Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
shall put his hand upon the head--This was a significant act which implied not only that the offerer devoted the animal to God, but that he confessed his consciousness of sin and prayed that his guilt and its punishment might be transferred to the victim.
and it shall be--rather, "that it may be an acceptable atonement." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering - The usual ceremony. By it the sacrificer identified himself with his victim Lev 3:2, Lev 3:8; Lev 4:15; Lev 8:14; Rom 12:1.
To make atonement for him - This phrase belongs more especially to the sin-offerings and the trespass-offerings (compare Lev 4:20, Lev 4:26, Lev 4:31, Lev 4:35; Lev 5:16, Lev 5:18; Lev 6:7, etc.) It is not used in reference to the peace-offerings, and but rarely in reference to the burnt-offerings. It should be noticed that it is here introduced in close connection with the imposition of hands by the worshipper, not, as it is when it refers to the sin-offering, with the special functions of the priest, Lev 4:26, Lev 4:35; Ch2 29:23. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
put his hand upon
The laying of the offerer's hand signified acceptance and identification if himself with his offering. In type it answered to the believer's faith accepting and identifying himself with Christ (Rom 4:5); (Rom 6:3-11). The believer is justified by faith, and his faith is reckoned for righteousness, because his faith identifies him with Christ, who died as his sin-offering; (Co2 5:21); (Pe1 2:24).
atonement
(See Scofield) - (Exo 29:33). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
He shall put his hand - Both his hands, Lev 8:14, Lev 8:18, and Lev 16:21. Whereby he signified, that he willingly gave it to the Lord. That he judged himself worthy of that death which it suffered in his stead; and that he laid his sins upon it with an eye to him upon whom God would lay the iniquity of us all, Isa 53:6, and that together with it he did freely offer up himself to God. To make atonement - Sacramentally; as directing his faith and thoughts to that true propitiatory sacrifice which in time was to be offered up for him. And although burnt - offerings were commonly offered by way of thanksgiving; yet they were sometimes offered by way of atonement for sin, that is, for sins in general, as appears from Job 1:5, but for particular sins there were special sacrifices. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
He shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering - By the imposition of hands the person bringing the victim acknowledged,
1. The sacrifice as his own.
2. That he offered it as an atonement for his sins.
3. That he was worthy of death because he had sinned, having forfeited his life by breaking the law.
4. That he entreated God to accept the life of the innocent animal in place of his own.
5. And all this, to be done profitably, must have respect to Him whose life, in the fullness of time, should be made a sacrifice for sin.
6. The blood was to be sprinkled round about upon the altar, Lev 1:5, as by the sprinkling of blood the atonement was made; for the blood was the life of the beast, and it was always supposed that life went to redeem life.
See Clarke on Exo 29:10 (note). On the required perfection of the sacrifice see Clarke on Exo 12:5 (note). It has been sufficiently remarked by learned men that almost all the people of the earth had their burnt-offerings, on which also they placed the greatest dependence. It was a general maxim through the heathen world, that there was no other way to appease the incensed gods; and they sometimes even offered human sacrifices, from the supposition, as Caesar expresses it, that life was necessary to redeem life, and that the gods would be satisfied with nothing less. "Quod pro vita hominis nisi vita hominis redditur, non posse aliter deorum immortalium numen placari arbitrantur." - Com. de Bell. Gal., lib. vi. But this was not the case only with the Gauls, for we see, by Ovid, Fast., lib. vi., that it was a commonly received maxim among more polished people: -
" - Pro parvo victima parva cadit.
Cor pro corde, precor, pro fibris sumite fibras.
Hanc animam vobis pro meliore damus."

23 And they brought forth [05066] the he goats [08163] for the sin offering [02403] before [06440] the king [04428] and the congregation [06951]; and they laid [05564] their hands [03027] upon them:
35 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] of the lamb [03775] is taken away [05493] from the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196], according to the offerings made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for his sin [02403] that he hath committed [02398], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
26 And he shall burn [06999] all his fat [02459] upon the altar [04196], as the fat [02459] of the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him as concerning his sin [02403], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
7 And the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and it shall be forgiven [05545] him for any thing [0259] of all that he hath done [06213] in trespassing [0819] therein.
18 And he shall bring [0935] a ram [0352] without blemish [08549] out of the flock [06629], with thy estimation [06187], for a trespass offering [0817], unto the priest [03548]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him concerning his ignorance [07684] wherein he erred [07683] and wist [03045] it not, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
16 And he shall make amends [07999] for the harm [02398] that he hath done in the holy thing [06944], and shall add [03254] the fifth part [02549] thereto, and give [05414] it unto the priest [03548]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him with the ram [0352] of the trespass offering [0817], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
31 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] is taken away [05493] from off the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
20 And he shall do [06213] with the bullock [06499] as he did [06213] with the bullock [06499] for a sin offering [02403], so shall he do [06213] with this: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for them, and it shall be forgiven [05545] them.
1 I beseech [3870] you [5209] therefore [3767], brethren [80], by [1223] the mercies [3628] of God [2316], that ye present [3936] your [5216] bodies [4983] a living [2198] sacrifice [2378], holy [40], acceptable [2101] unto God [2316], which is your [5216] reasonable [3050] service [2999].
14 And he brought [05066] the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403]: and Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121] laid [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403].
15 And the elders [02205] of the congregation [05712] shall lay [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the bullock [06499] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the bullock [06499] shall be killed [07819] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
8 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of his offering [07133], and kill [07819] it before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] thereof round about [05439] upon the altar [04196].
2 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of his offering [07133], and kill [07819] it at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron's [0175] sons [01121] the priests [03548] shall sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] upon the altar [04196] round about [05439].
33 And they shall eat [0398] those things wherewith the atonement was made [03722], to consecrate [04390] [03027] and to sanctify [06942] them: but a stranger [02114] shall not eat [0398] thereof, because they are holy [06944].
24 Who [3739] his own self [846] bare [399] our [2257] sins [266] in [1722] his own [846] body [4983] on [1909] the tree [3586], that [2443] we [2198], being dead [581] to sins [266], should live [2198] unto righteousness [1343]: by [3739] whose [846] stripes [3468] ye were healed [2390].
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
3 [2228] Know ye not [50], that so [3754] many of us [3745] as were baptized [907] into [1519] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] were baptized [907] into [1519] his [846] death [2288]?
4 Therefore [3767] we are buried with [4916] him [846] by [1223] baptism [908] into [1519] death [2288]: that [2443] like as [5618] Christ [5547] was raised up [1453] from [1537] the dead [3498] by [1223] the glory [1391] of the Father [3962], even so [3779] we [2249] also [2532] should walk [4043] in [1722] newness [2538] of life [2222].
5 For [1063] if [1487] we have been [1096] planted together [4854] in the likeness [3667] of his [846] death [2288], we shall be [2071] also [235] [2532] in the likeness of his resurrection [386]:
6 Knowing [1097] this [5124], that [3754] our [2257] old [3820] man [444] is crucified with [4957] him, that [2443] the body [4983] of sin [266] might be destroyed [2673], that henceforth [3371] we [2248] should [1398] not [3371] serve [1398] sin [266].
7 For [1063] he that is dead [599] is freed [1344] from [575] sin [266].
8 Now [1161] if [1487] we be dead [599] with [4862] Christ [5547], we believe [4100] that [3754] we shall [4800] also [2532] live [4800] with him [846]:
9 Knowing [1492] that [3754] Christ [5547] being raised [1453] from [1537] the dead [3498] dieth [599] no more [3765]; death [2288] hath [2961] no more [3765] dominion over [2961] him [846].
10 For [3739] [1063] in that he died [599], he died [599] unto sin [266] once [2178]: but [1161] in that [3739] he liveth [2198], he liveth [2198] unto God [2316].
11 Likewise [3779] reckon [3049] ye [5210] also [2532] yourselves [1438] to be [1511] dead [3498] indeed [3303] unto sin [266], but [1161] alive [2198] unto God [2316] through [1722] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] our [2257] Lord [2962].
5 But [1161] to him that worketh [2038] not [3361], but [1161] believeth [4100] on [1909] him that justifieth [1344] the ungodly [765], his [846] faith [4102] is counted [3049] for [1519] righteousness [1343].
5 And it was so, when the days [03117] of their feasting [04960] were gone about [05362], that Job [0347] sent [07971] and sanctified [06942] them, and rose up early [07925] in the morning [01242], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] according to the number [04557] of them all: for Job [0347] said [0559], It may be [0194] that my sons [01121] have sinned [02398], and cursed [01288] God [0430] in their hearts [03824]. Thus did [06213] Job [0347] continually [03117].
6 All we like sheep [06629] have gone astray [08582]; we have turned [06437] every one [0376] to his own way [01870]; and the LORD [03068] hath laid [06293] on him the iniquity [05771] of us all.
21 And Aaron [0175] shall lay [05564] both [08147] his hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the live [02416] goat [08163], and confess [03034] over him all the iniquities [05771] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and all their transgressions [06588] in all their sins [02403], putting [05414] them upon the head [07218] of the goat [08163], and shall send him away [07971] by the hand [03027] of a fit [06261] man [0376] into the wilderness [04057]:
18 And he brought [07126] the ram [0352] for the burnt offering [05930]: and Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121] laid [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the ram [0352].
14 And he brought [05066] the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403]: and Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121] laid [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403].
5 Your lamb [07716] shall be without blemish [08549], a male [02145] of the first [01121] year [08141]: ye shall take [03947] it out from the sheep [03532], or from the goats [05795]:
10 And thou shalt cause a bullock [06499] to be brought [07126] before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]: and Aaron [0175] and his sons [01121] shall put [05564] their hands [03027] upon the head [07218] of the bullock [06499].
5 And he shall kill [07819] the bullock [01121] [01241] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall bring [07126] the blood [01818], and sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196] that is by the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
