Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
And the Word, &c.--To raise the reader to the altitude of this climax were the thirteen foregoing verses written.
was made flesh--BECAME MAN, in man's present frail, mortal condition, denoted by the word "flesh" (Isa 40:6; Pe1 1:24). It is directed probably against the DocetÃ&brvbr;, who held that Christ was not really but only apparently man; against whom this gentle spirit is vehement in his Epistles (Jo1 4:3; Jo2 1:7, Jo2 1:10-11), [LUCKE, &c.]. Nor could He be too much so, for with the verity of the Incarnation all substantial Christianity vanishes. But now, married to our nature, henceforth He is as personally conscious of all that is strictly human as of all that is properly divine; and our nature is in His Person redeemed and quickened, ennobled and transfigured.
and dwelt--tabernacled or pitched his tent; a word peculiar to John, who uses it four times, all in the sense of a permanent stay (Rev 7:15; Rev 12:12; Rev 13:6; Rev 21:3). For ever wedded to our "flesh," He has entered this tabernacle to "go no more out." The allusion is to that tabernacle where dwelt the Shekinah (see on Mat 23:38-39), or manifested "GLORY OF THE LORD," and with reference to God's permanent dwelling among His people (Lev 26:11; Psa 68:18; Psa 132:13-14; Eze 37:27). This is put almost beyond doubt by what immediately follows, "And we beheld his glory" [LUCKE, MEYER, DE WETTE which last critic, rising higher than usual, says that thus were perfected all former partial manifestations of God in an essentially Personal and historically Human manifestation].
full of grace and truth--So it should read: "He dwelt among us full of grace and truth"; or, in Old Testament phrase, "Mercy and truth," denoting the whole fruit of God's purposes of love towards sinners of mankind, which until now existed only in promise, and the fulfilment at length of that promise in Christ; in one great word, "the SURE MERCIES of David" (Isa 55:3; Act 13:34; compare Sa2 23:5). In His Person all that Grace and Truth which had been floating so long in shadowy forms, and darting into the souls of the poor and needy its broken beams, took everlasting possession of human flesh and filled it full. By this Incarnation of Grace and Truth, the teaching of thousands of years was at once transcended and beggared, and the family of God sprang into Manhood.
and we beheld his glory--not by the eye of sense, which saw in Him only "the carpenter." His glory was "spiritually discerned" (Co1 2:7-15; Co2 3:18; Co2 4:4, Co2 4:6; Co2 5:16) --the glory of surpassing grace, love, tenderness, wisdom, purity, spirituality; majesty and meekness, richness and poverty, power and weakness, meeting together in unique contrast; ever attracting and at times ravishing the "babes" that followed and forsook all for Him.
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father--(See on Luk 1:35); not like, but "such as (belongs to)," such as became or was befitting the only begotten of the Father [CHRYSOSTOM in LUCKE, CALVIN, &c.], according to a well-known use of the word "as." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And the Word was made flesh - The word "flesh," here, is evidently used to denote "human nature" or "man." See Mat 16:17; Mat 19:5; Mat 24:22; Luk 3:6; Rom 1:3; Rom 9:5. The "Word" was made "man." This is commonly expressed by saying that he became "incarnate." When we say that a being becomes "incarnate," we mean that one of a higher order than man, and of a different nature, assumes the appearance of man or becomes a man. Here it is meant that "the Word," or the second person of the Trinity, whom John had just proved to be equal with God, became a man, or was united with the man Jesus of Nazareth, so that it might be said that he "was made flesh."
Was made - This is the same word that is used in Joh 1:3; "All things were made by him." It is not simply affirmed that he was flesh, but that he was made flesh, implying that he had pre-existence, agreeably to Joh 1:1. This is in accordance with the doctrine of the Scriptures elsewhere. Heb 10:5; "a 'body' hast thou prepared me." Heb 2:14; "as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same." Jo1 4:2; "Jesus Christ is come in the flesh." See also Ti1 3:16; Phi 2:6; Co2 8:9; Luk 1:35. The expression, then, means that he became a man, and that he became such by the power of God providing for him a body. It cannot mean that the divine nature was "changed" into the human, for that could not be; but it means that the λόγος Logos, or "Word," became so intimately united to Jesus that it might be said that the Logos, or "Word" "became" or "was" a man, as the soul becomes so united to the body that we may say that it is one person or a man.
And dwell among us - The word in the original denotes "dwelt as in a tabernacle or tent;" and some have supposed that John means to say that the human body was a tabernacle or tent for the λόγος Logos to abide in, in allusion to the tabernacle among the Jews, in which the Shechinah, or visible symbol of God, dwelt; but it is not necessary to suppose this. The object of John was to prove that "the Word" became "incarnate." To do this he appeals to various evidences. One was that he "dwelt" among them; sojourned with them; ate, drank, slept, and was with them for years, so that they "saw him with their eyes, they looked upon him, and their hands handled him," Jo1 1:1. To "dwell in a tent with one" is the same as to be in his family; and when John says he "tabernacled" with them, he means that he was with them as a friend and as one of a family, so that they had full opportunity of becoming familiarly acquainted with him, and could not be mistaken in supposing that "he was really a man."
We beheld his glory - This is a new proof of what he was affirming - "that the word of God became man." The first was, that they had seen him as a man. He now adds that they had seen him in his proper glory "as God and man united in one person," constituting him the unequalled Son of the Father. There is no doubt that there is reference here to the transfiguration on the holy mount. See Mat 17:1-9. To this same evidence Peter also appeals, Pe2 1:16-18. John was one of the witnesses of that scene, and hence he says, "we beheld his glory," Mar 9:2. The word "glory" here means majesty, dignity, splendor.
The glory as of the only-begotten of the Father - The dignity which was appropriate to the only-begotten Son of God; such glory or splendor as could belong to no other. and as properly expressed his rank and character. This glory was seen eminently on the mount of transfiguration. It was also seen in his miracles, his doctrine, his resurrection, his ascension; all of which were such as to illustrate the perfections, and manifest the glory that belongs only to the Son of God.
Only-begotten - This term is never applied by John to any but Jesus Christ. It is applied by him five times to the Saviour, Joh 1:14, Joh 1:18; Joh 3:16, Joh 3:18; Jo1 4:9. It means literally an only child. Then, as an only child is especially dear to a parent, it means one that is especially beloved. Compare Gen 22:2, Gen 22:12, Gen 22:16; Jer 6:26; Zac 12:10. On both these accounts it is bestowed on the Saviour.
1. As he was eminently the Son of God, sustaining a special relation to Him in His divine nature, exalted above all human beings and angels, and thus worthy to be called, by way of eminence, His only Son. Saints are called His "sons" or children, because they are born of His Spirit, or are like Him; but the Lord Jesus is exalted far above all, and deserves eminently to be called His only-begotten Son.
2. He was especially dear to God, and therefore this appellation, implying tender affection, is bestowed upon him.
Full of grace and truth - The word "full" here refers to the "Word made flesh," which is declared to be full of grace and truth. The word "grace" means "favors," gifts, acts of beneficence. He was kind, merciful, gracious, doing good to all, and seeking man's welfare by great sacrifices and love; so much so, that it might be said to be characteristic of him, or he "abounded" in favors to mankind. He was also "full of truth." He declared the truth. In him was no falsehood. He was not like the false prophets and false Messiahs, who were wholly impostors; nor was he like the emblems and shadows of the old dispensation, which were only types of the true; but he was truth itself. He represented things as they are, and thus became the "truth" as well as "the way and the life." |
Vincent's Word Studies, by Marvin R. Vincent [1886] |
And the Word (καὶ)
The simple copula as before; not yea, or namely, or therefore, but passing to a new statement concerning the Word.
Was made flesh (σὰρξ ἐγένετο)
Rev., "became flesh." The same verb as in Joh 1:3. All things became through Him; He in turn became flesh. "He became that which first became through Him." In becoming, He did not cease to be the Eternal Word. His divine nature was not laid aside. In becoming flesh He did not part with the rational soul of man. Retaining all the essential properties of the Word, He entered into a new mode of being, not a new being.
The word σὰρξ, flesh, describes this new mode of being. It signifies human nature in and according to its corporal manifestation. Here, as opposed to the purely divine, and to the purely immaterial nature of the Word. He did not first become a personality on becoming flesh. The prologue throughout conceives Him as a personality from the very beginning - from eternal ages. The phrase became flesh, means more than that He assumed a human body. He assumed human nature entire, identifying Himself with the race of man, having a human body, a human soul, and a human spirit. See Joh 12:27; Joh 11:33; Joh 13:21; Joh 19:30. He did not assume, for a time merely, humanity as something foreign to Himself The incarnation was not a mere accident of His substantial being. "He became flesh, and did not clothe Himself in flesh." Compare, on the whole passage, Jo1 4:2; Jo2 1:7.
Dwelt (ἐσκήνωσεν)
Literally, tabernacled, fixed, or had His tabernacle: from σκηνή, a tent or tabernacle. The verb is used only by John: in the Gospel only here, and in Rev 7:15; Rev 12:12; Rev 13:6; Rev 21:3. It occurs in classical writings, as in Xenophon, ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ ἐσκήνου, he pitched his tent in the plain ("Anabasis," vii., 4, 11). So Plato, arguing against the proposition that the unjust die by the inherent destructive power of evil, says that "injustice which murders others keeps the murderer alive - aye, and unsleeping too; οὕτω πόῤῥω του ὡς ἔοικεν ἐσκήνωται τοῦ θανάσιμος εἶναι, i.e., literally, so far has her tent been spread from being a house of death" ("Republic," 610). The figure here is from the Old Testament (Lev 27:11; Sa2 7:6; Psa 78:67 sqq.; Eze 37:27). The tabernacle was the dwelling-place of Jehovah; the meeting-place of God and Israel. So the Word came to men in the person of Jesus. As Jehovah adopted for His habitation a dwelling like that of the people in the wilderness, so the Word assumed a community of nature with mankind, an embodiment like that of humanity at large, and became flesh. "That which was from the beginning, we heard, we saw, we beheld, we handled. Our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ" (Jo1 1:1-3. Compare Phi 2:7, Phi 2:8).
Some find in the word tabernacle, a temporary structure (see the contrast between σκῆνος, tabernacle, and οἰκοδομή, building, in Co2 5:1), a suggestion of the transitoriness of our Lord's stay upon earth; which may well be, although the word does not necessarily imply this; for in Rev 21:3, it is said of the heavenly Jerusalem "the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will set up His tabernacle (σκηνώσει) with them."
Dante alludes to the incarnation in the seventh canto of the "Paradiso:"
- "the human species down below
Lay sick for many centuries in great error,
Till to descend it pleased the Word of God
To where the nature, which from its own Maker
Estranged itself, He joined to Him in person
By the sole act of His eternal love."
Among us (ἐν ἡμῖν)
In the midst of us. Compare Gen 24:3, Sept., "the Canaanites, with whom I dwell (μεθ' ὧν ἐγὼ οἰκῶ ἐν αὐτοῖς)." The reference is to the eyewitnesses of our Lord's life. "According as the spectacle presents itself to the mind of the Evangelist, and in the words among us takes the character of the most personal recollection, it becomes in him the object of a delightful contemplation" (Godet).
The following words, as far as and including Father, are parenthetical. The unbroken sentence is: "The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth."
We beheld (ἐθεασάμεθα)
Compare Luk 9:32; Pe2 2:16; Jo1 1:1; Jo1 4:14. See on Mat 11:7; see on Mat 23:5. The word denotes calm, continuous contemplation of an object which remains before the spectator.
Glory (δόξαν)
Not the absolute glory of the Eternal Word, which could belong only to His pre-existent state, and to the conditions subsequent to his exaltation; but His glory revealed under human limitations both in Himself and in those who beheld Him. The reference is again to the Old Testament manifestations of the divine glory, in the wilderness (Exo 16:10; Exo 24:16, etc.); in the temple (Kg1 8:11); to the prophets (Isa 6:3; Eze 1:28). The divine glory flashed out in Christ from time to time, in His transfiguration (Luk 9:31; compare Pe2 1:16, Pe2 1:17) and His miracles (Joh 2:11; Joh 11:4, Joh 11:40), but appeared also in His perfect life and character, in His fulfillment of the absolute idea of manhood.
Glory
Without the article. This repetition of the word is explanatory. The nature of the glory is defined by what follows.
As (ὡς)
A particle of comparison. Compare Rev 5:6, "a lamb as though it had been slain;" also Rev 13:3.
Of the only begotten of the Father (μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρὸς)
Rev., "from the Father." The glory was like, corresponds in nature to, the glory of an only Son sent from a Father. It was the glory of one who partook of His divine Father's essence; on whom the Father's love was visibly lavished, and who represented the Father as His ambassador. The word μονογενής, only begotten (De Wette and Westcott, "only born") is used in the New Testament of a human relationship (Luk 7:12; Luk 8:42; Luk 9:38). In the Septuagint it answers to darling, Hebrew, only one, in Psalms 21:20, A.V. Psa 22:20; and to desolate in Psalms 24:16, A.V. Psa 25:16. With the exception of the passages cited above, and Heb 11:17, it occurs in the New Testament only in the writings of John, and is used only of Christ. With this word should be compared Paul's πρωτότοκος, first born (Rom 8:29; Col 1:15, Col 1:18), which occurs but once in John (Rev 1:5), and in Heb 1:6; Heb 11:28; Heb 12:23. John's word marks the relation to the Father as unique, stating the fact in itself. Paul's word places the eternal Son in relation to the universe. Paul's word emphasizes His existence before created things; John's His distinctness from created things. Μονογενής distinguishes between Christ as the only Son, and the many children (τέκνα) of God; and further, in that the only Son did not become (γενέσθαι) such by receiving power, by adoption, or by moral generation, but was (ἦν) such in the beginning with God. The fact set forth does not belong to the sphere of His incarnation, but of His eternal being. The statement is anthropomorphic, and therefore cannot fully express the metaphysical relation.
Of the Father is properly rendered by Rev., "from the Father," thus giving the force of παρά (see on from God, Joh 1:6). The preposition does not express the idea of generation, which would be given by ἐκ or by the simple genitive, but of mission - sent from the Father, as John from God (see Joh 6:46; Joh 7:29; Joh 16:27; Joh 17:8). The correlative of this is Joh 1:18, "who is in the bosom (εἰς τὸν κόλπον) of the Father;" literally, "into the bosom," the preposition εἰς signifying who has gone into and is there; thus viewing the Son as having returned to the Father (but see on Joh 1:18).
Full of grace and truth (πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας)
This is connected with the main subject of the sentence: "The Word - full of grace and truth." A common combination in the Old Testament (see Gen 24:27, Gen 24:49; Gen 32:10; Exo 34:6; Psa 40:10, Psa 40:11; Psa 61:7). In these two words the character of the divine revelation is summed up. "Grace corresponds with the idea of the revelation of God as Love (Jo1 4:8, Jo1 4:16) by Him who is Life; and Truth with that of the revelation of God as Light (Jo1 1:5) by Him who is Himself Light" (Westcott). Compare Joh 1:17. On Grace, see on Luk 1:30. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Flesh sometimes signifies corrupt nature; sometimes the body; sometimes, as here, the whole man. We beheld his glory - We his apostles, particularly Peter, James, and John, Luk 9:32. Grace and truth - We are all by nature liars and children of wrath, to whom both grace and truth are unknown. But we are made partakers of them, when we are accepted through the Beloved. The whole verse might be paraphrased thus: And in order to raise us to this dignity and happiness, the eternal Word, by a most amazing condescension, was made flesh, united himself to our miserable nature, with all its innocent infirmities. And he did not make us a transient visit, but tabernacled among us on earth, displaying his glory in a more eminent manner, than even of old in the tabernacle of Moses. And we who are now recording these things beheld his glory with so strict an attention, that we can testify, it was in every respect such a glory as became the only begotten of the Father. For it shone forth not only in his transfiguration, and in his continual miracles, but in all his tempers, ministrations, and conduct through the whole series of his life. In all he appeared full of grace and truth: he was himself most benevolent and upright; made those ample discoveries of pardon to sinners, which the Mosaic dispensation could not do: and really exhibited the most substantial blessings, whereas that was but a shadow of good things to come. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
And the Word was made flesh - That very person who was in the beginning - who was with God - and who was God, Joh 1:1, in the fullness of time became flesh - became incarnated by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the virgin. Allowing this apostle to have written by Divine inspiration, is not this verse, taken in connection with Joh 1:1, an absolute and incontestable proof of the proper and eternal Godhead of Christ Jesus?
And dwelt among us - Και εσκηνωσεν εν ἡμιν, And tabernacled among us: the human nature which he took of the virgin, being as the shrine, house, or temple, in which his immaculate Deity condescended to dwell. The word is probably an allusion to the Divine Shechinah in the Jewish temple; and as God has represented the whole Gospel dispensation by the types and ceremonies of the old covenant, so the Shechinah in the tabernacle and temple pointed out this manifestation of God in the flesh. The word is thus used by the Jewish writers: it signifies with them a manifestation of the Divine Shechinah.
The original word, σκηνοω, from σκια, a shadow, signifies:
1. To build a booth, tent, or temporary hut, for present shelter or convenience; and does not properly signify a lasting habitation or dwelling place; and is therefore fitly applied to the human nature of Christ, which, like the tabernacle of old, was to be here only for a temporary residence for the eternal Divinity.
2. It signifies to erect such a building as was used on festival occasions, when a man invited and enjoyed the company of his friends. To this meaning of the word, which is a common one in the best Greek writers, the evangelist might allude, to point out Christ's associating his disciples with himself; living, conversing, eating, and drinking with them: so that, while they had the fullest proof of his Divinity by the miracles which he wrought, they had the clearest evidence of his humanity, by his tabernacling among, eating, drinking, and conversing with them. Concerning the various acceptations of the verb σκηνοω see Raphelius on this verse.
The doctrine of vicarious sacrifice and the incarnation of the Deity have prevailed among the most ancient nations in the world, and even among those which were not favored with the letter of Divine revelation. The Hindoos believe that their god has already become incarnate, not less than nine times, to save the wretched race of man.
On this subject, Creeshna, an incarnation of the supreme God, according to the Hindoo theology, is represented in the Bhagvat Geeta, as thus addressing one of his disciples: "Although I am not in my nature subject to birth or decay, and am the Lord of all created beings, yet, having command over my own nature, I am made evident by my own power; and, as often as there is a decline of virtue and an insurrection of vice and injustice in the world, I make myself evident; and thus I appear from age to age, for the preservation of the just, the destruction of the wicked, and the establishment of virtue." Geeta, pp. 51, 52.
The following piece, already mentioned, Luk 1:68, translated from the Sanscreet, found on a stone, in a cave near the ancient city of Gya in the East Indies, is the most astonishing and important of any thing found out of the compass of the Sacred Writings, and a proper illustration of this text.
"The Deity, who is the Lord, the possessor of all, Appeared in this ocean of natural beings, at the beginning of the Kalee Yoog (the age of contention and baseness.) He who is omnipresent, and everlastingly to be contemplated, the Supreme Being, the eternal One, the Divinity worthy to be adored - Appeared here, with a Portion of his Divine Nature. Reverence be unto thee in the form of (a) Bood-dha! Reverence be unto the Lord of the earth! Reverence be unto thee, an Incarnation of the Deity, and the Eternal One! Reverence be unto thee, O God! in the form of the God of mercy! the dispeller of Pain and Trouble, the Lord of All things, the Deity who overcometh the sins of the Kalee Yoog, the guardian of the universe, the emblem of mercy towards those who serve thee! (b) O'M! the possessor of all things, in Vital Form! Thou art (c) Brahma, (d) Veeshnoo, and (e) Mahesa! Thou art Lord of the universe! Thou art under the form of all things, movable and immovable, the possessor of the whole! And thus I adore thee! Reverence be unto the Bestower of Salvation, and the ruler of the faculties! Reverence be unto thee, the Destroyer of the Evil Spirit! O Damordara, (f) show me favor! I adore thee who art celebrated by a thousand names, and under various forms, in the shape of Bood-dha, the God of mercy! Be propitious, O most high God!" Asiatic Researches, vol. i. p. 284, 285.
(a) Bood-dha. The name of the Deity, as author of happiness.
(b) O'M. A mystic emblem of the Deity, forbidden to be pronounced but in silence. It is a syllable formed of the Sanscreet letters a, o o, which in composition coalesce, and make o, and the nasal consonant m. The first letter stands for the Creator, the second for the Preserver, and the third for the Destroyer. It is the same among the Hindoos as יהוה Yehovah is among the Hebrews.
(c) Brahma, the Deity in his creative quality.
(d) Veeshnoo. He who filleth all space: the Deity in his preserving quality.
(c) Mahesa. The Deity in his destroying quality. This is properly the Hindoo Trinity: for these three names belong to the same God. See the notes to the Bhagvat Geeta.
(f) Damordara, or Darmadeve, the Indian god of virtue.
We beheld his glory - This refers to the transfiguration, at which John was present, in company with Peter and James.
The glory as of the only begotten - That is, such a glory as became, or was proper to, the Son of God; for thus the particle ὡς should be here understood. There is also here an allusion to the manifestations of God above the ark in the tabernacle: see Exo 25:22; Num 7:89; and this connects itself with the first clause, he tabernacled, or fixed his tent among us. While God dwelt in the tabernacle, among the Jews, the priests saw his glory; and while Jesus dwelt among men his glory was manifested in his gracious words and miraculous acts.
The only begotten of the Father - That is, the only person born of a woman, whose human nature never came by the ordinary way of generation; it being a mere creation in the womb of the virgin, by the energy of the Holy Ghost.
Full of grace and truth - Full of favor, kindness, and mercy to men; teaching the way to the kingdom of God, with all the simplicity, plainness, dignity, and energy of truth. |
35 And [2532] the angel [32] answered [611] and said [2036] unto her [846], The Holy [40] Ghost [4151] shall come [1904] upon [1909] thee [4571], and [2532] the power [1411] of the Highest [5310] shall overshadow [1982] thee [4671]: therefore [1352] also [2532] that holy thing [40] which shall be born [1080] of [1537] thee [4675] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of God [2316].
16 Wherefore [5620] henceforth [575] [3568] know [1492] we [2249] no man [3762] after [2596] the flesh [4561]: yea [1161], though [1499] we have known [1097] Christ [5547] after [2596] the flesh [4561], yet [235] now [3568] henceforth [3765] know we [1097] him no more [3765].
6 For [3754] God [2316], who [3588] commanded [2036] the light [5457] to shine [2989] out of [1537] darkness [4655], [3739] hath shined [2989] in [1722] our [2257] hearts [2588], to [4314] give the light [5462] of the knowledge [1108] of the glory [1391] of God [2316] in [1722] the face [4383] of Jesus [2424] Christ [5547].
4 In [1722] whom [3739] the god [2316] of this [5127] world [165] hath blinded [5186] the minds [3540] of them which believe not [571], lest [1519] [3361] the light [5462] of the glorious [1391] gospel [2098] of Christ [5547], who [3739] is [2076] the image [1504] of God [2316], should shine [826] unto them [846].
18 But [1161] we [2249] all [3956], with open [343] face [4383] beholding as in a glass [2734] the glory [1391] of the Lord [2962], are changed [3339] into the same [846] image [1504] from [575] glory [1391] to [1519] glory [1391], even as [2509] by [575] the Spirit [4151] of the Lord [2962].
7 But [235] we speak [2980] the wisdom [4678] of God [2316] in [1722] a mystery [3466], even the hidden [613] wisdom, which [3739] God [2316] ordained [4309] before [4253] the world [165] unto [1519] our [2257] glory [1391]:
8 Which [3739] none [3762] of the princes [758] of this [5127] world [165] knew [1097]: for [1487] [1063] had they known [1097] it, they [302] would [4717] not [3756] have crucified [4717] the Lord [2962] of glory [1391].
9 But [235] as [2531] it is written [1125], [3739] Eye [3788] hath [1492] not [3756] seen [1492], nor [2532] [3756] ear [3775] heard [191], neither [2532] [3756] have entered [305] into [1909] the heart [2588] of man [444], the things which [3739] God [2316] hath prepared [2090] for them that love [25] him [846].
10 But [1161] God [2316] hath revealed [601] them unto us [2254] by [1223] his [846] Spirit [4151]: for [1063] the Spirit [4151] searcheth [2045] all things [3956], yea [2532], the deep things [899] of God [2316].
11 For [1063] what [5101] man [444] knoweth [1492] the things [3588] of a man [444], save [1508] the spirit [4151] of man [444] which [3588] is in [1722] him [846]? even [2532] so [3779] the things [3588] of God [2316] knoweth [1492] no man [3762], but [1508] the Spirit [4151] of God [2316].
12 Now [1161] we [2249] have received [2983], not [3756] the spirit [4151] of the world [2889], but [235] the spirit [4151] which [3588] is of [1537] God [2316]; that [2443] we might know [1492] the things that are freely given [5483] to us [2254] of [5259] God [2316].
13 Which things [3739] also [2532] we speak [2980], not [3756] in [1722] the words [3056] which man's [442] wisdom [4678] teacheth [1318], but [235] which the Holy [40] Ghost [4151] teacheth [1722] [1318]; comparing [4793] spiritual things [4152] with spiritual [4152].
14 But [1161] the natural [5591] man [444] receiveth [1209] not [3756] the things [3588] of the Spirit [4151] of God [2316]: for [1063] they are [2076] foolishness [3472] unto him [846]: neither [2532] [3756] can [1410] he know [1097] them, because [3754] they are spiritually [4153] discerned [350].
15 But [1161] he that is spiritual [4152] judgeth [350] [3303] all things [3956], yet [1161] he himself [846] is judged [350] of [5259] no man [3762].
5 Although my house [01004] be not so with God [0410]; yet he hath made [07760] with me an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285], ordered [06186] in all things, and sure [08104]: for this is all my salvation [03468], and all my desire [02656], although he make it not to grow [06779].
34 And [1161] as concerning that [3754] he raised [450] him [846] up [450] from [1537] the dead [3498], now no more [3371] to [3195] return [5290] to [1519] corruption [1312], he said [2046] on this wise [3779], [3754] I will give [1325] you [5213] the sure [4103] mercies [3741] of David [1138].
3 Incline [05186] your ear [0241], and come [03212] unto me: hear [08085], and your soul [05315] shall live [02421]; and I will make [03772] an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285] with you, even the sure [0539] mercies [02617] of David [01732].
27 My tabernacle [04908] also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God [0430], and they shall be my people [05971].
13 For the LORD [03068] hath chosen [0977] Zion [06726]; he hath desired [0183] it for his habitation [04186].
14 This is my rest [04496] for ever [05703]: here will I dwell [03427]; for I have desired [0183] it.
18 Thou hast ascended [05927] on high [04791], thou hast led captivity [07628] captive [07617]: thou hast received [03947] gifts [04979] for men [0120]; yea, for the rebellious [05637] also, that the LORD [03050] God [0430] might dwell [07931] among them.
11 And I will set [05414] my tabernacle [04908] among [08432] you: and my soul [05315] shall not abhor [01602] you.
38 Behold [2400], your [5216] house [3624] is left [863] unto you [5213] desolate [2048].
39 For [1063] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Ye shall [1492] not [3364] see [1492] me [3165] henceforth [575] [737], till [2193] [302] ye shall say [2036], Blessed [2127] is he that cometh [2064] in [1722] the name [3686] of the Lord [2962].
3 And [2532] I heard [191] a great [3173] voice [5456] out of [1537] heaven [3772] saying [3004], Behold [2400], the tabernacle [4633] of God [2316] is with [3326] men [444], and [2532] he will dwell [4637] with [3326] them [846], and [2532] they [846] shall be [2071] his [846] people [2992], and [2532] God [2316] himself [846] shall be [2071] with [3326] them [846], and be their [846] God [2316].
6 And [2532] he opened [455] his [846] mouth [4750] in [1519] blasphemy [988] against [4314] God [2316], to blaspheme [987] his [846] name [3686], and [2532] his [846] tabernacle [4633], and [2532] them that dwell [4637] in [1722] heaven [3772].
12 Therefore [1223] [5124] rejoice [2165], ye heavens [3772], and [2532] ye that dwell [4637] in [1722] them [846]. Woe [3759] to the inhabiters [2730] of the earth [1093] and [2532] of the sea [2281]! for [3754] the devil [1228] is come down [2597] unto [4314] you [5209], having [2192] great [3173] wrath [2372], because he knoweth [1492] that [3754] he hath [2192] but a short [3641] time [2540].
15 Therefore [1223] [5124] are they [1526] before [1799] the throne [2362] of God [2316], and [2532] serve [3000] him [846] day [2250] and [2532] night [3571] in [1722] his [846] temple [3485]: and [2532] he that sitteth [2521] on [1909] the throne [2362] shall dwell [4637] among [1909] them [846].
10 If [1536] there come [2064] any [1536] [5100] unto [4314] you [5209], and [2532] bring [5342] not [3756] this [5026] doctrine [1322], receive [2983] him [846] not [3361] into [1519] your house [3614], neither [2532] [3361] bid [3004] him [846] God speed [5463]:
11 For [1063] he that biddeth [3004] him [846] God speed [5463] is partaker [2841] of his [846] evil [4190] deeds [2041].
7 For [3754] many [4183] deceivers [4108] are entered [1525] into [1519] the world [2889], who [3588] confess [3670] not [3361] that Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] is come [2064] in [1722] the flesh [4561]. This [3778] is [2076] a deceiver [4108] and [2532] an antichrist [500].
3 And [2532] every [3956] spirit [4151] that [3739] confesseth [3670] not [3361] that Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] is come [2064] in [1722] the flesh [4561] is [2076] not [3756] of [1537] God [2316]: and [2532] this [5124] is [2076] that spirit of antichrist [500], whereof [3739] ye have heard [191] that [3754] it should come [2064]; and even [2532] now [3568] already [2235] is it [2076] in [1722] the world [2889].
24 For [1360] all [3956] flesh [4561] is as [5613] grass [5528], and [2532] all [3956] the glory [1391] of man [444] as [5613] the flower [438] of grass [5528]. The grass [5528] withereth [3583], and [2532] the flower [438] thereof [846] falleth away [1601]:
6 The voice [06963] said [0559], Cry [07121]. And he said [0559], What shall I cry [07121]? All flesh [01320] is grass [02682], and all the goodliness [02617] thereof is as the flower [06731] of the field [07704]:
10 And I will pour [08210] upon the house [01004] of David [01732], and upon the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389], the spirit [07307] of grace [02580] and of supplications [08469]: and they shall look [05027] upon me whom they have pierced [01856], and they shall mourn [04553] for him, as one mourneth [05594] for his only [03173] son, and shall be in bitterness [04843] for him, as one that is in bitterness [04843] for his firstborn [01060].
26 O daughter [01323] of my people [05971], gird [02296] thee with sackcloth [08242], and wallow [06428] thyself in ashes [0665]: make [06213] thee mourning [060], as for an only son [03173], most bitter [08563] lamentation [04553]: for the spoiler [07703] shall suddenly [06597] come [0935] upon us.
16 And said [0559], By myself have I sworn [07650], saith [05002] the LORD [03068], for because [03282] [0834] thou hast done [06213] this thing [01697], and hast not [03808] withheld [02820] thy son [01121], thine only [03173] son:
12 And he said [0559], Lay [07971] not thine hand [03027] upon [0413] the lad [05288], neither do thou [06213] any thing [03972] unto him: for now [06258] I know [03045] that thou fearest [03373] God [0430], seeing thou hast not [03808] withheld [02820] thy son [01121], thine only [03173] son from me.
2 And he said [0559], Take now [03947] thy son [01121], thine only [03173] son Isaac [03327], whom thou lovest [0157], and get thee [03212] into the land [0776] of Moriah [04179]; and offer him [05927] there for a burnt offering [05930] upon one [0259] of the mountains [02022] which I will tell [0559] thee of.
9 In [1722] this [5129] was manifested [5319] the love [26] of God [2316] toward [1722] us [2254], because [3754] that God [2316] sent [649] his [846] only begotten [3439] Son [5207] into [1519] the world [2889], that [2443] we might live [2198] through [1223] him [846].
18 He that believeth [4100] on [1519] him [846] is [2919] not [3756] condemned [2919]: but [1161] he that believeth [4100] not [3361] is condemned [2919] already [2235], because [3754] he hath [4100] not [3361] believed [4100] in [1519] the name [3686] of the only begotten [3439] Son [5207] of God [2316].
16 For [1063] God [2316] so [3779] loved [25] the world [2889], that [5620] he gave [1325] his [846] only begotten [3439] Son [5207], that [2443] whosoever [3956] believeth [4100] in [1519] him [846] should [622] not [3361] perish [622], but [235] have [2192] everlasting [166] life [2222].
18 No man [3762] hath seen [3708] God [2316] at any time [4455]; the only begotten [3439] Son [5207], which [3588] is [5607] in [1519] the bosom [2859] of the Father [3962], he [1565] hath declared [1834] him.
14 And [2532] the Word [3056] was made [1096] flesh [4561], and [2532] dwelt [4637] among [1722] us [2254], (and [2532] we beheld [2300] his [846] glory [1391], the glory [1391] as [5613] of the only begotten [3439] of [3844] the Father [3962],) full [4134] of grace [5485] and [2532] truth [225].
2 And [2532] after [3326] six [1803] days [2250] Jesus [2424] taketh [3880] with him Peter [4074], and [2532] James [2385], and [2532] John [2491], and [2532] leadeth [399] them [846] up [399] into [1519] an high [5308] mountain [3735] apart [2596] [2398] by themselves [3441]: and [2532] he was transfigured [3339] before [1715] them [846].
16 For [1063] we have [1811] not [3756] followed [1811] cunningly devised [4679] fables [3454], when we made known [1107] unto you [5213] the power [1411] and [2532] coming [3952] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], but [235] were [1096] eyewitnesses [2030] of his [1565] majesty [3168].
17 For [1063] he received [2983] from [3844] God [2316] the Father [3962] honour [5092] and [2532] glory [1391], when there came [5342] such [5107] a voice [5456] to him [846] from [5259] the excellent [3169] glory [1391], This [3778] is [2076] my [3450] beloved [27] Son [5207], in [1519] whom [3739] I [1473] am well pleased [2106].
18 And [2532] this [5026] voice [5456] which came [5342] from [1537] heaven [3772] we [2249] heard [191], when we were [5607] with [4862] him [846] in [1722] the holy [40] mount [3735].
1 And [2532] after [3326] six [1803] days [2250] Jesus [2424] taketh [3880] Peter [4074] [2532], James [2385], and [2532] John [2491] his [846] brother [80], and [2532] bringeth [399] them [846] up [399] into [1519] an high [5308] mountain [3735] apart [2596] [2398],
2 And [2532] was transfigured [3339] before [1715] them [846]: and [2532] his [846] face [4383] did shine [2989] as [5613] the sun [2246], and [1161] his [846] raiment [2440] was [1096] white [3022] as [5613] the light [5457].
3 And [2532], behold [2400], there appeared [3700] unto them [846] Moses [3475] and [2532] Elias [2243] talking [4814] with [3326] him [846].
4 Then [1161] answered [611] Peter [4074], and said [2036] unto Jesus [2424], Lord [2962], it is [2076] good [2570] for us [2248] to be [1511] here [5602]: if [1487] thou wilt [2309], let us make [4160] here [5602] three [5140] tabernacles [4633]; one [3391] for thee [4671], and [2532] one [3391] for Moses [3475], and [2532] one [3391] for Elias [2243].
5 While he [846] yet [2089] spake [2980], behold [2400], a bright [5460] cloud [3507] overshadowed [1982] them [846]: and [2532] behold [2400] a voice [5456] out of [1537] the cloud [3507], which said [3004], This [3778] is [2076] my [3450] beloved [27] Son [5207], in [1722] whom [3739] I am well pleased [2106]; hear ye [191] him [846].
6 And [2532] when the disciples [3101] heard [191] it, they fell [4098] on [1909] their [846] face [4383], and [2532] were sore [4970] afraid [5399].
7 And [2532] Jesus [2424] came [4334] and touched [680] them [846], and [2532] said [2036], Arise [1453], and [2532] be [5399] not [3361] afraid [5399].
8 And [1161] when they had lifted up [1869] their [846] eyes [3788], they saw [1492] no man [3762], save [1508] Jesus [2424] only [3441].
9 And [2532] as they [846] came down [2597] from [575] the mountain [3735], Jesus [2424] charged [1781] them [846], saying [3004], Tell [2036] the vision [3705] to no man [3367], until [2193] [3739] the Son [5207] of man [444] be risen again [450] from [1537] the dead [3498].
1 That which [3739] was [2258] from [575] the beginning [746], which [3739] we have heard [191], which [3739] we have seen [3708] with our [2257] eyes [3788], which [3739] we have looked upon [2300], and [2532] our [2257] hands [5495] have handled [5584], of [4012] the Word [3056] of life [2222];
35 And [2532] the angel [32] answered [611] and said [2036] unto her [846], The Holy [40] Ghost [4151] shall come [1904] upon [1909] thee [4571], and [2532] the power [1411] of the Highest [5310] shall overshadow [1982] thee [4671]: therefore [1352] also [2532] that holy thing [40] which shall be born [1080] of [1537] thee [4675] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of God [2316].
9 For [1063] ye know [1097] the grace [5485] of our [2257] Lord [2962] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], that [3754], though he was [5607] rich [4145], yet for [1223] your [5209] sakes [1223] he became poor [4433], that [2443] ye [5210] through his [1565] poverty [4432] might be rich [4147].
6 Who [3739], being [5225] in [1722] the form [3444] of God [2316], thought it [2233] not [3756] robbery [725] to be [1511] equal [2470] with God [2316]:
16 And [2532] without controversy [3672] great [3173] is [2076] the mystery [3466] of godliness [2150]: God [2316] was manifest [5319] in [1722] the flesh [4561], justified [1344] in [1722] the Spirit [4151], seen [3700] of angels [32], preached [2784] unto [1722] the Gentiles [1484], believed on [4100] in [1722] the world [2889], received up [353] into [1722] glory [1391].
2 Hereby [1722] [3739] [5129] know ye [1097] the Spirit [4151] of God [2316]: Every [3956] spirit [4151] that confesseth [3670] that Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] is come [2064] in [1722] the flesh [4561] is [2076] of [1537] God [2316]:
14 Forasmuch [1893] then [3767] as the children [3813] are partakers [2841] of flesh [4561] and [2532] blood [129], he [3348] also [2532] himself [846] likewise [3898] took part [3348] of the same [846]; that [2443] through [1223] death [2288] he might destroy [2673] him that had [2192] the power [2904] of death [2288], that is [5123], the devil [1228];
5 Wherefore [1352] when he cometh [1525] into [1519] the world [2889], he saith [3004], Sacrifice [2378] and [2532] offering [4376] thou wouldest [2309] not [3756], but [1161] a body [4983] hast thou prepared [2675] me [3427]:
1 In [1722] the beginning [746] was [2258] the Word [3056], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] with [4314] God [2316], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] God [2316].
3 All things [3956] were made [1096] by [1223] him [846]; and [2532] without [5565] him [846] was [1096] not [3761] any thing [1520] made [1096] that [3739] was made [1096].
5 Whose [3739] are the fathers [3962], and [2532] of [1537] whom [3739] as concerning [2596] the flesh [4561] Christ [5547] came, who [5607] is over [1909] all [3956], God [2316] blessed [2128] for [1519] ever [165]. Amen [281].
3 Concerning [4012] his [846] Son [5207] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547] our [2257] Lord [2962], which [3588] was made [1096] of [1537] the seed [4690] of David [1138] according [2596] to the flesh [4561];
6 And [2532] all [3956] flesh [4561] shall see [3700] the salvation [4992] of God [2316].
22 And [2532] except [1508] those [1565] days [2250] should be shortened [2856], there [3756] should [302] no [3956] flesh [4561] be saved [4982]: but [1161] for [1223] the elect's sake [1588] those [1565] days [2250] shall be shortened [2856].
5 And [2532] said [2036], For this [5127] cause [1752] shall a man [444] leave [2641] father [3962] and [2532] mother [3384], and [2532] shall cleave [4347] to his [846] wife [1135]: and [2532] they twain [1417] shall be [2071] [1519] one [3391] flesh [4561]?
17 And [2532] Jesus [2424] answered [611] and said [2036] unto him [846], Blessed [3107] art thou [1488], Simon [4613] Barjona [920]: for [3754] flesh [4561] and [2532] blood [129] hath [601] not [3756] revealed [601] it unto thee [4671], but [235] my [3450] Father [3962] which [3588] is in [1722] heaven [3772].
30 And [2532] the angel [32] said [2036] unto her [846], Fear [5399] not [3361], Mary [3137]: for [1063] thou hast found [2147] favour [5485] with [3844] God [2316].
17 For [3754] the law [3551] was given [1325] by [1223] Moses [3475], but grace [5485] and [2532] truth [225] came [1096] by [1223] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547].
5 This [3778] then [2532] is [2076] the message [1860] which [3739] we have heard [191] of [575] him [846], and [2532] declare [312] unto you [5213], that [3754] God [2316] is [2076] light [5457], and [2532] in [1722] him [846] is [2076] no [3756] darkness [4653] at all [3762].
16 And [2532] we [2249] have known [1097] and [2532] believed [4100] the love [26] that [3739] God [2316] hath [2192] to [1722] us [2254]. God [2316] is [2076] love [26]; and [2532] he that dwelleth [3306] in [1722] love [26] dwelleth [3306] in [1722] God [2316], and [2532] God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
8 He that loveth [25] not [3361] knoweth [1097] not [3756] God [2316]; for [3754] God [2316] is [2076] love [26].
7 He shall abide [03427] before [06440] God [0430] for ever [05769]: O prepare [04487] mercy [02617] and truth [0571], which may preserve [05341] him.
11 Withhold [03607] not thou thy tender mercies [07356] from me, O LORD [03068]: let thy lovingkindness [02617] and thy truth [0571] continually [08548] preserve [05341] me.
10 I have not hid [03680] thy righteousness [06666] within [08432] my heart [03820]; I have declared [0559] thy faithfulness [0530] and thy salvation [08668]: I have not concealed [03582] thy lovingkindness [02617] and thy truth [0571] from the great [07227] congregation [06951].
6 And the LORD [03068] passed by [05674] before him [06440], and proclaimed [07121], The LORD [03068], The LORD [03068] God [0410], merciful [07349] and gracious [02587], longsuffering [0750] [0639], and abundant [07227] in goodness [02617] and truth [0571],
10 I am not worthy of the least [06994] of all the mercies [02617], and of all the truth [0571], which thou hast shewed [06213] unto thy servant [05650]; for with my staff [04731] I passed over [05674] this Jordan [03383]; and now I am become two [08147] bands [04264].
49 And now if ye will [03426] deal [06213] kindly [02617] and truly [0571] with my master [0113], tell [05046] me: and if not, tell [05046] me; that I may turn [06437] to the right hand [03225], or [0176] to the left [08040].
27 And he said [0559], Blessed [01288] be the LORD [03068] God [0430] of my master [0113] Abraham [085], who hath not left destitute [05800] [05973] my master [0113] of his mercy [02617] and his truth [0571]: I being in the way [01870], the LORD [03068] led me [05148] to the house [01004] of my master's [0113] brethren [0251].
18 No man [3762] hath seen [3708] God [2316] at any time [4455]; the only begotten [3439] Son [5207], which [3588] is [5607] in [1519] the bosom [2859] of the Father [3962], he [1565] hath declared [1834] him.
18 No man [3762] hath seen [3708] God [2316] at any time [4455]; the only begotten [3439] Son [5207], which [3588] is [5607] in [1519] the bosom [2859] of the Father [3962], he [1565] hath declared [1834] him.
8 For [3754] I have given [1325] unto them [846] the words [4487] which [3739] thou gavest [1325] me [3427]; and [2532] they [846] have received [2983] them, and [2532] have known [1097] surely [230] that [3754] I came out [1831] from [3844] thee [4675], and [2532] they have believed [4100] that [3754] thou [4771] didst send [649] me [3165].
27 For [1063] the Father [3962] himself [846] loveth [5368] you [5209], because [3754] ye [5210] have loved [5368] me [1691], and [2532] have believed [4100] that [3754] I [1473] came out [1831] from [3844] God [2316].
29 But [1161] I [1473] know [1492] him [846]: for [3754] I am [1510] from [3844] him [846], and he [2548] hath sent [649] me [3165].
46 Not [3756] that [3754] any man [5100] hath seen [3708] the Father [3962], save [1508] he which [3588] is [3844] [5607] of God [2316], he [3778] hath seen [3708] the Father [3962].
6 There was [1096] a man [444] sent [649] from [3844] God [2316], whose [846] name [3686] was John [2491].
23 To the general assembly [3831] and [2532] church [1577] of the firstborn [4416], which are written [583] in [1722] heaven [3772], and [2532] to God [2316] the Judge [2923] of all [3956], and [2532] to the spirits [4151] of just men [1342] made perfect [5048],
28 Through faith [4102] he kept [4160] the passover [3957], and [2532] the sprinkling [4378] of blood [129], lest [3363] he that destroyed [3645] the firstborn [4416] should touch [2345] them [846].
6 And [1161] again [3825], when [3752] he bringeth in [1521] the firstbegotten [4416] into [1519] the world [3625], he saith [3004], And [2532] let [4352] all [3956] the angels [32] of God [2316] worship [4352] him [846].
5 And [2532] from [575] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547], who is the faithful [4103] witness [3144], and the first begotten [4416] of [1537] the dead [3498], and [2532] the prince [758] of the kings [935] of the earth [1093]. Unto him that loved [25] us [2248], and [2532] washed [3068] us [2248] from [575] our [2257] sins [266] in [1722] his own [846] blood [129],
18 And [2532] he [846] is [2076] the head [2776] of the body [4983], the church [1577]: who [3739] is [2076] the beginning [746], the firstborn [4416] from [1537] the dead [3498]; that [2443] in [1722] all [3956] things he [846] might have [1096] the preeminence [4409].
15 Who [3739] is [2076] the image [1504] of the invisible [517] God [2316], the firstborn [4416] of every [3956] creature [2937]:
29 For [3754] whom [3739] he did foreknow [4267], he [4309] also [2532] did predestinate [4309] to be conformed [4832] to the image [1504] of his [846] Son [5207], that [1519] he [846] might be [1511] the firstborn [4416] among [1722] many [4183] brethren [80].
17 By faith [4102] Abraham [11], when he was tried [3985], offered up [4374] Isaac [2464]: and [2532] he that had received [324] the promises [1860] offered up [4374] his only begotten [3439] son,
16 Turn [06437] thee unto me, and have mercy [02603] upon me; for I am desolate [03173] and afflicted [06041].
20 Deliver [05337] my soul [05315] from the sword [02719]; my darling [03173] from the power [03027] of the dog [03611].
38 And, [2532] behold [2400], a man [435] of [575] the company [3793] cried out [310], saying [3004], Master [1320], I beseech [1189] thee [4675], look [1914] upon [1909] my [3450] son [5207]: for [3754] he is [2076] mine [3427] only child [3439].
42 For [3754] he [846] had [2258] one only [3439] daughter [2364], about [5613] twelve [1427] years of age [2094], and [2532] she [3778] [846] lay a dying [599]. But [1161] as [1722] he [846] went [5217] the people [3793] thronged [4846] him [846].
12 Now [1161] when [5613] he came nigh [1448] to the gate [4439] of the city [4172], behold [2532] [2400], there was [1580] a dead man [2348] carried out [1580], the only [3439] son [5207] of his [846] mother [3384], and [2532] she [846] was [2258] a widow [5503]: and [2532] much [2425] people [3793] of the city [4172] was [2258] with [4862] her [846].
3 And [2532] I saw [1492] one [3391] of his [846] heads [2776] as it were [5613] wounded [4969] to [1519] death [2288]; and [2532] his [846] deadly [2288] wound [4127] was healed [2323]: and [2532] all [3650] the world [1093] wondered [2296] [2296] after [3694] [1722] the beast [2342].
6 And [2532] I beheld [1492], and [2532], lo [2400], in [1722] the midst [3319] of the throne [2362] and [2532] of the four [5064] beasts [2226], and [2532] in [1722] the midst [3319] of the elders [4245], stood [2476] a Lamb [721] as [5613] it had been slain [4969], having [2192] seven [2033] horns [2768] and [2532] seven [2033] eyes [3788], which [3739] are [1526] the seven [2033] Spirits [4151] of God [2316] sent forth [649] into [1519] all [3956] the earth [1093].
40 Jesus [2424] saith [3004] unto her [846], Said I [2036] not [3756] unto thee [4671], that [3754], if [1437] thou wouldest believe [4100], thou shouldest see [3700] the glory [1391] of God [2316]?
4 When [1161] Jesus [2424] heard [191] that, he said [2036], This [3778] sickness [769] is [2076] not [3756] unto [4314] death [2288], but [235] for [5228] the glory [1391] of God [2316], that [2443] the Son [5207] of God [2316] might be glorified [1392] thereby [1223] [846].
11 This [5026] beginning [746] of miracles [4592] did [4160] Jesus [2424] in [1722] Cana [2580] of Galilee [1056], and [2532] manifested forth [5319] his [846] glory [1391]; and [2532] his [846] disciples [3101] believed [4100] on [1519] him [846].
31 Who [3739] appeared [3700] in [1722] glory [1391], and spake [3004] of his [846] decease [1841] which [3739] he should [3195] accomplish [4137] at [1722] Jerusalem [2419].
28 As the appearance [04758] of the bow [07198] that is in the cloud [06051] in the day [03117] of rain [01653], so was the appearance [04758] of the brightness [05051] round about [05439]. This was the appearance [04758] of the likeness [01823] of the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068]. And when I saw [07200] it, I fell [05307] upon my face [06440], and I heard [08085] a voice [06963] of one that spake [01696].
3 And one cried [07121] unto another, and said [0559], Holy [06918], holy [06918], holy [06918], is the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]: the whole earth [0776] is full [04393] of his glory [03519].
11 So that the priests [03548] could [03201] not stand [05975] to minister [08334] because [06440] of the cloud [06051]: for the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] had filled [04390] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068].
16 And the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] abode [07931] upon mount [02022] Sinai [05514], and the cloud [06051] covered [03680] it six [08337] days [03117]: and the seventh [07637] day [03117] he called [07121] unto Moses [04872] out of the midst [08432] of the cloud [06051].
10 And it came to pass, as Aaron [0175] spake [01696] unto the whole congregation [05712] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], that they looked [06437] toward the wilderness [04057], and, behold, the glory [03519] of the LORD [03068] appeared [07200] in the cloud [06051].
5 But [1161] all [3956] their [846] works [2041] they do [4160] for [4314] to be seen [2300] of men [444]: [1161] they make broad [4115] their [846] phylacteries [5440], and [2532] enlarge [3170] the borders [2899] of their [846] garments [2440],
7 And [1161] as [5130] they departed [4198], Jesus [2424] began [756] to say [3004] unto the multitudes [3793] concerning [4012] John [2491], What [5101] went ye [1831] out into [1519] the wilderness [2048] to see [2300]? A reed [2563] shaken [4531] with [5259] the wind [417]?
14 And [2532] we [2249] have seen [2300] and [2532] do testify [3140] that [3754] the Father [3962] sent [649] the Son [5207] to be the Saviour [4990] of the world [2889].
1 That which [3739] was [2258] from [575] the beginning [746], which [3739] we have heard [191], which [3739] we have seen [3708] with our [2257] eyes [3788], which [3739] we have looked upon [2300], and [2532] our [2257] hands [5495] have handled [5584], of [4012] the Word [3056] of life [2222];
16 But [1161] was [2192] rebuked [1649] for his [2398] iniquity [3892]: the dumb [880] ass [5268] speaking [5350] with [1722] man's [444] voice [5456] forbad [2967] the madness [3913] of the prophet [4396].
32 But [1161] Peter [4074] and [2532] they that were with [4862] him [846] were [2258] heavy [916] with sleep [5258]: and [1161] when they were awake [1235], they saw [1492] his [846] glory [1391], and [2532] the two [1417] men [435] that stood with [4921] him [846].
3 And I will make thee swear [07650] by the LORD [03068], the God [0430] of heaven [08064], and the God [0430] of the earth [0776], that thou shalt not take [03947] a wife [0802] unto my son [01121] of the daughters [01323] of the Canaanites [03669], among [07130] whom I dwell [03427]:
3 And [2532] I heard [191] a great [3173] voice [5456] out of [1537] heaven [3772] saying [3004], Behold [2400], the tabernacle [4633] of God [2316] is with [3326] men [444], and [2532] he will dwell [4637] with [3326] them [846], and [2532] they [846] shall be [2071] his [846] people [2992], and [2532] God [2316] himself [846] shall be [2071] with [3326] them [846], and be their [846] God [2316].
1 For [1063] we know [1492] that [3754] if [1437] our [2257] earthly [1919] house [3614] of this tabernacle [4636] were dissolved [2647], we have [2192] a building [3619] of [1537] God [2316], an house [3614] not made with hands [886], eternal [166] in [1722] the heavens [3772].
8 And [2532] being found [2147] in fashion [4976] as [5613] a man [444], he humbled [5013] himself [1438], and became [1096] obedient [5255] unto [3360] death [2288], even [1161] the death [2288] of the cross [4716].
7 But [235] made [2758] himself [1438] of no reputation [2758], and took upon him [2983] the form [3444] of a servant [1401], and was made [1096] in [1722] the likeness [3667] of men [444]:
1 That which [3739] was [2258] from [575] the beginning [746], which [3739] we have heard [191], which [3739] we have seen [3708] with our [2257] eyes [3788], which [3739] we have looked upon [2300], and [2532] our [2257] hands [5495] have handled [5584], of [4012] the Word [3056] of life [2222];
2 (For [2532] the life [2222] was manifested [5319], and [2532] we have seen [3708] it, and [2532] bear witness [3140], and [2532] shew [518] unto you [5213] that eternal [166] life [2222], which [3748] was [2258] with [4314] the Father [3962], and [2532] was manifested [5319] unto us [2254];)
3 That which [3739] we have seen [3708] and [2532] heard [191] declare we [518] unto you [5213], that [2443] ye [5210] also [2532] may have [2192] fellowship [2842] with [3326] us [2257]: and [2532] truly our [2251] fellowship [2842] [1161] is with [3326] the Father [3962], and [2532] with [3326] his [846] Son [5207] Jesus [2424] Christ [5547].
27 My tabernacle [04908] also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God [0430], and they shall be my people [05971].
67 Moreover he refused [03988] the tabernacle [0168] of Joseph [03130], and chose [0977] not the tribe [07626] of Ephraim [0669]:
6 Whereas I have not dwelt [03427] in any house [01004] since the time [03117] that I brought up [05927] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] out of Egypt [04714], even to this day [03117], but have walked [01980] in a tent [0168] and in a tabernacle [04908].
11 And if it be any unclean [02931] beast [0929], of which they do not offer [07126] a sacrifice [07133] unto the LORD [03068], then he shall present [05975] the beast [0929] before [06440] the priest [03548]:
30 When [3753] Jesus [2424] therefore [3767] had received [2983] the vinegar [3690], he said [2036], It is finished [5055]: and [2532] he bowed [2827] his head [2776], and gave up [3860] the ghost [4151].
21 When Jesus [2424] had [2036] thus [5023] said [2036], he was troubled [5015] in spirit [4151], and [2532] testified [3140], and [2532] said [2036], Verily [281], verily [281], I say [3004] unto you [5213], that [3754] one [1520] of [1537] you [5216] shall betray [3860] me [3165].
33 When [5613] Jesus [2424] therefore [3767] saw [1492] her [846] weeping [2799], and [2532] the Jews [2453] also weeping [2799] which came [4905] with her [846], he groaned [1690] in the spirit [4151], and [2532] was troubled [5015] [1438],
27 Now [3568] is [5015] my [3450] soul [5590] troubled [5015]; and [2532] what [5101] shall I say [2036]? Father [3962], save [4982] me [3165] from [1537] this [5026] hour [5610]: but [235] for this [5124] cause [1223] came I [2064] unto [1519] this [5026] hour [5610].
3 All things [3956] were made [1096] by [1223] him [846]; and [2532] without [5565] him [846] was [1096] not [3761] any thing [1520] made [1096] that [3739] was made [1096].
89 And when Moses [04872] was gone [0935] into the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] to speak [01696] with him, then he heard [08085] the voice [06963] of one speaking [01696] unto him from off the mercy seat [03727] that was upon the ark [0727] of testimony [05715], from between the two [08147] cherubims [03742]: and he spake [01696] unto him.
22 And there I will meet [03259] with thee, and I will commune [01696] with thee from above the mercy seat [03727], from between [0996] the two [08147] cherubims [03742] which are upon [05921] the ark [0727] of the testimony [05715], of all things which I will give thee in commandment [06680] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
68 Blessed [2128] be the Lord [2962] God [2316] of Israel [2474]; for [3754] he hath visited [1980] and [2532] redeemed [3085] his [846] people [2992] [4160],
1 In [1722] the beginning [746] was [2258] the Word [3056], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] with [4314] God [2316], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] God [2316].
1 In [1722] the beginning [746] was [2258] the Word [3056], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] with [4314] God [2316], and [2532] the Word [3056] was [2258] God [2316].
