A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
oak--Ye shall be like the "oaks," the object of your "desire" (Isa 1:29). People become like the gods they worship; they never rise above their level (Psa 135:18). So men's sins become their own scourges (Jer 2:9). The leaf of the idol oak fades by a law of necessary consequence, having no living sap or "water" from God. So "garden" answers to "gardens" (Isa 1:29).

29 For they shall be ashamed [0954] of the oaks [0352] which ye have desired [02530], and ye shall be confounded [02659] for the gardens [01593] that ye have chosen [0977].
9 Wherefore I will yet plead [07378] with you, saith [05002] the LORD [03068], and with your children's [01121] children [01121] will I plead [07378].
18 They that make [06213] them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth [0982] in them.
29 For they shall be ashamed [0954] of the oaks [0352] which ye have desired [02530], and ye shall be confounded [02659] for the gardens [01593] that ye have chosen [0977].
6 I made [06213] me pools [01295] of water [04325], to water [08248] therewith the wood [03293] that bringeth forth [06779] trees [06086]:
1 I said [0559] in mine heart [03820], Go to now [03212], I will prove [05254] thee with mirth [08057], therefore enjoy [07200] pleasure [02896]: and, behold, this also is vanity [01892].
1 The king's [04428] heart [03820] is in the hand [03027] of the LORD [03068], as the rivers [06388] of water [04325]: he turneth [05186] it whithersoever he will [02654].
10 And Lot [03876] lifted up [05375] his eyes [05869], and beheld [07200] all the plain [03603] of Jordan [03383], that it was well watered [04945] every where, before [06440] the LORD [03068] destroyed [07843] Sodom [05467] and Gomorrah [06017], even as the garden [01588] of the LORD [03068], like the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], as thou comest [0935] unto Zoar [06820].
10 And a river [05104] went out [03318] of Eden [05731] to water [08248] the garden [01588]; and from thence it was parted [06504], and became into four [0702] heads [07218].
