remnant of Jacob--already mentioned in Mic 5:3. It in comparative smallness stands in antithesis to the "many people." Though Israel be but a remnant amidst many nations after her restoration, yet she shall exercise the same blessed influence in quickening them spiritually that the small imperceptible dew exercises in refreshing the grass (Deu 32:2; Psa 72:6; Psa 110:3). The influence of the Jews restored from Babylon in making many Gentile proselytes is an earnest of a larger similar effect hereafter (Isa 66:19; Zac 8:13).
from the Lord--Israel's restoration and the consequent conversion of the Gentiles are solely of grace.
tarrieth not for man--entirely God's work, as independent of human contrivance as the dew and rains that fertilize the soil. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
And the remnant of Jacob - Micah (Mic 4:7), as well as Isaiah (Isa 10:21), had prophesied, that a remnant only should return unto the Mighty God. These, though very many in themselves, are yet but a remnant only of the unconverted mass; yet this, "the remnant, who shall be saved" Rom 9:27, who believe in Christ, "the little flock" Luk 12:32, of whom were the Apostles and their disciples, "shall be, in the midst of many people," whom they won to the faith, as John in Asia, Thomas in India, Peter in Babylon and Rome, Paul well-nigh in the whole world, what? something to be readily swallowed up by their multitude? No, but "as a dew from the Lord, as the showers from the grass, which tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men," quickening to life that, which, like soon-withered (see Psa 102:5, Psa 102:12; Kg2 19:26; Isa 37:27) grass, no human cultivation, no human help, could reach.
In the Gospel and the grace of Christ there are both, gentleness and might; softness, as the dew, might as of a lion. For "Wisdom reacheth from one end to another mightily; and sweetly doth she order all things" . The dew is, in Holy Scripture, a symbol of divine doctrine. "My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass" Deu 32:2. The dew comes down from heaven, is of heavenly not of earthly birth, transparent, glistening with light, reflecting the hues of heaven, gentle, slight, weak in itself, refreshing, cooling the strong heats of the day (Ecclesiasticus 18:16; 43:22), consumed itself, yet thereby preserving life, falling on the dry and withered grass wherein all nature droops, and recalling it to freshness of life. And still more in those lands, where from the beginning of April to the end of October, the close of the latter and the beginning of the early rain, during all the hot months of summer, the life of all herbage depends upon the dew alone . "Showers" are so called from the "multitude" of drops, slight and of no account in themselves, descending noiselessly yet penetrating the more deeply.
So did the Apostles "bedew the souls of believers with the word of godliness and enrich them abundantly with the words of the Gospel," themselves dying, and the Church living the more through their death Co2 4:12, quenching the fiery heat of passions, and watering the dry and barren soil, that it might bring forth fruits unto Christ. Yet, they say, "the excellency of the power was of God and not of us" Co2 4:7. and "God gave the increase" Co1 3:6-7. For neither was their doctrine "of man nor by man" Gal 1:12; but it came from heaven, the Holy Spirit teaching them invisibly and making unlearned and ignorant men mighty inward and deed. Rup.: "Whence these and these alone the Church of Christ looks up to, as furnishing the rule of truth." Rib.: "The herb, upon which this dew falleth, groweth to God without any aid of man, and flourisheth, and needeth neither doctrines of philosophers, nor the rewards or praises of men." |

remnant
The ministry of the Jewish remnant (Isa 1:9).
(See Scofield) - (Rom 11:5)
has a twofold aspect, "a dew from the Lord"; "a lion among the beasts." Turning to the Lord in the great tribulation (Psa 2:5).
(See Scofield) - (Rev 7:14),
the remnant takes up the beautiful gospel of the kingdom.
(See Scofield) - (Rev 14:6)
and proclaims it under awful persecution "unto all nations, for a witness." (Mat 24:14). The result is seen in (Rev 7:4-14) This is the "dew" aspect, and is followed by the "day of the Lord"; (Isa 2:10-22); (Rev 19:11-21). In the morning of which the kingdom is set up in power. Again there is a world-wide preaching to Jew and Gentile, but now it is the word that the King is on His holy hill of Zion (Psalm 2), and the unrepentant will be broken with His rod of iron. (Psa 2:6-9). The preaching is given in (Psa 2:10-12). This is the "lion" aspect of the remnant's testimony. (Rev 2:26-28). The full kingdom-age of blessing follows the "rod of iron" aspect. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
But the Messiah will prove Himself to be peace to His people, not only by the fact that He protects and saves it from the attacks of the imperial power represented by Asshur, but also by the fact that He endows His rescuing people with the power to overcome their enemies, both spiritually and bodily also. Mic 5:7. "And the remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many nations like dew from Jehovah, like drops of rain upon grass, which tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for children of men. Mic 5:8. And the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many nations, like the lion among the beasts of the forest, like the young lion among the flocks of sheep; which, when it goes through, treads down, and tears in pieces, without deliverer. Mic 5:9. High be thy hand above thine oppressors, and may all thine enemies be rooted out." Two things are predicted here. In the first place (Mic 5:7), Israel will come upon many nations, like a refreshing dew from Jehovah, which falls plentifully in drops upon the grass, and will produce and promote new and vigorous life among them. Dew is here, as indeed everywhere else, a figurative expression for refreshing, stimulating, enlivening (cf. Psa 110:3; Psa 133:3, and Psa 72:6; Hos 14:6; Deu 33:2). The spiritual dew, which Jacob will bring to the nations, comes from Jehovah, and falls in rich abundance without the cooperation of men. Without the spiritual dew from above, the nations are grass (cf. Isa 40:6-8). אשׁר before לא יקוּה does not refer to עשׂב, but to the principal idea of the preceding clause, viz., to טל, to which the explanatory כּרביבים וגו is subordinate. As the falling of the dew in rain-drops upon the grass does not depend upon the waiting of men, but proceeds from Jehovah; so will the spiritual blessing, which will flow over from Israel upon the nations, not depend upon the waiting of the nations, but will flow to them against and beyond their expectation. This does not deny the fact that the heathen wait for the salvation of Jehovah, but simply expresses the thought that the blessings will not be measured by their expectation. Secondly (Mic 5:8, Mic 5:9), the rescued Israel will prove itself a terrible power among the nations, and one to which they will be obliged to succumb. No proof is needed that Mic 5:8, Mic 5:9 do not state in what way Israel will refresh the heathen, as Hitzig supposes. The refreshing dew and the rending lion cannot possibly be synonymous figures. The similarity of the introduction to Mic 5:7 and Mic 5:8 points of itself to something new. To the nations Christ is set for the rising and falling of many (compare Luk 2:34; Rom 9:33, with Isa 8:14 and Isa 28:16). The people of God shows itself like a lion, trampling and rending the sheep among the nations of the world which oppose its beneficent work. And over these may it triumph. This wish (târōm is optative) closes the promise of the attitude which Israel will assume among the nations of the world. For târōm yâd (high be the hand), compare Isa 26:11. High is the hand which accomplishes mighty deeds, which smites and destroys the foe. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
As a dew - This remnant wherever they are, shall multiply as the dew that refreshes the grass, so where this remnant is, it shall be a blessing to those about them, that use them friendly. As the showers - God shall bless them by his immediate hand, as he alone, without the help of man, gives dew and showers. As this was fulfilled in the type, before the gospel was preached to all nations, so it hath been, now is, and ever shall be fulfilled in ages to come. God's remnant shall be a blessing to the places they live in. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
The remnant of Jacob - From the reign of Darius Hystaspes (Ahasuerus, husband of Esther) the Jews were greatly favored. Those who continued in Persia and Chaldea were greatly honored under the protection of Mordecai and Esther. - Calmet. But others consider this as applying to the Maccabees.
As a dew from the Lord - Even during their captivity many of the Jews were the means of spreading the knowledge of the one true God; see Dan 2:47; Dan 3:29; Dan 4:34; Dan 6:26. This may be the dew from the Lord mentioned here. When the Messiah appeared, the Gospel was preached by them; and it shall again be propagated by their future glorious restoration, Rom 11:12, Rom 11:25.
The grass, that tarrieth not for man - Which grass springs up without the attention and culture of man; לאיש leish, even the best and most skillful of men.
Nor waiteth for the sons of men - לבני אדם libney adam, for the sons of Adam, the first transgressor. The dew and the showers descend on the earth and water it, in order to render it fruitful; and the grass springs up independently either of the worth or wickedness of man. All comes through God's bounty, who causes his sun to shine on the just and the unjust, and his rain to descend on the evil and the good. |
13 And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse [07045] among the heathen [01471], O house [01004] of Judah [03063], and house [01004] of Israel [03478]; so will I save [03467] you, and ye shall be a blessing [01293]: fear [03372] not, but let your hands [03027] be strong [02388].
19 And I will set [07760] a sign [0226] among them, and I will send [07971] those that escape [06412] of them unto the nations [01471], to Tarshish [08659], Pul [06322], and Lud [03865], that draw [04900] the bow [07198], to Tubal [08422], and Javan [03120], to the isles [0339] afar off [07350], that have not heard [08085] my fame [08088], neither have seen [07200] my glory [03519]; and they shall declare [05046] my glory [03519] among the Gentiles [01471].
3 Thy people [05971] shall be willing [05071] in the day [03117] of thy power [02428], in the beauties [01926] of holiness [06944] from the womb [07358] of the morning [04891]: thou hast the dew [02919] of thy youth [03208].
6 He shall come down [03381] like rain [04306] upon the mown [01488] grass: as showers [07241] that water [02222] the earth [0776].
2 My doctrine [03948] shall drop [06201] as the rain [04306], my speech [0565] shall distil [05140] as the dew [02919], as the small rain [08164] upon the tender herb [01877], and as the showers [07241] upon the grass [06212]:
3 Therefore will he give them up [05414], until the time [06256] that she which travaileth [03205] hath brought forth [03205]: then the remnant [03499] of his brethren [0251] shall return [07725] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
12 For [1063] I [1473] neither [3761] received [3880] it [846] of [3844] man [444], neither [3777] was I taught [1321] it, but [235] by [1223] the revelation [602] of Jesus [2424] Christ [5547].
6 I [1473] have planted [5452], Apollos [625] watered [4222]; but [235] God [2316] gave the increase [837].
7 So [5620] then neither [3777] is [2076] he that planteth [5452] any thing [5100], neither [3777] he that watereth [4222]; but [235] God [2316] that giveth the increase [837].
7 But [1161] we have [2192] this [5126] treasure [2344] in [1722] earthen [3749] vessels [4632], that [2443] the excellency [5236] of the power [1411] may be [5600] of God [2316], and [2532] not [3361] of [1537] us [2257].
12 So [5620] then [3303] death [2288] worketh [1754] in [1722] us [2254], but [1161] life [2222] in [1722] you [5213].
2 My doctrine [03948] shall drop [06201] as the rain [04306], my speech [0565] shall distil [05140] as the dew [02919], as the small rain [08164] upon the tender herb [01877], and as the showers [07241] upon the grass [06212]:
27 Therefore their inhabitants [03427] were of small [07116] power [03027], they were dismayed [02865] and confounded [0954]: they were as the grass [06212] of the field [07704], and as the green [03419] herb [01877], as the grass [02682] on the housetops [01406], and as corn blasted [07709] before [06440] it be grown up [07054].
26 Therefore their inhabitants [03427] were of small [07116] power [03027], they were dismayed [02865] and confounded [0954]; they were as the grass [06212] of the field [07704], and as the green [03419] herb [01877], as the grass [02682] on the housetops [01406], and as corn blasted [07711] before [06440] it be grown up [07054].
12 But thou, O LORD [03068], shalt endure [03427] for ever [05769]; and thy remembrance [02143] unto all [01755] generations [01755].
5 By reason of the voice [06963] of my groaning [0585] my bones [06106] cleave [01692] to my skin [01320].
32 Fear [5399] not [3361], little [3398] flock [4168]; for [3754] it is [2106] your [5216] Father's [3962] good pleasure [2106] to give [1325] you [5213] the kingdom [932].
27 Esaias [2268] also [1161] crieth [2896] concerning [5228] Israel [2474], Though [1437] the number [706] of the children [5207] of Israel [2474] be [5600] as [5613] the sand [285] of the sea [2281], a remnant [2640] shall be saved [4982]:
21 The remnant [07605] shall return [07725], even the remnant [07605] of Jacob [03290], unto the mighty [01368] God [0410].
7 And I will make [07760] her that halted [06760] a remnant [07611], and her that was cast far off [01972] a strong [06099] nation [01471]: and the LORD [03068] shall reign [04427] over them in mount [02022] Zion [06726] from henceforth, even for [05704] ever [05769].
26 And [2532] he that overcometh [3528], and [2532] keepeth [5083] my [3450] works [2041] unto [891] the end [5056], to him [846] will I give [1325] power [1849] over [1909] the nations [1484]:
27 And [2532] he shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]; as [5613] the vessels [4632] of a potter [2764] shall they be broken to shivers [4937]: even [2504] as [5613] I [2504] received [2983] of [3844] my [3450] Father [3962].
28 And [2532] I will give [1325] him [846] the morning [4407] star [792].
10 Be wise [07919] now therefore, O ye kings [04428]: be instructed [03256], ye judges [08199] of the earth [0776].
11 Serve [05647] the LORD [03068] with fear [03374], and rejoice [01523] with trembling [07461].
12 Kiss [05401] the Son [01248], lest he be angry [0599], and ye perish [06] from the way [01870], when his wrath [0639] is kindled [01197] but a little [04592]. Blessed [0835] are all they that put their trust [02620] in him.
6 Yet have I set [05258] my king [04428] upon my holy [06944] hill [02022] of Zion [06726].
7 I will declare [05608] the decree [02706]: the LORD [03068] hath said [0559] unto me, Thou art my Son [01121]; this day [03117] have I begotten [03205] thee.
8 Ask [07592] of me, and I shall give [05414] thee the heathen [01471] for thine inheritance [05159], and the uttermost parts [0657] of the earth [0776] for thy possession [0272].
9 Thou shalt break [07489] them with a rod [07626] of iron [01270]; thou shalt dash them in pieces [05310] like a potter's [03335] vessel [03627].
11 And [2532] I saw [1492] heaven [3772] opened [455], and [2532] behold [2400] a white [3022] horse [2462]; and [2532] he that sat [2521] upon [1909] him [846] was called [2564] Faithful [4103] and [2532] True [228], and [2532] in [1722] righteousness [1343] he doth judge [2919] and [2532] make war [4170].
12 [1161] His [846] eyes [3788] were as [5613] a flame [5395] of fire [4442], and [2532] on [1909] his [846] head [2776] were many [4183] crowns [1238]; and he had [2192] a name [3686] written [1125], that [3739] no man [3762] knew [1492], but [1508] he himself [846].
13 And [2532] he was clothed [4016] with a vesture [2440] dipped [911] in blood [129]: and [2532] his [846] name [3686] is called [2564] The Word [3056] of God [2316].
14 And [2532] the armies [4753] which were [3588] in [1722] heaven [3772] followed [190] him [846] upon [1909] white [3022] horses [2462], clothed [1746] in fine linen [1039], white [3022] and [2532] clean [2513].
15 And [2532] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750] goeth [1607] a sharp [3691] sword [4501], that [2443] with [1722] it [846] he should smite [3960] the nations [1484]: and [2532] he [846] shall rule [4165] them [846] with [1722] a rod [4464] of iron [4603]: and [2532] he [846] treadeth [3961] the winepress [3025] [3631] of the fierceness [2372] and [2532] wrath [3709] of Almighty [3841] God [2316].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
17 And [2532] I saw [1492] an [1520] angel [32] standing [2476] in [1722] the sun [2246]; and [2532] he cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004] to all [3956] the fowls [3732] that fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], Come [1205] and [2532] gather yourselves together [4863] unto [1519] the supper [1173] of the great [3173] God [2316];
18 That [2443] ye may eat [5315] the flesh [4561] of kings [935], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of captains [5506], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of mighty men [2478], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of horses [2462], and [2532] of them that sit [2521] on [1909] them [846], and [2532] the flesh [4561] of all [3956] men, both free [1658] and [2532] bond [1401], both [2532] small [3398] and [2532] great [3173].
19 And [2532] I saw [1492] the beast [2342], and [2532] the kings [935] of the earth [1093], and [2532] their [846] armies [4753], gathered together [4863] to make [4160] war [4171] against [3326] him that sat [2521] on [1909] the horse [2462], and [2532] against [3326] his [846] army [4753].
20 And [2532] the beast [2342] was taken [4084], and [2532] with [3326] him [5127] the false prophet [5578] that wrought [4160] miracles [4592] before [1799] him [846], with [1722] which [3739] he deceived [4105] them that had received [2983] the mark [5480] of the beast [2342], and [2532] them that worshipped [4352] his [846] image [1504]. These both [1417] were cast [906] alive [2198] into [1519] a lake [3041] of fire [4442] burning [2545] with [1722] brimstone [2303].
21 And [2532] the remnant [3062] were slain [615] with [1722] the sword [4501] of him that sat [2521] upon [1909] the horse [2462], which [3588] sword proceeded [1607] out of [1537] his [846] mouth [4750]: and [2532] all [3956] the fowls [3732] were filled [5526] with [1537] their [846] flesh [4561].
10 Enter [0935] into the rock [06697], and hide [02934] thee in the dust [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347].
11 The lofty [01365] looks [05869] of man [0120] shall be humbled [08213], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be bowed down [07817], and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
12 For the day [03117] of the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] shall be upon every one that is proud [01343] and lofty [07311], and upon every one that is lifted up [05375]; and he shall be brought low [08213]:
13 And upon all the cedars [0730] of Lebanon [03844], that are high [07311] and lifted up [05375], and upon all the oaks [0437] of Bashan [01316],
14 And upon all the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon all the hills [01389] that are lifted up [05375],
15 And upon every high [01364] tower [04026], and upon every fenced [01219] wall [02346],
16 And upon all the ships [0591] of Tarshish [08659], and upon all pleasant [02532] pictures [07914].
17 And the loftiness [01365] of man [0120] shall be bowed down [07817], and the haughtiness [07312] of men [0582] shall be made low [08213]: and the LORD [03068] alone shall be exalted [07682] in that day [03117].
18 And the idols [0457] he shall utterly [03632] abolish [02498].
19 And they shall go [0935] into the holes [04631] of the rocks [06697], and into the caves [04247] of the earth [06083], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
20 In that day [03117] a man [0120] shall cast [07993] his idols [0457] of silver [03701], and his idols [0457] of gold [02091], which they made each one for himself [06213] to worship [07812], to the moles [02661] [06512] and to the bats [05847];
21 To go [0935] into the clefts [05366] of the rocks [06697], and into the tops [05585] of the ragged rocks [05553], for [06440] fear [06343] of the LORD [03068], and for the glory [01926] of his majesty [01347], when he ariseth [06965] to shake terribly [06206] the earth [0776].
22 Cease [02308] ye from man [0120], whose breath [05397] is in his nostrils [0639]: for wherein is he to be accounted of [02803]?
4 And [2532] I heard [191] the number [706] of them which were sealed [4972]: and there were sealed [4972] an hundred [1540] and forty [5062] and four [5064] thousand [5505] of [1537] all [3956] the tribes [5443] of the children [5207] of Israel [2474].
5 Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Juda [2455] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Reuben [4502] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Gad [1045] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505].
6 Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Aser [768] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Nepthalim [3508] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Manasses [3128] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505].
7 Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Simeon [4826] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Levi [3017] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Issachar [2466] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505].
8 Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Zabulon [2194] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Joseph [2501] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505]. Of [1537] the tribe [5443] of Benjamin [958] were sealed [4972] twelve [1427] thousand [5505].
9 After [3326] this [5023] I beheld [1492], and [2532], lo [2400], a great [4183] multitude [3793], which [3739] no man [3762] could [1410] number [705] [846], of [1537] all [3956] nations [1484], and [2532] kindreds [5443], and [2532] people [2992], and [2532] tongues [1100], stood [2476] before [1799] the throne [2362], and [2532] before [1799] the Lamb [721], clothed [4016] with white [3022] robes [4749], and [2532] palms [5404] in [1722] their [846] hands [5495];
10 And [2532] cried [2896] with a loud [3173] voice [5456], saying [3004], Salvation [4991] to our [2257] God [2316] which [3588] sitteth [2521] upon [1909] the throne [2362], and [2532] unto the Lamb [721].
11 And [2532] all [3956] the angels [32] stood [2476] round about [2945] the throne [2362], and [2532] about the elders [4245] and [2532] the four [5064] beasts [2226], and [2532] fell [4098] before [1799] the throne [2362] on [1909] their [846] faces [4383], and [2532] worshipped [4352] God [2316],
12 Saying [3004], Amen [281]: Blessing [2129], and [2532] glory [1391], and [2532] wisdom [4678], and [2532] thanksgiving [2169], and [2532] honour [5092], and [2532] power [1411], and [2532] might [2479], be unto our [2257] God [2316] for [1519] ever [165] and ever [165]. Amen [281].
13 And [2532] one [1520] of [1537] the elders [4245] answered [611], saying [3004] unto me [3427], What [5101] are [1526] these [3778] which [3588] are arrayed in [4016] white [3022] robes [4749]? and [2532] whence [4159] came they [2064]?
14 And [2532] I said [2046] unto him [846], Sir [2962], thou [4771] knowest [1492]. And [2532] he said [2036] to me [3427], These [3778] are they [1526] which came [2064] out of [1537] great [3173] tribulation [2347], and [2532] have washed [4150] their [846] robes [4749], and [2532] made [3021] them [4749] [846] white [3021] in [1722] the blood [129] of the Lamb [721].
14 And [2532] this [5124] gospel [2098] of the kingdom [932] shall be preached [2784] in [1722] all [3650] the world [3625] for [1519] a witness [3142] unto all [3956] nations [1484]; and [2532] then [5119] shall the end [5056] come [2240].
6 And [2532] I saw [1492] another [243] angel [32] fly [4072] in [1722] the midst of heaven [3321], having [2192] the everlasting [166] gospel [2098] to preach [2097] unto them that dwell [2730] on [1909] the earth [1093], and [2532] to every [3956] nation [1484], and [2532] kindred [5443], and [2532] tongue [1100], and [2532] people [2992],
14 And [2532] I said [2046] unto him [846], Sir [2962], thou [4771] knowest [1492].
5 Then shall he speak [01696] unto them in his wrath [0639], and vex [0926] them in his sore displeasure [02740].
5 Even so [3779] then [3767] at [1722] this present [3568] time [2540] also [2532] there is [1096] a remnant [3005] according [2596] to the election [1589] of grace [5485].
9 Except [03884] the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635] had left [03498] unto us a very small [04592] remnant [08300], we should have been [01961] as Sodom [05467], and we should have been like [01819] unto Gomorrah [06017].
11 LORD [03068], when thy hand [03027] is lifted up [07311], they will not see [02372]: but they shall see [02372], and be ashamed [0954] for their envy [07068] at the people [05971]; yea, the fire [0784] of thine enemies [06862] shall devour [0398] them.
16 Therefore thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], Behold, I lay [03245] in Zion [06726] for a foundation a stone [068], a tried [0976] stone [068], a precious [03368] corner [06438] stone, a sure [03245] foundation [04143]: he that believeth [0539] shall not make haste [02363].
14 And he shall be for a sanctuary [04720]; but for a stone [068] of stumbling [05063] and for a rock [06697] of offence [04383] to both [08147] the houses [01004] of Israel [03478], for a gin [06341] and for a snare [04170] to the inhabitants [03427] of Jerusalem [03389].
33 As [2531] it is written [1125], Behold [2400], I lay [5087] in [1722] Sion [4622] a stumblingstone [3037] [4348] and [2532] rock [4073] of offence [4625]: and [2532] whosoever [3956] believeth [4100] on [1909] him [846] shall [2617] not [3756] be ashamed [2617].
34 And [2532] Simeon [4826] blessed [2127] them [846], and [2532] said [2036] unto [4314] Mary [3137] his [846] mother [3384], Behold [2400], this [3778] child is set [2749] for [1519] the fall [4431] and [2532] rising again [386] of many [4183] in [1722] Israel [2474]; and [2532] for [1519] a sign [4592] which shall be spoken against [483];
8 And the remnant [07611] of Jacob [03290] shall be among the Gentiles [01471] in the midst [07130] of many [07227] people [05971] as a lion [0738] among the beasts [0929] of the forest [03293], as a young lion [03715] among the flocks [05739] of sheep [06629]: who, if he go through [05674], both treadeth down [07429], and teareth in pieces [02963], and none can deliver [05337].
7 And the remnant [07611] of Jacob [03290] shall be in the midst [07130] of many [07227] people [05971] as a dew [02919] from the LORD [03068], as the showers [07241] upon the grass [06212], that tarrieth [06960] not for man [0376], nor waiteth [03176] for the sons [01121] of men [0120].
9 Thine hand [03027] shall be lifted up [07311] upon thine adversaries [06862], and all thine enemies [0341] shall be cut off [03772].
9 Thine hand [03027] shall be lifted up [07311] upon thine adversaries [06862], and all thine enemies [0341] shall be cut off [03772].
6 The voice [06963] said [0559], Cry [07121]. And he said [0559], What shall I cry [07121]? All flesh [01320] is grass [02682], and all the goodliness [02617] thereof is as the flower [06731] of the field [07704]:
7 The grass [02682] withereth [03001], the flower [06731] fadeth [05034]: because the spirit [07307] of the LORD [03068] bloweth [05380] upon it: surely [0403] the people [05971] is grass [02682].
8 The grass [02682] withereth [03001], the flower [06731] fadeth [05034]: but the word [01697] of our God [0430] shall stand [06965] for ever [05769].
2 And he said [0559], The LORD [03068] came [0935] from Sinai [05514], and rose up [02224] from Seir [08165] unto them; he shined forth [03313] from mount [02022] Paran [06290], and he came [0857] with ten thousands [07233] of saints [06944]: from his right hand [03225] went a fiery [0799] [0784] law [01881] for them.
6 His branches [03127] shall spread [03212], and his beauty [01935] shall be as the olive tree [02132], and his smell [07381] as Lebanon [03844].
6 He shall come down [03381] like rain [04306] upon the mown [01488] grass: as showers [07241] that water [02222] the earth [0776].
3 As the dew [02919] of Hermon [02768], and as the dew that descended [03381] upon the mountains [02042] of Zion [06726]: for there the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] the blessing [01293], even life [02416] for evermore [05769].
3 Thy people [05971] shall be willing [05071] in the day [03117] of thy power [02428], in the beauties [01926] of holiness [06944] from the womb [07358] of the morning [04891]: thou hast the dew [02919] of thy youth [03208].
25 For [1063] I would [2309] not [3756], brethren [80], that ye [5209] should be ignorant [50] of this [5124] mystery [3466], lest [3363] ye should be [5600] wise [5429] in [3844] your own conceits [1438]; that [3754] blindness [4457] in [575] part [3313] is happened [1096] to Israel [2474], until [891] [3739] the fulness [4138] of the Gentiles [1484] be come in [1525].
12 Now [1161] if [1487] the fall [3900] of them [846] be the riches [4149] of the world [2889], and [2532] the diminishing [2275] of them [846] the riches [4149] of the Gentiles [1484]; how [4214] much more [3123] their [846] fulness [4138]?
26 I [04481] [06925] make [07761] a decree [02942], That in every [03606] dominion [07985] of my kingdom [04437] men tremble [01934] [02112] and fear [01763] before [04481] [06925] the God [0426] of Daniel [01841]: for he is the living [02417] God [0426], and stedfast [07011] for ever [05957], and his kingdom [04437] that which shall not [03809] be destroyed [02255], and his dominion [07985] shall be even unto [05705] the end [05491].
34 And at the end [07118] of the days [03118] I [0576] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] lifted up [05191] mine eyes [05870] unto heaven [08065], and mine understanding [04486] returned [08421] unto me [05922], and I blessed [01289] the most High [05943], and I praised [07624] and honoured [01922] him that liveth [02417] for ever [05957], whose dominion [07985] is an everlasting [05957] dominion [07985], and his kingdom [04437] is from [05974] generation [01859] to generation [01859]:
29 Therefore I [04481] make [07761] a decree [02942], That every [03606] people [05972], nation [0524], and language [03961], which speak [0560] any thing amiss [07960] [07955] against [05922] the God [0426] of Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], shall be cut [05648] in pieces [01917], and their houses [01005] shall be made [07739] a dunghill [05122]: because [06903] [03606] there is [0383] no [03809] other [0321] God [0426] that can [03202] deliver [05338] after this [01836] sort.
47 The king [04430] answered [06032] unto Daniel [01841], and said [0560], Of [04481] a truth [07187] it is, that [01768] your God [0426] is a God [0426] of gods [0426], and a Lord [04756] of kings [04430], and a revealer [01541] of secrets [07328], seeing thou couldest [03202] reveal [01541] this [01836] secret [07328].
