Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
seats--rather as the Greek is translated in this very verse, "thrones," of course lower and smaller than the grand central throne. So Rev 16:10, "the seat (rather, throne) of the beasts," in hellish parody of God's throne.
four and twenty elders--Greek, "the four and twenty (or as one oldest manuscript, 'twenty-four') elders": the well-known elders [ALFORD]. But TREGELLES translates, "Upon the twenty-four thrones (I saw: omitted in two oldest manuscripts) elders sitting": which is more probable, as the twenty-four elders were not mentioned before, whereas the twenty-four thrones were. They are not angels, for they have white robes and crowns of victory, implying a conflict and endurance, "Thou hast redeemed us": they represent the Heads of the Old and New Testament churches respectively, the Twelve Patriarchs (compare Rev 7:5-8, not in their personal, but in their representative character), and Twelve Apostles. So in Rev 15:3, "the song of Moses, and of the Lamb," the double constituents of the Church are implied, the Old Testament and the New Testament. "Elders" is the very term for the ministry both of the Old and New Testament, the Jewish and the catholic Gentile Church. The tabernacle was a "pattern" of the heavenly antitype; the holy place, a figure of HEAVEN ITSELF. Thus Jehovah's throne is represented by the mercy seat in the holiest, the Shekinah-cloud over it. "The seven lamps of fire before the throne" (Rev 4:5) are antitypical to the seven-branched candlestick also in the holiest, emblem of the manifold Spirit of God: "the sea of glass" (Rev 4:6) corresponds to the molten sea before the sanctuary, wherein the priests washed themselves before entering on their holy service; so introduced here in connection with the redeemed "priests unto God" (compare Note, see on Rev 15:2). The "four living creatures" (Rev 4:6-7) answer to the cherubim over the mercy seat. So the twenty-four throned and crowned elders are typified by the twenty-four chiefs of the twenty-four courses of priests, "Governors of the sanctuary, and governors of God" (Ch1 24:5; 1Ch. 25:1-31). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And round about the throne were four and twenty seats - Or rather, "thrones" - θρόνοι thronoi - the same word being used as what is rendered "throne" - θρόνος thronos. The word, indeed, properly denotes a seat, but it came to be employed to denote particularly the seat on which a monarch sat, and is properly translated thus in Rev 4:2-3. So it is rendered in Mat 5:34; Mat 19:28; Mat 23:22; Mat 25:31; Luk 1:32; and uniformly elsewhere in the New Testament (53 places in all), except in Luk 1:52; Rev 2:13; Rev 4:4; Rev 11:16; Rev 16:10, where it is rendered "seat and seats." It should have been rendered "thrones" here, and is so translated by Prof. Stuart. Coverdale and Tyndale render the word "seat" in each place in Rev 4:2-5. It was undoubtedly the design of the writer to represent those who sat on those seats as, in some sense, kings - for they have on their heads crowns of gold - and that idea should have been retained in the translation of this word.
And upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting - Very various opinions have been entertained in respect to those who thus appeared sitting around the throne, and to the question why the number twenty-four is mentioned. Instead of examining those opinions at length, it will be better to present, in a summary manner, what seems to be probable in regard to the intended reference. The following points, then, would appear to embrace all that can be known on this subject:
(1) These elders have a regal character, or are of a kingly order. This is apparent:
(a) because they are represented as sitting on "thrones," and
(b) because they have on their heads "crowns of gold."
(2) they are emblematic. They are designed to symbolize or represent some class of persons. This is clear:
(a) because it cannot be supposed that so small a number would compose the whole of those who are in fact around the throne of God, and,
(b) because there are other symbols there designed to represent something pertaining to the homage rendered to God, as the four living creatures and the angels, and this supposition is necessary in order to complete the symmetry and harmony of the representation.
(3) they are human beings, and are designed to have some relation to the race of man, and somehow to connect the human race with the worship of heaven. The four living creatures have another design; the angels Rev 5:1-14 have another; but these are manifestly of our race - persons from this world before the throne.
(4) they are designed in some way to be symbolic of the church as redeemed. Thus, they say Rev 5:9, "Thou hast redeemed us to God by thy blood."
(5) they are designed to represent the whole church in every land and every age of the world. Thus, they say Rev 5:9, "Thou hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation." This shows, further, that the whole representation is emblematic; for otherwise in so small a number - twenty-four - there could not be a representation out of every nation.
(6) they represent the church triumphant - the church victorious. Thus, they have crowns on their heads; they have harps in their hands Rev 5:8; they say that they are "kings and priests," and that they will "reign on the earth," Rev 5:10.
(7) the design, therefore, is to represent the church triumphant - redeemed - saved - as rendering praise and honor to God; as uniting with the hosts of heaven in adoring him for his perfections and for the wonders of his grace; As representatives of the church, they are admitted near to him; they encircle his throne; they appear victorious over every foe; and they come, in unison with the living creatures, and the angels, and the whole universe Rev 5:13, to ascribe power and dominion to God.
(8) as to the reason why the number "twenty-four" is mentioned, perhaps nothing certain can be determined. Ezekiel, in his vision Eze 8:16; Eze 11:1, saw twenty-five men between the porch and the altar, with their backs toward the temple, and their faces toward the earth - supposed to be representations of the twenty-four "courses" into which the body of priests was divided 1 Chr. 24:3-19, with the high priest among them, making up the number twenty-five. It is possible that John in this vision may have designed to refer to the church considered as a priesthood (compare the notes on Pe1 2:9), and to have alluded to the fact that the priesthood under the Jewish economy was divided into twenty-four courses, each with a presiding officer, and who was a representative of that portion of the priesthood over which he presided. If so, then the ideas which enter into the representation are these:
(a) That the whole church may be represented as a priesthood, or a community of priests - an idea which frequently occurs in the New Testament.
(b) That the church, as such a community of priests, is employed in the praise and worship of God - an idea, also, which finds abundant countenance in the New Testament.
(c) That, in a series of visions having a designed reference to the church, it was natural to introduce some symbol or emblem representing the church, and representing the fact that this is its office and employment. And,
(d) that this would be well expressed by an allusion derived from the ancient dispensation - the division of the priesthood into classes, over each one of which there presided an individual who might be considered as the representative of his class.
It is to be observed, indeed, that in one respect they are represented as" kings," but still this does not forbid the supposition that there might have been intermingled also another idea, that they were also "priests." Thus, the two ideas are blended by these same elders in Rev 5:10; "And hath made us unto our God kings and priests." Thus understood, the vision is designed to denote the fact that the representatives of the church, ultimately to be triumphant, are properly engaged in ascribing praise to God. The word "elders" here seems to be used in the sense of aged and venerable men, rather than as denoting office. They were such as by their age were qualified to preside over the different divisions of the priesthood.
Clothed in white raiment - Emblem of purity, and appropriate, therefore, to the representatives of the sanctified church. Compare Rev 3:4; Rev 6:11; Rev 7:9.
And they had on their heads crowns of gold - Emblematic of the fact that they sustained a kingly office. There was blended in the representation the idea that they were both "kings and priests." Thus, the idea is expressed by Peter Pe1 2:9, "a royal priesthood" - βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα basileion hierateuma. |

Throne (θρόνου)
A seat or chair. In Homer, an armchair with high back and footstool. Cushions were laid upon the seat, and over both seat and back carpets were spread. A royal throne. Used of the oracular seat of the priestess of Apollo. Apollo, in the "Eumenides" of Aeschylus, says: "Never, when I sat in the diviner's seat (μαντικοῖσιν ἐν θρόνοις) did I speak aught else than Zeus the father of the Olympians bade me" (616-618). Plato uses it of a teacher's seat. "I saw Hippias the Elean sitting in the opposite portico in a chair (ἐν θρόνῳ). Others were seated round him on benches (ἐπὶ βάθρων)," questioning him, "and he ex cathedre (ἐν θρόνῳ καθήμενος, lit., sitting in the chair) was determining their several questions to them, and discoursing of them" ("Protagoras," 315). Also used of a judge's bench, and a bishop's seat.
Seats (θρόνοι)
Rev., rightly, thrones. The word is the same as the last.
I saw
Omit.
Elders (πρεσβυτέρους)
See on Act 14:23. The twenty-four elders are usually taken to represent the one Church of Christ, as at once the Church of the old and of the new Covenant, figured by the twelve patriarchs and the twelve apostles.
"Then saw I people, as behind their leaders,
Coming behind them, garmented in white,
And such a whiteness never was on earth
.....
Under so fair a heaven as I describe
The four and twenty-elders, two by two,
Came on incoronate with flower-de-luce."
Dante, "Purgatorio," xxix., 64-84.
Clothed (περιβεβλημένους)
Rev., arrayed. Better, as indicating a more solemn investiture. See on Rev 3:5.
They had
Omit.
Crowns (στεφάνους)
See on Pe1 5:4; see on Jam 1:12. Στέφανος with the epithet golden is found only in Revelation. Compare Rev 9:7; Rev 14:14. The natural inference from this epithet and from the fact that the symbolism of Revelation is Hebrew, and that the Jews had the greatest detestation of the Greek games, would be that στέφανος is here used of the royal crown, especially since the Church is here represented as triumphant- a kingdom and priests. On the other hand, in the three passages of Revelation where John evidently refers to the kingly crown, he uses διάδημα (Rev 12:3; Rev 13:1; compare Rev 17:9, Rev 17:10; Rev 19:12). Trench ("Synonyms of the New Testament") claims that the crown in this passage is the crown, not of kinghood, but of glory and immortality. The golden crown (στέφανος) of the Son of Man (Rev 14:14) is the conqueror's crown.
It must be frankly admitted, however, that the somewhat doubtful meaning here, and such passages of the Septuagint as Sa2 12:30; Ch1 20:2; Psa 20:3; Eze 21:26; Zac 6:11,Zac 6:14, give some warrant for the remark of Professor Thayer ("New Testament Lexicon") that it is doubtful whether the distinction between στέφανος and διάδημα (the victor's wreath and the kingly crown) was strictly observed in Hellenistic Greek. The crown of thorns (στέφανος) placed on our Lord's head, was indeed woven, but it was the caricature of a royal crown. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
And round about the throne - In a circle, are four and twenty thrones, and on the thrones four and twenty elders - The most holy of all the former ages, Isa 24:23; Heb 12:1; representing the whole body of the saints. Sitting - In general; but falling down when they worship. Clothed in white raiment - This and their golden crowns show, that they had already finished their course and taken their place among the citizens of heaven. They are never termed souls, and hence it is probable that they had glorified bodies already. Compare Mat 27:52. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Four and twenty elders - Perhaps this is in reference to the smaller Sanhedrin at Jerusalem, which was composed of twenty-three elders; or to the princes of the twenty-four courses of the Jewish priests which ministered at the tabernacle and the temple, at first appointed by David.
Clothed in white raiment - The garments of the priests.
On their heads crowns of gold - An emblem of their dignity. The Jewish writers represent human souls as being created first; and before they enter the body, each is taken by an angel into paradise, where it sees the righteous sitting in glory with crowns upon their heads. Rab. Tanchum, fol. 39, 4. |
5 Thus were they divided [02505] by lot [01486], one sort [0428] with another [0428]; for the governors [08269] of the sanctuary [06944], and governors [08269] of the house of God [0430], were of the sons [01121] of Eleazar [0499], and of the sons [01121] of Ithamar [0385].

5 And [2532] out of [1537] the throne [2362] proceeded [1607] lightnings [796] and [2532] thunderings [1027] and [2532] voices [5456]: and [2532] there were seven [2033] lamps [2985] of fire [4442] burning [2545] before [1799] the throne [2362], which [3739] are [1526] the seven [2033] Spirits [4151] of God [2316].

5 Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Juda [2455] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Reuben [4502] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Gad [1045] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505].

9 But [1161] ye [5210] are a chosen [1588] generation [1085], a royal [934] priesthood [2406], an holy [40] nation [1484], a peculiar [1519] [4047] people [2992]; that [3704] ye should shew forth [1804] the praises [703] of him who hath called [2564] you [5209] out of [1537] darkness [4655] into [1519] his [846] marvellous [2298] light [5457]:
9 After [3326] this [5023] I beheld [1492], and [2532], lo [2400], a great [4183] multitude [3793], which [3739] no man [3762] could [1410] number [705] [846], of [1537] all [3956] nations [1484], and [2532] kindreds [5443], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] tongues [1100], stood [2476] before [1799] the throne [2362], and [2532] before [1799] the Lamb [721], clothed [4016] with white [3022] robes [4749], and [2532] palms [5404] in [1722] their [846] hands [5495];
11 And [2532] white [3022] robes [4749] were given [1325] unto every one of them [1538]; and [2532] it was said [4483] unto them [846], that [2443] they should rest [373] yet [2089] for a little [3398] season [5550], until [2193] their [846] fellowservants [4889] also [2532] and [2532] their [846] brethren [80], that should [3195] be killed [615] as [5613] [2532] they [846] were, should [3739] be fulfilled [4137].
4 Thou hast [2192] a few [3641] names [3686] even [2532] in [1722] Sardis [4554] which [3739] have [3435] not [3756] defiled [3435] their [846] garments [2440]; and [2532] they shall walk [4043] with [3326] me [1700] in [1722] white [3022]: for [3754] they are [1526] worthy [514].
10 And [2532] hast made [4160] us [2248] unto our [2257] God [2316] kings [935] and [2532] priests [2409]: and [2532] we shall reign [936] on [1909] the earth [1093].
1 Moreover the spirit [07307] lifted me up [05375], and brought [0935] me unto the east [06931] gate [08179] of the LORD'S [03068] house [01004], which looketh [06437] eastward [06921]: and behold at the door [06607] of the gate [08179] five [02568] and twenty [06242] men [0376]; among [08432] whom I saw [07200] Jaazaniah [02970] the son [01121] of Azur [05809], and Pelatiah [06410] the son [01121] of Benaiah [01141], princes [08269] of the people [05971].
16 And he brought [0935] me into the inner [06442] court [02691] of the LORD'S [03068] house [01004], and, behold, at the door [06607] of the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068], between the porch [0197] and the altar [04196], were about five [02568] and twenty [06242] men [0376], with their backs [0268] toward the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068], and their faces [06440] toward the east [06924]; and they worshipped [07812] the sun [08121] toward the east [06924].
13 And [2532] every [3956] creature [2938] which [3739] is [2076] in [1722] heaven [3772], and [2532] on [1722] the earth [1093], and [2532] under [5270] the earth [1093], and [2532] such as [3739] are [2076] in [1909] the sea [2281], and [2532] all [3956] that are in [1722] them [846], heard I [191] saying [3004], Blessing [2129], and [2532] honour [5092], and [2532] glory [1391], and [2532] power [2904], be unto him that sitteth [2521] upon [1909] the throne [2362], and [2532] unto the Lamb [721] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
10 And [2532] hast made [4160] us [2248] unto our [2257] God [2316] kings [935] and [2532] priests [2409]: and [2532] we shall reign [936] on [1909] the earth [1093].
8 And [2532] when [3753] he had taken [2983] the book [975], the four [5064] beasts [2226] and [2532] four [5064] and twenty [1501] elders [4245] fell down [4098] before [1799] the Lamb [721], having [2192] every one of them [1538] harps [2788], and [2532] golden [5552] vials [5357] full [1073] of odours [2368], which [3739] are [1526] the prayers [4335] of saints [40].
9 And [2532] they sung [103] a new [2537] song [5603], saying [3004], Thou art [1488] worthy [514] to take [2983] the book [975], and [2532] to open [455] the seals [4973] thereof [846]: for [3754] thou wast slain [4969], and [2532] hast redeemed [59] us [2248] to God [2316] by [1722] thy [4675] blood [129] out of [1537] every [3956] kindred [5443], and [2532] tongue [1100], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] nation [1484];
9 And [2532] they sung [103] a new [2537] song [5603], saying [3004], Thou art [1488] worthy [514] to take [2983] the book [975], and [2532] to open [455] the seals [4973] thereof [846]: for [3754] thou wast slain [4969], and [2532] hast redeemed [59] us [2248] to God [2316] by [1722] thy [4675] blood [129] out of [1537] every [3956] kindred [5443], and [2532] tongue [1100], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] nation [1484];
1 And [2532] I saw [1492] in [1909] the right hand [1188] of him that sat [2521] on [1909] the throne [2362] a book [975] written [1125] within [2081] and [2532] on the backside [3693], sealed [2696] with seven [2033] seals [4973].
2 And [2532] I saw [1492] a strong [2478] angel [32] proclaiming [2784] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], Who [5101] is [2076] worthy [514] to open [455] the book [975], and [2532] to loose [3089] the seals [4973] thereof [846]?
3 And [2532] no man [3762] in [1722] heaven [3772], nor [3761] in [1909] earth [1093], neither [3761] under [5270] the earth [1093], was able [1410] to open [455] the book [975], neither [3761] to look [991] thereon [846].
4 And [2532] I [1473] wept [2799] much [4183], because [3754] no man [3762] was found [2147] worthy [514] to open [455] and [2532] to read [314] the book [975], neither [3777] to look [991] thereon [846].
5 And [2532] one [1520] of [1537] the elders [4245] saith [3004] unto me [3427], Weep [2799] not [3361]: behold [2400], the Lion [3023] of [5607] [1537] the tribe [5443] of Juda [2455], the Root [4491] of David [1138], hath prevailed [3528] to open [455] the book [975], and [2532] to loose [3089] the seven [2033] seals [4973] thereof [846].
6 And [2532] I beheld [1492], and [2532], lo [2400], in [1722] the midst [3319] of the throne [2362] and [2532] of the four [5064] beasts [2226], and [2532] in [1722] the midst [3319] of the elders [4245], stood [2476] a Lamb [721] as [5613] it had been slain [4969], having [2192] seven [2033] horns [2768] and [2532] seven [2033] eyes [3788], which [3739] are [1526] the seven [2033] Spirits [4151] of God [2316] sent forth [649] into [1519] all [3956] the earth [1093].
7 And [2532] he came [2064] and [2532] took [2983] the book [975] out of [1537] the right hand [1188] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the throne [2362].
9 And [2532] they sung [103] a new [2537] song [5603], saying [3004], Thou art [1488] worthy [514] to take [2983] the book [975], and [2532] to open [455] the seals [4973] thereof [846]: for [3754] thou wast slain [4969], and [2532] hast redeemed [59] us [2248] to God [2316] by [1722] thy [4675] blood [129] out of [1537] every [3956] kindred [5443], and [2532] tongue [1100], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] nation [1484];
10 And [2532] hast made [4160] us [2248] unto our [2257] God [2316] kings [935] and [2532] priests [2409]: and [2532] we shall reign [936] on [1909] the earth [1093].
11 And [2532] I beheld [1492], and [2532] I heard [191] the voice [5456] of many [4183] angels [32] round about [2943] the throne [2362] and [2532] the beasts [2226] and [2532] the elders [4245]: and [2532] the number [706] of them [846] was [2258] ten thousand [3461] times ten thousand [3461], and [2532] thousands [5505] of thousands [5505];
12 Saying [3004] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], Worthy [514] is [2076] the Lamb [721] that was slain [4969] to receive [2983] power [1411], and [2532] riches [4149], and [2532] wisdom [4678], and [2532] strength [2479], and [2532] honour [5092], and [2532] glory [1391], and [2532] blessing [2129].
14 And [2532] the four [5064] beasts [2226] said [3004], Amen [281]. And [2532] the four [5064] and twenty [1501] elders [4245] fell down [4098] and [2532] worshipped [4352] him that liveth [2198] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165].
2 And [2532] immediately [2112] I was [1096] in [1722] the spirit [4151]: and [2532], behold [2400], a throne [2362] was set [2749] in [1722] heaven [3772], and [2532] one sat [2521] on [1909] the throne [2362].
3 And [2532] he that sat [2521] was [2258] to look upon [3706] like [3664] a jasper [2393] and [2532] a sardine [4555] stone [3037]: and [2532] there was a rainbow [2463] round about [2943] the throne [2362], in sight [3706] like [3664] unto an emerald [4664].
4 And [2532] round about [2943] the throne [2362] were four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] seats [2362]: and [2532] upon [1909] the seats [2362] I saw [1492] four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] elders [4245] sitting [2521], clothed [4016] in [1722] white [3022] raiment [2440]; and [2532] they had [2192] on [1909] their [846] heads [2776] crowns [4735] of gold [5552].
10 And [2532] the fifth [3991] angel [32] poured out [1632] his [846] vial [5357] upon [1909] the seat [2362] of the beast [2342]; and [2532] his [846] kingdom [932] was [1096] full of darkness [4656]; and [2532] they gnawed [3145] their [846] tongues [1100] for [1537] pain [4192],
16 And [2532] the four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] elders [4245], which [3588] sat [2521] before [1799] God [2316] on [1909] their [846] seats [2362], fell [4098] upon [1909] their [846] faces [4383], and [2532] worshipped [4352] God [2316],
4 And [2532] round about [2943] the throne [2362] were four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] seats [2362]: and [2532] upon [1909] the seats [2362] I saw [1492] four [5064] and [2532] twenty [1501] elders [4245] sitting [2521], clothed [4016] in [1722] white [3022] raiment [2440]; and [2532] they had [2192] on [1909] their [846] heads [2776] crowns [4735] of gold [5552].
13 I know [1492] thy [4675] works [2041], and [2532] where [4226] thou dwellest [2730], even where [3699] Satan's [4567] seat [2362] is: and [2532] thou holdest fast [2902] my [3450] name [3686], and [2532] hast [720] not [3756] denied [720] my [3450] faith [4102], even [2532] in [1722] those days [2250] wherein [1722] [3739] Antipas [493] was my [3450] faithful [4103] martyr [3144], who [3739] was slain [615] among [3844] you [5213], where [3699] Satan [4567] dwelleth [2730].
52 He hath put down [2507] the mighty [1413] from [575] their seats [2362], and [2532] exalted [5312] them of low degree [5011].
32 He [3778] shall be [2071] great [3173], and [2532] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of the Highest [5310]: and [2532] the Lord [2962] God [2316] shall give [1325] unto him [846] the throne [2362] of his [846] father [3962] David [1138]:
31 When [1161] [3752] the Son [5207] of man [444] shall come [2064] in [1722] his [846] glory [1391], and [2532] all [3956] the holy [40] angels [32] with [3326] him [846], then [5119] shall he sit [2523] upon [1909] the throne [2362] of his [846] glory [1391]:
22 And [2532] he that shall swear [3660] by [1722] heaven [3772], sweareth [3660] by [1722] the throne [2362] of God [2316], and [2532] by [1722] him that sitteth [2521] thereon [1883] [846].
28 And [1161] Jesus [2424] said [2036] unto them [846], Verily [281] I say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] ye [5210] which [3588] have followed [190] me [3427], in [1722] the regeneration [3824] when [3752] the Son [5207] of man [444] shall sit [2523] in [1909] the throne [2362] of his [846] glory [1391], ye [5210] also [2532] shall sit [2523] upon [1909] twelve [1427] thrones [2362], judging [2919] the twelve [1427] tribes [5443] of Israel [2474].
34 But [1161] I [1473] say [3004] unto you [5213], Swear [3660] not [3361] at all [3654]; neither [3383] by [1722] heaven [3772]; for [3754] it is [2076] God's [2316] throne [2362]:
14 And the crowns [05850] shall be to Helem [02494], and to Tobijah [02900], and to Jedaiah [03048], and to Hen [02581] the son [01121] of Zephaniah [06846], for a memorial [02146] in the temple [01964] of the LORD [03068].
11 Then take [03947] silver [03701] and gold [02091], and make [06213] crowns [05850], and set [07760] them upon the head [07218] of Joshua [03091] the son [01121] of Josedech [03087], the high [01419] priest [03548];
26 Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Remove [05493] the diadem [04701], and take off [07311] the crown [05850]: this shall not be the same [02063]: exalt [01361] him that is low [08217], and abase [08213] him that is high [01364].
3 Remember [02142] all thy offerings [04503], and accept [01878] thy burnt sacrifice [05930]; Selah [05542].
2 And David [01732] took [03947] the crown [05850] of their king [04428] from off his head [07218], and found [04672] it to weigh [04948] a talent [03603] of gold [02091], and there were precious [03368] stones [068] in it; and it was set upon David's [01732] head [07218]: and he brought [03318] also exceeding [03966] much [07235] spoil [07998] out of the city [05892].
30 And he took [03947] their king's [04428] crown [05850] from off his head [07218], the weight [04948] whereof was a talent [03603] of gold [02091] with the precious [03368] stones [068]: and it was set on David's [01732] head [07218]. And he brought forth [03318] the spoil [07998] of the city [05892] in great [03966] abundance [07235].
14 And [2532] I looked [1492], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] cloud [3507], and [2532] upon [1909] the cloud [3507] one sat [2521] like [3664] unto the Son [5207] of man [444], having [2192] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] a golden [5552] crown [4735], and [2532] in [1722] his [846] hand [5495] a sharp [3691] sickle [1407].
12 [1161] His [846] eyes [3788] were as [5613] a flame [5395] of fire [4442], and [2532] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] were many [4183] crowns [1238]; and he had [2192] a name [3686] written [1125], that [3739] no man [3762] knew [1492], but [1508] he himself [846].
10 And [2532] there are [1526] seven [2033] kings [935]: five [4002] are fallen [4098], and [2532] one [1520] is [2076], and the other [243] is [2064] not yet [3768] come [2064]; and [2532] when [3752] he cometh [2064], he [846] must [1163] continue [3306] a short space [3641].
9 And here [5602] is the mind [3563] which [3588] hath [2192] wisdom [4678]. The seven [2033] heads [2776] are [1526] seven [2033] mountains [3735], on [1909] which [846] the woman [1135] sitteth [2521] [3699].
1 And [2532] I stood [2476] upon [1909] the sand [285] of the sea [2281], and [2532] saw [1492] a beast [2342] rise up [305] out of [1537] the sea [2281], having [2192] seven [2033] heads [2776] and [2532] ten [1176] horns [2768], and [2532] upon [1909] his [846] horns [2768] ten [1176] crowns [1238], and [2532] upon [1909] his [846] heads [2776] the name [3686] of blasphemy [988].
3 And [2532] there appeared [3700] another [243] wonder [4592] in [1722] heaven [3772]; and [2532] behold [2400] a great [3173] red [4450] dragon [1404], having [2192] seven [2033] heads [2776] and [2532] ten [1176] horns [2768], and [2532] seven [2033] crowns [1238] upon [1909] his [846] heads [2776].
7 And [2532] the shapes [3667] of the locusts [200] were like [3664] unto horses [2462] prepared [2090] unto [1519] battle [4171]; and [2532] on [1909] their [846] heads [2776] were as it were [5613] crowns [4735] like [3664] gold [5557], and [2532] their [846] faces [4383] were as [5613] the faces [4383] of men [444].
12 Blessed [3107] is the man [435] that [3739] endureth [5278] temptation [3986]: for [3754] when he is tried [1384] [1096], he shall receive [2983] the crown [4735] of life [2222], which [3739] the Lord [2962] hath promised [1861] to them that love [25] him [846].
4 And [2532] when the chief Shepherd [750] shall appear [5319], ye shall receive [2865] a crown [4735] of glory [1391] that fadeth not away [262].
5 He that overcometh [3528], the same [3778] shall be clothed [4016] in [1722] white [3022] raiment [2440]; and [2532] I will [1813] not [3364] blot out [1813] his [846] name [3686] out of [1537] the book [976] of life [2222], but [2532] I will confess [1843] his [846] name [3686] before [1799] my [3450] Father [3962], and [2532] before [1799] his [846] angels [32].
23 And [1161] when they had ordained [5500] them [846] elders [4245] in every [2596] church [1577], and had prayed [4336] with [3326] fasting [3521], they commended [3908] them [846] to the Lord [2962], on [1519] whom [3739] they believed [4100].
52 And [2532] the graves [3419] were opened [455]; and [2532] many [4183] bodies [4983] of the saints [40] which [3588] slept [2837] arose [1453],
1 Wherefore [5105] seeing we also [2532] are [2192] compassed about [4029] [2254] with so great [5118] a cloud [3509] of witnesses [3144], let [659] us [2249] lay aside [659] every [3956] weight [3591], and [2532] the sin [266] which doth so easily beset [2139] us, and let us run [5143] with [1223] patience [5281] the race [73] that is set before [4295] us [2254],
23 Then the moon [03842] shall be confounded [02659], and the sun [02535] ashamed [0954], when the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall reign [04427] in mount [02022] Zion [06726], and in Jerusalem [03389], and before his ancients [02205] gloriously [03519].
