SAUL PURSUES HIM. (Sa1 23:19-29)
Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself with us?--From the tell of Ziph a panorama of the whole surrounding district is to be seen. No wonder, then, that the Ziphites saw David and his men passing to and fro in the mountains of the wilderness. Spying him at a distance when he ventured to show himself on the hill of Hachilah, "on the right hand of the wilderness," that is, the south side of Ziph, they sent in haste to Saul, to tell him of the lurking place of his enemy [VAN DE VELDE]. |

(Hachilah is thought by Conder to be the long ridge called El Kolah). For Jeshimon, see the margin and Num 21:20. |

Ziphites - Who were of David's own tribe tho' for this their unnatural carriage to him, he calls them strangers, Psa 54:3. |
19 Then came up [05927] the Ziphites [02130] to Saul [07586] to Gibeah [01390], saying [0559], Doth not David [01732] hide [05641] himself with us in strong holds [04679] in the wood [02793], in the hill [01389] of Hachilah [02444], which is on the south [03225] of Jeshimon [03452]?
20 Now therefore, O king [04428], come down [03381] according to all the desire [0185] of thy soul [05315] to come down [03381]; and our part shall be to deliver [05462] him into the king's [04428] hand [03027].
21 And Saul [07586] said [0559], Blessed [01288] be ye of the LORD [03068]; for ye have compassion [02550] on me.
22 Go [03212], I pray you, prepare [03559] yet, and know [03045] and see [07200] his place [04725] where his haunt [07272] is, and who hath seen [07200] him there: for it is told [0559] me that he dealeth very [06191] subtilly [06191].
23 See [07200] therefore, and take knowledge [03045] of all the lurking places [04224] where he hideth [02244] himself, and come ye again [07725] to me with the certainty [03559], and I will go [01980] with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be [03426] in the land [0776], that I will search [02664] him out throughout all the thousands [0505] of Judah [03063].
24 And they arose [06965], and went [03212] to Ziph [02128] before [06440] Saul [07586]: but David [01732] and his men [0582] were in the wilderness [04057] of Maon [04584], in the plain [06160] on the south [03225] of Jeshimon [03452].
25 Saul [07586] also and his men [0582] went [03212] to seek [01245] him. And they told [05046] David [01732]: wherefore he came down [03381] into a rock [05553], and abode [03427] in the wilderness [04057] of Maon [04584]. And when Saul [07586] heard [08085] that, he pursued [07291] after [0310] David [01732] in the wilderness [04057] of Maon [04584].
26 And Saul [07586] went [03212] on this side [06654] of the mountain [02022], and David [01732] and his men [0582] on that side [06654] of the mountain [02022]: and David [01732] made haste [02648] to get away [03212] for fear [06440] of Saul [07586]; for Saul [07586] and his men [0582] compassed [05849] David [01732] and his men [0582] round about [05849] to take [08610] them.
27 But there came [0935] a messenger [04397] unto Saul [07586], saying [0559], Haste [04116] thee, and come [03212]; for the Philistines [06430] have invaded [06584] the land [0776].
28 Wherefore Saul [07586] returned [07725] from pursuing [07291] after [0310] David [01732], and went [03212] against [07125] the Philistines [06430]: therefore they called [07121] that place [04725] Selahammahlekoth [05555].
29 And David [01732] went up [05927] from thence, and dwelt [03427] in strong holds [04679] at Engedi [05872].
20 And from Bamoth [01120] in the valley [01516], that is in the country [07704] of Moab [04124], to the top [07218] of Pisgah [06449], which looketh [08259] toward [06440] Jeshimon [03452].
3 For strangers [02114] are risen up [06965] against me, and oppressors [06184] seek [01245] after my soul [05315]: they have not set [07760] God [0430] before them. Selah [05542].
