A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Their sufferings were for their rebellion against (Psa 105:28) the words, or purposes, or promises, of God for their benefit. When humbled they cry to God, who delivers them from bondage, described as a dark dungeon with doors and bars of metal, in which they are bound in iron--that is, chains and fetters.

shadow of death--darkness with danger (Psa 23:4).

4 Yea, though I walk [03212] through the valley [01516] of the shadow of death [06757], I will fear [03372] no evil [07451]: for thou art with me; thy rod [07626] and thy staff [04938] they comfort [05162] me.
28 He sent [07971] darkness [02822], and made it dark [02821]; and they rebelled [04784] not against his word [01697].
18 Whose feet [07272] they hurt [06031] with fetters [03525]: he [05315] was laid [0935] in iron [01270]:
2 The people [05971] that walked [01980] in darkness [02822] have seen [07200] a great [01419] light [0216]: they that dwell [03427] in the land [0776] of the shadow of death [06757], upon them hath the light [0216] shined [05050].
19 Though thou hast sore broken [01794] us in the place [04725] of dragons [08577], and covered [03680] us with the shadow of death [06757].
4 Yea, though I walk [03212] through the valley [01516] of the shadow of death [06757], I will fear [03372] no evil [07451]: for thou art with me; thy rod [07626] and thy staff [04938] they comfort [05162] me.
21 Before I go [03212] whence I shall not return [07725], even to the land [0776] of darkness [02822] and the shadow of death [06757];
5 Let darkness [02822] and the shadow of death [06757] stain [01350] it; let a cloud [06053] dwell [07931] upon it; let the blackness [03650] of the day [03117] terrify [01204] it.
2 The people [05971] that walked [01980] in darkness [02822] have seen [07200] a great [01419] light [0216]: they that dwell [03427] in the land [0776] of the shadow of death [06757], upon them hath the light [0216] shined [05050].
79 To give light [2014] to them that sit [2521] in [1722] darkness [4655] and [2532] in the shadow [4639] of death [2288], to guide [2720] our [2257] feet [4228] into [1519] the way [3598] of peace [1515].
10 Such as sit [03427] in darkness [02822] and in the shadow of death [06757], being bound [0615] in affliction [06040] and iron [01270];
11 Because they rebelled [04784] against the words [0561] of God [0410], and contemned [05006] the counsel [06098] of the most High [05945]:
12 Therefore he brought down [03665] their heart [03820] with labour [05999]; they fell down [03782], and there was none to help [05826].
13 Then they cried [02199] unto the LORD [03068] in their trouble [06862], and he saved [03467] them out of their distresses [04691].
14 He brought them out [03318] of darkness [02822] and the shadow of death [06757], and brake [05423] their bands [04147] in sunder [05423].
22 But this is a people [05971] robbed [0962] and spoiled [08154]; they are all of them snared [06351] in holes [02352] [0970], and they are hid [02244] in prison [03608] houses [01004]: they are for a prey [0957], and none delivereth [05337]; for a spoil [04933], and none saith [0559], Restore [07725].
7 To open [06491] the blind [05787] eyes [05869], to bring out [03318] the prisoners [0616] from the prison [04525], and them that sit [03427] in darkness [02822] out of the prison [03608] house [01004].
2 I will go [03212] before [06440] thee, and make [03474] the crooked places [01921] straight [03474] [03474]: I will break in pieces [07665] the gates [01817] of brass [05154], and cut in sunder [01438] the bars [01280] of iron [01270]:
16 For he hath broken [07665] the gates [01817] of brass [05178], and cut [01438] the bars [01280] of iron [01270] in sunder [01438].
14 He brought them out [03318] of darkness [02822] and the shadow of death [06757], and brake [05423] their bands [04147] in sunder [05423].
30 But if the LORD [03068] make [01254] a new thing [01278], and the earth [0127] open [06475] her mouth [06310], and swallow them up [01104], with all that appertain unto them, and they go down [03381] quick [02416] into the pit [07585]; then ye shall understand [03045] that these men [0582] have provoked [05006] the LORD [03068].
23 Surely they shall not [0518] see [07200] the land [0776] which I sware [07650] unto their fathers [01], neither shall any of them that provoked [05006] me see [07200] it:
11 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], How long will this people [05971] provoke [05006] me? and how long will it be ere [03808] they believe [0539] me, for all the signs [0226] which I have shewed [06213] among [07130] them?
20 For when I shall have brought [0935] them into the land [0127] which I sware [07650] unto their fathers [01], that floweth [02100] with milk [02461] and honey [01706]; and they shall have eaten [0398] and filled [07646] themselves, and waxen fat [01878]; then will they turn [06437] unto other [0312] gods [0430], and serve [05647] them, and provoke [05006] me, and break [06565] my covenant [01285].
19 And when the LORD [03068] saw [07200] it, he abhorred [05006] them, because of the provoking [03708] of his sons [01121], and of his daughters [01323].
8 For Jerusalem [03389] is ruined [03782], and Judah [03063] is fallen [05307]: because their tongue [03956] and their doings [04611] are against the LORD [03068], to provoke [04784] the eyes [05869] of his glory [03519].
12 Therefore he brought down [03665] their heart [03820] with labour [05999]; they fell down [03782], and there was none to help [05826].
19 That say [0559], Let him make speed [04116], and hasten [02363] his work [04639], that we may see [07200] it: and let the counsel [06098] of the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478] draw nigh [07126] and come [0935], that we may know [03045] it!
11 Because they rebelled [04784] against the words [0561] of God [0410], and contemned [05006] the counsel [06098] of the most High [05945]:
18 Whose feet [07272] they hurt [06031] with fetters [03525]: he [05315] was laid [0935] in iron [01270]:
18 Whose feet [07272] they hurt [06031] with fetters [03525]: he [05315] was laid [0935] in iron [01270]:
8 And if they be bound [0631] in fetters [02131], and be holden [03920] in cords [02256] of affliction [06040];
11 And many [07227] nations [01471] shall be joined [03867] to the LORD [03068] in that day [03117], and shall be my people [05971]: and I will dwell [07931] in the midst [08432] of thee, and thou shalt know [03045] that the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] hath sent [07971] me unto thee.
20 And Adah [05711] bare [03205] Jabal [02989]: he was the father [01] of such as dwell [03427] in tents [0168], and of such as have cattle [04735].
7 Deep [08415] calleth [07121] unto deep [08415] at the noise [06963] of thy waterspouts [06794]: all thy waves [04867] and thy billows [01530] are gone [05674] over me.
1 Nevertheless the dimness [04155] shall not be such as was in her vexation [04164], when [06256] at the first [07223] he lightly afflicted [07043] the land [0776] of Zebulun [02074] and the land [0776] of Naphtali [05321], and afterward [0314] did more grievously afflict [03513] her by the way [01870] of the sea [03220], beyond [05676] Jordan [03383], in Galilee [01551] of the nations [01471].
4 Yea, though I walk [03212] through the valley [01516] of the shadow of death [06757], I will fear [03372] no evil [07451]: for thou art with me; thy rod [07626] and thy staff [04938] they comfort [05162] me.
15 Oh that men would praise [03034] the LORD [03068] for his goodness [02617], and for his wonderful works [06381] to the children [01121] of men [0120]!
