Asahel--This officer having been slain at the very beginning of David's reign [Sa2 2:23], his name was probably given to this division in honor of his memory, and his son was invested with the command. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Asahel died before the courses, as here described, could have been instituted. Perhaps the arrangements of David in his later years were based upon institutions belonging to the period of his reign at Hebron. |

Asahel the brother of Joab - This verse proves that the division and arrangement mentioned above were made before David was acknowledged king in Hebron; for Asahel, the brother of Joab, who was fourth captain, was slain by Abner, while Ishbosheth reigned over Israel at Mahanaim, Sa2 2:19-23. |
23 Howbeit he refused [03985] to turn aside [05493]: wherefore Abner [074] with the hinder end [0310] of the spear [02595] smote [05221] him under [0413] the fifth [02570] rib, that the spear [02595] came out [03318] behind [0310] him; and he fell down [05307] there, and died [04191] in the same place [08478]: and it came to pass, that as many as came [0935] to the place [04725] where Asahel [06214] fell down [05307] and died [04191] stood still [05975].
19 And Asahel [06214] pursued [07291] after [0310] Abner [074]; and in going [03212] he turned [05186] not to the right hand [03225] nor to the left [08040] from following [0310] Abner [074].
20 Then Abner [074] looked [06437] behind [0310] him, and said [0559], Art thou Asahel [06214]? And he answered [0559], I am.
21 And Abner [074] said [0559] to him, Turn thee aside [05186] to thy right hand [03225] or to thy left [08040], and lay thee hold [0270] on one [0259] of the young men [05288], and take [03947] thee his armour [02488]. But Asahel [06214] would [014] not turn aside [05493] from following [0310] of him.
22 And Abner [074] said [0559] again [03254] to Asahel [06214], Turn thee aside [05493] from following [0310] me: wherefore should I smite [05221] thee to the ground [0776]? how then should I hold up [05375] my face [06440] to Joab [03097] thy brother [0251]?
23 Howbeit he refused [03985] to turn aside [05493]: wherefore Abner [074] with the hinder end [0310] of the spear [02595] smote [05221] him under [0413] the fifth [02570] rib, that the spear [02595] came out [03318] behind [0310] him; and he fell down [05307] there, and died [04191] in the same place [08478]: and it came to pass, that as many as came [0935] to the place [04725] where Asahel [06214] fell down [05307] and died [04191] stood still [05975].
