A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
After this temporary diversion, caused by Pharaoh in favor of Jerusalem, the Egyptians returned no more to its help (Kg2 24:7). Judea had the misfortune to lie between the two great contending powers, Babylon and Egypt, and so was exposed to the alternate inroads of the one or the other. Josiah, taking side with Assyria, fell in battle with Pharaoh-necho at Megiddo (Kg2 23:29). Zedekiah, seeking the Egyptian alliance in violation of his oath, was now about to be taken by Nebuchadnezzar (Ch2 36:13; Eze 17:15, Eze 17:17). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Then - And. Pharaoh-Hophra Jer 44:30, the Apries of Herodotus, probably withdrew without giving Nebuchadnezzar battle. After a reign of 25 years, he was dethroned by Amasis, but allowed to inhabit his palace at Sais, where finally he was strangled. |

Then Pharaoh's army - This was Pharaoh-hophra or Apries, who then reigned in Egypt in place of his father Necho. See Eze 29:6, etc. Nebuchadnezzar, hearing that the Egyptian army, on which the Jews so much depended, was on their march to relieve the city, suddenly raised the siege, and went to meet them. In the interim Zedekiah sent to Jeremiah to inquire of the Lord to know whether they might consider themselves in safety. |
17 Neither shall Pharaoh [06547] with his mighty [01419] army [02428] and great [07227] company [06951] make [06213] for him in the war [04421], by casting up [08210] mounts [05550], and building [01129] forts [01785], to cut off [03772] many [07227] persons [05315]:
15 But he rebelled [04775] against him in sending [07971] his ambassadors [04397] into Egypt [04714], that they might give [05414] him horses [05483] and much [07227] people [05971]. Shall he prosper [06743]? shall he escape [04422] that doeth [06213] such things? or shall he break [06565] the covenant [01285], and be delivered [04422]?
13 And he also rebelled [04775] against king [04428] Nebuchadnezzar [05019], who had made him swear [07650] by God [0430]: but he stiffened [07185] his neck [06203], and hardened [0553] his heart [03824] from turning [07725] unto the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478].
29 In his days [03117] Pharaohnechoh [06549] king [04428] of Egypt [04714] went up [05927] against the king [04428] of Assyria [0804] to the river [05104] Euphrates [06578]: and king [04428] Josiah [02977] went [03212] against [07125] him; and he slew [04191] him at Megiddo [04023], when he had seen [07200] him.
7 And the king [04428] of Egypt [04714] came [03318] not again [03254] any more out of his land [0776]: for the king [04428] of Babylon [0894] had taken [03947] from the river [05158] of Egypt [04714] unto the river [05104] Euphrates [06578] all that pertained to the king [04428] of Egypt [04714].
30 Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068]; Behold, I will give [05414] Pharaohhophra [06548] king [04428] of Egypt [04714] into the hand [03027] of his enemies [0341], and into the hand [03027] of them that seek [01245] his life [05315]; as I gave [05414] Zedekiah [06667] king [04428] of Judah [03063] into the hand [03027] of Nebuchadrezzar [05019] king [04428] of Babylon [0894], his enemy [0341], and that sought [01245] his life [05315].
6 And all the inhabitants [03427] of Egypt [04714] shall know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], because they have been a staff [04938] of reed [07070] to the house [01004] of Israel [03478].
