PLUCKING CORN EARS ON THE SABBATH DAY. ( = Mar 2:23-28; Luk 6:1-5). (Mat 12:1-8)
At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn--"the cornfields" (Mar 2:23; Luk 6:1).
and his disciples were an hungered--not as one may be before his regular meals; but evidently from shortness of provisions: for Jesus defends their plucking the corn-ears and eating them on the plea of necessity.
and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat--"rubbing them in their hands" (Luk 6:1). |

Mat 12:1-8. The account contained in these verses is also recorded in Mar 2:23-28, and Luk 6:1-5.
At that time - Luke Luk 6:1 fixes the time more particularly. He says that it was "the second Sabbath after the first." To understand this, it is proper to remark that the "Passover" was observed during the month "Abib," or Nisan, answering to the latter part of March and the first of April. The feast was held seven days, commencing on the fourteenth day of the month Exo. 12:1-28; Exo 23:15, on the "second" day of the paschal week. The law required that a sheaf of "barley" should be offered up as the first-fruits of the harvest, Lev 23:10-11. From this day was reckoned seven weeks to the feast of "Pentecost" Lev 23:15-16, called also the feast of weeks Deu 16:10, and the feast of the harvest, Exo 23:16. This second day in the feast of the Passover, or of unleavened bread, was the beginning, therefore, from which they reckoned toward the Pentecost. The Sabbath in the week following would be the "second Sabbath" after this first one in the reckoning, and this was doubtless the time mentioned when Christ went through the fields. It should be further mentioned, that in Judea the barley harvest commences about the beginning of May, and both that and the wheat harvest are over by the twentieth. Barley is in full ear in the beginning of April. There is no improbability, therefore, in this narrative on account of the season of the year. This feast was always held at Jerusalem.
Through the corn - Through the "barley," or "wheat." The word "corn," as used in our translation of the Bible, has no reference to "maize," or "Indian corn," as it has with us. Indian corn was unknown until the discovery of America, and it is scarcely probable that the translators knew anything about it. The word "corn" was applied, as it is still in England, to wheat, rye, oats, and barley. This explains the circumstance that they "rubbed it in their hands" Luk 6:1 to separate the grain from the chaff. |

sabbath
(1) The sabbath ("cessation") appears in Scripture as the day of God's rest in the finished work of creation. (Gen 2:2-3). For 2500 years of human life absolutely no mention is made of it. Then the sabbath was revealed; (Exo 16:23); (Neh 9:13-14); made a part of the law (Exo 20:8-11) and invested with the character of a "sign" between Jehovah and Israel, and a perpetual reminder to Israel of their separation to God (Exo 31:13-17). It was observed by complete rest (Exo 35:2-3) and by Jehovah's express order a man was put to death for gathering sticks on the sabbath day. (Num 15:32-36). Apart from maintaining the continued burnt-offering (Num 28:9); and its connection with the annual feasts; (Exo 12:16); (Lev 23:3); (Lev 23:8); (Num 28:25) the seventh day sabbath was never made a day of sacrifice, worship, or any manner of religious service. It was simply and only a day of complete rest for man and beast, a humane provision for man's needs. In Christ's words, "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath." (Mar 2:27).
(2) Our Lord found the observance of the day encrusted with rabbinical evasions (Mat 12:2) and restrictions, wholly unknown to the law, so that He was Himself held to be a sabbath breaker by the religious authorities of the time. The sabbath will be again observed during the kingdom age (Isa 66:23).
(3) The Christian first day perpetuates in the dispensation of grace the principle that one-seventh of the time is especially sacred, but in all other respects is in contrast with the sabbath. One is the seventh day, the other the first. The sabbath commemorates God's creation rest, the first day Christ's resurrection. On the seventh day God rested, on the first day Christ was ceaselessly active. The sabbath commemorates a finished creation, the first day a finished redemption. The sabbath was a day of legal obligation, the first day one of voluntary worship and service. The sabbath is mentioned in the Acts only in connection with the Jews, and in the rest of the New Testament but twice. (Col 2:16); (Heb 4:4). In these passages the seventh day sabbath is explained to be to the Christian not a day to be observed, but a type of the present rest into which he enters when "he also ceases from his own works" and trusts Christ. |

Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
His disciples plucked the ears of corn, and ate - Just what sufficed for present necessity: dried corn was a common food among the Jews. Mar 2:23; Luk 6:1. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath-day through the corn - "The time is determined by Luke in these words, εν σαββατω δευτεροπρωτω, that is, on the Sabbath from the second-first.
"Provision was made by the Divine law that the sheaf of first-fruits should be offered on the second day of the pass-over week, Lev 23:10, Lev 23:11. On the morrow after the Sabbath, the priest shall shake (or wave) it. Not on the morrow after the ordinary Sabbath of the week, but the morrow after the first of the pass-over week, which was a Sabbatic day, Exo 12:16; Lev 23:7. Hence the seventy, επαυριον της πρωτης, the morrow of the first day; the Chaldee, the morrow after the holy day. The rabbins, Solomon and Menachen, have it, On the morrow after the first day of the pass-over feast; of which mention had been made in the verses foregoing.
"But now, from the second day of the pass-over solemnity, wherein the sheaf was offered, were numbered seven weeks to pentecost: for the day of the sheaf, and the day of pentecost did mutually respect each other; for on this second day of the pass-over, the offering of the sheaf was supplicatory, and by way of prayer, beseeching a blessing upon the new corn, and leave to eat it, and to pot in the sickle into the standing corn. Now, the offering of the first-fruit loaves on the day of pentecost, (Lev 23:15-17), did respect the giving of thanks for the finishing and housing of the barley-harvest. Therefore, in regard of this relation, these two solemnities were linked together, that both might respect the harvest; that, the harvest beginning; this, the harvest ended: this depended on that, and was numbered seven weeks after it. Therefore, the computation of the time coming between could not but carry with it the memory of that second day of the pass-over week; and hence pentecost is called the feast of weeks, Deu 16:10. The true calculation of the time between could not otherwise be retained, as to Sabbaths, but by numbering thus: this is σαββατον δευτεροπρωτον, the first Sabbath after the second day of the pass-over. This is δευτεροδευρερον, the second Sabbath after that second day. And so of the rest. In the Jerusalem Talmud, the word שבת פרוטוגמייא shebeth protogamiya, the Sabbath, πρωτογαμιας, of the first marriage, is a composition not very unlike." Lightfoot.
His disciples were an hungered - Were hungry. The former is a mode of expression totally obsolete. How near does the translation of this verse come to our ancient mother-tongue, the Anglo-Saxon! - The Healer went on rest-day over acres: truly his learning knights hungred, and they began to pluck the ear and eaten - We may well wonder at the extreme poverty of Christ and his disciples. He was himself present with them, and yet permitted them to lack bread! A man, therefore, is not forsaken of God because he is in want. It is more honorable to suffer the want of all temporal things in fellowship with Christ and his followers, than to have all things in abundance in connection with the world. |
1 And [1161] it came to pass [1096] on [1722] the second [1207] sabbath [4521] after the first [1207], that he [846] went [1279] through [1223] the corn fields [4702]; and [2532] his [846] disciples [3101] plucked [5089] the ears of corn [4719], and [2532] did eat [2068], rubbing [5597] them in their hands [5495].
23 And [2532] it came to pass [1096], that he [846] went [3899] through [1223] the corn fields [4702] on [1722] the sabbath day [4521]; and [2532] his [846] disciples [3101] began [756], as they went [3598] [4160], to pluck [5089] the ears of corn [4719].
1 At [1722] that [1565] time [2540] Jesus [2424] went [4198] on the sabbath day [4521] through [1223] the corn [4702]; and [1161] his [846] disciples [3101] were an hungred [3983], and [2532] began [756] to pluck [5089] the ears of corn [4719], and [2532] to eat [2068].
2 But [1161] when the Pharisees [5330] saw [1492] it, they said [2036] unto him [846], Behold [2400], thy [4675] disciples [3101] do [4160] that which [3739] is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to do [4160] upon [1722] the sabbath day [4521].
3 But [1161] he said [2036] unto them [846], Have ye [314] not [3756] read [314] what [5101] David [1138] did [4160], when [3753] he [846] was an hungred [3983], and [2532] they [3326] that were with him [846];
4 How [4459] he entered into [1525] [1519] the house [3624] of God [2316], and [2532] did eat [5315] the shewbread [740] [4286], which [3739] was [2258] not [3756] lawful [1832] for him [846] to eat [5315], neither for [3761] them which [3326] were with him [846], but [1508] only [3441] for the priests [2409]?
5 Or [2228] have ye [314] not [3756] read [314] in [1722] the law [3551], how that [3754] on the sabbath days [4521] the priests [2409] in [1722] the temple [2411] profane [953] the sabbath [4521], and [2532] are [1526] blameless [338]?
6 But [1161] I say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] in this place [5602] is one [2076] greater than [3187] the temple [2411].
7 But [1161] if [1487] ye had known [1097] what [5101] this meaneth [2076], I will have [2309] mercy [1656], and [2532] not [3756] sacrifice [2378], ye would [302] not [3756] have condemned [2613] the guiltless [338].
8 For [1063] the Son [5207] of man [444] is [2076] Lord [2962] even [2532] of the sabbath day [4521].
2 And [1161] certain [5100] of the Pharisees [5330] said [2036] unto them [846], Why [5101] do ye [4160] that which [3739] is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to do [4160] on [1722] the sabbath days [4521]?
3 And [2532] Jesus [2424] answering [611] them [4314] [846] said [2036], Have ye [314] not [3761] read [314] so much as [3761] this [5124], what [3739] David [1138] did [4160], when [3698] himself [846] was an hungred [3983], and [2532] they which [3588] were [5607] with [3326] him [846];
4 How [5613] he went [1525] into [1519] the house [3624] of God [2316], and [2532] did take [2983] and [2532] eat [5315] the shewbread [740] [4286], and [2532] gave [1325] also [2532] to them that were with [3326] him [846]; which [3739] it is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to eat [5315] but for [1508] the priests [2409] alone [3441]?
5 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], That [3754] the Son [5207] of man [444] is [2076] Lord [2962] also [2532] of the sabbath [4521].
24 And [2532] the Pharisees [5330] said [3004] unto him [846], Behold [2396], why [5101] do they [4160] on [1722] the sabbath day [4521] that which [3739] is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832]?
25 And [2532] he [846] said [3004] unto them [846], Have ye never [3763] read [314] what [5101] David [1138] did [4160], when [3753] he had [2192] need [5532], and [2532] was an hungred [3983], he [846], and [2532] they that were with [3326] him [846]?
26 How [4459] he went [1525] into [1519] the house [3624] of God [2316] in the days [1909] of Abiathar [8] the high priest [749], and [2532] did eat [5315] the shewbread [740] [4286], which [3739] is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to eat [5315] but for [1508] the priests [2409], and [2532] gave [1325] also [2532] to them which were [5607] with [4862] him [846]?
27 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], The sabbath [4521] was made [1096] for [1223] man [444], and not [3756] man [444] for [1223] the sabbath [4521]:
28 Therefore [5620] the Son [5207] of man [444] is [2076] Lord [2962] also [2532] of the sabbath [4521].
16 And the feast [02282] of harvest [07105], the firstfruits [01061] of thy labours [04639], which thou hast sown [02232] in the field [07704]: and the feast [02282] of ingathering [0614], which is in the end [03318] of the year [08141], when thou hast gathered [0622] in thy labours [04639] out of the field [07704].
10 And thou shalt keep [06213] the feast [02282] of weeks [07620] unto the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] with a tribute [04530] of a freewill offering [05071] of thine hand [03027], which thou shalt give [05414] unto the LORD thy God, according as the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] hath blessed [01288] thee:
15 And ye shall count [05608] unto you from the morrow [04283] after the sabbath [07676], from the day [03117] that ye brought [0935] the sheaf [06016] of the wave offering [08573]; seven [07651] sabbaths [07676] shall be [01961] complete [08549]:
16 Even unto [05704] the morrow [04283] after the seventh [07637] sabbath [07676] shall ye number [05608] fifty [02572] days [03117]; and ye shall offer [07126] a new [02319] meat offering [04503] unto the LORD [03068].
10 Speak [01696] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], and say [0559] unto them, When ye be come [0935] into the land [0776] which I give [05414] unto you, and shall reap [07114] the harvest [07105] thereof, then ye shall bring [0935] a sheaf [06016] of the firstfruits [07225] of your harvest [07105] unto the priest [03548]:
11 And he shall wave [05130] the sheaf [06016] before [06440] the LORD [03068], to be accepted [07522] for you: on the morrow [04283] after the sabbath [07676] the priest [03548] shall wave [05130] it.
15 Thou shalt keep [08104] the feast [02282] of unleavened bread [04682]: (thou shalt eat [0398] unleavened bread [04682] seven [07651] days [03117], as I commanded [06680] thee, in the time appointed [04150] of the month [02320] Abib [024]; for in it thou camest out [03318] from Egypt [04714]: and none shall appear [07200] before [06440] me empty [07387]:)
2 And [1161] certain [5100] of the Pharisees [5330] said [2036] unto them [846], Why [5101] do ye [4160] that which [3739] is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to do [4160] on [1722] the sabbath days [4521]?
3 And [2532] Jesus [2424] answering [611] them [4314] [846] said [2036], Have ye [314] not [3761] read [314] so much as [3761] this [5124], what [3739] David [1138] did [4160], when [3698] himself [846] was an hungred [3983], and [2532] they which [3588] were [5607] with [3326] him [846];
4 How [5613] he went [1525] into [1519] the house [3624] of God [2316], and [2532] did take [2983] and [2532] eat [5315] the shewbread [740] [4286], and [2532] gave [1325] also [2532] to them that were with [3326] him [846]; which [3739] it is [1832] not [3756] lawful [1832] to eat [5315] but for [1508] the priests [2409] alone [3441]?
5 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], That [3754] the Son [5207] of man [444] is [2076] Lord [2962] also [2532] of the sabbath [4521].
3 But [1161] he said [2036] unto them [846], Have ye [314] not [3756] read [314] what [5101] David [1138] did [4160], when [3753] he [846] was an hungred [3983], and [2532] they [3326] that were with him [846];
4 How [4459] he entered into [1525] [1519] the house [3624] of God [2316], and [2532] did eat [5315] the shewbread [740] [4286], which [3739] was [2258] not [3756] lawful [1832] for him [846] to eat [5315], neither for [3761] them which [3326] were with him [846], but [1508] only [3441] for the priests [2409]?
4 For [1063] he spake [2046] in a certain place [4225] of [4012] the seventh [1442] day on this wise [3779], And [2532] God [2316] did rest [2664] the seventh [1722] [1442] day [2250] from [575] all [3956] his [846] works [2041].
16 Let [2919] no [3361] man [5100] therefore [3767] judge [2919] you [5209] in [1722] meat [1035], or [2228] in [1722] drink [4213], or [2228] in [1722] respect [3313] of an holyday [1859], or [2228] of the new moon [3561], or [2228] of the sabbath [4521] days:
23 And it shall come to pass, that from [01767] one new moon [02320] to another [02320], and from [01767] one sabbath [07676] to another [07676], shall all flesh [01320] come [0935] to worship [07812] before [06440] me, saith [0559] the LORD [03068].
27 And [2532] he said [3004] unto them [846], The sabbath [4521] was made [1096] for [1223] man [444], and not [3756] man [444] for [1223] the sabbath [4521]:
25 And on the seventh [07637] day [03117] ye shall have an holy [06944] convocation [04744]; ye shall do [06213] no servile [05656] work [04399].
8 But ye shall offer [07126] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068] seven [07651] days [03117]: in the seventh [07637] day [03117] is an holy [06944] convocation [04744]: ye shall do [06213] no servile [05656] work [04399] therein.
3 Six [08337] days [03117] shall work [04399] be done [06213]: but the seventh [07637] day [03117] is the sabbath [07676] of rest [07677], an holy [06944] convocation [04744]; ye shall do [06213] no work [04399] therein: it is the sabbath [07676] of the LORD [03068] in all your dwellings [04186].
16 And in the first [07223] day [03117] there shall be an holy [06944] convocation [04744], and in the seventh [07637] day [03117] there shall be an holy [06944] convocation [04744] to you; no manner of work [04399] shall be done [06213] in them, save [0389] that which every man [05315] must eat [0398], that only may be done [06213] of you.
9 And on the sabbath [07676] day [03117] two [08147] lambs [03532] of the first [01121] year [08141] without spot [08549], and two [08147] tenth [06241] deals of flour [05560] for a meat offering [04503], mingled [01101] with oil [08081], and the drink offering [05262] thereof:
32 And while the children [01121] of Israel [03478] were in the wilderness [04057], they found [04672] a man [0376] that gathered [07197] sticks [06086] upon the sabbath [07676] day [03117].
33 And they that found [04672] him gathering [07197] sticks [06086] brought [07126] him unto Moses [04872] and Aaron [0175], and unto all the congregation [05712].
34 And they put [03240] him in ward [04929], because it was not declared [06567] what should be done [06213] to him.
35 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Moses [04872], The man [0376] shall be surely [04191] put to death [04191]: all the congregation [05712] shall stone [07275] him with stones [068] without [02351] the camp [04264].
36 And all the congregation [05712] brought [03318] him without [02351] the camp [04264], and stoned [07275] him with stones [068], and he died [04191]; as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] Moses [04872].
2 Six [08337] days [03117] shall work [04399] be done [06213], but on the seventh [07637] day [03117] there shall be to you an holy day [06944], a sabbath [07676] of rest [07677] to the LORD [03068]: whosoever doeth [06213] work [04399] therein shall be put to death [04191].
3 Ye shall kindle [01197] no fire [0784] throughout your habitations [04186] upon the sabbath [07676] day [03117].
13 Speak [01696] thou also unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], saying [0559], Verily [0389] my sabbaths [07676] ye shall keep [08104]: for it is a sign [0226] between me and you throughout your generations [01755]; that ye may know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068] that doth sanctify [06942] you.
14 Ye shall keep [08104] the sabbath [07676] therefore; for it is holy [06944] unto you: every one that defileth [02490] it shall surely [04191] be put to death [04191]: for whosoever doeth [06213] any work [04399] therein, that soul [05315] shall be cut off [03772] from among [07130] his people [05971].
15 Six [08337] days [03117] may work [04399] be done [06213]; but in the seventh [07637] is the sabbath [07676] of rest [07677], holy [06944] to the LORD [03068]: whosoever doeth [06213] any work [04399] in the sabbath [07676] day [03117], he shall surely [04191] be put to death [04191].
16 Wherefore the children [01121] of Israel [03478] shall keep [08104] the sabbath [07676], to observe [06213] the sabbath [07676] throughout their generations [01755], for a perpetual [05769] covenant [01285].
17 It is a sign [0226] between me and the children [01121] of Israel [03478] for ever [05769]: for in six [08337] days [03117] the LORD [03068] made [06213] heaven [08064] and earth [0776], and on the seventh [07637] day [03117] he rested [07673], and was refreshed [05314].
8 Remember [02142] the sabbath [07676] day [03117], to keep it holy [06942].
9 Six [08337] days [03117] shalt thou labour [05647], and do [06213] all thy work [04399]:
10 But the seventh [07637] day [03117] is the sabbath [07676] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430]: in it thou shalt not do [06213] any work [04399], thou, nor thy son [01121], nor thy daughter [01323], thy manservant [05650], nor thy maidservant [0519], nor thy cattle [0929], nor thy stranger [01616] that is within thy gates [08179]:
11 For in six [08337] days [03117] the LORD [03068] made [06213] heaven [08064] and earth [0776], the sea [03220], and all that in them is, and rested [05117] the seventh [07637] day [03117]: wherefore the LORD [03068] blessed [01288] the sabbath [07676] day [03117], and hallowed [06942] it.
13 Thou camest down [03381] also upon mount [02022] Sinai [05514], and spakest [01696] with them from heaven [08064], and gavest [05414] them right [03477] judgments [04941], and true [0571] laws [08451], good [02896] statutes [02706] and commandments [04687]:
14 And madest known [03045] unto them thy holy [06944] sabbath [07676], and commandedst [06680] them precepts [04687], statutes [02706], and laws [08451], by the hand [03027] of Moses [04872] thy servant [05650]:
23 And he said [0559] unto them, This is that which the LORD [03068] hath said [01696], To morrow [04279] is the rest [07677] of the holy [06944] sabbath [07676] unto the LORD [03068]: bake [0644] that which ye will bake [0644] to day, and seethe [01310] that ye will seethe [01310]; and that which [03605] remaineth over [05736] lay up [03240] for you to be kept [04931] until the morning [01242].
2 And on the seventh [07637] day [03117] God [0430] ended [03615] his work [04399] which he had made [06213]; and he rested [07673] on the seventh [07637] day [03117] from all his work [04399] which he had made [06213].
3 And God [0430] blessed [01288] the seventh [07637] day [03117], and sanctified [06942] it: because [03588] that in it he had rested [07673] from all his work [04399] which God [0430] created [01254] and made [06213].
17 Ye shall bring out [0935] of your habitations [04186] two [08147] wave [08573] loaves [03899] of two [08147] tenth deals [06241]: they shall be of fine flour [05560]; they shall be baken [0644] with leaven [02557]; they are the firstfruits [01061] unto the LORD [03068].
7 In the first [07223] day [03117] ye shall have an holy [06944] convocation [04744]: ye shall do [06213] no servile [05656] work [04399] therein.
11 And he shall wave [05130] the sheaf [06016] before [06440] the LORD [03068], to be accepted [07522] for you: on the morrow [04283] after the sabbath [07676] the priest [03548] shall wave [05130] it.
