man . . . precious--I will so cut off Babylon's defenders, that a single man shall be as rare and precious as the finest gold. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
I will make a man ... - I will so cut off and destroy the men of Babylon, that a single man to defend the city will be more rare and valuable than fine gold. The expression indicates that there would be a great slaughter of the people of Babylon.
Than fine gold - Pure, unalloyed gold. The word used here (פז pâz) is often distinguished from common gold Psa 19:11; Psa 119:127; Pro 8:19.
Than the golden wedge of Ophir - The word (כתם kethem) rendered 'wedge' means properly "gold;" yellow gold; what is hidden, precious, or hoarded; and is used only in poetry. It indicates nothing about the shape of the gold, as the word, wedge would seem to suppose. 'Ophir was a country to which the vessels of Solomon traded, and which was particularly distinguished for producing gold; but respecting its particular situation, there has been much discussion. The 'ships of Tarshish' sailed from Ezion-geber on the Red Sea, and went to Ophir Kg1 9:26; Kg1 10:22; Kg1 22:48. Three years were required for the voyage; and they returned freighted with gold, peacocks, apes, spices, ivory, and ebony (Kg1 9:28; Kg1 10:11-12; compare Ch2 8:18). The gold of that country was more celebrated than that of any other country for its purity. Josephus supposes that it was in the East Indies; Bruce that it was in South Africa; Rosenmuller and others suppose that it was in Southern Arabia. It is probable that the situation of Ophir must ever remain a matter of conjecture. The Chaldee Paraphrase gives a different sense to this passage. 'I will love those who fear me, more than gold in which people glory; and those who observe the law more than the tried gold of Ophir.' (On the situation of Ophir the following works may be consulted: The "Pictorial Bible," vol. ii. pp. 364-369; Martini Lipenii, "Dissert. de Ophir;" Joan. Christophori Wichmanshausen "Dissert. de Navig. Ophritica:" H. Relandi, "Dissert. de Ophir;" Ugolini, "Thes. Sac. Ant." vol. viii.; and Forster "On Arabia.") |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
More precious - The city and nation shall be so depopulated. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
I will make a man more precious than fine gold-wedge of Ophir - The Medes and Persians will not be satisfied with the spoils of the Babylonians. They seek either to destroy or enslave them; and they will accept no ransom for any man - either for אנוש enosh, the poor man, or for אדם adam, the more honorable person. All must fall by the sword, or go into captivity together; for the Medes, (Isa 13:17), regard not silver, and delight not in gold. |
18 And Huram [02361] sent [07971] him by the hands [03027] of his servants [05650] ships [0591] [0591], and servants [05650] that had knowledge [03045] of the sea [03220]; and they went [0935] with the servants [05650] of Solomon [08010] to Ophir [0211], and took [03947] thence four [0702] hundred [03967] and fifty [02572] talents [03603] of gold [02091], and brought [0935] them to king [04428] Solomon [08010].
11 And the navy [0590] also of Hiram [02438], that brought [05375] gold [02091] from Ophir [0211], brought in [0935] from Ophir [0211] great [03966] plenty [07235] of almug [0484] trees [06086], and precious [03368] stones [068].
12 And the king [04428] made [06213] of the almug [0484] trees [06086] pillars [04552] for the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and for the king's [04428] house [01004], harps [03658] also and psalteries [05035] for singers [07891]: there came [0935] no such almug [0484] trees [06086], nor were seen [07200] unto this day [03117].
28 And they came [0935] to Ophir [0211], and fetched [03947] from thence gold [02091], four [0702] hundred [03967] and twenty [06242] talents [03603], and brought [0935] it to king [04428] Solomon [08010].
48 Jehoshaphat [03092] made [06213] [06240] ships [0591] of Tharshish [08659] to go [03212] to Ophir [0211] for gold [02091]: but they went [01980] not; for the ships [0591] were broken [07665] at Eziongeber [06100].
22 For the king [04428] had at sea [03220] a navy [0590] of Tharshish [08659] with the navy [0590] of Hiram [02438]: once [0259] in three [07969] years [08141] came [0935] the navy [0590] of Tharshish [08659], bringing [05375] gold [02091], and silver [03701], ivory [08143], and apes [06971], and peacocks [08500].
26 And king [04428] Solomon [08010] made [06213] a navy of ships [0590] in Eziongeber [06100], which is beside Eloth [0359], on the shore [08193] of the Red [05488] sea [03220], in the land [0776] of Edom [0123].
19 My fruit [06529] is better [02896] than gold [02742], yea, than fine gold [06337]; and my revenue [08393] than choice [0977] silver [03701].
127 Therefore I love [0157] thy commandments [04687] above gold [02091]; yea, above fine gold [06337].
11 Moreover by them is thy servant [05650] warned [02094]: and in keeping [08104] of them there is great [07227] reward [06118].
17 Behold, I will stir up [05782] the Medes [04074] against them, which shall not regard [02803] silver [03701]; and as for gold [02091], they shall not delight [02654] in it.
