HEZEKIAH'S PRAYER. (2Ki. 19:14-34)

Hezekiah received the letter . . . and went up into the house of the Lord--Hezekiah, after reading it, hastened into the temple, spread it in the childlike confidence of faith before the Lord, as containing taunts deeply affecting the divine honor, and implored deliverance from this proud defier of God and man. The devout spirit of this prayer, the recognition of the Divine Being in the plenitude of His majesty--so strikingly contrasted with the fancy of the Assyrians as to His merely local power; his acknowledgment of the conquests obtained over other lands; and of the destruction of their wooden idols which, according to the Assyrian practice, were committed to the flames--because their tutelary deities were no gods; and the object for which he supplicated the divine interposition--that all the kingdoms of the earth might know that the Lord was the only God--this was an attitude worthy to be assumed by a pious theocratic king of the chosen people.

20 Now therefore, O LORD [03068] our God [0430], save [03467] us from his hand [03027], that all the kingdoms [04467] of the earth [0776] may know [03045] that thou art the LORD [03068], even thou only.
19 Now therefore, O LORD [03068] our God [0430], I beseech thee, save [03467] thou us out of his hand [03027], that all the kingdoms [04467] of the earth [0776] may know [03045] that thou art the LORD [03068] God [0430], even thou only.
17 Of a truth [0551], LORD [03068], the kings [04428] of Assyria [0804] have destroyed [02717] the nations [01471] and their lands [0776],
18 And have cast [05414] their gods [0430] into the fire [0784]: for they were no gods [0430], but the work [04639] of men's [0120] hands [03027], wood [06086] and stone [068]: therefore they have destroyed [06] them.
19 Now therefore, O LORD [03068] our God [0430], I beseech thee, save [03467] thou us out of his hand [03027], that all the kingdoms [04467] of the earth [0776] may know [03045] that thou art the LORD [03068] God [0430], even thou only.
18 O my God [0430], incline [05186] thine ear [0241], and hear [08085]; open [06491] thine eyes [05869], and behold [07200] our desolations [08074], and the city [05892] which is called [07121] by thy name [08034]: for we do not present [05307] our supplications [08469] before [06440] thee for our righteousnesses [06666], but for thy great [07227] mercies [07356].
4 In that day [03117], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], I will smite [05221] every horse [05483] with astonishment [08541], and his rider [07392] with madness [07697]: and I will open [06491] mine eyes [05869] upon the house [01004] of Judah [03063], and will smite [05221] every horse [05483] of the people [05971] with blindness [05788].
13 Love [0157] not sleep [08142], lest thou come to poverty [03423]; open [06491] thine eyes [05869], and thou shalt be satisfied [07646] with bread [03899].
19 The rich [06223] man shall lie down [07901], but he shall not be gathered [0622]: he openeth [06491] his eyes [05869], and he is not.
3 Incline [05186] your ear [0241], and come [03212] unto me: hear [08085], and your soul [05315] shall live [02421]; and I will make [03772] an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285] with you, even the sure [0539] mercies [02617] of David [01732].
1 Maschil [04905] of Asaph [0623]. Give ear [0238], O my people [05971], to my law [08451]: incline [05186] your ears [0241] to the words [0561] of my mouth [06310].
11 So shall the king [04428] greatly desire [0183] thy beauty [03308]: for he is thy Lord [0113]; and worship [07812] thou him.
3 For thou art my rock [05553] and my fortress [04686]; therefore for thy name's [08034] sake lead [05148] me, and guide [05095] me.
6 I have called [07121] upon thee, for thou wilt hear [06030] me, O God [0410]: incline [05186] thine ear [0241] unto me, and hear [08085] my speech [0565].
16 LORD [03068], bow down [05186] thine ear [0241], and hear [08085]: open [06491], LORD [03068], thine eyes [05869], and see [07200]: and hear [08085] the words [01697] of Sennacherib [05576], which hath sent [07971] him to reproach [02778] the living [02416] God [0430].
39 And when all the people [05971] saw [07200] it, they fell [05307] on their faces [06440]: and they said [0559], The LORD [03068], he is the God [0430]; the LORD [03068], he is the God [0430].
28 And now, O Lord [0136] GOD [03069], thou art that God [0430], and thy words [01697] be true [0571], and thou hast promised [01696] this goodness [02896] unto thy servant [05650]:
3 And this [01931] man [0376] went up [05927] out of his city [05892] yearly [03117] [03117] to worship [07812] and to sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] in Shiloh [07887]. And the two [08147] sons [01121] of Eli [05941], Hophni [02652] and Phinehas [06372], the priests [03548] of the LORD [03068], were there.
22 And there I will meet [03259] with thee, and I will commune [01696] with thee from above the mercy seat [03727], from between [0996] the two [08147] cherubims [03742] which are upon [05921] the ark [0727] of the testimony [05715], of all things which I will give thee in commandment [06680] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
4 So the people [05971] sent [07971] to Shiloh [07887], that they might bring [05375] from thence the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], which dwelleth [03427] between the cherubims [03742]: and the two [08147] sons [01121] of Eli [05941], Hophni [02652] and Phinehas [06372], were there with the ark [0727] of the covenant [01285] of God [0430].
15 And Hezekiah [02396] prayed [06419] before [06440] the LORD [03068], and said [0559], O LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478], which dwellest [03427] between the cherubims [03742], thou art the God [0430], even thou alone, of all the kingdoms [04467] of the earth [0776]; thou hast made [06213] heaven [08064] and earth [0776].
10 Thus shall ye speak [0559] to Hezekiah [02396] king [04428] of Judah [03063], saying [0559], Let not thy God [0430] in whom thou trustest [0982] deceive [05377] thee, saying [0559], Jerusalem [03389] shall not be delivered [05414] into the hand [03027] of the king [04428] of Assyria [0804].
11 Behold, thou hast heard [08085] what the kings [04428] of Assyria [0804] have done [06213] to all lands [0776], by destroying them utterly [02763]: and shalt thou be delivered [05337]?
12 Have the gods [0430] of the nations [01471] delivered [05337] them which my fathers [01] have destroyed [07843]; as Gozan [01470], and Haran [02771], and Rezeph [07530], and the children [01121] of Eden [05729] which were in Thelasar [08515]?
13 Where is the king [04428] of Hamath [02574], and the king [04428] of Arpad [0774], and the king [04428] of the city [05892] of Sepharvaim [05617], of Hena [02012], and Ivah [05755]?
14 And Hezekiah [02396] received [03947] the letter [05612] of the hand [03027] of the messengers [04397], and read [07121] it: and Hezekiah [02396] went up [05927] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and spread [06566] it before [06440] the LORD [03068].
