Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
the evil diseases of Egypt--(See Exo 15:26). Besides those with which Pharaoh and his subjects were visited, Egypt has always been dreadfully scourged with diseases. The testimony of Moses is confirmed by the reports of many modern writers, who tell us that, notwithstanding its equal temperature and sereneness, that country has some indigenous maladies which are very malignant, such as ophthalmia, dysentery, smallpox, and the plague. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
There seems to be here not so much as a reference to the plagues inflicted miraculously by God on Egypt (compare Exo 15:26), as to the terrible diseases with which, above other countries, Egypt was infested. Compare Deu 28:27, Deu 28:35. It is not without significance that Egypt, which represents in Scripture the world as contrasted with the Church, should thus above other lands lie under the power of disease and death. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
The diseases of Egypt - Such as the Egyptians were infected with, either commonly, or miraculously. It seems to refer not only to the plagues of Egypt, but to some other epidemic disease, which they remembered to have prevailed among the Egyptians, and by which God had chastised them for their national sins. Diseases are God's servants, which go where he sends them, and do what he bids them. |

35 The LORD [03068] shall smite [05221] thee in the knees [01290], and in the legs [07785], with a sore [07451] botch [07822] that cannot [03201] be healed [07495], from the sole [03709] of thy foot [07272] unto the top of thy head [06936].
27 The LORD [03068] will smite [05221] thee with the botch [07822] of Egypt [04714], and with the emerods [02914] [06076], and with the scab [01618], and with the itch [02775], whereof thou canst [03201] not be healed [07495].
26 And said [0559], If thou wilt diligently [08085] hearken [08085] to the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], and wilt do [06213] that which is right [03477] in his sight [05869], and wilt give ear [0238] to his commandments [04687], and keep [08104] all his statutes [02706], I will put [07760] none of these diseases [04245] upon thee, which I have brought [07760] upon the Egyptians [04714]: for I am the LORD [03068] that healeth [07495] thee.
