Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
David left the sheep with a keeper--This is the only instance in which the hired shepherd is distinguished from the master or one of his family.
trench--some feeble attempt at a rampart. It appears (see Margin) to have been formed by a line of carts or chariots, which, from the earliest times, was the practice of nomad people. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The trench - Rather, "the wagons," which were all put together in the camp so as to form a kind of bulwark or fortification (see Sa1 26:5, Sa1 26:7). Here David left his "carriage" Sa1 17:22, i. e., the things which he had carried, "his things" as we should say, or baggage (translated stuff in Sa1 10:22; Sa1 25:13; Sa1 30:24). There seems to have been an officer ("the keeper," Sa1 17:22) in the Hebrew army whose charge it was to guard the baggage. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Went, &c. - Jesse little thought of sending his son to the camp, just at that critical juncture. But the wise God orders the time and all the circumstances of affairs, so as to serve the designs of his own glory. |
22 And David [01732] left [05203] his carriage [03627] in the hand [03027] of the keeper [08104] of the carriage [03627], and ran [07323] into the army [04634], and came [0935] and saluted [07592] [07965] his brethren [0251].
24 For who will hearken [08085] unto you in this matter [01697]? but as his part [02506] is that goeth down [03381] [03381] to the battle [04421], so shall his part [02506] be that tarrieth [03427] by the stuff [03627]: they shall part [02505] alike [03162].
13 And David [01732] said [0559] unto his men [0582], Gird ye on [02296] every man [0376] his sword [02719]. And they girded on [02296] every man [0376] his sword [02719]; and David [01732] also girded on [02296] his sword [02719]: and there went up [05927] after [0310] David [01732] about four [0702] hundred [03967] men [0376]; and two hundred [03967] abode [03427] by the stuff [03627].
22 Therefore they enquired [07592] of the LORD [03068] further, if the man [0376] should yet come [0935] thither [01988]. And the LORD [03068] answered [0559], Behold, he hath hid [02244] himself among the stuff [03627].
22 And David [01732] left [05203] his carriage [03627] in the hand [03027] of the keeper [08104] of the carriage [03627], and ran [07323] into the army [04634], and came [0935] and saluted [07592] [07965] his brethren [0251].
7 So David [01732] and Abishai [052] came [0935] to the people [05971] by night [03915]: and, behold, Saul [07586] lay [07901] sleeping [03463] within the trench [04570], and his spear [02595] stuck [04600] in the ground [0776] at his bolster [04763]: but Abner [074] and the people [05971] lay [07901] round about [05439] him.
5 And David [01732] arose [06965], and came [0935] to the place [04725] where Saul [07586] had pitched [02583]: and David [01732] beheld [07200] the place [04725] where Saul [07586] lay [07901], and Abner [074] the son [01121] of Ner [05369], the captain [08269] of his host [06635]: and Saul [07586] lay [07901] in the trench [04570], and the people [05971] pitched [02583] round about [05439] him.
