Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
I am the door of the sheep--that is, the way in to the fold, with all blessed privileges, both for shepherds and sheep (compare Joh 14:6; Eph 2:18). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
I am the door - I am the way by which ministers and people enter the true church. It is by his merits, his intercession, his aid, and his appointment that they enter.
Of the sheep - Of the church. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
I am the door of the sheep
The shepherd work of our Lord has three aspects:
(1) As the "Good" Shepherd He gives His life for the sheep (Joh 10:11) and is, therefore, "the door" by which "if any man enter in he shall be saved." (Joh 10:9).
This answers to Psalm 22.
(2) He is the "Great" Shepherd, "brought again from the dead" (Heb 13:20) to care for and make perfect the sheep.
This answers to Psalm 23.
(3) He is the "Chief" Shepherd, who is coming in glory to give crowns of reward to the faithful shepherds (Pe1 5:4).
This answers to Psalm 24. |
Vincent's Word Studies, by Marvin R. Vincent [1886] |
The door of the sheep
Meaning the door for the sheep; not the door of the fold. "The thought is connected with the life, and not simply with the organization." |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
I am the door - Christ is both the Door and the Shepherd, and all things. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
I am the door of the sheep - It is through me only that a man can have a lawful entrance into the ministry; and it is through me alone that mankind can be saved. Instead of, I am the door, the Sahidic version reads, I am the shepherd; but this reading is found in no other version, nor in any MS. It is evidently a mistake of the scribe. |
18 For [3754] through [1223] him [846] we [2192] both [297] have [2192] access [4318] by [1722] one [1520] Spirit [4151] unto [4314] the Father [3962].

4 And [2532] when the chief Shepherd [750] shall appear [5319], ye shall receive [2865] a crown [4735] of glory [1391] that fadeth not away [262].
20 Now [1161] the God [2316] of peace [1515], that brought again [321] from [1537] the dead [3498] our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424], that great [3173] shepherd [4166] of the sheep [4263], through [1722] the blood [129] of the everlasting [166] covenant [1242],
9 I [1473] am [1510] the door [2374]: by [1223] me [1700] if [1437] any man [5100] enter in [1525], he shall be saved [4982], and [2532] shall go in [1525] and [2532] out [1831], and [2532] find [2147] pasture [3542].
11 I [1473] am [1510] the good [2570] shepherd [4166]: the good [2570] shepherd [4166] giveth [5087] his [846] life [5590] for [5228] the sheep [4263].
