Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The abomination of desolation - This is a Hebrew expression, meaning an abominable or hateful destroyer. The Gentiles were all held in abomination by the Jews, Act 10:28. The abomination of desolation means the Roman army, and is so explained by Luk 21:20. The Roman army is further called the "abomination" on account of the images of the emperor, and the eagles, carried in front of the legions, and regarded by the Romans with divine honors.
Spoken of by Daniel the prophet - Dan 9:26-27; Dan 11:31; Dan 12:11, see the notes at those passages.
Standing in the holy place - Mark says, standing where it ought not," meaning the same thing. All Jerusalem was esteemed "holy," Mat 4:5. The meaning of this is, when you see the Roman armies standing in the holy city or encamped around the temple, or the Roman ensigns or standards in the temple. Josephus relates that when the city was taken, the Romans brought their idols into the temple, and placed them over the eastern gate, and sacrificed to them there, "Jewish Wars," b. 6 chapter 6, section 1.
Whoso readeth ... - This seems to be a remark made by the evangelist to direct the attention of the reader particularly to the meaning of the prophecy by Daniel. |

Abomination of desolation (βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως)
The cognate verb, βδελύσσομαι, means to feel a nausea or loathing for food: hence used of disgust generally. In a moral sense it denotes an object of moral or religious repugnance. See Ch2 15:8; Jer 13:27; Eze 11:21; Dan 9:27; Dan 11:31. It is used as equivalent to idol in Kg1 11:17; Deu 7:26; Kg2 23:13. It denotes anything in which estrangement from God manifests itself; as the eating of unclean beasts, Lev 11:11; Deu 14:3; and, generally, all forms of heathenism. This moral sense must be emphasized in the New Testament use of the word. Compare Luk 16:15; Rev 17:4, Rev 17:5; Rev 21:27. It does not denote mere physical or aesthetic disgust. The reference here is probably to the occupation of the temple precincts by the idolatrous Romans under Titus, with their standards and ensigns. Josephus says that, after the burning of the temple the Romans brought their ensigns and set them over against the eastern gate, and there they offered sacrifices to them, and declared Titus, with acclamations, to be emperor. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
When ye see the abomination of desolation - Daniel's term is, The abomination that maketh desolate, Dan 11:31; that is, the standards of the desolating legions, on which they bear the abominable images of their idols: Standing in the holy place - Not only the temple and the mountain on which it stood, but the whole city of Jerusalem, and several furlongs of land round about it, were accounted holy; particularly the mount on which our Lord now sat, and on which the Romans afterward planted their ensigns. He that readeth let him understand - Whoever reads that prophecy of Daniel, let him deeply consider it. Mar 13:14; Luk 21:20; Dan 9:27. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel - This abomination of desolation, St. Luke, (Luk 21:20, Luk 21:21), refers to the Roman army; and this abomination standing in the holy place is the Roman army besieging Jerusalem; this, our Lord says, is what was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, in the ninth and eleventh chapters of his prophecy; and so let every one who reads these prophecies understand them; and in reference to this very event they are understood by the rabbins. The Roman army is called an abomination, for its ensigns and images, which were so to the Jews. Josephus says, (War, b. vi. chap. 6), the Romans brought their ensigns into the temple, and placed them over against the eastern gate, and sacrificed to them there. The Roman army is therefore fitly called the abomination, and the abomination which maketh desolate, as it was to desolate and lay waste Jerusalem; and this army besieging Jerusalem is called by St. Mark, Mar 13:14, standing where it ought not, that is, as in the text here, the holy place; as not only the city, but a considerable compass of ground about it, was deemed holy, and consequently no profane persons should stand on it. |
5 Then [5119] the devil [1228] taketh [3880] him [846] up [3880] into [1519] the holy [40] city [4172], and [2532] setteth [2476] him [846] on [1909] a pinnacle [4419] of the temple [2411],
11 And from the time [06256] that the daily [08548] sacrifice shall be taken away [05493], and the abomination [08251] that maketh desolate [08074] set up [05414], there shall be a thousand [0505] two hundred [03967] and ninety [08673] days [03117].

26 And after [0310] threescore [08346] and two [08147] weeks [07620] shall Messiah [04899] be cut off [03772], but not for himself: and the people [05971] of the prince [05057] that shall come [0935] shall destroy [07843] the city [05892] and the sanctuary [06944]; and the end [07093] thereof shall be with a flood [07858], and unto the end [07093] of the war [04421] desolations [08074] are determined [02782].
27 And he shall confirm [01396] the covenant [01285] with many [07227] for one [0259] week [07620]: and in the midst [02677] of the week [07620] he shall cause the sacrifice [02077] and the oblation [04503] to cease [07673], and for the overspreading [03671] of abominations [08251] he shall make it desolate [08074], even until the consummation [03617], and that determined [02782] shall be poured [05413] upon the desolate [08074].

27 And [2532] there shall [1525] in no wise [3364] enter [1525] into [1519] it [846] any thing [3956] that defileth [2840], neither [2532] whatsoever worketh [4160] abomination [946], or [2532] maketh a lie [5579]: but [1508] they which are written [1125] in [1722] the Lamb's [721] book [975] of life [2222].
5 And [2532] upon [1909] her [846] forehead [3359] was a name [3686] written [1125], MYSTERY [3466], BABYLON [897] THE GREAT [3173], THE MOTHER [3384] OF HARLOTS [4204] AND [2532] ABOMINATIONS [946] OF THE EARTH [1093].

15 And [2532] he said [2036] unto them [846], Ye [5210] are [2075] they which justify [1344] yourselves [1438] before [1799] men [444]; but [1161] God [2316] knoweth [1097] your [5216] hearts [2588]: for [3754] that which is highly esteemed [5308] among [1722] men [444] is [2076] abomination [946] in the sight [1799] of God [2316].

26 Neither shalt thou bring [0935] an abomination [08441] into thine house [01004], lest thou be a cursed thing [02764] like it: but thou shalt utterly [08262] detest [08262] it, and thou shalt utterly [08581] abhor [08581] it; for it is a cursed thing [02764].

21 But as for them whose heart [03820] walketh [01980] after the heart [03820] of their detestable things [08251] and their abominations [08441], I will recompense [05414] their way [01870] upon their own heads [07218], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
