A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
pant after . . . dust of . . . earth on . . . head of . . . poor--that is, eagerly thirst for this object, by their oppression to prostrate the poor so as to cast the dust on their heads in mourning on the earth (compare Sa2 1:2; Job 2:12; Eze 27:30).

turn aside . . . way of . . . meek--pervert their cause (Amo 5:12; Job 24:4 [GROTIUS]; Isa 10:2).

a man and his father--a crime "not so much as named among the Gentiles" (Co1 5:1). When God's people sin in the face of light, they often fall lower than even those who know not God.

go in unto the same maid--from Amo 2:8 it seems likely "the damsel" meant is one of the prostitutes attached to the idol Astarte's temple: prostitution being part of her filthy worship.

to profane my . . . name--Israel in such abominations, as it were, designedly seeks to insult God.

8 And they lay themselves down [05186] upon clothes [0899] laid to pledge [02254] by [0681] every altar [04196], and they drink [08354] the wine [03196] of the condemned [06064] in the house [01004] of their god [0430].
1 It is reported [191] commonly [3654] that there is fornication [4202] among [1722] you [5213], and [2532] such [5108] fornication [4202] as [3748] is [3687] not so much [3761] as named [3687] among [1722] the Gentiles [1484], that [5620] one [5100] should have [2192] his father's [3962] wife [1135].
2 To turn aside [05186] the needy [01800] from judgment [01779], and to take away [01497] the right [04941] from the poor [06041] of my people [05971], that widows [0490] may be their prey [07998], and that they may rob [0962] the fatherless [03490]!
4 They turn [05186] the needy [034] out of the way [01870]: the poor [06041] [06035] of the earth [0776] hide [02244] themselves together [03162].
12 For I know [03045] your manifold [07227] transgressions [06588] and your mighty [06099] sins [02403]: they afflict [06887] the just [06662], they take [03947] a bribe [03724], and they turn aside [05186] the poor [034] in the gate [08179] from their right.
30 And shall cause their voice [06963] to be heard [08085] against thee, and shall cry [02199] bitterly [04751], and shall cast up [05927] dust [06083] upon their heads [07218], they shall wallow [06428] themselves in the ashes [0665]:
12 And when they lifted up [05375] their eyes [05869] afar off [07350], and knew [05234] him not, they lifted up [05375] their voice [06963], and wept [01058]; and they rent [07167] every one [0376] his mantle [04598], and sprinkled [02236] dust [06083] upon their heads [07218] toward heaven [08064].
2 It came even to pass on the third [07992] day [03117], that, behold, a man [0376] came [0935] out of the camp [04264] from Saul [07586] with his clothes [0899] rent [07167], and earth [0127] upon his head [07218]: and so it was, when he came [0935] to David [01732], that he fell [05307] to the earth [0776], and did obeisance [07812].
19 And will ye pollute [02490] me among my people [05971] for handfuls [08168] of barley [08184] and for pieces [06595] of bread [03899], to slay [04191] the souls [05315] that should not die [04191], and to save [02421] the souls [05315] alive [02421] that should not live [02421], by your lying [03576] to my people [05971] that hear [08085] your lies [03577]?
23 And I will sanctify [06942] my great [01419] name [08034], which was profaned [02490] among the heathen [01471], which ye have profaned [02490] in the midst [08432] of them; and the heathen [01471] shall know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], saith [05002] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069], when I shall be sanctified [06942] in you before their eyes [05869].
24 For [1063] the name [3686] of God [2316] is blasphemed [987] among [1722] the Gentiles [1484] through [1223] you [5209], as [2531] it is written [1125].
14 Howbeit [0657], because by this deed [01697] thou hast given [05006] great occasion [05006] to the enemies [0341] of the LORD [03068] to blaspheme [05006], the child [01121] also that is born [03209] unto thee shall surely [04191] die [04191].
4 Ah [01945] sinful [02398] nation [01471], a people [05971] laden [03515] with iniquity [05771], a seed [02233] of evildoers [07489], children [01121] that are corrupters [07843]: they have forsaken [05800] [0853] the LORD [03068], they have provoked [05006] [0853] the Holy One [06918] of Israel [03478] unto anger [05006], they are gone away [02114] backward [0268].
4 They have set up kings [04427], but not by me: they have made princes [07786], and I knew [03045] it not: of their silver [03701] and their gold [02091] have they made [06213] them idols [06091], that they may be cut off [03772].
35 But were mingled [06148] among the heathen [01471], and learned [03925] their works [04639].
6 They shall be holy [06944] unto their God [0430], and not profane [02490] the name [08034] of their God [0430]: for the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801], and the bread [03899] of their God [0430], they do offer [07126]: therefore they shall be holy [06918].
21 And thou shalt not [05414] let any of thy seed [02233] pass [05674] through the fire to Molech [04432], neither shalt thou profane [02490] the name [08034] of thy God [0430]: I am the LORD [03068].
3 And I will set [05414] my face [06440] against that man [0376], and will cut him off [03772] from among [07130] his people [05971]; because he hath given [05414] of his seed [02233] unto Molech [04432], to defile [02930] my sanctuary [04720], and to profane [02490] my holy [06944] name [08034].
31 Therefore shall ye keep [08104] my commandments [04687], and do [06213] them: I am the LORD [03068].
32 Neither shall ye profane [02490] my holy [06944] name [08034]; but I will be hallowed [06942] among [08432] the children [01121] of Israel [03478]: I am the LORD [03068] which hallow [06942] you,
1 It is reported [191] commonly [3654] that there is fornication [4202] among [1722] you [5213], and [2532] such [5108] fornication [4202] as [3748] is [3687] not so much [3761] as named [3687] among [1722] the Gentiles [1484], that [5620] one [5100] should have [2192] his father's [3962] wife [1135].
14 I will not punish [06485] your daughters [01323] when they commit whoredom [02181], nor your spouses [03618] when they commit adultery [05003]: for themselves are separated [06504] with whores [02181], and they sacrifice [02076] with harlots [06948]: therefore the people [05971] that doth not understand [0995] shall fall [03832].
15 Thou shalt not uncover [01540] the nakedness [06172] of thy daughter in law [03618]: she is thy son's [01121] wife [0802]; thou shalt not uncover [01540] her nakedness [06172].
8 The nakedness [06172] of thy father's [01] wife [0802] shalt thou not uncover [01540]: it is thy father's [01] nakedness [06172].
29 But I am poor [06041] and sorrowful [03510]: let thy salvation [03444], O God [0430], set me up on high [07682].
27 But [235] God [2316] hath chosen [1586] the foolish things [3474] of the world [2889] to [2443] confound [2617] the wise [4680]; and [2532] God [2316] hath chosen [1586] the weak things [772] of the world [2889] to [2443] confound [2617] the things which are mighty [2478];
28 And [2532] base things [36] of the world [2889], and [2532] things which are despised [1848], hath [1586] God [2316] chosen [1586], yea, and [2532] things which [3588] are [5607] not [3361], to [2443] bring to nought [2673] things that are [5607]:
14 But [1161] ye [5210] denied [720] the Holy One [40] and [2532] the Just [1342], and [2532] desired [154] a murderer [5406] [435] to be granted [5483] unto you [5213];
29 Take [142] my [3450] yoke [2218] upon [1909] you [5209], and [2532] learn [3129] of [575] me [1700]; for [3754] I am [1510] meek [4235] and [2532] lowly [5011] in heart [2588]: and [2532] ye shall find [2147] rest [372] unto your [5216] souls [5590].
15 Neither shall he stand [05975] that handleth [08610] the bow [07198]; and he that is swift [07031] of foot [07272] shall not deliver [04422] himself: neither shall he that rideth [07392] the horse [05483] deliver [04422] himself [05315].
12 But ye gave the Nazarites [05139] wine [03196] to drink [08248]; and commanded [06680] the prophets [05030], saying [0559], Prophesy [05012] not.
6 Thou shalt not wrest [05186] the judgment [04941] of thy poor [034] in his cause [07379].
3 Neither shalt thou countenance [01921] a poor [01800] man in his cause [07379].
23 A wicked [07563] man taketh [03947] a gift [07810] out of the bosom [02436] to pervert [05186] the ways [0734] of judgment [04941].
