Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
began Elah the son of Baasha to reign--(compare Kg1 15:33). From this it will appear that Baasha died in the twenty-third year of his reign (see on Kg1 15:2), and Elah, who was a prince of dissolute habits, reigned not fully two years. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Two years - i. e., More than one year, or, at any rate, some portion of two distinct years (compare Kg1 16:10). |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The Reign of Elah. - As Baasha reigned from the third to the twenty-sixth year of Asa, i.e., not quite twenty-four years, but only twenty-three years and a few months, so his son Elah reigned from the twenty-sixth to the twenty-seventh year of Asa, i.e., not quite two years.
Kg1 16:9-11
Zimri, the commander of the half of his war-chariots, conspired against him, and not only slew him, when he was intoxicated (שׁכּור שׁתה) at a drinking bout in the house of Arza, the prefect of his palace, but after ascending the throne exterminated the whole family of Baasha to the very last man. The prefect of the palace was no doubt a party to the conspiracy, and had probably arranged the drinking bout in his house for the purpose of carrying it out. "He did not leave him בּקיר משׁתּין (see at Kg1 14:10), either his avengers (גּאליו, blood-relations, who might have avenged his death) or his friends." These words simply serve to explain בּקיר משׁתּין, and show that this phrase is to be understood as relating to males only.
Kg1 16:12-14
"According to the word of the Lord;" see at Kg1 16:1. כּל־חטּאות אל, with regard to all, i.e., on account of all the sins (compare Kg1 16:7, where על is used). בּהבליהם, through their nothingnesses, i.e., their idols, by which the golden calves are meant. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Two years - One compleat, and part of the other, Kg1 16:10. |
2 Three [07969] years [08141] reigned [04427] he in Jerusalem [03389]. And his mother's [0517] name [08034] was Maachah [04601], the daughter [01323] of Abishalom [053].
33 In the third [07969] year [08141] of Asa [0609] king [04428] of Judah [03063] began Baasha [01201] the son [01121] of Ahijah [0281] to reign [04427] over all Israel [03478] in Tirzah [08656], twenty [06242] and four [0702] years [08141].
10 And Zimri [02174] went in [0935] and smote [05221] him, and killed [04191] him, in the twenty [06242] and seventh [07651] year [08141] of Asa [0609] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and reigned [04427] in his stead.
7 And also by the hand [03027] of the prophet [05030] Jehu [03058] the son [01121] of Hanani [02607] came the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] against Baasha [01201], and against his house [01004], even for all the evil [07451] that he did [06213] in the sight [05869] of the LORD [03068], in provoking him to anger [03707] with the work [04639] of his hands [03027], in being like the house [01004] of Jeroboam [03379]; and because he killed [05221] him.
1 Then the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] came to Jehu [03058] the son [01121] of Hanani [02607] against Baasha [01201], saying [0559],
12 Thus did Zimri [02174] destroy [08045] all the house [01004] of Baasha [01201], according to the word [01697] of the LORD [03068], which he spake [01696] against Baasha [01201] by [03027] Jehu [03058] the prophet [05030],
13 For all the sins [02403] of Baasha [01201], and the sins [02403] of Elah [0425] his son [01121], by which they sinned [02398], and by which they made Israel [03478] to sin [02398], in provoking the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] to anger [03707] with their vanities [01892].
14 Now the rest [03499] of the acts [01697] of Elah [0425], and all that he did [06213], are they not written [03789] in the book [05612] of the chronicles [01697] [03117] of the kings [04428] of Israel [03478]?
10 Therefore, behold, I will bring [0935] evil [07451] upon the house [01004] of Jeroboam [03379], and will cut off [03772] from Jeroboam [03379] him that pisseth [08366] against the wall [07023], and him that is shut up [06113] and left [05800] in Israel [03478], and will take away [01197] the remnant [0310] of the house [01004] of Jeroboam [03379], as a man taketh away [01197] dung [01557], till it be all gone [08552].
9 And his servant [05650] Zimri [02174], captain [08269] of half [04276] his chariots [07393], conspired [07194] against him, as he was in Tirzah [08656], drinking [08354] himself drunk [07910] in the house [01004] of Arza [0777] steward of his house [01004] in Tirzah [08656].
10 And Zimri [02174] went in [0935] and smote [05221] him, and killed [04191] him, in the twenty [06242] and seventh [07651] year [08141] of Asa [0609] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and reigned [04427] in his stead.
11 And it came to pass, when he began to reign [04427], as soon as he sat [03427] on his throne [03678], that he slew [05221] all the house [01004] of Baasha [01201]: he left [07604] him not one that pisseth [08366] against a wall [07023], neither of his kinsfolks [01350], nor of his friends [07453].
10 And Zimri [02174] went in [0935] and smote [05221] him, and killed [04191] him, in the twenty [06242] and seventh [07651] year [08141] of Asa [0609] king [04428] of Judah [03063], and reigned [04427] in his stead.
