truth--or, "faithfulness" (Psa 25:5), manifest it by fulfilling promises. Light and truth are personified as messengers who will bring him to the privileged place of worship.

Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
O send out thy light and thy truth - Send them forth as from thy presence; or, let them be made manifest. The word light here is equivalent to favor or mercy, as when one prays for the "light of God's countenance" (see the notes at Psa 4:6); and the idea is, that now, in the time of darkness and trouble, when the light of God's countenance seemed to be withdrawn or hidden, he prays that God would impart light; that he would restore his favor; that he would conduct him back again to his former privileges. The word truth here is equivalent to truthfulness or faithfulness; and the prayer is, that God would manifest his faithfulness to him as one of his own people, by restoring him to the privileges and blessings from which he had been unjustly driven. Compare the notesat Psa 25:5.
Let them lead me - That is, Let them lead me back to my accustomed privileges; let me go under their guidance to the enjoyment of the blessings connected with the place of public worship.
Let them bring me unto thy holy hill - Mount Zion; the place where the worship of God was then celebrated, and hence called the "holy hill" of God.
And to thy tabernacles - The tabernacle was the sacred tent erected for the worship of God (see the notes at Psa 15:1), and was regarded as the place where Yahweh had his abode. The tabernacle was divided, as the temple was afterward, into two parts or rooms, the holy and the most holy place (see the notes at Heb 9:1-5); and hence the plural term, tabernacles, might be employed in speaking of it. The language here implies, as in Psa 42:1-11, that the author of the psalm was now exiled or banished from this, and hence, also it may be inferred that the two psalms were composed by the same author, and with reference to the same occasion. If the reference here, moreover, is to Mount Zion as the "holy hill," it may be observed that this would fix the composition of the psalm to the time of David, as before his time that was not the place of the worship of God, but was made "holy" by his removing the ark there. After his time the place of worship was removed to Mount Moriah, where the temple was built. It cannot be demonstrated, however, with absolute certainty that the reference here is to Mount Zion, though that seems in every way probable. Compare Psa 2:6, note; Psa 3:4, note; compare Sa2 5:7-9; Sa2 6:17. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Send out - That is, actually discover them. Truth - Thy favour, or the light of thy countenance, and the truth of thy promises made to me; or the true - light, the illumination of thy spirit, and the direction of thy gracious providence, whereby I may be led in the right way, to thy holy hill. Hill - Of Zion, the place of God's presence and worship. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
O send out thy light and thy truth - We are in darkness and distress, O send light and prosperity; we look for the fulfillment of thy promises, O send forth thy truth. Let thy fight guide me to thy holy hill, to the country of my fathers; let thy truth lead me to thy tabernacles, there to worship thee in spirit and in truth. |
5 Lead [01869] me in thy truth [0571], and teach [03925] me: for thou art the God [0430] of my salvation [03468]; on thee do I wait [06960] all the day [03117].
1 A Psalm of David [01732]. The LORD [03068] is my light [0216] and my salvation [03468]; whom shall I fear [03372]? the LORD [03068] is the strength [04581] of my life [02416]; of whom shall I be afraid [06342]?
17 And they brought [0935] in the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068], and set [03322] it in his place [04725], in the midst [08432] of the tabernacle [0168] that David [01732] had pitched [05186] for it: and David [01732] offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
7 Nevertheless David [01732] took [03920] the strong hold [04686] of Zion [06726]: the same is the city [05892] of David [01732].
8 And David [01732] said [0559] on that day [03117], Whosoever getteth up [05060] to the gutter [06794], and smiteth [05221] the Jebusites [02983], and the lame [06455] and the blind [05787], that are hated [08130] of David's [01732] soul [05315], he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said [0559], The blind [05787] and the lame [06455] shall not come [0935] into the house [01004].
9 So David [01732] dwelt [03427] in the fort [04686], and called [07121] it the city [05892] of David [01732]. And David [01732] built [01129] round about [05439] from Millo [04407] and inward [01004].
4 I cried [07121] unto the LORD [03068] with my voice [06963], and he heard [06030] me out of his holy [06944] hill [02022]. Selah [05542].
6 Yet have I set [05258] my king [04428] upon my holy [06944] hill [02022] of Zion [06726].
1 To the chief Musician [05329], Maschil [04905], for the sons [01121] of Korah [07141]. As the hart [0354] panteth [06165] after the water [04325] brooks [0650], so panteth [06165] my soul [05315] after thee, O God [0430].
2 My soul [05315] thirsteth [06770] for God [0430], for the living [02416] God [0410]: when shall I come [0935] and appear [07200] before [06440] God [0430]?
3 My tears [01832] have been my meat [03899] day [03119] and night [03915], while they continually [03117] say [0559] unto me, Where is thy God [0430]?
4 When I remember [02142] these things, I pour out [08210] my soul [05315] in me: for I had gone [05674] with the multitude [05519], I went [01718] with them to the house [01004] of God [0430], with the voice [06963] of joy [07440] and praise [08426], with a multitude [01995] that kept holyday [02287].
5 Why art thou cast down [07817], O my soul [05315]? and why art thou disquieted [01993] in me? hope [03176] thou in God [0430]: for I shall yet praise [03034] him for the help [03444] of his countenance [06440].
6 O my God [0430], my soul [05315] is cast down [07817] within me: therefore will I remember [02142] thee from the land [0776] of Jordan [03383], and of the Hermonites [02769], from the hill [02022] Mizar [04706].
7 Deep [08415] calleth [07121] unto deep [08415] at the noise [06963] of thy waterspouts [06794]: all thy waves [04867] and thy billows [01530] are gone [05674] over me.
8 Yet the LORD [03068] will command [06680] his lovingkindness [02617] in the daytime [03119], and in the night [03915] his song [07892] shall be with me, and my prayer [08605] unto the God [0410] of my life [02416].
9 I will say [0559] unto God [0410] my rock [05553], Why hast thou forgotten [07911] me? why go [03212] I mourning [06937] because of the oppression [03906] of the enemy [0341]?
10 As with a sword [07524] in my bones [06106], mine enemies [06887] reproach [02778] me; while they say [0559] daily [03117] unto me, Where is thy God [0430]?
11 Why art thou cast down [07817], O my soul [05315]? and why art thou disquieted [01993] within me? hope [03176] thou in God [0430]: for I shall yet praise [03034] him, who is the health [03444] of my countenance [06440], and my God [0430].
1 Then [3767] verily [3303] the first [4413] covenant had [2192] also [2532] ordinances [1345] of divine service [2999], and [5037] a worldly [2886] sanctuary [39].
2 For [1063] there was [2680] a tabernacle [4633] made [2680]; the first [4413], wherein [1722] [3739] [5037] was the candlestick [3087], and [2532] the table [5132], and [2532] the shewbread [4286] [740]; which [3748] is called [3004] the sanctuary [39].
3 And [1161] after [3326] the second [1208] veil [2665], the tabernacle [4633] which [3588] is called [3004] the Holiest of all [39] [39];
4 Which had [2192] the golden [5552] censer [2369], and [2532] the ark [2787] of the covenant [1242] overlaid [4028] round about [3840] with gold [5553], wherein [1722] [3739] was the golden [5552] pot [4713] that had [2192] manna [3131], and [2532] Aaron's [2] rod [4464] that budded [985], and [2532] the tables [4109] of the covenant [1242];
5 And [1161] over [5231] it [846] the cherubims [5502] of glory [1391] shadowing [2683] the mercyseat [2435]; of [4012] which [3739] we cannot [3756] [2076] now [3568] speak [3004] particularly [2596] [3313].
1 A Psalm [04210] of David [01732]. LORD [03068], who shall abide [01481] in thy tabernacle [0168]? who shall dwell [07931] in thy holy [06944] hill [02022]?
5 Lead [01869] me in thy truth [0571], and teach [03925] me: for thou art the God [0430] of my salvation [03468]; on thee do I wait [06960] all the day [03117].
6 There be many [07227] that say [0559], Who will shew [07200] us any good [02896]? LORD [03068], lift thou up [05375] the light [0216] of thy countenance [06440] upon us.
