Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
For I say unto you--and these were His last words to the impenitent nation, see on Mar 13:1, opening remarks.
Ye shall not see me henceforth--What? Does Jesus mean that He was Himself the Lord of the temple, and that it became "deserted" when HE finally left it? It is even so. Now is thy fate sealed, O Jerusalem, for the glory is departed from thee! That glory, once visible in the holy of holies, over the mercy seat, when on the day of atonement the blood of typical expiation was sprinkled on it and in front of it--called by the Jews the Shekinah, or the Dwelling, as being the visible pavilion of Jehovah--that glory, which Isaiah (Isa 6:1-13) saw in vision, the beloved disciple says was the glory of Christ (Joh 12:41). Though it was never visible in the second temple, Haggai foretold that "the glory of that latter house should be greater than of the former" (Hag 2:9) because "the Lord whom they sought was suddenly to come to His temple" (Mal 3:1), not in a mere bright cloud, but enshrined in living humanity! Yet brief as well as "sudden" was the manifestation to be: for the words He was now uttering were to be HIS VERY LAST within its precincts.
till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord--that is, till those "Hosannas to the Son of David" with which the multitude had welcomed Him into the city--instead of "sore displeasing the chief priests and scribes" (Mat 21:15) --should break forth from the whole nation, as their glad acclaim to their once pierced, but now acknowledged, Messiah. That such a time will come is clear from Zac 12:10; Rom 11:26; Co2 3:15-16, &c. In what sense they shall then "see Him" may be gathered from Zac 2:10-13; Eze 37:23-28; Eze 39:28-29, &c. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Ye shall not see me ... - The day of your mercy is gone by. I have offered you protection and salvation, and you have rejected it. You are about to crucify me, and your temple to be destroyed, and you, as a nation, to be given up to long and dreadful suffering. You will not see me as a merciful Saviour, offering you redemption any more, until you have borne these heavy judgments. They must come upon you, and be borne, until you would be glad to hail a deliverer, and say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Blessed be he that comes as the Messiah, to bring deliverance. This has not been yet accomplished, but the days will come when the Jews, long cast out and rejected, will hail Jesus as the Messiah, and receive him whom their fathers killed as the merciful Saviour, Rom 11:25-32.
Remarks On Matthew 23
1. Proper respect should always be shown to teachers and rulers, Mat 23:3.
2. We are not to copy the example of wicked people, though they are our teachers or rulers, Mat 23:3. We are to frame our conduct by the law of God, and not by the example of people.
3. People are often very rigid in exacting of others what they fail altogether of performing themselves, Mat 23:4.
4. We are not to seek human honors Mat 23:8, nor to give flattering titles to others, nor to allow others to give them to us Mat 23:9. Our highest honor is in humility, and he is most exalted who is most lowly, Mat 23:11-12.
5. In the descriptions of the scribes and Pharisees in this chapter, we have a full-length portrait of a hypocrite.
(1) they shut up the kingdom of heaven against others, Mat 23:13. They made great pretensions to knowledge, but they neither entered in themselves, nor suffered others.
(2) they committed the grossest iniquity under a cloak of religion, Mat 23:14. They cheated widows out of their property, and made long prayers to hide their villainy.
(3) they showed great zeal in making proselytes, yet did it only for gain, and made them more wicked, Mat 23:15.
(4) they taught false doctrine, and they resorted to artful contrivances to destroy the force of oaths, and to shut out the Creator from their view, Mat 23:16-22.
(5) they were superstitious, Mat 23:23. Small matters they were exact in; matters of real importance they cared little about.
(6) they took great pains to appear well, while they themselves knew that it was all deceit and falsehood, Mat 23:25-28.
(7) they professed great veneration for the memory of the pious dead, while at the same time they were conscious that they really approved the conduct of those that killed them, Mat 23:29-31.
Never, perhaps, was there a combination of more wicked feelings and hypocritical actions than among them; and never was there more profound knowledge of the human heart, and more faithfulness, than in him who tore off the mask, and showed them what they were.
6. It is amazing with what power and authority our blessed Lord reproves this wicked people. It is wonderful that they ever waited for a mock trial, and did not kill him at once. But his time was not come, and they were restrained, and not buffered to act out the fury of their mad passions.
7. Jesus pities dying sinners, Mat 23:37. He seeks their salvation. He pleads with them to be saved. He would gather them to him, if they would come. The most hardened, even like the sinners of Jerusalem, he would save if they would come to him. But they will not. They turn from him, and tread the road to death.
8. The reason why the wicked are not saved is their own obstinacy. They choose not to be saved, and they die. If they will not come to Christ, it is right that they should die. If they do not come, they must die.
9. The sinner will be destroyed, Mat 23:38. The day will come when the mercy of God will be clean gone forever, and the forbearance of God exhausted, and then the sinner must perish. When once God has given him over, he must die. No man, no parent, no minister, no friend, no angel, no archangel, can then save. Salvation is lost, forever lost. Oh how amazing is the folly of the wicked, that they weary out the forbearance of God, and perish in their sins! |

The three "untils" of Israel's blessing:
(1) Israel must say, "blessed is He" (Mat 23:39); (Rom 10:3); (Rom 10:4).
(2) Gentile world-power must run its course. (Luk 21:24); (Dan 2:34); (Dan 2:35).
(3) The elect number of Gentiles must be brought in. Then "the Deliverer shall come out of Zion." etc. (Rom 11:25-27). |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Ye - Jews in general; men of Jerusalem in particular: shall not see me from this time - Which includes the short space till his death, till, after a long interval of desolation and misery, ye say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord - Ye receive me with joyful and thankful hearts. This also shall be accomplished in its season. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Ye shall not see me - I will remove my Gospel from you, and withdraw my protection.
Till ye shall say, Blessed - Till after the fullness of the Gentiles is brought in, when the word of life shall again be sent unto you; then will ye rejoice, and bless, and praise him that cometh in the name of the Lord, with full and final salvation for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. See Rom 11:26, Rom 11:27.
Our Lord plainly foresaw that, in process of time, a spiritual domination would arise in his Church; and, to prevent its evil influence, he leaves the strong warnings against it which are contained in the former part of this chapter. As the religion of Christ is completely spiritual, and the influence by which it is produced and maintained must come from heaven; therefore, there could be no master or head but himself: for as the Church (the assemblage of true believers) is his body, all its intelligence, light, and life, must proceed from him alone. Our forefathers noted this well; and this was one of the grand arguments by which they overturned the papal pretensions to supremacy in this country. In a note on Mat 23:9, in a Bible published by Edmund Becke in 1549, the 2nd of Edward VI., we find the following words: - Call no man your father upon the earth. Here is the Bishoppe of Rome declared a plaine Antichrist, in that he woulde be called the most holye father; and that all Christen men shoulde acknowledge hym for no lesse then their spyritual father, notwithstandinge these playne wordes of Christe. It is true, nothing can be plainer; and yet, in the face of these commands, the pope has claimed the honor; and millions of men have been so stupid as to concede it. May those days of darkness, tyranny, and disgrace, never return!
From the 13th to the 39th verse, our Lord pronounces eight woes, or rather pathetic declarations, against the scribes and Pharisees.
1. For their unwillingness to let the common people enjoy the pure word of God, or its right explanation: Ye shut up the kingdom, etc., Mat 23:13.
2. For their rapacity, and pretended sanctity in order to secure their secular ends: Ye devour widows houses, etc., Mat 23:14.
3. For their pretended zeal to spread the kingdom of God by making proselytes, when they had no other end in view than forming instruments for the purposes of their oppression and cruelty: Ye compass sea and land, etc., Mat 23:15.
4. For their bad doctrine and false interpretations of the Scriptures, and their dispensing with the most solemn oaths and vows at pleasure: Ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing, etc., Mat 23:16-22.
5. For their superstition in scrupulously attending to little things, and things not commanded, and omitting matters of great importance, the practice of which God had especially enjoined: Ye pay tithe of mint and cummin, etc., Mat 23:23, Mat 23:24.
6. For their hypocrisy, pretended saintship, and endeavoring to maintain decency in their outward conduct, while they had no other object in view than to deceive the people, and make them acquiesce in their oppressive measures: Ye make clean the outside of the cup, Mat 23:25, Mat 23:26.
7. For the depth of their inward depravity and abomination, having nothing good, fair, or supportable, but the mere outside. - Most hypocrites and wicked men have some good: but these were radically and totally evil: Ye are like unto whited sepulchres - within full - of all uncleanness, Mat 23:27, Mat 23:28.
8. For their pretended concern for the holiness of the people, which proceeded no farther than to keep them free from such pollutions as they might accidentally and innocently contract, by casually stepping on the place where a person had been buried: and for their affected regret that their fathers had killed the prophets, while themselves possessed and cultivated the same murderous inclinations: Ye - garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, and say, If we had been, etc., Mat 23:29, Mat 23:30.
It is amazing with what power and authority our blessed Lord reproves this bad people. This was the last discourse they ever heard from him; and it is surprising, considering their wickedness, that they waited even for a mock trial, and did not rise up at once and destroy him. But the time was not yet come in which he was to lay down his life, for no man could take it from him.
While he appears in this last discourse with all the authority of a lawgiver and judge, he at the same time shows the tenderness and compassion of a friend and a father: he beholds their awful state - his eye affects his heart, and he weeps over them! Were not the present hardness and final perdition of these ungodly men entirely of themselves? Could Jesus, as the Supreme God, have fixed their reprobation from all eternity by any necessitating decree; and yet weep over the unavoidable consequences of his own sovereign determinations? How absurd as well as shocking is the thought! This is Jewish exclusion: Credat Judaeus Apella-non ego. |
28 Then shall they know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068] their God [0430], which caused them to be led into captivity [01540] among the heathen [01471]: but I have gathered [03664] them unto their own land [0127], and have left [03498] none of them any more there.
29 Neither will I hide [05641] my face [06440] any more from them: for I have poured out [08210] my spirit [07307] upon the house [01004] of Israel [03478], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069].
23 Neither shall they defile [02930] themselves any more with their idols [01544], nor with their detestable things [08251], nor with any of their transgressions [06588]: but I will save [03467] them out of all their dwellingplaces [04186], wherein they have sinned [02398], and will cleanse [02891] them: so shall they be my people [05971], and I will be their God [0430].
24 And David [01732] my servant [05650] shall be king [04428] over them; and they all shall have one [0259] shepherd [07462]: they shall also walk [03212] in my judgments [04941], and observe [08104] my statutes [02708], and do [06213] them.
25 And they shall dwell [03427] in the land [0776] that I have given [05414] unto Jacob [03290] my servant [05650], wherein your fathers [01] have dwelt [03427]; and they shall dwell [03427] therein, even they, and their children [01121], and their children's [01121] children [01121] for ever [05769]: and my servant [05650] David [01732] shall be their prince [05387] for [05704] ever [05769].
26 Moreover I will make [03772] a covenant [01285] of peace [07965] with them; it shall be an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285] with them: and I will place [05414] them, and multiply [07235] them, and will set [05414] my sanctuary [04720] in the midst [08432] of them for evermore [05769].
27 My tabernacle [04908] also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God [0430], and they shall be my people [05971].
28 And the heathen [01471] shall know [03045] that I the LORD [03068] do sanctify [06942] Israel [03478], when my sanctuary [04720] shall be in the midst [08432] of them for evermore [05769].
10 Sing [07442] and rejoice [08055], O daughter [01323] of Zion [06726]: for, lo, I come [0935], and I will dwell [07931] in the midst [08432] of thee, saith [05002] the LORD [03068].
11 And many [07227] nations [01471] shall be joined [03867] to the LORD [03068] in that day [03117], and shall be my people [05971]: and I will dwell [07931] in the midst [08432] of thee, and thou shalt know [03045] that the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] hath sent [07971] me unto thee.
12 And the LORD [03068] shall inherit [05157] Judah [03063] his portion [02506] in the holy [06944] land [0127], and shall choose [0977] Jerusalem [03389] again.
13 Be silent [02013], O all flesh [01320], before [06440] the LORD [03068]: for he is raised up [05782] out of his holy [06944] habitation [04583].
15 But [235] even [2193] unto this day [4594], when [2259] Moses [3475] is read [314], the vail [2571] is upon [2749] [1909] their [846] heart [2588].
16 Nevertheless [1161] when [2259] it [302] shall turn [1994] to [4314] the Lord [2962], the vail [2571] shall be taken away [4014].
26 And [2532] so [3779] all [3956] Israel [2474] shall be saved [4982]: as [2531] it is written [1125], There shall come [2240] out of [1537] Sion [4622] the Deliverer [4506], and [2532] shall turn away [654] ungodliness [763] from [575] Jacob [2384]:
10 And I will pour [08210] upon the house [01004] of David [01732], and upon the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389], the spirit [07307] of grace [02580] and of supplications [08469]: and they shall look [05027] upon me whom they have pierced [01856], and they shall mourn [04553] for him, as one mourneth [05594] for his only [03173] son, and shall be in bitterness [04843] for him, as one that is in bitterness [04843] for his firstborn [01060].
15 And [1161] when the chief priests [749] and [2532] scribes [1122] saw [1492] the wonderful things [2297] that [3739] he did [4160], and [2532] the children [3816] crying [2896] in [1722] the temple [2411], and [2532] saying [3004], Hosanna [5614] to the Son [5207] of David [1138]; they were sore displeased [23],
1 Behold, I will send [07971] my messenger [04397], and he shall prepare [06437] the way [01870] before [06440] me: and the Lord [0113], whom ye seek [01245], shall suddenly [06597] come [0935] to his temple [01964], even the messenger [04397] of the covenant [01285], whom ye delight [02655] in: behold, he shall come [0935], saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
9 The glory [03519] of this latter [0314] house [01004] shall be greater than [01419] of the former [07223], saith [05002] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]: and in this place [04725] will I give [05414] peace [07965], saith [0559] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
41 These things [5023] said [2036] Esaias [2268], when [3753] he saw [1492] his [846] glory [1391], and [2532] spake [2980] of [4012] him [846].
1 In the year [08141] that king [04428] Uzziah [05818] died [04194] I saw [07200] also [0853] the Lord [0136] sitting [03427] upon a throne [03678], high [07311] and lifted up [05375], and his train [07757] filled [04392] [0853] the temple [01964].
2 Above [04605] it stood [05975] the seraphims [08314]: each one [0259] had six [08337] wings [03671]; with twain [08147] he covered [03680] his face [06440], and with twain [08147] he covered [03680] his feet [07272], and with twain [08147] he did fly [05774].
3 And one cried [07121] unto another, and said [0559], Holy [06918], holy [06918], holy [06918], is the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635]: the whole earth [0776] is full [04393] of his glory [03519].
4 And the posts [0520] of the door [05592] moved [05128] at the voice [06963] of him that cried [07121], and the house [01004] was filled [04390] with smoke [06227].
5 Then said [0559] I, Woe [0188] is me! for I am undone [01820]; because I am a man [0376] of unclean [02931] lips [08193], and I dwell [03427] in the midst [08432] of a people [05971] of unclean [02931] lips [08193]: for mine eyes [05869] have seen [07200] the King [04428], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635].
6 Then flew [05774] one [0259] of the seraphims [08314] unto me, having a live coal [07531] in his hand [03027], which he had taken [03947] with the tongs [04457] from off the altar [04196]:
7 And he laid [05060] it upon my mouth [06310], and said [0559], Lo, this hath touched [05060] thy lips [08193]; and thine iniquity [05771] is taken away [05493], and thy sin [02403] purged [03722].
8 Also I heard [08085] the voice [06963] of the Lord [0136], saying [0559], Whom shall I send [07971], and who will go [03212] for us? Then said [0559] I, Here am I; send [07971] me.
9 And he said [0559], Go [03212], and tell [0559] this people [05971], Hear [08085] ye indeed [08085], but understand [0995] not; and see [07200] ye indeed [07200], but perceive [03045] not.
10 Make the heart [03820] of this people [05971] fat [08080], and make their ears [0241] heavy [03513], and shut [08173] their eyes [05869]; lest they see [07200] with their eyes [05869], and hear [08085] with their ears [0241], and understand [0995] with their heart [03824], and convert [07725], and be healed [07495].
11 Then said [0559] I, Lord [0136], how long? And he answered [0559], Until the cities [05892] be wasted [07582] without inhabitant [03427], and the houses [01004] without man [0120], and the land [0127] be utterly [08077] desolate [07582],
12 And the LORD [03068] have removed [07368] men [0120] far away [07368], and there be a great [07227] forsaking [05805] in the midst [07130] of the land [0776].
13 But yet in it shall be a tenth [06224], and it shall return [07725], and shall be eaten [01197]: as a teil tree [0424], and as an oak [0437], whose substance [04678] is in them, when they cast [07995] their leaves: so the holy [06944] seed [02233] shall be the substance [04678] thereof.
1 And [2532] as he [846] went [1607] out of [1537] the temple [2411], one [1520] of his [846] disciples [3101] saith [3004] unto him [846], Master [1320], see [2396] what manner [4217] of stones [3037] and [2532] what [4217] buildings [3619] are here!
38 Behold [2400], your [5216] house [3624] is left [863] unto you [5213] desolate [2048].
37 O Jerusalem [2419], Jerusalem [2419], thou that killest [615] the prophets [4396], and [2532] stonest [3036] them which are sent [649] unto [4314] thee [846], how often [4212] would I [2309] have gathered [1996] thy [4675] [3739] children [5043] together [1996], even as [5158] a hen [3733] gathereth [1996] her [1438] chickens [3556] under [5259] her wings [4420], and [2532] ye would [2309] not [3756]!
29 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! because [3754] ye build [3618] the tombs [5028] of the prophets [4396], and [2532] garnish [2885] the sepulchres [3419] of the righteous [1342],
30 And [2532] say [3004], If [1487] we had been [2258] in [1722] the days [2250] of our [2257] fathers [3962], we would [302] not [3756] have been [2258] partakers [2844] with them [846] in [1722] the blood [129] of the prophets [4396].
31 Wherefore [5620] ye be witnesses [3140] unto yourselves [1438], that [3754] ye are [2075] the children [5207] of them which killed [5407] the prophets [4396].
25 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye make clean [2511] the outside [1855] of the cup [4221] and [2532] of the platter [3953], but [1161] within [2081] they are full [1073] of [1537] extortion [724] and [2532] excess [192].
26 Thou blind [5185] Pharisee [5330], cleanse [2511] first [4412] that which is within [1787] the cup [4221] and [2532] platter [3953], that [2443] the outside [1622] of them [846] may be [1096] clean [2513] also [2532].
27 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye are like [3945] unto whited [2867] sepulchres [5028], which [3748] indeed [3303] appear [5316] beautiful [5611] outward [1855], but [1161] are within [2081] full [1073] of dead [3498] men's bones [3747], and [2532] of all [3956] uncleanness [167].
28 Even so [3779] ye [5210] also [2532] [3303] outwardly [1855] appear [5316] righteous [1342] unto men [444], but [1161] within [2081] ye are [2075] full [3324] of hypocrisy [5272] and [2532] iniquity [458].
23 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye pay tithe [586] of mint [2238] and [2532] anise [432] and [2532] cummin [2951], and [2532] have omitted [863] the weightier [926] matters of the law [3551], judgment [2920], [2532] mercy [1656], and [2532] faith [4102]: these [5023] ought ye [1163] to have done [4160], and not [3361] to leave [863] the other [2548] undone [863].
16 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], ye blind [5185] guides [3595], which [3588] say [3004], Whosoever [3739] [302] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the temple [3485], it is [2076] nothing [3762]; but [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the gold [5557] of the temple [3485], he is a debtor [3784] !
17 Ye fools [3474] and [2532] blind [5185]: for [1063] whether [5101] is [2076] greater [3187], the gold [5557], or [2228] the temple [3485] that sanctifieth [37] the gold [5557]?
18 And [2532], Whosoever [3739] [1437] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the altar [2379], it is [2076] nothing [3762]; but [1161] whosoever [3739] [302] sweareth [3660] by [1722] the gift [1435] that is upon [1883] it [846], he is guilty [3784].
19 Ye fools [3474] and [2532] blind [5185]: for [1063] whether [5101] is greater [3187], the gift [1435], or [2228] the altar [2379] that sanctifieth [37] the gift [1435]?
20 Whoso therefore [3767] shall swear [3660] by [1722] the altar [2379], sweareth [3660] by [1722] it [846], and [2532] by [1722] all things [3956] thereon [1883] [846].
21 And [2532] whoso shall swear [3660] by [1722] the temple [3485], sweareth [3660] by [1722] it [846], and [2532] by [1722] him that dwelleth [2730] therein [846].
22 And [2532] he that shall swear [3660] by [1722] heaven [3772], sweareth [3660] by [1722] the throne [2362] of God [2316], and [2532] by [1722] him that sitteth [2521] thereon [1883] [846].
15 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye compass [4013] sea [2281] and [2532] land [3584] to make [4160] one [1520] proselyte [4339], and [2532] when [3752] he is made [1096], ye make [4160] him [846] twofold more [1362] the child [5207] of hell [1067] than yourselves [5216].
14 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye devour [2719] widows [5503]' houses [3614], and [2532] for a pretence [4392] make [4336] long [3117] prayer [4336]: therefore [1223] [5124] ye shall receive [2983] the greater [4055] damnation [2917].
13 But [1161] woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! for [3754] ye shut up [2808] the kingdom [932] of heaven [3772] against [1715] men [444]: for [1063] ye [5210] neither [3761] go in [1525] yourselves, neither [3756] suffer ye [863] them that are entering [1525] to go in [1525].
11 But [1161] he that is greatest [3187] among you [5216] shall be [2071] your [5216] servant [1249].
12 And [1161] whosoever [3748] shall exalt [5312] himself [1438] shall be abased [5013]; and [2532] he [3748] that shall humble [5013] himself [1438] shall be exalted [5312].
9 And [2532] call [2564] no [3361] man your [5216] father [3962] upon [1909] the earth [1093]: for [1063] one [1520] is [2076] your [5216] Father [3962], which [3588] is in [1722] heaven [3772].
8 But [1161] be [2564] not [3361] ye [5210] called [2564] Rabbi [4461]: for [1063] one [1520] is [2076] your [5216] Master [2519], even Christ [5547]; and [1161] all [3956] ye [5210] are [2075] brethren [80].
4 For [1063] they bind [1195] heavy [926] burdens [5413] and [2532] grievous to be borne [1419], and [2532] lay [2007] them on [1909] men's [444] shoulders [5606]; but [1161] they themselves will [2309] not [3756] move [2795] them [846] with one of their [846] fingers [1147].
3 All [3956] therefore [3767] whatsoever [302] [3745] they bid [2036] you [5213] observe [5083], that observe [5083] and [2532] do [4160]; but [1161] do [4160] not [3361] ye after [2596] their [846] works [2041]: for [1063] they say [3004], and [2532] do [4160] not [3756].
25 For [1063] I would [2309] not [3756], brethren [80], that ye [5209] should be ignorant [50] of this [5124] mystery [3466], lest [3363] ye should be [5600] wise [5429] in [3844] your own conceits [1438]; that [3754] blindness [4457] in [575] part [3313] is happened [1096] to Israel [2474], until [891] [3739] the fulness [4138] of the Gentiles [1484] be come in [1525].
27 For [2532] this [3778] is my [3844] [1700] covenant [1242] unto them [846], when [3752] I shall take away [851] their [846] sins [266].
28 As concerning [2596] [3303] the gospel [2098], they are enemies [2190] for your sakes [1223] [5209]: but [1161] as touching [2596] the election [1589], they are beloved [27] for [1223] the fathers [3962]' sakes [1223].
29 For [1063] the gifts [5486] and [2532] calling [2821] of God [2316] are without repentance [278].
30 For [1063] as [5618] [2532] ye [5210] in times past [4218] have not believed [544] God [2316], yet [1161] have [1653] now [3568] obtained mercy [1653] through [5130] their unbelief [543]:
31 Even so [3779] have [544] these [3778] also [2532] now [3568] not believed [544], that [2443] through your [5212] mercy [1656] they [846] also [2532] may obtain mercy [1653].
32 For [1063] God [2316] hath concluded [4788] them all [3956] in [1519] unbelief [543], that [2443] he might have mercy [1653] upon all [3956].
27 For [2532] this [3778] is my [3844] [1700] covenant [1242] unto them [846], when [3752] I shall take away [851] their [846] sins [266].
35 Then [0116] was the iron [06523], the clay [02635], the brass [05174], the silver [03702], and the gold [01722], broken to pieces [01855] [01751] together [02298], and became [01934] like the chaff [05784] of [04481] the summer [07007] threshingfloors [0147]; and the wind [07308] carried [05376] them [01994] away [05376], that [03606] no [03809] place [0870] was found [07912] for them: and the stone [069] that smote [04223] the image [06755] became [01934] a great [07229] mountain [02906], and filled [04391] the whole [03606] earth [0772].
34 Thou sawest [02370] [01934] till [05705] that a stone [069] was cut out [01505] without [03809] hands [03028], which smote [04223] the image [06755] upon [05922] his feet [07271] that were of iron [06523] and clay [02635], and brake [01855] them [01994] to pieces [01855].
24 And [2532] they shall fall [4098] by the edge [4750] of the sword [3162], and [2532] shall be led away captive [163] into [1519] all [3956] nations [1484]: and [2532] Jerusalem [2419] shall be [2071] trodden down [3961] of [5259] the Gentiles [1484], until [891] the times [2540] of the Gentiles [1484] be fulfilled [4137].
4 For [1063] Christ [5547] is the end [5056] of the law [3551] for [1519] righteousness [1343] to every one [3956] that believeth [4100].
3 For [1063] they being ignorant [50] of God's [2316] righteousness [1343], and [2532] going about [2212] to establish [2476] their own [2398] righteousness [1343], have [5293] not [3756] submitted themselves [5293] unto the righteousness [1343] of God [2316].
39 For [1063] I say [3004] unto you [5213], Ye shall [1492] not [3364] see [1492] me [3165] henceforth [575] [737], till [2193] [302] ye shall say [2036], Blessed [2127] is he that cometh [2064] in [1722] the name [3686] of the Lord [2962].
30 And [2532] say [3004], If [1487] we had been [2258] in [1722] the days [2250] of our [2257] fathers [3962], we would [302] not [3756] have been [2258] partakers [2844] with them [846] in [1722] the blood [129] of the prophets [4396].
29 Woe [3759] unto you [5213], scribes [1122] and [2532] Pharisees [5330], hypocrites [5273]! because [3754] ye build [3618] the tombs [5028] of the prophets [4396], and [2532] garnish [2885] the sepulchres [3419] of the righteous [1342],
28 Even so [3779] ye [5210] also [2532] [3303] outwardly [1855] appear [5316] righteous [1342] unto men [444], but [1161] within [2081] ye are [2075] full [3324] of hypocrisy [5272] and [2532] iniquity [458].
26 Thou blind [5185] Pharisee [5330], cleanse [2511] first [4412] that which is within [1787] the cup [4221] and [2532] platter [3953], that [2443] the outside [1622] of them [846] may be [1096] clean [2513] also [2532].
24 Ye blind [5185] guides [3595], which strain at [1368] a gnat [2971], and [1161] swallow [2666] a camel [2574].
9 And [2532] call [2564] no [3361] man your [5216] father [3962] upon [1909] the earth [1093]: for [1063] one [1520] is [2076] your [5216] Father [3962], which [3588] is in [1722] heaven [3772].
27 For [2532] this [3778] is my [3844] [1700] covenant [1242] unto them [846], when [3752] I shall take away [851] their [846] sins [266].
