ELIJAH DENOUNCES JUDGMENTS AGAINST AHAB AND JEZEBEL. (Kg1 21:17-29)
Hast thou killed, and also taken possession?--While Ahab was in the act of surveying his ill-gotten possession, Elijah, by divine commission, stood before him. The appearance of the prophet, at such a time, was ominous of evil, but his language was much more so (compare Eze 45:8; Eze 46:16-18). Instead of shrinking with horror from the atrocious crime, Ahab eagerly hastened to his newly acquired property. |
16 Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; If the prince [05387] give [05414] a gift [04979] unto any [0376] of his sons [01121], the inheritance [05159] thereof shall be his sons [01121]'; it shall be their possession [0272] by inheritance [05159].
17 But if he give [05414] a gift [04979] of his inheritance [05159] to one [0259] of his servants [05650], then it shall be his to the year [08141] of liberty [01865]; after it shall return [07725] to the prince [05387]: but his inheritance [05159] shall be his sons [01121]' for them.
18 Moreover the prince [05387] shall not take [03947] of the people's [05971] inheritance [05159] by oppression [03238], to thrust [03238] them out of their possession [0272]; but he shall give his sons [01121] inheritance [05157] out of his own possession [0272]: that my people [05971] be not scattered [06327] every man [0376] from his possession [0272].
8 In the land [0776] shall be his possession [0272] in Israel [03478]: and my princes [05387] shall no more oppress [03238] my people [05971]; and the rest of the land [0776] shall they give [05414] to the house [01004] of Israel [03478] according to their tribes [07626].
17 And the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came to Elijah [0452] the Tishbite [08664], saying [0559],
18 Arise [06965], go down [03381] to meet [07125] Ahab [0256] king [04428] of Israel [03478], which is in Samaria [08111]: behold, he is in the vineyard [03754] of Naboth [05022], whither he is gone down [03381] to possess [03423] it.
19 And thou shalt speak [01696] unto him, saying [0559], Thus saith [0559] the LORD [03068], Hast thou killed [07523], and also taken possession [03423]? 22 And will make [05414] thine house [01004] like the house [01004] of Jeroboam [03379] the son [01121] of Nebat [05028], and like the house [01004] of Baasha [01201] the son [01121] of Ahijah [0281], for the provocation [03708] wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger [03707], and made Israel [03478] to sin [02398].
23 And of Jezebel [0348] also spake [01696] the LORD [03068], saying [0559], The dogs [03611] shall eat [0398] Jezebel [0348] by the wall [02426] of Jezreel [03157].
24 Him that dieth [04191] of Ahab [0256] in the city [05892] the dogs [03611] shall eat [0398]; and him that dieth [04191] in the field [07704] shall the fowls [05775] of the air [08064] eat [0398].
25 But there was none like unto Ahab [0256], which did sell [04376] himself to work [06213] wickedness [07451] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068], whom Jezebel [0348] his wife [0802] stirred up [05496].
26 And he did very [03966] abominably [08581] in following [03212] [0310] idols [01544], according to all things as did [06213] the Amorites [0567], whom the LORD [03068] cast out [03423] before [06440] the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
27 And it came to pass, when Ahab [0256] heard [08085] those words [01697], that he rent [07167] his clothes [0899], and put [07760] sackcloth [08242] upon his flesh [01320], and fasted [06684], and lay [07901] in sackcloth [08242], and went [01980] softly [0328].
28 And the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came to Elijah [0452] the Tishbite [08664], saying [0559],
29 Seest [07200] thou how Ahab [0256] humbleth [03665] himself before [06440] me? because [03282] he humbleth [03665] himself before [06440] me, I will not bring [0935] the evil [07451] in his days [03117]: but in his son's [01121] days [03117] will I bring [0935] the evil [07451] upon his house [01004].
