A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
my sighing cometh before I eat--that is, prevents my eating [UMBREIT]; or, conscious that the effort to eat brought on the disease, Job must sigh before eating [ROSENMULLER]; or, sighing takes the place of good (Psa 42:3) [GOOD]. But the first explanation accords best with the text.

my roarings are poured out like the waters--an image from the rushing sound of water streaming.

3 My tears [01832] have been my meat [03899] day [03119] and night [03915], while they continually [03117] say [0559] unto me, Where is thy God [0430]?
3 My tears [01832] have been my meat [03899] day [03119] and night [03915], while they continually [03117] say [0559] unto me, Where is thy God [0430]?
14 Yet his meat [03899] in his bowels [04578] is turned [02015], it is the gall [04846] of asps [06620] within [07130] him.
15 He hath swallowed down [01104] riches [02428], and he shall vomit them up again [06958]: God [0410] shall cast them out [03423] of his belly [0990].
16 He shall suck [03243] the poison [07219] of asps [06620]: the viper's [0660] tongue [03956] shall slay [02026] him.
17 He shall not see [07200] the rivers [06390], the floods [05104], the brooks [05158] of honey [01706] and butter [02529].
18 That which he laboured [03022] for shall he restore [07725], and shall not swallow it down [01104]: according to his substance [02428] shall the restitution [08545] be, and he shall not rejoice [05965] therein.
20 Wherefore is light [0216] given [05414] to him that is in misery [06001], and life [02416] unto the bitter [04751] in soul [05315];
23 Why is light given to a man [01397] whose way [01870] is hid [05641], and whom God [0433] hath hedged in [05526]?
1 I am the man [01397] that hath seen [07200] affliction [06040] by the rod [07626] of his wrath [05678].
2 He hath led [05090] me, and brought [03212] me into darkness [02822], but not into light [0216].
3 Surely against me is he turned [07725]; he turneth [02015] his hand [03027] against me all the day [03117].
4 My flesh [01320] and my skin [05785] hath he made old [01086]; he hath broken [07665] my bones [06106].
5 He hath builded against [01129] me, and compassed [05362] me with gall [07219] and travail [08513].
6 He hath set [03427] me in dark places [04285], as they that be dead [04191] of old [05769].
7 He hath hedged [01443] me about, that I cannot get out [03318]: he hath made my chain [05178] heavy [03513].
8 Also when I cry [02199] and shout [07768], he shutteth out [05640] my prayer [08605].
9 He hath inclosed [01443] my ways [01870] with hewn stone [01496], he hath made my paths [05410] crooked [05753].
10 He was unto me as a bear [01677] lying in wait [0693], and as a lion [0738] in secret places [04565].
11 He hath turned aside [05493] my ways [01870], and pulled me in pieces [06582]: he hath made [07760] me desolate [08074].
12 He hath bent [01869] his bow [07198], and set [05324] me as a mark [04307] for the arrow [02671].
13 He hath caused the arrows [01121] of his quiver [0827] to enter [0935] into my reins [03629].
27 Why sayest [0559] thou, O Jacob [03290], and speakest [01696], O Israel [03478], My way [01870] is hid [05641] from the LORD [03068], and my judgment [04941] is passed over [05674] from my God [0430]?
16 Above [1909] all [3956], taking [353] the shield [2375] of faith [4102], wherewith [1722] [3739] ye shall be able [1410] to quench [4570] all [3956] the fiery [4448] darts [956] of the wicked [4190].
31 And [1161] the Lord [2962] said [2036], Simon [4613], Simon [4613], behold [2400], Satan [4567] hath desired [1809] to have you [5209], that he may sift [4617] you as [5613] wheat [4621]:
24 [3303] The Son [5207] of man [444] goeth [5217] as [2531] it is written [1125] of [4012] him [846]: but [1161] woe [3759] unto that [1565] man [444] by [1223] whom [3739] the Son [5207] of man [444] is betrayed [3860] ! it had been [2258] good [2570] for that [1565] man [846] if [1487] he [444] had [1080] not [3756] been born [1080].
10 But he said [0559] unto her, Thou speakest [01696] as one [0259] of the foolish women [05036] speaketh [01696]. What [01571]? shall we receive [06901] good [02896] at the hand of God [0430], and shall we not receive [06901] evil [07451]? In all this did not Job [0347] sin [02398] with his lips [08193].
26 I was not in safety [07951], neither had I rest [08252], neither was I quiet [05117]; yet trouble [07267] came [0935].
16 Count [05414] not thine handmaid [0519] for [06440] a daughter [01323] of Belial [01100]: for out of the abundance [07230] of my complaint [07879] and grief [03708] have I spoken [01696] hitherto.
19 How much less [0637] in them that dwell [07931] in houses [01004] of clay [02563], whose foundation [03247] is in the dust [06083], which are crushed [01792] before [06440] the moth [06211]?
3 My tears [01832] have been my meat [03899] day [03119] and night [03915], while they continually [03117] say [0559] unto me, Where is thy God [0430]?
