THE PEACE OFFERING OF THE HERD. (Lev. 3:1-17)
if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering--"Peace" being used in Scripture to denote prosperity and happiness generally, a peace offering was a voluntary tribute of gratitude for health or other benefits. In this view it was eucharistic, being a token of thanksgiving for benefits already received, or it was sometimes votive, presented in prayer for benefits wished for in the future.
of the herd--This kind of offering being of a festive character, either male or female, if without blemish, might be used, as both of them were equally good for food, and, if the circumstances of the offerer allowed it, it might be a calf. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The peace-offering (like the burnt-offering, Lev 1:3, and the Minchah, Lev 2:1) is here spoken of as if it was familiarly known before the giving of the Law. "Peace-offering" seems preferable to "thank-offering," which occurs in several places in the margin of our Bible. "thank-offering" appears to be the right name for a subordinate class of peace-offering. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
peace-offering
The peace-offering. The whole work of Christ in relation to the believer's peace is here in type. He made peace, (Col 1:20) proclaimed peace, (Eph 2:17) and is our peace, (Eph 2:14).
In Christ, God and the sinner meet in peace; God is propitiated, the sinner reconciled - both alike satisfied with what Christ has done. But all this at the cost of blood and fire. The details speak of fellowship. This brings in prominently the thought of fellowship with God through Christ. Hence the peace-offering is set forth as affording food for the priests (Lev 7:31-34). Observe that it is the breast (affections) and shoulders (strength) upon which we as priests (Pe1 2:9) feed in fellowship with the Father. This it is which makes the peace-offering especially a thank-offering. (Lev 7:11); (Lev 7:12). |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The Peace-Offerings. - The third kind of sacrifice is called שׁלמים זבח, commonly rendered thank-offering, but more correctly a saving-offering (Heilsopfer: Angl. peace-offering). Besides this fuller form, which is the one most commonly employed in Leviticus, we meet with the abbreviated forms זבחים and שׁלמים: e.g., זבח in Lev 7:16-17; Lev 23:37, more especially in combination with עלה, Lev 17:8 cf. Exo 10:25; Exo 18:12; Num 15:3, Num 15:5; Deu 12:27; Jos 22:27; Sa1 6:15; Sa1 15:22; Kg2 5:17; Kg2 10:24; Isa 56:7; Jer 6:20; Jer 7:21; Jer 17:26, etc., - and שׁלמים in Lev 9:22; Exo 20:24; Exo 32:6; Deu 27:7; Jos 8:31; Jdg 20:26; Jdg 21:4; Sa1 13:9; Sa2 6:17-18; Sa2 24:25; Kg1 3:15, etc. זבח is derived from זבח, which is not applied to slaughtering generally (שׁחט), but, with the exception of Deu 12:15, where the use of זבח for slaughtering is occasioned by the retrospective reference to Lev 17:3-4, is always used for slaying as a sacrifice, or sacrificing; and even in Sa1 28:24; Eze 34:3 and Eze 39:17, it is only used in a figurative sense. The real meaning, therefore, is sacrificial slaughtering, or slaughtered sacrifice. It is sometimes used in a wider sense, and applied to every kind of bleeding sacrifice (Sa1 1:21; Sa1 2:19), especially in connection with minchah (Sa1 2:29; Psa 40:7; Isa 19:21; Dan 9:27, etc.); but it is mostly used in a more restricted sense, and applied to the peace-offerings, or slain offerings, which culminated in a sacrificial meal, as distinguished from the burnt and sin-offerings, in which case it is synonymous with שׁלמים or שׁלמים זבח. The word shelamim, the singular of which (Shelem) is only met with in Amo 5:22, is applied exclusively to these sacrifices, and is derived from שׁלם to be whole, uninjured. It does not mean "compensation or restitution," for which we find the nouns שׁלּם (Deu 32:35), שׁלּוּם (Hos 9:7), and שׁלּוּמה (Psa 91:8), formed from the Piel שׁלּם, but integritas completa, pacifica, beata, answering to the Sept. rendering σωτήριον. The plural denotes the entire round of blessings and powers, by which the salvation or integrity of man in his relation to God is established and secured. The object of the shelamim was invariably salvation: sometimes they were offered as an embodiment of thanksgiving for salvation already received, sometimes as a prayer for the salvation desired; so that they embraced both supplicatory offerings and thank-offerings, and were offered even in times of misfortune, or on the day on which supplication was offered for the help of God (Jdg 20:26; Jdg 21:4; Sa1 13:9; Sa2 24:25).
(Note: Cf. Hengstenberg, Dissertations. Outram's explanation is quite correct: Sacrificia salutaria in sacris litteris shelamim dicta, ut quae semper de rebus prosperis fieri solerent, impetratis utique aut impetrandis.)
The law distinguishes three different kinds: praise-offerings, vow-offerings, and freewill-offerings (Lev 7:12, Lev 7:16). They were all restricted to oxen, sheep, and goats, either male or female, pigeons not being allowed, as they were always accompanied with a common sacrificial meal, for which a pair of pigeons did not suffice.
Lev 3:1-2
In the act of sacrificing, the presentation of the animal before Jehovah, the laying on of hands, the slaughtering, and the sprinkling of the blood were the same as in the case of the burnt-offering (Lev 1:3-5). It was in the application of the flesh that the difference first appeared.
Lev 3:3-4
The person presenting the sacrifice was to offer as a firing for Jehovah, first, "the fat which covered the entrails" (Lev 1:9), i.e., the large net which stretches from the stomach over the bowels and completely envelopes the latter, and which is only met with in the case of men and the mammalia generally, and in the ruminant animals abounds with fat; secondly, "all the fat on the entrails," i.e., the fat attached to the intestines, which could easily be peeled off; thirdly, "the two kidneys, and the fat upon them (and) that upon the loins (הכּסלים), i.e., upon the inner muscles of the loins, or in the region of the kidneys; and fourthly, "the net upon the liver." The net (היּתרת) upon (על Lev 3:4, Lev 3:10, Lev 3:15; Lev 4:9; Lev 7:4; Exo 29:13), or from (מן Lev 9:10), or of the liver (Lev 8:16, Lev 8:25; Lev 9:19; Exo 29:22), cannot be the large lobe of the liver, ὁ λοβὸς τοῦ ἥπατος (lxx), because this is part of the liver itself, and does not lie על־כּבד over (upon) the liver; nor is it simply a portion of fat, but the small net (omentum minus), the liver-net, or stomach-net (recticulum jecoris; Vulg., Luth., De Wette, and Knobel), which commences at the division between the right and left lobes of the liver, and stretches on the one side across the stomach, and on the other to the region of the kidneys. Hence the clause, "on the kidneys (i.e., by them, as far as it reaches) shall he take it away." This smaller net is delicate, but not so fat as the larger net; though it still forms part of the fat portions. The word יתרת, which only occurs in the passages quoted, is to be explained from the Arabic and Ethiopic (to stretch over, to stretch out), whence also the words יתר a cord (Jdg 16:7; Psa 11:2), and מיתר the bow-string (Psa 21:13) or extended tent-ropes (Exo 35:18), are derived. The four portions mentioned comprehended all the separable fat in the inside of the sacrificial animal. Hence they were also designated "all the fat" of the sacrifice (Lev 3:16; Lev 4:8, Lev 4:19, Lev 4:26, Lev 4:31, Lev 4:35; Lev 7:3), or briefly "the fat" (החלב Lev 3:9; Lev 7:33; Lev 16:25; Lev 17:6; Num 18:17), "the fat portions" (החלבים Lev 6:5; Lev 8:26; Lev 9:19-20, Lev 9:24; Lev 10:15).
Lev 3:5
This fat the priests were to burn upon the altar, over the burnt sacrifice, on the pieces of wood upon the fire. על־העלה does not mean "in the manner or style of the burnt-offering" (Knobel), but "upon (over) the burnt-offering." For apart from the fact that על cannot be shown to have this meaning, the peace-offering was preceded as a rule by the burnt-offering. At any rate it was always preceded by the daily burnt-offering, which burned, if not all day, at all events the whole of the forenoon, until it was quite consumed; so that the fat portions of the peace-offerings were to be laid upon the burnt-offering which was burning already. That this is the meaning of על־העלה is placed beyond all doubt, both by Lev 6:5, where the priest is directed to burn wood every morning upon the fire of the altar, and then to place the burnt-offering upon it (עליה), and upon that to cause the fat portions of the peace-offerings to evaporate in smoke, and also by Lev 9:14, where Aaron is said first of all to have burned the flesh and head of the burnt-offering upon the altar, then to have washed the entrails and legs of the animal, and burned them on the altar, העלה על, i.e., upon (over) the portions of the burnt-offering that were burning already. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
A peace - offering - This was an offering for peace and prosperity, and the blessing of God, either, obtained, and so it was a thank - offering, or, desired; and so it was a kind of supplication to God. A female - Which were allowed here, tho' not in burnt - offerings, because those principally respected the honour of God, who is to be served with the best; but the peace - offerings did primarily respect the benefit of the offerer, and therefore the choice was left to himself. Burnt - offerings had regard to God, as in himself the best of beings, and therefore were wholly burned. But peace - offerings had regard to God as a benefactor to his creatures, and therefore were divided between the altar, the priest, and the offerer. |

Peace-offering - שלמים shelamim, an offering to make peace between God and man; see on Leviticus 7 (note), and Gen 14:18 (note). |
1 And when any [05315] will offer [07126] a meat [04503] offering [07133] unto the LORD [03068], his offering [07133] shall be of fine flour [05560]; and he shall pour [03332] oil [08081] upon it, and put [05414] frankincense [03828] thereon:
3 If his offering [07133] be a burnt sacrifice [05930] of the herd [01241], let him offer [07126] a male [02145] without blemish [08549]: he shall offer [07126] it of his own voluntary will [07522] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
12 If he offer [07126] it for a thanksgiving [08426], then he shall offer [07126] with the sacrifice [02077] of thanksgiving [08426] unleavened [04682] cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], and unleavened [04682] wafers [07550] anointed [04886] with oil [08081], and cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], of fine flour [05560], fried [07246].
11 And this is the law [08451] of the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002], which he shall offer [07126] unto the LORD [03068].
9 But [1161] ye [5210] are a chosen [1588] generation [1085], a royal [934] priesthood [2406], an holy [40] nation [1484], a peculiar [1519] [4047] people [2992]; that [3704] ye should shew forth [1804] the praises [703] of him who hath called [2564] you [5209] out of [1537] darkness [4655] into [1519] his [846] marvellous [2298] light [5457]:
31 And the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] the fat [02459] upon the altar [04196]: but the breast [02373] shall be Aaron's [0175] and his sons [01121]'.
32 And the right [03225] shoulder [07785] shall ye give [05414] unto the priest [03548] for an heave offering [08641] of the sacrifices [02077] of your peace offerings [08002].
33 He among the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175], that offereth [07126] the blood [01818] of the peace offerings [08002], and the fat [02459], shall have the right [03225] shoulder [07785] for his part [04490].
34 For the wave [08573] breast [02373] and the heave [08641] shoulder [07785] have I taken [03947] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478] from off the sacrifices [02077] of their peace offerings [08002], and have given [05414] them unto Aaron [0175] the priest [03548] and unto his sons [01121] by a statute [02706] for ever [05769] from among the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
14 For [1063] he [846] is [2076] our [2257] peace [1515], who [3588] hath made [4160] both [297] one [1520], and [2532] hath broken down [3089] the middle wall [3320] of partition [5418] between us;
17 And [2532] came [2064] and preached [2097] peace [1515] to you [5213] which [3588] were afar off [3112], and [2532] to them that were nigh [1451].
20 And [2532], having made peace [1517] through [1223] the blood [129] of his [846] cross [4716], by [1223] him [846] to reconcile [604] all things [3956] unto [1519] himself [846]; by [1223] him [846], I say, whether [1535] they be things in [1909] earth [1093], or [1535] things in [1722] heaven [3772].
14 And he did wash [07364] the inwards [07130] and the legs [03767], and burnt [06999] them upon the burnt offering [05930] on the altar [04196].
5 Or all that about which he hath sworn [07650] falsely [08267]; he shall even restore [07999] it in the principal [07218], and shall add [03254] the fifth part [02549] more [03254] thereto, and give [05414] it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day [03117] of his trespass offering [0819].
5 And Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] shall burn [06999] it on the altar [04196] upon the burnt sacrifice [05930], which is upon the wood [06086] that is on the fire [0784]: it is an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
15 The heave [08641] shoulder [07785] and the wave [08573] breast [02373] shall they bring [0935] with the offerings made by fire [0801] of the fat [02459], to wave [05130] it for a wave offering [08573] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and it shall be thine, and thy sons [01121]' with thee, by a statute [02706] for ever [05769]; as the LORD [03068] hath commanded [06680].
24 And there came [03318] a fire [0784] out from before [06440] the LORD [03068], and consumed [0398] upon the altar [04196] the burnt offering [05930] and the fat [02459]: which when all the people [05971] saw [07200], they shouted [07442], and fell [05307] on their faces [06440].
19 And the fat [02459] of the bullock [07794] and of the ram [0352], the rump [0451], and that which covereth [04374] the inwards, and the kidneys [03629], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516]:
20 And they put [07760] the fat [02459] upon the breasts [02373], and he burnt [06999] the fat [02459] upon the altar [04196]:
26 And out of the basket [05536] of unleavened [04682] bread [03899], that was before [06440] the LORD [03068], he took [03947] one [0259] unleavened [04682] cake [02471], and a cake [02471] of oiled [08081] bread, and one [0259] wafer [07550], and put [07760] them on the fat [02459], and upon the right [03225] shoulder [07785]:
5 Or all that about which he hath sworn [07650] falsely [08267]; he shall even restore [07999] it in the principal [07218], and shall add [03254] the fifth part [02549] more [03254] thereto, and give [05414] it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day [03117] of his trespass offering [0819].
17 But the firstling [01060] of a cow [07794], or the firstling [01060] of a sheep [03775], or the firstling [01060] of a goat [05795], thou shalt not redeem [06299]; they are holy [06944]: thou shalt sprinkle [02236] their blood [01818] upon the altar [04196], and shalt burn [06999] their fat [02459] for an offering made by fire [0801], for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
6 And the priest [03548] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], and burn [06999] the fat [02459] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
25 And the fat [02459] of the sin offering [02403] shall he burn [06999] upon the altar [04196].
33 He among the sons [01121] of Aaron [0175], that offereth [07126] the blood [01818] of the peace offerings [08002], and the fat [02459], shall have the right [03225] shoulder [07785] for his part [04490].
9 And he shall offer [07126] of the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offering [08002] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]; the fat [02459] thereof, and the whole [08549] rump [0451], it shall he take off [05493] hard [05980] by the backbone [06096]; and the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and all the fat [02459] that is upon the inwards [07130],
3 And he shall offer [07126] of it all the fat [02459] thereof; the rump [0451], and the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130],
35 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] of the lamb [03775] is taken away [05493] from the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196], according to the offerings made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for his sin [02403] that he hath committed [02398], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
31 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] is taken away [05493] from off the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
26 And he shall burn [06999] all his fat [02459] upon the altar [04196], as the fat [02459] of the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him as concerning his sin [02403], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
19 And he shall take [07311] all his fat [02459] from him, and burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196].
8 And he shall take off [07311] from it all the fat [02459] of the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403]; the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and all the fat [02459] that is upon the inwards [07130],
16 And the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196]: it is the food [03899] of the offering made by fire [0801] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381]: all the fat [02459] is the LORD'S [03068].
18 The pins [03489] of the tabernacle [04908], and the pins [03489] of the court [02691], and their cords [04340],
13 Be thou exalted [07311], LORD [03068], in thine own strength [05797]: so will we sing [07891] and praise [02167] thy power [01369].
2 For, lo, the wicked [07563] bend [01869] their bow [07198], they make ready [03559] their arrow [02671] upon the string [03499], that they may privily [0652] [01119] shoot [03384] at the upright [03477] in heart [03820].
7 And Samson [08123] said [0559] unto her, If they bind [0631] me with seven [07651] green [03892] withs [03499] that were never dried [02717], then shall I be weak [02470], and be as another [0259] man [0120].
22 Also thou shalt take [03947] of the ram [0352] the fat [02459] and the rump [0451], and the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], and the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, and the right [03225] shoulder [07785]; for it is a ram [0352] of consecration [04394]:
19 And the fat [02459] of the bullock [07794] and of the ram [0352], the rump [0451], and that which covereth [04374] the inwards, and the kidneys [03629], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516]:
25 And he took [03947] the fat [02459], and the rump [0451], and all the fat [02459] that was upon the inwards [07130], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], and the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and their fat [02459], and the right [03225] shoulder [07785]:
16 And he took [03947] all the fat [02459] that was upon the inwards [07130], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], and the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and their fat [02459], and Moses [04872] burned [06999] it upon the altar [04196].
10 But the fat [02459], and the kidneys [03629], and the caul [03508] above [04480] the liver [03516] of the sin offering [02403], he burnt [06999] upon the altar [04196]; as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] Moses [04872].
13 And thou shalt take [03947] all the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and the caul [03508] that is above the liver [03516], and the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, and burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196].
4 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is on them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] that is above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493]:
9 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493],
15 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
10 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
4 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is on them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
3 And he shall offer [07126] of the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offering [08002] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]; the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and all the fat [02459] that is upon the inwards [07130],
4 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is on them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
4 And he shall put [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the burnt offering [05930]; and it shall be accepted [07521] for him to make atonement [03722] for him.
5 And he shall kill [07819] the bullock [01121] [01241] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall bring [07126] the blood [01818], and sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196] that is by the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
1 And if his oblation [07133] be a sacrifice [02077] of peace offering [08002], if he offer [07126] it of the herd [01241]; whether it be a male [02145] or female [05347], he shall offer [07126] it without blemish [08549] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
2 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of his offering [07133], and kill [07819] it at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] the priests [03548] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196] round about [05439].
16 But if the sacrifice [02077] of his offering [07133] be a vow [05088], or a voluntary offering [05071], it shall be eaten [0398] the same day [03117] that he offereth [07126] his sacrifice [02077]: and on the morrow [04283] also the remainder [03498] of it shall be eaten [0398]:
12 If he offer [07126] it for a thanksgiving [08426], then he shall offer [07126] with the sacrifice [02077] of thanksgiving [08426] unleavened [04682] cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], and unleavened [04682] wafers [07550] anointed [04886] with oil [08081], and cakes [02471] mingled [01101] with oil [08081], of fine flour [05560], fried [07246].
25 And David [01732] built [01129] there an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002]. So the LORD [03068] was intreated [06279] for the land [0776], and the plague [04046] was stayed [06113] from Israel [03478].
9 And Saul [07586] said [0559], Bring hither [05066] a burnt offering [05930] to me, and peace offerings [08002]. And he offered [05927] the burnt offering [05930].
4 And it came to pass on the morrow [04283], that the people [05971] rose early [07925], and built [01129] there an altar [04196], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002].
26 Then all the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and all the people [05971], went up [05927], and came [0935] unto the house [01004] of God [0430] [01008], and wept [01058], and sat [03427] there before [06440] the LORD [03068], and fasted [06684] that day [03117] until even [06153], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
8 Only with thine eyes [05869] shalt thou behold [05027] and see [07200] the reward [08011] of the wicked [07563].
7 The days [03117] of visitation [06486] are come [0935], the days [03117] of recompence [07966] are come [0935]; Israel [03478] shall know [03045] it: the prophet [05030] is a fool [0191], the spiritual [07307] man [0376] is mad [07696], for the multitude [07230] of thine iniquity [05771], and the great [07227] hatred [04895].
35 To me belongeth vengeance [05359], and recompence [08005]; their foot [07272] shall slide [04131] in due time [06256]: for the day [03117] of their calamity [0343] is at hand [07138], and the things that shall come [06264] upon them make haste [02363].
22 Though ye offer [05927] me burnt offerings [05930] and your meat offerings [04503], I will not accept [07521] them: neither will I regard [05027] the peace offerings [08002] of your fat beasts [04806].
27 And he shall confirm [01396] the covenant [01285] with many [07227] for one [0259] week [07620]: and in the midst [02677] of the week [07620] he shall cause the sacrifice [02077] and the oblation [04503] to cease [07673], and for the overspreading [03671] of abominations [08251] he shall make it desolate [08074], even until the consummation [03617], and that determined [02782] shall be poured [05413] upon the desolate [08074].
21 And the LORD [03068] shall be known [03045] to Egypt [04714], and the Egyptians [04714] shall know [03045] the LORD [03068] in that day [03117], and shall do [05647] sacrifice [02077] and oblation [04503]; yea, they shall vow [05087] a vow [05088] unto the LORD [03068], and perform [07999] it.
7 Then said [0559] I, Lo, I come [0935]: in the volume [04039] of the book [05612] it is written [03789] of me,
29 Wherefore kick [01163] ye at my sacrifice [02077] and at mine offering [04503], which I have commanded [06680] in my habitation [04583]; and honourest [03513] thy sons [01121] above me, to make yourselves fat [01254] with the chiefest [07225] of all the offerings [04503] of Israel [03478] my people [05971]?
19 Moreover his mother [0517] made [06213] him a little [06996] coat [04598], and brought [05927] it to him from year [03117] to year [03117], when she came up [05927] with her husband [0376] to offer [02076] the yearly [03117] sacrifice [02077].
21 And the man [0376] Elkanah [0511], and all his house [01004], went up [05927] to offer [02076] unto the LORD [03068] the yearly [03117] sacrifice [02077], and his vow [05088].
17 And, thou son [01121] of man [0120], thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Speak [0559] unto every feathered [03671] fowl [06833], and to every beast [02416] of the field [07704], Assemble [06908] yourselves, and come [0935]; gather [0622] yourselves on every side [05439] to my sacrifice [02077] that I do sacrifice [02076] for you, even a great [01419] sacrifice [02077] upon the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478], that ye may eat [0398] flesh [01320], and drink [08354] blood [01818].
3 Ye eat [0398] the fat [02459], and ye clothe [03847] you with the wool [06785], ye kill [02076] them that are fed [01277]: but ye feed [07462] not the flock [06629].
24 And the woman [0802] had a fat [04770] calf [05695] in the house [01004]; and she hasted [04116], and killed [02076] it, and took [03947] flour [07058], and kneaded [03888] it, and did bake [0644] unleavened bread [04682] thereof:
3 What [0376] man [0376] soever there be of the house [01004] of Israel [03478], that killeth [07819] an ox [07794], or lamb [03775], or goat [05795], in the camp [04264], or that killeth [07819] it out [02351] of the camp [04264],
4 And bringeth [0935] it not unto the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150], to offer [07126] an offering [07133] unto the LORD [03068] before [06440] the tabernacle [04908] of the LORD [03068]; blood [01818] shall be imputed [02803] unto that man [0376]; he hath shed [08210] blood [01818]; and that man [0376] shall be cut off [03772] from among [07130] his people [05971]:
15 Notwithstanding thou mayest kill [02076] and eat [0398] flesh [01320] in all thy gates [08179], whatsoever thy soul [05315] lusteth after [0185], according to the blessing [01293] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] which he hath given [05414] thee: the unclean [02931] and the clean [02889] may eat [0398] thereof, as of the roebuck [06643], and as of the hart [0354].
15 And Solomon [08010] awoke [03364]; and, behold, it was a dream [02472]. And he came [0935] to Jerusalem [03389], and stood [05975] before [06440] the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068], and offered up [05927] burnt offerings [05930], and offered [06213] peace offerings [08002], and made [06213] a feast [04960] to all his servants [05650].
17 And they brought [0935] in the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], and set [03322] it in his place [04725], in the midst [08432] of the tabernacle [0168] that David [01732] had pitched [05186] for it: and David [01732] offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
18 And as soon as David [01732] had made an end [03615] of offering [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002], he blessed [01288] the people [05971] in the name [08034] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
31 As Moses [04872] the servant [05650] of the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] the children [01121] of Israel [03478], as it is written [03789] in the book [05612] of the law [08451] of Moses [04872], an altar [04196] of whole [08003] stones [068], over which no man hath lift up [05130] any iron [01270]: and they offered [05927] thereon burnt offerings [05930] unto the LORD [03068], and sacrificed [02076] peace offerings [08002].
7 And thou shalt offer [02076] peace offerings [08002], and shalt eat [0398] there, and rejoice [08055] before [06440] the LORD [03068] thy God [0430].
6 And they rose up early [07925] on the morrow [04283], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930], and brought [05066] peace offerings [08002]; and the people [05971] sat [03427] down to eat [0398] and to drink [08354], and rose up [06965] to play [06711].
24 An altar [04196] of earth [0127] thou shalt make [06213] unto me, and shalt sacrifice [02076] thereon thy burnt offerings [05930], and thy peace offerings [08002], thy sheep [06629], and thine oxen [01241]: in all places [04725] where I record [02142] my name [08034] I will come [0935] unto thee, and I will bless [01288] thee.
22 And Aaron [0175] lifted up [05375] his hand [03027] toward the people [05971], and blessed [01288] them, and came down [03381] from offering [06213] of the sin offering [02403], and the burnt offering [05930], and peace offerings [08002].
26 And they shall come [0935] from the cities [05892] of Judah [03063], and from the places about [05439] Jerusalem [03389], and from the land [0776] of Benjamin [01144], and from the plain [08219], and from the mountains [02022], and from the south [05045], bringing [0935] burnt offerings [05930], and sacrifices [02077], and meat offerings [04503], and incense [03828], and bringing [0935] sacrifices of praise [08426], unto the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
21 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], the God [0430] of Israel [03478]; Put [05595] your burnt offerings [05930] unto your sacrifices [02077], and eat [0398] flesh [01320].
20 To what purpose cometh [0935] there to me incense [03828] from Sheba [07614], and the sweet [02896] cane [07070] from a far [04801] country [0776]? your burnt offerings [05930] are not acceptable [07522], nor your sacrifices [02077] sweet [06149] unto me.
7 Even them will I bring [0935] to my holy [06944] mountain [02022], and make them joyful [08055] in my house [01004] of prayer [08605]: their burnt offerings [05930] and their sacrifices [02077] shall be accepted [07522] upon mine altar [04196]; for mine house [01004] shall be called [07121] an house [01004] of prayer [08605] for all people [05971].
24 And when they went in [0935] to offer [06213] sacrifices [02077] and burnt offerings [05930], Jehu [03058] appointed [07760] fourscore [08084] men [0376] without [02351], and said [0559], If any [0376] of the men [0582] whom I have brought [0935] into your hands [03027] escape [04422], he that letteth him go, his life [05315] shall be for the life [05315] of him.
17 And Naaman [05283] said [0559], Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given [05414] to thy servant [05650] two [06776] mules [06505]' burden [04853] of earth [0127]? for thy servant [05650] will henceforth offer [06213] neither burnt offering [05930] nor sacrifice [02077] unto other [0312] gods [0430], but unto the LORD [03068].
22 And Samuel [08050] said [0559], Hath the LORD [03068] as great delight [02656] in burnt offerings [05930] and sacrifices [02077], as in obeying [08085] the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068]? Behold, to obey [08085] is better [02896] than sacrifice [02077], and to hearken [07181] than the fat [02459] of rams [0352].
15 And the Levites [03881] took down [03381] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], and the coffer [0712] that was with it, wherein the jewels [03627] of gold [02091] were, and put [07760] them on the great [01419] stone [068]: and the men [0582] of Bethshemesh [01053] offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and sacrificed [02076] sacrifices [02077] the same day [03117] unto the LORD [03068].
27 But that it may be a witness [05707] between us, and you, and our generations [01755] after [0310] us, that we might do [05647] the service [05656] of the LORD [03068] before [06440] him with our burnt offerings [05930], and with our sacrifices [02077], and with our peace offerings [08002]; that your children [01121] may not say [0559] to our children [01121] in time to come [04279], Ye have no part [02506] in the LORD [03068].
27 And thou shalt offer [06213] thy burnt offerings [05930], the flesh [01320] and the blood [01818], upon the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430]: and the blood [01818] of thy sacrifices [02077] shall be poured out [08210] upon the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], and thou shalt eat [0398] the flesh [01320].
5 And the fourth [07243] part of an hin [01969] of wine [03196] for a drink offering [05262] shalt thou prepare [06213] with the burnt offering [05930] or sacrifice [02077], for one [0259] lamb [03532].
3 And will make [06213] an offering by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068], a burnt offering [05930], or a sacrifice [02077] in performing [06381] a vow [05088], or in a freewill offering [05071], or in your solemn feasts [04150], to make [06213] a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068], of the herd [01241], or of the flock [06629]:
12 And Jethro [03503], Moses [04872]' father in law [02859], took [03947] a burnt offering [05930] and sacrifices [02077] for God [0430]: and Aaron [0175] came [0935], and all the elders [02205] of Israel [03478], to eat [0398] bread [03899] with Moses [04872]' father in law [02859] before [06440] God [0430].
25 And Moses [04872] said [0559], Thou must give [05414] us [03027] also sacrifices [02077] and burnt offerings [05930], that we may sacrifice [06213] unto the LORD [03068] our God [0430].
8 And thou shalt say [0559] unto them, Whatsoever man [0376] there be of the house [01004] of Israel [03478], or of the strangers [01616] which sojourn [01481] among [08432] you, that offereth [05927] a burnt offering [05930] or sacrifice [02077],
37 These are the feasts [04150] of the LORD [03068], which ye shall proclaim [07121] to be holy [06944] convocations [04744], to offer [07126] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068], a burnt offering [05930], and a meat offering [04503], a sacrifice [02077], and drink offerings [05262], every thing [01697] upon his [03117] day [03117]:
16 But if the sacrifice [02077] of his offering [07133] be a vow [05088], or a voluntary offering [05071], it shall be eaten [0398] the same day [03117] that he offereth [07126] his sacrifice [02077]: and on the morrow [04283] also the remainder [03498] of it shall be eaten [0398]:
17 But the remainder [03498] of the flesh [01320] of the sacrifice [02077] on the third [07992] day [03117] shall be burnt [08313] with fire [0784].
18 And Melchizedek [04442] king [04428] of Salem [08004] brought forth [03318] bread [03899] and wine [03196]: and he was the priest [03548] of the most high [05945] God [0410].
