [02320], even in the month [02320] which he had devised [0908] of his own heart [03820]; and ordained [06213] a feast [02282] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478]: and he offered [05927] upon the altar [04196], and burnt incense [06999].

⁶ And thither ye shall bring [0935] your burnt offerings [05930], and your sacrifices [02077], and your tithes [04643], and heave offerings [08641] of your hand [03027], and your vows [05088], and your freewill offerings [05071], and the firstlings [01062] of your herds [01241] and of your flocks [06629]:

¹⁸ Speak [01696] unto Aaron [0175], and to his sons [01121], and unto all the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and say [0559] unto them, Whatsoever [0376] he be of the house [01004] of Israel [03478], or of the strangers [01616] in Israel [03478], that will offer [07126] his oblation [07133] for all his vows [05088], and for all his freewill offerings [05071], which they will offer [07126] unto the LORD [03068] for a burnt offering [05930];

¹¹ No meat offering [04503], which ye shall bring [07126] unto the LORD [03068], shall be made [06213] with leaven [02557]: for ye shall burn [06999] no leaven [07603], nor any honey [01706], in any offering [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801].

¹² If he offer [07126] it for a thanksgiving [08426], then he shall offer [07126] with the sacrifice [02077] of thanksgiving [08426] unleavened [04682] cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], and unleavened [04682] wafers [07550] anointed [04886] with oil [08081], and cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], of fine flour [05560], fried [07246].
¹³ Besides the cakes [02471], he shall offer [07126] for his offering [07133] leavened [02557] bread [03899] with the sacrifice [02077] of thanksgiving [08426] of his peace offerings [08002].
¹⁴ And of it he shall offer [07126] one [0259] out of the whole oblation [07133] for an heave offering [08641] unto the LORD [03068], and it shall be the priest's [03548] that sprinkleth [02236] the blood [01818] of the peace offerings [08002].

²¹ Then Zedekiah [06667] the king [04428] commanded [06680] that they should commit [06485] Jeremiah [03414] into the court [02691] of the prison [04307], and that they should give [05414] him daily [03117] a piece [03603] of bread [03899] out of the bakers [0644] ' street [02351], until all the bread [03899] in the city [05892] were spent [08552]. Thus Jeremiah [03414] remained [03427] in the court [02691] of the prison [04307].

¹² And Jacob [03290] fled [01272] into the country [07704] of Syria [0758], and Israel [03478] served [05647] for a wife [0802], and for a wife [0802] he kept [08104] sheep.

⁵ But seek [01875] not Bethel [01008], nor enter [0935] into Gilgal [01537], and pass [05674] not to Beersheba [0884]: for Gilgal [01537] shall surely [01540] go into captivity [01540], and Bethel [01008] shall come to nought [0205].

⁵ And offer [06999] a sacrifice of thanksgiving [08426] with leaven [02557], and proclaim [07121] and publish [08085] the free offerings [05071]: for this [03651] liketh [0157] you, O ye children [01121] of Israel [03478], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].

⁴ Come [0935] to Bethel [01008], and transgress [06586]; at Gilgal [01537] multiply [07235] transgression [06586]; and bring [0935] your sacrifices [02077] every morning [01242], and your tithes [04643] after three [07969] years [03117]:
