Anna--or, Hannah.

a prophetess--another evidence that "the last times" in which God was to "pour out His Spirit upon all flesh" were at hand.

of the tribe of Aser--one of the ten tribes, of whom many were not carried captive, and not a few reunited themselves to Judah after the return from Babylon. The distinction of tribes, though practically destroyed by the captivity, was well enough known up to their final dispersion (Rom 11:1; Heb 7:14); nor is it now entirely lost.

lived, &c.--she had lived seven years with her husband (Luk 2:36), and been a widow eighty-four years; so that if she married at the earliest marriageable age, twelve years, she could not at this time be less than a hundred three years old.

36 And [2532] there was [2258] one Anna [451], a prophetess [4398], the daughter [2364] of Phanuel [5323], of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Aser [768]: she [3778] [846] was of a great [4183] [1722] age [2250] [4260], and had lived [2198] with [3326] an husband [435] seven [2033] years [2094] from [575] her [846] virginity [3932];
14 For [1063] it is evident [4271] that [3754] our [2257] Lord [2962] sprang [393] out of [1537] Juda [2455]; of [1519] which [3739] tribe [5443] Moses [3475] spake [2980] nothing [3762] concerning [4012] priesthood [2420].
1 I say [3004] then [3767], [3361] Hath [683] God [2316] cast away [683] his [846] people [2992]? God forbid [3361] [1096]. For [1063] I [1473] also [2532] am [1510] an Israelite [2475], of [1537] the seed [4690] of Abraham [11], of the tribe [5443] of Benjamin [958].
5 After [0310] that thou shalt come [0935] to the hill [01389] of God [0430], where is the garrison [05333] of the Philistines [06430]: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither [0935] to the city [05892], that thou shalt meet [06293] a company [02256] of prophets [05030] coming down [03381] from the high place [01116] with a psaltery [05035], and a tabret [08596], and a pipe [02485], and a harp [03658], before [06440] them; and they shall prophesy [05012]:
4 Of Heman [01968]: the sons [01121] of Heman [01968]; Bukkiah [01232], Mattaniah [04983], Uzziel [05816], Shebuel [07619], and Jerimoth [03406], Hananiah [02608], Hanani [02607], Eliathah [0448], Giddalti [01437], and Romamtiezer [07320], Joshbekashah [03436], Mallothi [04413], Hothir [01956], and Mahazioth [04238]:
1 Moreover David [01732] and the captains [08269] of the host [06635] separated [0914] to the service [05656] of the sons [01121] of Asaph [0623], and of Heman [01968], and of Jeduthun [03038], who should prophesy [05012] [05030] with harps [03658], with psalteries [05035], and with cymbals [04700]: and the number [04557] of the workmen [0582] [04399] according to their service [05656] was:
2 Of the sons [01121] of Asaph [0623]; Zaccur [02139], and Joseph [03130], and Nethaniah [05418], and Asarelah [0841], the sons [01121] of Asaph [0623] under the hands [03027] of Asaph [0623], which prophesied [05012] according to the order [03027] of the king [04428].
20 Notwithstanding [235] I have [2192] a few things [3641] against [2596] thee [4675], because [3754] thou sufferest [1439] that woman [1135] Jezebel [2403], which [3588] calleth [3004] herself [1438] a prophetess [4398], to teach [1321] and [2532] to seduce [4105] my [1699] servants [1401] to commit fornication [4203], and [2532] to eat [5315] things sacrificed unto idols [1494].
1 And Hezekiah [03169] sent [07971] to all Israel [03478] and Judah [03063], and wrote [03789] letters [0107] also to Ephraim [0669] and Manasseh [04519], that they should come [0935] to the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] at Jerusalem [03389], to keep [06213] the passover [06453] unto the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478].
2 For the king [04428] had taken counsel [03289], and his princes [08269], and all the congregation [06951] in Jerusalem [03389], to keep [06213] the passover [06453] in the second [08145] month [02320].
3 For they could [03201] not keep [06213] it at that time [06256], because the priests [03548] had not sanctified [06942] themselves sufficiently [04078] [01767], neither had the people [05971] gathered themselves together [0622] to Jerusalem [03389].
4 And the thing [01697] pleased [03474] [05869] the king [04428] and all the congregation [06951].
5 So they established [05975] a decree [01697] to make proclamation [05674] [06963] throughout all Israel [03478], from Beersheba [0884] even to Dan [01835], that they should come [0935] to keep [06213] the passover [06453] unto the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Israel [03478] at Jerusalem [03389]: for they had not done [06213] it of a long [07230] time in such sort as it was written [03789].
6 So the posts [07323] went [03212] with the letters [0107] from [03027] the king [04428] and his princes [08269] throughout all Israel [03478] and Judah [03063], and according to the commandment [04687] of the king [04428], saying [0559], Ye children [01121] of Israel [03478], turn again [07725] unto the LORD [03068] God [0430] of Abraham [085], Isaac [03327], and Israel [03478], and he will return [07725] to the remnant [07604] of you, that are escaped [06413] out of the hand [03709] of the kings [04428] of Assyria [0804].
7 And be not ye like your fathers [01], and like your brethren [0251], which trespassed [04603] against the LORD [03068] God [0430] of their fathers [01], who therefore gave them up [05414] to desolation [08047], as ye see [07200].
8 Now be ye not stiffnecked [07185] [06203], as your fathers [01] were, but yield [05414] yourselves [03027] unto the LORD [03068], and enter [0935] into his sanctuary [04720], which he hath sanctified [06942] for ever [05769]: and serve [05647] the LORD [03068] your God [0430], that the fierceness [02740] of his wrath [0639] may turn away [07725] from you.
9 For if ye turn again [07725] unto the LORD [03068], your brethren [0251] and your children [01121] shall find compassion [07356] before [06440] them that lead them captive [07617], so that they shall come again [07725] into this land [0776]: for the LORD [03068] your God [0430] is gracious [02587] and merciful [07349], and will not turn away [05493] his face [06440] from you, if ye return [07725] unto him.
10 So the posts [07323] passed [05674] from city [05892] to city [05892] through the country [0776] of Ephraim [0669] and Manasseh [04519] even unto Zebulun [02074]: but they laughed them to scorn [07832], and mocked [03932] them.
11 Nevertheless divers [0582] of Asher [0836] and Manasseh [04519] and of Zebulun [02074] humbled [03665] themselves, and came [0935] to Jerusalem [03389].
38 And [2532] she [3778] [846] coming in [2186] that [846] instant [5610] gave thanks likewise [437] unto the Lord [2962], and [2532] spake [2980] of [4012] him [846] to all [3956] them that looked [4327] for redemption [3085] in [1722] Jerusalem [2419].
3 But [1161] he that prophesieth [4395] speaketh [2980] unto men [444] to edification [3619], and [2532] exhortation [3874], and [2532] comfort [3889].
