A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
DAVID, BY GOD'S DIRECTION, GOES UP TO HEBRON, AND IS MADE KING OVER JUDAH. (Sa2 2:1-7)
David inquired of the Lord--By Urim (Sa1 23:6, Sa1 23:9; Sa1 30:7-8). He knew his destination, but he knew also that the providence of God would pave the way. Therefore he would take no step in such a crisis of his own and the nation's history, without asking and obtaining the divine direction. He was told to go into Judah, and fix his headquarters in Hebron, whither he accordingly repaired with his now considerable force. There his interests were very powerful; for he was not only within his own tribe, and near chiefs with whom he had been long in friendly relations (see on Sa1 30:26), but Hebron was the capital and center of Judah, and one of the Levitical cities; the inhabitants of which were strongly attached to him, both from sympathy with his cause ever since the massacre at Nob, and from the prospect of realizing in his person their promised pre-eminence among the tribes. The princes of Judah, therefore, offered him the crown over their tribe, and it was accepted. More could not, with prudence, be done in the circumstances of the country (Ch1 11:3). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Enquired of the Lord - Through Abiathar, the high priest. The death of Saul and Jonathan had entirely changed David's position, and therefore he needed divine guidance how to act under the new circumstances in which he was placed. Compare the marginal references.
Hebron was well suited for the temporary capital of David's kingdom, being situated in a strong position in the mountains of Judah, amidst David's friends, and withal having especially sacred associations (see the marginal references note). It appears to have also been the center of a district Sa2 2:3. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
David's return to Hebron, and anointing as king over Judah. - Sa2 2:1. "After this," i.e., after the facts related in 2 Samuel 1, David inquired of the Lord, namely through the Urim, whether he should go up to one of the towns of Judah, and if so, to which. He received the reply, "to Hebron," a place peculiarly well adapted for a capital, not only from its situation upon the mountains, and in the centre of the tribe, but also from the sacred reminiscences connected with it from the olden time. David could have no doubt that, now that Saul was dead, he would have to give up his existing connection with the Philistines and return to his own land. But as the Philistines had taken the greater part of the Israelitish territory through their victory at Gilboa, and there was good reason to fear that the adherents of Saul, more especially the army with Abner, Saul's cousin, at its head, would refuse to acknowledge David as king, and consequently a civil war might break out, David would not return to his own land without the express permission of the Lord. Sa2 1:2-4. When he went with his wives and all his retinue (vid., Sa1 27:2) to Hebron and the "cities of Hebron," i.e., the places belonging to the territory of Hebron, the men of Judah came (in the persons of their elders) and anointed him king over the house, i.e., the tribe, of Judah. Just as Saul was made king by the tribes after his anointing by Samuel (Sa1 11:15), so David was first of all anointed by Judah here, and afterwards by the rest of the tribes (Sa2 5:3).
A new section commences with ויּגּדוּ. The first act of David as king was to send messengers to Jabesh, to thank the inhabitants of this city for burying Saul, and to announce to them his own anointing as king. As this expression of thanks involved a solemn recognition of the departed king, by which David divested himself of even the appearance of a rebellion, the announcement of the anointing he had received contained an indirect summons to the Jabeshites to recognise him as their king now. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Enquired - By Urim. Thus David begins at the right end, and lays his foundation in God's counsel and assistance. Shall I go - He asked not whether he should take the kingdom; for that was appointed before; and he would not offend God, nor dishonour his ordinance with unnecessary enquiries; but only where he should enter upon it; whether in Judah, as he supposed, because of his relation to that tribe, and his interest in it; or in some other tribe: for he doth not limit God, but resolves exactly to follow his counsels. Hebron - Which was next to Jerusalem (part whereof the Jebusites now possessed) the chief city of that tribe, and a city of the priests, and in the very center of that tribe, to which the whole tribe might speedily resort, when need required. And the sepulchres of the patriarchs adjoining to Hebron, would remind him of the ancient promise. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
David inquired of the Lord - By means of Abiathar the priest; for he did not know whether the different tribes were willing to receive him, though he was fully persuaded that God had appointed him king over Israel.
Unto Hebron - The metropolis of the tribe of Judah, one of the richest regions in Judea. The mountains of Hebron were famed for fruits, herbage, and honey; and many parts were well adapted for vines, olives, and different kinds of grain, abounding in springs of excellent water, as the most accurate travelers have asserted. |
3 Therefore came [0935] all the elders [02205] of Israel [03478] to the king [04428] to Hebron [02275]; and David [01732] made [03772] a covenant [01285] with them in Hebron [02275] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and they anointed [04886] David [01732] king [04428] over Israel [03478], according to the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] by [03027] Samuel [08050].
26 And when David [01732] came [0935] to Ziklag [06860], he sent [07971] of the spoil [07998] unto the elders [02205] of Judah [03063], even to his friends [07453], saying [0559], Behold a present [01293] for you of the spoil [07998] of the enemies [0341] of the LORD [03068];
7 And David [01732] said [0559] to Abiathar [054] the priest [03548], Ahimelech's [0288] son [01121], I pray thee, bring me hither [05066] the ephod [0646]. And Abiathar [054] brought [05066] thither the ephod [0646] to David [01732].
8 And David [01732] enquired [07592] at the LORD [03068], saying [0559], Shall I pursue [07291] after [0310] this troop [01416]? shall I overtake [05381] them? And he answered [0559] him, Pursue [07291]: for thou shalt surely [05381] overtake [05381] them, and without fail [05337] recover [05337] all.
9 And David [01732] knew [03045] that Saul [07586] secretly practised [02790] mischief [07451] against him; and he said [0559] to Abiathar [054] the priest [03548], Bring hither [05066] the ephod [0646].
6 And it came to pass, when Abiathar [054] the son [01121] of Ahimelech [0288] fled [01272] to David [01732] to Keilah [07084], that he came down [03381] with an ephod [0646] in his hand [03027].
1 And it came to pass after this [0310], that David [01732] enquired [07592] of the LORD [03068], saying [0559], Shall I go up [05927] into any [0259] of the cities [05892] of Judah [03063]? And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Go up [05927]. And David [01732] said [0559], Whither shall I go up [05927]? And he said [0559], Unto Hebron [02275].
2 So David [01732] went up [05927] thither, and his two [08147] wives [0802] also, Ahinoam [0293] the Jezreelitess [03159], and Abigail [026] Nabal's [05037] wife [0802] the Carmelite [03761].
3 And his men [0582] that were with him did David [01732] bring up [05927], every man [0376] with his household [01004]: and they dwelt [03427] in the cities [05892] of Hebron [02275].
4 And the men [0582] of Judah [03063] came [0935], and there they anointed [04886] David [01732] king [04428] over the house [01004] of Judah [03063]. And they told [05046] David [01732], saying [0559], That the men [0582] of Jabeshgilead [03003] [01568] were they that buried [06912] Saul [07586].
5 And David [01732] sent [07971] messengers [04397] unto the men [0582] of Jabeshgilead [03003] [01568], and said [0559] unto them, Blessed [01288] be ye of the LORD [03068], that ye have shewed [06213] this kindness [02617] unto your lord [0113], even unto Saul [07586], and have buried [06912] him.
6 And now the LORD [03068] shew [06213] kindness [02617] and truth [0571] unto you: and I also will requite [06213] you this kindness [02896], because ye have done [06213] this thing [01697].
7 Therefore now let your hands [03027] be strengthened [02388], and be ye valiant [01121] [02428]: for your master [0113] Saul [07586] is dead [04191], and also the house [01004] of Judah [03063] have anointed [04886] me king [04428] over them.
3 And his men [0582] that were with him did David [01732] bring up [05927], every man [0376] with his household [01004]: and they dwelt [03427] in the cities [05892] of Hebron [02275].
3 So all the elders [02205] of Israel [03478] came [0935] to the king [04428] to Hebron [02275]; and king [04428] David [01732] made [03772] a league [01285] with them in Hebron [02275] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and they anointed [04886] David [01732] king [04428] over Israel [03478].
15 And all the people [05971] went [03212] to Gilgal [01537]; and there they made Saul [07586] king [04427] before [06440] the LORD [03068] in Gilgal [01537]; and there they sacrificed [02076] sacrifices [02077] of peace offerings [08002] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and there Saul [07586] and all the men [0582] of Israel [03478] rejoiced [08055] greatly [03966].
2 And David [01732] arose [06965], and he passed over [05674] with the six [08337] hundred [03967] men [0376] that were with him unto Achish [0397], the son [01121] of Maoch [04582], king [04428] of Gath [01661].
2 It came even to pass on the third [07992] day [03117], that, behold, a man [0376] came [0935] out of the camp [04264] from Saul [07586] with his clothes [0899] rent [07167], and earth [0127] upon his head [07218]: and so it was, when he came [0935] to David [01732], that he fell [05307] to the earth [0776], and did obeisance [07812].
3 And David [01732] said [0559] unto him, From whence comest [0935] thou? And he said [0559] unto him, Out of the camp [04264] of Israel [03478] am I escaped [04422].
4 And David [01732] said [0559] unto him, How [04100] went the matter [01697]? I pray thee, tell [05046] me. And he answered [0559], That the people [05971] are fled [05127] from the battle [04421], and many [07235] of the people [05971] also are fallen [05307] and dead [04191]; and Saul [07586] and Jonathan [03083] his son [01121] are dead [04191] also.
