to the wall-- (Sa2 21:12) --"the street" of Beth-shan. The street was called from the temple which stood in it. And they had to go along it to the wall of the city (see Jos 17:11). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
In the house of Ashtaroth - This was doubtless the famous temple of Venus in Askelon mentioned by Herodotus as the most ancient of all her temples. Hence, the special mention of Askelon Sa2 1:20. The placing Saul's armour as a trophy in the temple of Ashtaroth was a counterpart to the placing Goliath's sword in the tabernacle Sa1 21:9. In Ch1 10:10 it is added that they "fastened Saul's head in the temple of Dagon," probably either in Gaza Jdg 16:21, or in Ashdod Sa1 5:1-3. This was, perhaps, in retaliation for the similar treatment of Goliath's head Sa1 17:54. The variations seem to imply that both this narrative and that in Ch1 10:1-14 are compiled from a common and a fuller document. |

They put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth - As David had done in placing the sword of Goliath in the tabernacle. We have already seen that it was common for the conquerors to consecrate armor and spoils taken in war, to those who were the objects of religious worship.
They fastened his body to the wall - Probably by means of iron hooks; but it is said, Sa2 21:12, that these bodies were fastened in the Street of Beth-shan. This may mean that the place where they were fastened to the wall was the main street or entrance into the city. |
11 And Manasseh [04519] had in Issachar [03485] and in Asher [0836] Bethshean [01052] and her towns [01323], and Ibleam [02991] and her towns [01323], and the inhabitants [03427] of Dor [01756] and her towns [01323], and the inhabitants [03427] of Endor [05874] and her towns [01323], and the inhabitants [03427] of Taanach [08590] and her towns [01323], and the inhabitants [03427] of Megiddo [04023] and her towns [01323], even three [07969] countries [05316].
12 And David [01732] went [03212] and took [03947] the bones [06106] of Saul [07586] and the bones [06106] of Jonathan [03083] his son [01121] from the men [01167] of Jabeshgilead [03003] [01568], which had stolen [01589] them from the street [07339] of Bethshan [01052], where the Philistines [06430] had hanged [08511] [08518] them, when [03117] the Philistines [06430] had slain [05221] Saul [07586] in Gilboa [01533]:
1 Now the Philistines [06430] fought [03898] against Israel [03478]; and the men [0376] of Israel [03478] fled [05127] from before [06440] the Philistines [06430], and fell down [05307] slain [02491] in mount [02022] Gilboa [01533].
2 And the Philistines [06430] followed hard [01692] after [0310] Saul [07586], and after [0310] his sons [01121]; and the Philistines [06430] slew [05221] Jonathan [03129], and Abinadab [041], and Malchishua [04444], the sons [01121] of Saul [07586].
3 And the battle [04421] went sore [03513] against Saul [07586], and the archers [03384] [07198] hit [04672] him, and he was wounded [02342] of the archers [03384].
4 Then said [0559] Saul [07586] to his armourbearer [05375] [03627], Draw [08025] thy sword [02719], and thrust [01856] me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised [06189] come [0935] and abuse [05953] me. But his armourbearer [05375] [03627] would [014] not; for he was sore [03966] afraid [03372]. So Saul [07586] took [03947] a sword [02719], and fell [05307] upon it.
5 And when his armourbearer [05375] [03627] saw [07200] that Saul [07586] was dead [04191], he fell [05307] likewise on the sword [02719], and died [04191].
6 So Saul [07586] died [04191], and his three [07969] sons [01121], and all his house [01004] died [04191] together [03162].
7 And when all the men [0376] of Israel [03478] that were in the valley [06010] saw [07200] that they fled [05127], and that Saul [07586] and his sons [01121] were dead [04191], then they forsook [05800] their cities [05892], and fled [05127]: and the Philistines [06430] came [0935] and dwelt [03427] in them.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow [04283], when the Philistines [06430] came [0935] to strip [06584] the slain [02491], that they found [04672] Saul [07586] and his sons [01121] fallen [05307] in mount [02022] Gilboa [01533].
9 And when they had stripped [06584] him, they took [05375] his head [07218], and his armour [03627], and sent [07971] into the land [0776] of the Philistines [06430] round about [05439], to carry tidings [01319] unto their idols [06091], and to the people [05971].
10 And they put [07760] his armour [03627] in the house [01004] of their gods [0430], and fastened [08628] his head [01538] in the temple [01004] of Dagon [01712].
11 And when all Jabeshgilead [03003] [01568] heard [08085] all that the Philistines [06430] had done [06213] to Saul [07586],
12 They arose [06965], all the valiant [02428] men [0376], and took away [05375] the body [01480] of Saul [07586], and the bodies [01480] of his sons [01121], and brought [0935] them to Jabesh [03003], and buried [06912] their bones [06106] under the oak [0424] in Jabesh [03003], and fasted [06684] seven [07651] days [03117].
13 So Saul [07586] died [04191] for his transgression [04604] which he committed [04603] against the LORD [03068], even against the word [01697] of the LORD [03068], which he kept [08104] not, and also for asking [07592] counsel of one that had a familiar spirit [0178], to enquire [01875] of it;
14 And enquired [01875] not of the LORD [03068]: therefore he slew [04191] him, and turned [05437] the kingdom [04410] unto David [01732] the son [01121] of Jesse [03448].
54 And David [01732] took [03947] the head [07218] of the Philistine [06430], and brought [0935] it to Jerusalem [03389]; but he put [07760] his armour [03627] in his tent [0168].
1 And the Philistines [06430] took [03947] the ark [0727] of God [0430], and brought [0935] it from Ebenezer [072] unto Ashdod [0795].
2 When the Philistines [06430] took [03947] the ark [0727] of God [0430], they brought [0935] it into the house [01004] of Dagon [01712], and set [03322] it by [0681] Dagon [01712].
3 And when they of Ashdod [0796] arose early [07925] on the morrow [04283], behold, Dagon [01712] was fallen [05307] upon his face [06440] to the earth [0776] before [06440] the ark [0727] of the LORD [03068]. And they took [03947] Dagon [01712], and set [07725] him in his place [04725] again [07725].
21 But the Philistines [06430] took [0270] him, and put out [05365] his eyes [05869], and brought him down [03381] to Gaza [05804], and bound [0631] him with fetters of brass [05178]; and he did grind [02912] in the prison [0631] house [01004].
10 And they put [07760] his armour [03627] in the house [01004] of their gods [0430], and fastened [08628] his head [01538] in the temple [01004] of Dagon [01712].
9 And the priest [03548] said [0559], The sword [02719] of Goliath [01555] the Philistine [06430], whom thou slewest [05221] in the valley [06010] of Elah [0425], behold, it is here wrapped [03874] in a cloth [08071] behind [0310] the ephod [0646]: if thou wilt take [03947] that, take [03947] it: for there is no other [0312] save [02108] that here [02088]. And David [01732] said [0559], There is none like that; give [05414] it me.
20 Tell [05046] it not in Gath [01661], publish [01319] it not in the streets [02351] of Askelon [0831]; lest the daughters [01323] of the Philistines [06430] rejoice [08055], lest the daughters [01323] of the uncircumcised [06189] triumph [05937].
