Verse         Translation Text
1Th 5:3 Strong Concordance For [1063] when [3752] they shall say [3004], Peace [1515] and [2532] safety [803]; then [5119] sudden [160] destruction [3639] cometh upon [2186] them [846], as [5618] travail [5604] upon [1722] a woman with child [1064] [2192]; and [2532] they shall [1628] not [3364] escape [1628].
King James For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
they--the men of the world. Th1 5:5-6; Th1 4:13, "others," all the rest of the world save Christians.

Peace-- (Jdg 18:7, Jdg 18:9, Jdg 18:27-28; Jer 6:14; Eze 13:10).

then--at the very moment when they least expect it. Compare the case of Belshazzar, Dan 5:1-6, Dan 5:9, Dan 5:26-28; Herod, Act 12:21-23.

sudden--"unawares" (Luk 21:34).

as travail--"As the labor pang" comes in an instant on the woman when otherwise engaged (Psa 48:6; Isa 13:8).

shall not escape--Greek, "shall not at all escape." Another awful feature of their ruin: there shall be then no possibility of shunning it however they desire it (Amo 9:2-3; Rev 6:15-16).

15 And [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] the great men [3175], and [2532] the rich men [4145], and [2532] the chief captains [5506], and [2532] the mighty men [1415], and [2532] every [3956] bondman [1401], and [2532] every [3956] free man [1658], hid [2928] themselves [1438] in [1519] the dens [4693] and [2532] in [1519] the rocks [4073] of the mountains [3735];
16 And [2532] said [3004] to the mountains [3735] and [2532] rocks [4073], Fall [4098] on [1909] us [2248], and [2532] hide [2928] us [2248] from [575] the face [4383] of him that sitteth [2521] on [1909] the throne [2362], and [2532] from [575] the wrath [3709] of the Lamb [721]:
2 Though they dig [02864] into hell [07585], thence shall mine hand [03027] take [03947] them; though they climb up [05927] to heaven [08064], thence will I bring them down [03381]:
3 And though they hide [02244] themselves in the top [07218] of Carmel [03760], I will search [02664] and take them out [03947] thence; and though they be hid [05641] from my sight [05869] in the bottom [07172] of the sea [03220], thence will I command [06680] the serpent [05175], and he shall bite [05391] them:
8 And they shall be afraid [0926]: pangs [06735] and sorrows [02256] shall take hold [0270] of them; they shall be in pain [02342] as a woman that travaileth [03205]: they shall be amazed [08539] one [0376] at another [07453]; their faces [06440] shall be as flames [03851].
6 Fear [07461] took hold [0270] upon them there, and pain [02427], as of a woman in travail [03205].
34 And [1161] take heed [4337] to yourselves [1438], lest at any time [3379] your [5216] hearts [2588] be overcharged [925] with [1722] surfeiting [2897], and [2532] drunkenness [3178], and [2532] cares [3308] of this life [982], and [2532] so that [1565] day [2250] come [2186] upon [1909] you [5209] unawares [160].
21 And [1161] upon a set [5002] day [2250] Herod [2264], arrayed [1746] in royal [937] apparel [2066], sat [2523] upon [1909] his throne [968], and [2532] made an oration [1215] unto [4314] them [846].
22 And [1161] the people [1218] gave a shout [2019], saying, It is the voice [5456] of a god [2316], and [2532] not [3756] of a man [444].
23 And [1161] immediately [3916] the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] smote [3960] him [846], because [473] [3739] he gave [1325] not [3756] God [2316] the glory [1391]: and [2532] he was [1096] eaten of worms [4662], and gave up the ghost [1634].
26 This [01836] is the interpretation [06591] of the thing [04406]: MENE [04484]; God [0426] hath numbered [04483] thy kingdom [04437], and finished [08000] it.
27 TEKEL [08625]; Thou art weighed [08625] in the balances [03977], and art found [07912] wanting [02627].
28 PERES [06537]; Thy kingdom [04437] is divided [06537], and given [03052] to the Medes [04076] and Persians [06540].
9 Then [0116] was king [04430] Belshazzar [01113] greatly [07690] troubled [0927], and his countenance [02122] was changed [08133] in him [05922], and his lords [07261] were astonied [07672].
1 Belshazzar [01113] the king [04430] made [05648] a great [07229] feast [03900] to a thousand [0506] of his lords [07261], and drank [08355] wine [02562] before [06903] the thousand [0506].
2 Belshazzar [01113], whiles he tasted [02942] the wine [02562], commanded [0560] to bring [0858] the golden [01722] and silver [03702] vessels [03984] which his father [02] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] had taken [05312] out of [04481] the temple [01965] which was in Jerusalem [03390]; that the king [04430], and his princes [07261], his wives [07695], and his concubines [03904], might drink [08355] therein.
3 Then [0116] they brought [0858] the golden [01722] vessels [03984] that were taken [05312] out of [04481] the temple [01965] of the house [01005] of God [0426] which was at Jerusalem [03390]; and the king [04430], and his princes [07261], his wives [07695], and his concubines [03904], drank [08355] in them.
4 They drank [08355] wine [02562], and praised [07624] the gods [0426] of gold [01722], and of silver [03702], of brass [05174], of iron [06523], of wood [0636], and of stone [069].
5 In the same hour [08160] came forth [05312] fingers [0677] of a man's [0606] hand [03028], and wrote [03790] over against [06903] the candlestick [05043] upon [05922] the plaister [01528] of the wall [03797] of the king's [04430] palace [01965]: and the king [04430] saw [02370] the part [06447] of the hand [03028] that wrote [03790].
6 Then [0116] the king's [04430] countenance [02122] was changed [08133], and his thoughts [07476] troubled [0927] him, so that the joints [07001] of his loins [02783] were loosed [08271], and his knees [0755] smote [05368] one [01668] against another [01668].
10 Because, even because they have seduced [02937] my people [05971], saying [0559], Peace [07965]; and there was no peace [07965]; and one built up [01129] a wall [02434], and, lo [02009], others daubed [02902] it with untempered [08602] morter:
14 They have healed [07495] also the hurt [07667] of the daughter [01323] of my people [05971] slightly [07043], saying [0559], Peace [07965], peace [07965]; when there is no peace [07965].
27 And they took [03947] the things which Micah [04318] had made [06213], and the priest [03548] which he had, and came [0935] unto Laish [03919], unto a people [05971] that were at quiet [08252] and secure [0982]: and they smote [05221] them with the edge [06310] of the sword [02719], and burnt [08313] the city [05892] with fire [0784].
28 And there was no deliverer [05337], because it was far [07350] from Zidon [06721], and they had no business [01697] with any man [0120]; and it was in the valley [06010] that lieth by Bethrehob [01050]. And they built [01129] a city [05892], and dwelt [03427] therein.
9 And they said [0559], Arise [06965], that we may go up [05927] against them: for we have seen [07200] the land [0776], and, behold, it is very [03966] good [02896]: and are ye still [02814]? be not slothful [06101] to go [03212], and to enter [0935] to possess [03423] the land [0776].
7 Then the five [02568] men [0582] departed [03212], and came [0935] to Laish [03919], and saw [07200] the people [05971] that were therein [07130], how they dwelt [03427] careless [0983], after the manner [04941] of the Zidonians [06722], quiet [08252] and secure [0982]; and there was no magistrate [03423] [06114] in the land [0776], that might put them to shame [03637] in any thing [01697]; and they were far [07350] from the Zidonians [06722], and had no business [01697] with any man [0120].
13 But [1161] I would [2309] not [3756] have [2309] you [5209] to be ignorant [50], brethren [80], concerning [4012] them which are asleep [2837], that [3363] ye sorrow [3076] not [3363], even [2532] as [2531] others [3062] which [3588] have [2192] no [3361] hope [1680].
5 Ye [5210] are [2075] all [3956] the children [5207] of light [5457], and [2532] the children [5207] of the day [2250]: we are [2070] not [3756] of the night [3571], nor [3761] of darkness [4655].
6 Therefore [686] [3767] let us [2518] not [3361] sleep [2518], as [5613] [2532] do others [3062]; but [235] let us watch [1127] and [2532] be sober [3525].
21 What wilt thou say [0559] when he shall punish [06485] thee? for thou hast taught [03925] them to be captains [0441], and as chief [07218] over thee: shall not sorrows [02256] take [0270] thee, as a woman [0802] in travail [03205]?
21 A woman [1135] when [3752] she is in travail [5088] hath [2192] sorrow [3077], because [3754] her [846] hour [5610] is come [2064]: but [1161] as soon as [3752] she is delivered [1080] of the child [3813], she remembereth [3421] no more [3765] the anguish [2347], for [1223] joy [5479] that [3754] a man [444] is born [1080] into [1519] the world [2889].
31 For I have heard [08085] a voice [06963] as of a woman in travail [02470], and the anguish [06869] as of her that bringeth forth her first child [01069], the voice [06963] of the daughter [01323] of Zion [06726], that bewaileth [03306] herself, that spreadeth [06566] her hands [03709], saying, Woe [0188] is me now! for my soul [05315] is wearied [05888] because of murderers [02026].
11 He shall see [07200] of the travail [05999] of his soul [05315], and shall be satisfied [07646]: by his knowledge [01847] shall my righteous [06662] servant [05650] justify [06663] many [07227]; for he shall bear [05445] their iniquities [05771].
9 Now why dost thou cry [07321] out aloud [07452]? is there no king [04428] in thee? is thy counsellor [03289] perished [06]? for pangs [02427] have taken [02388] thee as a woman in travail [03205].
10 Be in pain [02342], and labour to bring forth [01518], O daughter [01323] of Zion [06726], like a woman in travail [03205]: for now shalt thou go forth [03318] out of the city [07151], and thou shalt dwell [07931] in the field [07704], and thou shalt go [0935] even to Babylon [0894]; there shalt thou be delivered [05337]; there the LORD [03068] shall redeem [01350] thee from the hand [03709] of thine enemies [0341].
24 We have heard [08085] the fame [08089] thereof: our hands [03027] wax feeble [07503]: anguish [06869] hath taken hold [02388] of us, and pain [02427], as of a woman in travail [03205].
6 Fear [07461] took hold [0270] upon them there, and pain [02427], as of a woman in travail [03205].
9 But [1161] they that will [1014] be rich [4147] fall [1706] into [1519] temptation [3986] and [2532] a snare [3803], and [2532] into many [4183] foolish [453] and [2532] hurtful [983] lusts [1939], which [3748] drown [1036] men [444] in [1519] destruction [3639] and [2532] perdition [684].
9 Who [3748] shall be punished [1349] [5099] with everlasting [166] destruction [3639] from [575] the presence [4383] of the Lord [2962], and [2532] from [575] the glory [1391] of his [846] power [2479];
5 To deliver [3860] such an one [5108] unto Satan [4567] for [1519] the destruction [3639] of the flesh [4561], that [2443] the spirit [4151] may be saved [4982] in [1722] the day [2250] of the Lord [2962] Jesus [2424].
3 Knowing [1097] this [5124] first [4412], that [3754] there shall come [2064] in [1909] the last [2078] days [2250] scoffers [1703], walking [4198] after [2596] their [846] own [2398] lusts [1939],
4 And [2532] saying [3004], Where [4226] is [2076] the promise [1860] of his [846] coming [3952]? for [1063] since [575] [3739] the fathers [3962] fell asleep [2837], all things [3956] continue [3779] [1265] as they were from [575] the beginning [746] of the creation [2937].
36 But [1161] of [4012] that [1565] day [2250] and [2532] hour [5610] knoweth [1492] no [3762] man, no, not [3761] the angels [32] of heaven [3772], but [1508] my [3450] Father [3962] only [3441].
37 But [1161] as [5618] the days [2250] of Noe [3575] were, so [3779] shall [2071] also [2532] the coming [3952] of the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071].
38 For [1063] as [5618] in [1722] the days [2250] that were [2258] before [4253] the flood [2627] they were eating [5176] and [2532] drinking [4095], marrying [1060] and [2532] giving in marriage [1547], until [891] the day [2250] that [3739] Noe [3575] entered [1525] into [1519] the ark [2787],
39 And [2532] knew [1097] not [3756] until [2193] the flood [2627] came [2064], and [2532] took [142] them all [537] away [142]; so [3779] shall [2071] also [2532] the coming [3952] of the Son [5207] of man [444] be [2071].
40 Then [5119] shall [2071] two [1417] be [2071] in [1722] the field [68]; the one [1520] shall be taken [3880], and [2532] the other [1520] left [863].
41 Two [1417] women shall be grinding [229] at [1722] the mill [3459]; the one [3391] shall be taken [3880], and [2532] the other [3391] left [863].
42 Watch [1127] therefore [3767]: for [3754] ye know [1492] not [3756] what [4169] hour [5610] your [5216] Lord [2962] doth come [2064].
21 What wilt thou say [0559] when he shall punish [06485] thee? for thou hast taught [03925] them to be captains [0441], and as chief [07218] over thee: shall not sorrows [02256] take [0270] thee, as a woman [0802] in travail [03205]?
3 Therefore they shall be as the morning [01242] cloud [06051], and as the early [07925] dew [02919] that passeth away [01980], as the chaff [04671] that is driven with the whirlwind [05590] out of the floor [01637], and as the smoke [06227] out of the chimney [0699].
9 Now why dost thou cry [07321] out aloud [07452]? is there no king [04428] in thee? is thy counsellor [03289] perished [06]? for pangs [02427] have taken [02388] thee as a woman in travail [03205].
3 And they said [0559] unto him, Thus saith [0559] Hezekiah [02396], This day [03117] is a day [03117] of trouble [06869], and of rebuke [08433], and of blasphemy [05007]: for the children [01121] are come [0935] to the birth [04866], and there is not strength [03581] to bring forth [03205].
6 Howl [03213] ye; for the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] is at hand [07138]; it shall come [0935] as a destruction [07701] from the Almighty [07706].
7 Therefore shall all hands [03027] be faint [07503], and every man's [0582] heart [03824] shall melt [04549]:
8 And they shall be afraid [0926]: pangs [06735] and sorrows [02256] shall take hold [0270] of them; they shall be in pain [02342] as a woman that travaileth [03205]: they shall be amazed [08539] one [0376] at another [07453]; their faces [06440] shall be as flames [03851].
24 Whom [3739] God [2316] hath raised up [450], having loosed [3089] the pains [5604] of death [2288]: because [2530] it was [2258] not [3756] possible [1415] that he [846] should be holden [2902] of [5259] it [846].
8 For [1063] nation [1484] shall rise [1453] against [1909] nation [1484], and [2532] kingdom [932] against [1909] kingdom [932]: and [2532] there shall be [2071] earthquakes [4578] in divers [2596] places [5117], and [2532] there shall be [2071] famines [3042] and [2532] troubles [5016]: these [5023] are the beginnings [746] of sorrows [5604].
8 All [1161] [3956] these [5023] are the beginning [746] of sorrows [5604].
7 And [2532], behold [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] came upon [2186] him, and [2532] a light [5457] shined [2989] in [1722] the prison [3612]: and [1161] he smote [3960] Peter [4074] on the side [4125], and raised [1453] him [846] up [1453], saying [3004], Arise up [450] quickly [1722] [5034]. And [2532] his [846] chains [254] fell off [1601] from [1537] his hands [5495].
1 And [1161] as they [846] spake [2980] unto [4314] the people [2992], the priests [2409], and [2532] the captain [4755] of the temple [2411], and [2532] the Sadducees [4523], came upon [2186] them [846],
4 And [2532] it came to pass [1096], as [1722] they [846] were much perplexed [1280] thereabout [4012] [5127], [2532] behold [2400], two [1417] men [435] stood by [2186] them [846] in [1722] shining [797] garments [2067]:
9 And [2532], lo [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] came upon [2186] them [846], and [2532] the glory [1391] of the Lord [2962] shone round about [4034] them [846]: and [2532] they were sore [3173] afraid [5399] [5401].
36 Watch ye [69] therefore [3767], and pray [1189] always [1722] [3956] [2540], that [2443] ye may be accounted worthy [2661] to escape [1628] all [3956] these things [5023] that shall [3195] come to pass [1096], and [2532] to stand [2476] before [1715] the Son [5207] of man [444].
