SIN OFFERING FOR THE PRIEST. (Lev. 4:3-35)
If the priest that is anointed do sin--that is, the high priest, in whom, considering his character as typical mediator, and his exalted office, the people had the deepest interest; and whose transgression of any part of the divine law, therefore, whether done unconsciously or heedlessly, was a very serious offense, both as regarded himself individually, and the influence of his example. He is the person principally meant, though the common order of the priesthood was included.
according to the sin of the people--that is, bring guilt on the people. He was to take a young bullock (the age and sex being expressly mentioned), and having killed it according to the form prescribed for the burnt offerings, he was to take it into the holy place and sprinkle the atoning blood seven times before the veil, and tip with the crimson fluid the horns of the golden altar of incense, on his way to the court of the priests,--a solemn ceremonial appointed only for very grave and heinous offenses, and which betokened that his sin, though done in ignorance, had vitiated all his services; nor could any official duty he engaged in be beneficial either to himself or the people, unless it were atoned for by blood. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The priest that is anointed - i. e. the high priest. (Compare Lev 8:12; Lev 21:10; Exo 29:7). On the anointing of the other priests see the note at Lev 8:13.
The graduation of the sin-offerings is remarkable. It might seem that the distinction addressed itself more pointedly to each individual according to his rank and consequent responsibility (see Lev 4:32).
According to the sin of the people - Rather, to bring guilt on the people. The whole nation is concerned in every transgression of its representative. |
The Scofield Bible Commentary, by Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, [1917] |
sin-offering
The sin-offering, though still Christ, is Christ seen laden with the believer's sin, absolutely in the sinner's place and stead, and not, as in the sweet savour offerings, in His own perfections. It is Christ's death as viewed in (Isa 53:1-12); (Psa 22:1-31); (Mat 26:28); (Pe1 2:24); (Pe1 3:18).
But note (Lev 6:24-30) how the essential holiness of Him who was "made sin for us" (Co2 5:21) is guarded. The sin-offerings are expiatory, substitutional, efficacious (Lev 4:12); (Lev 4:29); (Lev 4:35) and have in view the vindication of the law through substitutional sacrifice. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The sin of the high priest. - The high priest is here called the "anointed priest" (Lev 4:3, Lev 4:5, Lev 4:16, Lev 6:15) on account of the completeness of the anointing with which he was consecrated to his office (Lev 8:12); in other places he is called the great (or high) priest (Lev 21:10; Num 35:25, etc.), and by later writers הראשׁ כּהן, the priest the head, or head priest (Kg2 25:18; Ch2 19:11). If he sinned העם לאשׁמת, "to the sinning of the nation," i.e., in his official position as representative of the nation before the Lord, and not merely in his own personal relation to God, he was to offer for a sin-offering because of his sin an ox without blemish, the largest of all the sacrificial animals, because he filled the highest post in Israel.
Lev 4:4-7
The presentation, laying on of hands, and slaughtering, were the same as in the case of the other sacrifices (Lev 1:3-5). The first peculiarity occurs in connection with the blood (Lev 4:5-7). The anointed priest was to take (a part) of the blood and carry it into the tabernacle, and having dipped his finger in it, to sprinkle some of it seven times before Jehovah "in the face of the vail of the Holy" (Exo 26:31), i.e., in the direction towards the curtain; after that, he was to put (נתן) some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of incense, and then to pour out the great mass of the blood, of which only a small portion had been used for sprinkling and smearing upon the horns of the altar, at the bottom of the altar of burnt-offering. A sevenfold sprinkling "in the face of the vail" also took place in connection with the sin-offering for the whole congregation, as well as with the ox and he-goat which the high priest offered as sin-offerings on the day of atonement for himself, the priesthood, and the congregation, when the blood was sprinkled seven times before (לפני) the capporeth (Lev 16:14), and seven times upon the horns of the altar (Lev 16:18-19). So too the blood of the red cow, that was slaughtered as a sin-offering outside the camp, was sprinkled seven times in the direction towards the tabernacle (Num 19:4). The sevenfold sprinkling at the feast of atonement had respect to the purification of the sanctuary from the blemishes caused by the sins of the people, with which they had been defiled in the course of the year (see at ch. 16), and did not take place till after the blood had been sprinkled once "against (? upon) the capporeth in front" for the expiation of the sin of the priesthood and people, and the horns of the altar had been smeared with the blood (Lev 16:14, Lev 16:18); whereas in the sin-offerings mentioned in this chapter, the sevenfold sprinkling preceded the application of the blood to the horns of the altar. This difference in the order of succession of the two manipulations with the blood leads to the conclusion, that in the case before us the sevenfold sprinkling had a different signification from that which it had on the day atonement, and served as a preliminary and introduction to the expiation. The blood also was not sprinkled upon the altar of the holy place, but only before Jehovah, against the curtain behind which Jehovah was enthroned, that is to say, only into the neighbourhood of the gracious presence of God; and this act was repeated seven times, that in the number seven, as the stamp of the covenant, the covenant relation, which sin had loosened, might be restored. It was not till after this had been done, that the expiatory blood of the sacrifice was put upon the horns of the altar, - not merely sprinkled or swung against the wall of the altar, but smeared upon the horns of the altar; not, however, that the blood might thereby be brought more prominently before the eyes of God, or lifted up into His more immediate presence, as Hoffmann and Knobel suppose, but because the significance of the altar, as the scene of the manifestation of the divine grace and salvation, culminated in the horns, as the symbols of power and might. In the case of the sin-offerings for the high priest and the congregation, the altar upon which this took place was not the altar of burnt-offering in the court, but the altar of incense in the holy place; because both the anointed priest, by virtue of his calling and consecration as the mediator between the nation and the Lord, and the whole congregation, by virtue of its election as a kingdom of priests (Exo 19:6), were to maintain communion with the covenant God in the holy place, the front division of the dwelling-place of Jehovah, and were thus received into a closer relation of fellowship with Jehovah than the individual members of the nation, for whom the court with its altar was the divinely appointed place of communion with the covenant God. The remainder of the blood, which had not been used in the act of expiation, was poured out at the bottom of the altar of burnt-offering, as the holy place to which all the sacrificial blood was to be brought, that it might be received into the earth.
Lev 4:8-10
The priest was to lift off "all the fat" from the sacrificial animal, i.e., the same fat portions as in the peace-offering (Lev 3:3-4, כּל־חלב is the subject to יוּרם in Lev 3:10), and burn it upon the altar of burnt-offering.
Lev 4:11-12
The skin of the bullock, and all the flesh, together with the head and the shank and the entrails (Lev 1:9) and the foeces, in fact the whole bullock, was to be carried out by him (the sacrificing priest) to a clean place before the camp, to which the ashes of the sacrifices were carried from the ash-heap (Lev 1:16), and there burnt on the wood with fire. (On the construction of Lev 4:11 and Lev 4:12 see Ges. 145, 2).
The different course, adopted with the blood and flesh of the sin-offerings, from that prescribed in the ritual of the other sacrifices, was founded upon the special signification of these offerings. As they were presented to effect the expiation of sins, the offerer transferred the consciousness of sin and the desire for forgiveness to the head of the animal that had been brought in his stead, by the laying on of his hand; and after this the animal was slaughtered, and suffered death for him as the wages of sin. But as sin is not wiped out by the death of the sinner, unless it be forgiven by the grace of God, so devoting to death an animal laden with sin rendered neither a real nor symbolical satisfaction or payment for sin, by which the guilt of it could be wiped away; but the death which it endured in the sinner's stead represented merely the fruit and effect of sin. To cover the sinner from the holiness of God because of his sin, some of the blood of the sacrifice was sprinkled seven times before Jehovah in the holy place; and the covenant fellowship, which had been endangered, was thereby restored. After this, however, the soul, which was covered in the sacrificial blood, was given up to the grace of God that prevailed in the altar, by means of the sprinkling of the blood upon the horns of the altar of incense, that it might receive the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God, and the full enjoyment of the blessings of the covenant be ensured to it once more. But the sin, that had been laid upon the animal of the sin-offering, lay upon it still. The next thing done, therefore, was to burn the fat portions of its inside upon the altar of burnt-offering. Now, if the flesh of the victim represented the body of the offerer as the organ of his soul, the fat portions inside the body, together with the kidneys, which were regarded as the seat of the tenderest and deepest emotions, can only have set forth the better part or inmost kernel of the man, the ἔσω ἄνθρωπος (Rom 7:22; Eph 3:16). By burning the fat portions upon the altar, the better part of human nature was given up in symbol to the purifying fire of the Holy Spirit of God, that it might be purified from the dross of sin, and ascend in its glorified essence to heaven, for a sweet savour unto the Lord (Lev 4:31). The flesh of the sin-offering, however, or "the whole bullock," was then burned in a clean place outside the camp, though not merely that it might be thereby destroyed in a clean way, like the flesh provided for the sacrificial meals, which had not been consumed at the time fixed by the law (Lev 7:17; Lev 8:32; Lev 19:6; Exo 12:10; Exo 29:34), or the flesh of the sacrifices, which had been defiled by contact with unclean objects (Lev 7:19); for if the disposal of the flesh formed an integral part of the sacrificial ceremony in the case of all the other sacrifices, and if, in the case of the sin-offerings, the blood of which was not brought into the interior of the sanctuary, the priests were to eat the flesh in a holy place, and that not "as a portion assigned to them by God as an honourable payment," but, according to the express declaration of Moses, "to bear and take away (לשׂאת) the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them" (Lev 10:17), the burning of the flesh of the sin-offerings, i.e., of the animal itself, the blood of which was not brought into the holy place, cannot have been without significance, or simply the means adopted to dispose of it in a fitting manner, but must also have formed one factor in the ceremony of expiation. The burning outside the camp was rendered necessary, because the sacrifice had respect to the expiation of the priesthood, and the flesh or body of the bullock, which had been made חטּאת by the laying on of the hand, could not be eaten by the priests as the body of sin, that by the holiness of their official character they might bear and expiate the sin imputed to the sacrifice (see at Lev 10:17). In this case it was necessary that it should be given up to the effect of sin, viz., to death or destruction by fire, and that outside the camp; in other words, outside the kingdom of God, from which everything dead was removed. But, inasmuch as it was sacrificial flesh, and therefore most holy by virtue of its destination; in order that it might not be made an abomination, it was not to be burned in an unclean place, where carrion and other abominations were thrown (Lev 14:40, Lev 14:45), but in the clean place, outside the camp, to which the ashes of the altar of burnt-offering were removed, as being the earthly sediment and remains of the sacrifices that had ascended to God in the purifying flames of the altar-fire.
(Note: The most holy character of the flesh of the sin-offering (Lev 6:18.) furnishes no valid argument against the correctness of this explanation of the burning; for, in the first place, there is an essential difference between real or inherent sin, and sin imputed or merely transferred; and secondly, the flesh of the sin-offering was called most holy, not in a moral, but only in a liturgical or ritual sense, as subservient to the most holy purpose of wiping away sin; on which account it was to be entirely removed from all appropriation to earthly objects. Moreover, the idea that sin was imputed to the sin-offering, that it was made sin by the laying on of the hand, has a firm basis in the sacrifice of the red cow (Num 19), and also occurs among the Greeks (see Oehler in Herzog's Cycl.).) |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
If the priest - That is, the high - priest, who only was anointed after the first time. His anointing is mentioned, because he was not compleat high - priest 'till he was anointed. Do sin - Either in doctrine or practice, which it is here supposed he may do. And this is noted as a character of imperfection in the priesthood of the law, whereby the Israelites were directed to expect another and better high - priest, even one who is holy, harmless, and separate from sinners, Heb 7:26. According to the sin of the people - In the same manner as any of the people do; which implies that God expected more circumspection from him, than from the people. But the words may be rendered, to the sin or guilt of the people, which may be mentioned as an aggrevation of his sin, that by it he commonly brings sin, and guilt, and punishment upon the people, who are infected or scandalized by his example. A young bullock - The same sacrifice which was offered for all the people, to shew how much his sin was aggravated by his quality. Sin - offering - Heb. sin, which word is oft taken in that sense. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
If the priest that is anointed - Meaning, most probably, the high priest. According to the sin of the people; for although he had greater advantages than the people could have, in being more conversant with the law of God, and his lips should understand and preserve knowledge, yet it was possible even for him, in that time in which the word of God had not been fully revealed, to transgress through ignorance; and his transgression might have the very worst tendency, because the people might be thereby led into sin. Hence several critics understand this passage in this way, and translate it thus: If the anointed priest shall lead the people to sin; or, literally, if the anointed priest shall sin to the sin of the people; that is, so as to cause the people to transgress, the shepherd going astray, and the sheep following after him. |
32 And if he bring [0935] a lamb [03532] for a sin [02403] offering [07133], he shall bring [0935] it a female [05347] without blemish [08549].
13 And Moses [04872] brought [07126] Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], and put [03847] coats [03801] upon them, and girded [02296] them with girdles [073], and put [02280] bonnets [04021] upon them; as the LORD [03068] commanded [06680] Moses [04872].
7 Then shalt thou take [03947] the anointing [04888] oil [08081], and pour [03332] it upon his head [07218], and anoint [04886] him.
10 And he that is the high [01419] priest [03548] among his brethren [0251], upon whose head [07218] the anointing [04888] oil [08081] was poured [03332], and that is consecrated [04390] [03027] to put [03847] on the garments [0899], shall not uncover [06544] his head [07218], nor rend [06533] his clothes [0899];
12 And he poured [03332] of the anointing [04888] oil [08081] upon Aaron's [0175] head [07218], and anointed [04886] him, to sanctify [06942] him.
35 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] of the lamb [03775] is taken away [05493] from the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196], according to the offerings made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for his sin [02403] that he hath committed [02398], and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
29 And he shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the sin offering [02403], and slay [07819] the sin offering [02403] in the place [04725] of the burnt offering [05930].
12 Even the whole bullock [06499] shall he carry forth [03318] without [02351] the camp [04264] unto a clean [02889] place [04725], where the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211], and burn [08313] him on the wood [06086] with fire [0784]: where [0413] the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211] shall he be burnt [08313].
21 For [1063] he hath made [4160] him to be sin [266] for [5228] us [2257], who [3588] knew [1097] no [3361] sin [266]; that [2443] we [2249] might be made [1096] the righteousness [1343] of God [2316] in [1722] him [846].
24 And the LORD [03068] spake [01696] unto Moses [04872], saying [0559],
25 Speak [01696] unto Aaron [0175] and to his sons [01121], saying [0559], This is the law [08451] of the sin offering [02403]: In the place [04725] where the burnt offering [05930] is killed [07819] shall the sin offering [02403] be killed [07819] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: it is most [06944] holy [06944].
26 The priest [03548] that offereth it for sin [02398] shall eat [0398] it: in the holy [06918] place [04725] shall it be eaten [0398], in the court [02691] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
27 Whatsoever shall touch [05060] the flesh [01320] thereof shall be holy [06942]: and when there is sprinkled [05137] of the blood [01818] thereof upon any garment [0899], thou shalt wash [03526] that whereon it was sprinkled [05137] in the holy [06918] place [04725].
28 But the earthen [02789] vessel [03627] wherein it is sodden [01310] shall be broken [07665]: and if it be sodden [01310] in a brasen [05178] pot [03627], it shall be both scoured [04838], and rinsed [07857] in water [04325].
29 All the males [02145] among the priests [03548] shall eat [0398] thereof: it is most [06944] holy [06944].
30 And no sin offering [02403], whereof any of the blood [01818] is brought [0935] into the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] to reconcile [03722] withal in the holy [06944] place, shall be eaten [0398]: it shall be burnt [08313] in the fire [0784].
18 For [3754] Christ [5547] also [2532] hath once [530] suffered [3958] for [4012] sins [266], the just [1342] for [5228] the unjust [94], that [2443] he might bring [4317] us [2248] to God [2316], being put to death [2289] [3303] in the flesh [4561], but [1161] quickened [2227] by the Spirit [4151]:
24 Who [3739] his own self [846] bare [399] our [2257] sins [266] in [1722] his own [846] body [4983] on [1909] the tree [3586], that [2443] we [2198], being dead [581] to sins [266], should live [2198] unto righteousness [1343]: by [3739] whose [846] stripes [3468] ye were healed [2390].
28 For [1063] this [5124] is [2076] my [3450] blood [129] of the new [2537] testament [1242], which [3588] is shed [1632] for [4012] many [4183] for [1519] the remission [859] of sins [266].
1 To the chief Musician [05329] upon Aijeleth [0365] Shahar [07837], A Psalm [04210] of David [01732]. My God [0410], my God [0410], why hast thou forsaken [05800] me? why art thou so far [07350] from helping [03444] me, and from the words [01697] of my roaring [07581]?
2 O my God [0430], I cry [07121] in the daytime [03119], but thou hearest [06030] not; and in the night season [03915], and am not silent [01747].
3 But thou art holy [06918], O thou that inhabitest [03427] the praises [08416] of Israel [03478].
4 Our fathers [01] trusted [0982] in thee: they trusted [0982], and thou didst deliver [06403] them.
5 They cried [02199] unto thee, and were delivered [04422]: they trusted [0982] in thee, and were not confounded [0954].
6 But I am a worm [08438], and no man [0376]; a reproach [02781] of men [0120], and despised [0959] of the people [05971].
7 All they that see [07200] me laugh me to scorn [03932]: they shoot out [06358] the lip [08193], they shake [05128] the head [07218], saying,
8 He trusted [01556] on the LORD [03068] that he would deliver [06403] him: let him deliver [05337] him, seeing he delighted [02654] in him.
9 But thou art he that took [01518] me out of the womb [0990]: thou didst make me hope [0982] when I was upon my mother's [0517] breasts [07699].
10 I was cast [07993] upon thee from the womb [07358]: thou art my God [0410] from my mother's [0517] belly [0990].
11 Be not far [07368] from me; for trouble [06869] is near [07138]; for there is none to help [05826].
12 Many [07227] bulls [06499] have compassed [05437] me: strong [047] bulls of Bashan [01316] have beset me round [03803].
13 They gaped [06475] upon me with their mouths [06310], as a ravening [02963] and a roaring [07580] lion [0738].
14 I am poured out [08210] like water [04325], and all my bones [06106] are out of joint [06504]: my heart [03820] is like wax [01749]; it is melted [04549] in the midst [08432] of my bowels [04578].
15 My strength [03581] is dried up [03001] like a potsherd [02789]; and my tongue [03956] cleaveth [01692] to my jaws [04455]; and thou hast brought [08239] me into the dust [06083] of death [04194].
16 For dogs [03611] have compassed [05437] me: the assembly [05712] of the wicked [07489] have inclosed [05362] me: they pierced [03738] [0738] my hands [03027] and my feet [07272].
17 I may tell [05608] all my bones [06106]: they look [05027] and stare [07200] upon me.
18 They part [02505] my garments [0899] among them, and cast [05307] lots [01486] upon my vesture [03830].
19 But be not thou far [07368] from me, O LORD [03068]: O my strength [0360], haste [02363] thee to help [05833] me.
20 Deliver [05337] my soul [05315] from the sword [02719]; my darling [03173] from the power [03027] of the dog [03611].
21 Save [03467] me from the lion's [0738] mouth [06310]: for thou hast heard [06030] me from the horns [07161] of the unicorns [07214].
22 I will declare [05608] thy name [08034] unto my brethren [0251]: in the midst [08432] of the congregation [06951] will I praise [01984] thee.
23 Ye that fear [03373] the LORD [03068], praise [01984] him; all ye the seed [02233] of Jacob [03290], glorify [03513] him; and fear [01481] him, all ye the seed [02233] of Israel [03478].
24 For he hath not despised [0959] nor abhorred [08262] the affliction [06039] of the afflicted [06041]; neither hath he hid [05641] his face [06440] from him; but when he cried [07768] unto him, he heard [08085].
25 My praise [08416] shall be of thee in the great [07227] congregation [06951]: I will pay [07999] my vows [05088] before them that fear [03373] him.
26 The meek [06035] shall eat [0398] and be satisfied [07646]: they shall praise [01984] the LORD [03068] that seek [01875] him: your heart [03824] shall live [02421] for ever [05703].
27 All the ends [0657] of the world [0776] shall remember [02142] and turn [07725] unto the LORD [03068]: and all the kindreds [04940] of the nations [01471] shall worship [07812] before [06440] thee.
28 For the kingdom [04410] is the LORD'S [03068]: and he is the governor [04910] among the nations [01471].
29 All they that be fat [01879] upon earth [0776] shall eat [0398] and worship [07812]: all they that go down [03381] to the dust [06083] shall bow [03766] before [06440] him: and none can keep alive [02421] his own soul [05315].
30 A seed [02233] shall serve [05647] him; it shall be accounted [05608] to the Lord [0136] for a generation [01755].
31 They shall come [0935], and shall declare [05046] his righteousness [06666] unto a people [05971] that shall be born [03205], that he hath done [06213] this.
1 Who hath believed [0539] our report [08052]? and to whom is the arm [02220] of the LORD [03068] revealed [01540]?
2 For he shall grow up [05927] before [06440] him as a tender plant [03126], and as a root [08328] out of a dry [06723] ground [0776]: he hath no form [08389] nor comeliness [01926]; and when we shall see [07200] him, there is no beauty [04758] that we should desire [02530] him.
3 He is despised [0959] and rejected [02310] of men [0376]; a man [0376] of sorrows [04341], and acquainted [03045] with grief [02483]: and we hid as it were [04564] our faces [06440] from him; he was despised [0959], and we esteemed [02803] him not.
4 Surely [0403] he hath borne [05375] our griefs [02483], and carried [05445] our sorrows [04341]: yet we did esteem [02803] him stricken [05060], smitten [05221] of God [0430], and afflicted [06031].
5 But he was wounded [02490] for our transgressions [06588], he was bruised [01792] for our iniquities [05771]: the chastisement [04148] of our peace [07965] was upon him; and with his stripes [02250] we are healed [07495].
6 All we like sheep [06629] have gone astray [08582]; we have turned [06437] every one [0376] to his own way [01870]; and the LORD [03068] hath laid [06293] on him the iniquity [05771] of us all.
7 He was oppressed [05065], and he was afflicted [06031], yet he opened [06605] not his mouth [06310]: he is brought [02986] as a lamb [07716] to the slaughter [02874], and as a sheep [07353] before [06440] her shearers [01494] is dumb [0481], so he openeth [06605] not his mouth [06310].
8 He was taken [03947] from prison [06115] and from judgment [04941]: and who shall declare [07878] his generation [01755]? for he was cut off [01504] out of the land [0776] of the living [02416]: for the transgression [06588] of my people [05971] was he stricken [05061].
9 And he made [05414] his grave [06913] with the wicked [07563], and with the rich [06223] in his death [04194]; because he had done [06213] no violence [02555], neither was any deceit [04820] in his mouth [06310].
10 Yet it pleased [02654] the LORD [03068] to bruise [01792] him; he hath put him to grief [02470]: when thou shalt make [07760] his soul [05315] an offering for sin [0817], he shall see [07200] his seed [02233], he shall prolong [0748] his days [03117], and the pleasure [02656] of the LORD [03068] shall prosper [06743] in his hand [03027].
11 He shall see [07200] of the travail [05999] of his soul [05315], and shall be satisfied [07646]: by his knowledge [01847] shall my righteous [06662] servant [05650] justify [06663] many [07227]; for he shall bear [05445] their iniquities [05771].
12 Therefore will I divide [02505] him a portion with the great [07227], and he shall divide [02505] the spoil [07998] with the strong [06099]; because he hath poured out [06168] his soul [05315] unto death [04194]: and he was numbered [04487] with the transgressors [06586]; and he bare [05375] the sin [02399] of many [07227], and made intercession [06293] for the transgressors [06586].
18 All the males [02145] among the children [01121] of Aaron [0175] shall eat [0398] of it. It shall be a statute [02706] for ever [05769] in your generations [01755] concerning the offerings [0801] of the LORD [03068] made by fire [0801]: every one that toucheth [05060] them shall be holy [06942].
45 And he shall break down [05422] the house [01004], the stones [068] of it, and the timber [06086] thereof, and all the morter [06083] of the house [01004]; and he shall carry them forth [03318] out [02351] of the city [05892] into an unclean [02931] place [04725].
40 Then the priest [03548] shall command [06680] that they take [02502] away the stones [068] in which [02004] the plague [05061] is, and they shall cast [07993] [0853] them into an unclean [02931] place [04725] without [02351] the city [05892]:
17 Wherefore have ye not eaten [0398] the sin offering [02403] in the holy [06944] place [04725], seeing it is most [06944] holy [06944], and God hath given [05414] it you to bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the congregation [05712], to make atonement [03722] for them before [06440] the LORD [03068]?
17 Wherefore have ye not eaten [0398] the sin offering [02403] in the holy [06944] place [04725], seeing it is most [06944] holy [06944], and God hath given [05414] it you to bear [05375] the iniquity [05771] of the congregation [05712], to make atonement [03722] for them before [06440] the LORD [03068]?
19 And the flesh [01320] that toucheth [05060] any unclean [02931] thing shall not be eaten [0398]; it shall be burnt [08313] with fire [0784]: and as for the flesh [01320], all that be clean [02889] shall eat [0398] thereof.
34 And if ought of the flesh [01320] of the consecrations [04394], or of the bread [03899], remain [03498] unto the morning [01242], then thou shalt burn [08313] the remainder [03498] with fire [0784]: it shall not be eaten [0398], because it is holy [06944].
10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain [03498] until the morning [01242]; and that which remaineth [03498] of it until the morning [01242] ye shall burn [08313] with fire [0784].
6 It shall be eaten [0398] the same day [03117] ye offer [02077] it, and on the morrow [04283]: and if ought remain [03498] until the third [07992] day [03117], it shall be burnt [08313] in the fire [0784].
32 And that which remaineth [03498] of the flesh [01320] and of the bread [03899] shall ye burn [08313] with fire [0784].
17 But the remainder [03498] of the flesh [01320] of the sacrifice [02077] on the third [07992] day [03117] shall be burnt [08313] with fire [0784].
31 And he shall take away [05493] all the fat [02459] thereof, as the fat [02459] is taken away [05493] from off the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]; and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068]; and the priest [03548] shall make an atonement [03722] for him, and it shall be forgiven [05545] him.
16 That [2443] he would grant [1325] you [5213], according to [2596] the riches [4149] of his [846] glory [1391], to be strengthened [2901] with might [1411] by [1223] his [846] Spirit [4151] in [1519] the inner [2080] man [444];
22 For [1063] I delight [4913] in the law [3551] of God [2316] after [2596] the inward [2080] man [444]:
12 Even the whole bullock [06499] shall he carry forth [03318] without [02351] the camp [04264] unto a clean [02889] place [04725], where the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211], and burn [08313] him on the wood [06086] with fire [0784]: where [0413] the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211] shall he be burnt [08313].
11 And the skin [05785] of the bullock [06499], and all his flesh [01320], with his head [07218], and with his legs [03767], and his inwards [07130], and his dung [06569],
16 And he shall pluck away [05493] his crop [04760] with his feathers [05133], and cast [07993] it beside [0681] the altar [04196] on the east part [06924], by the place [04725] of the ashes [01880]:
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
11 And the skin [05785] of the bullock [06499], and all his flesh [01320], with his head [07218], and with his legs [03767], and his inwards [07130], and his dung [06569],
12 Even the whole bullock [06499] shall he carry forth [03318] without [02351] the camp [04264] unto a clean [02889] place [04725], where the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211], and burn [08313] him on the wood [06086] with fire [0784]: where [0413] the ashes [01880] are poured out [08211] shall he be burnt [08313].
10 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
3 And he shall offer [07126] of the sacrifice [02077] of the peace offering [08002] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]; the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and all the fat [02459] that is upon the inwards [07130],
4 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is on them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493].
8 And he shall take off [07311] from it all the fat [02459] of the bullock [06499] for the sin offering [02403]; the fat [02459] that covereth [03680] the inwards [07130], and all the fat [02459] that is upon the inwards [07130],
9 And the two [08147] kidneys [03629], and the fat [02459] that is upon them, which is by the flanks [03689], and the caul [03508] above the liver [03516], with the kidneys [03629], it shall he take away [05493],
10 As it was taken off [07311] from the bullock [07794] of the sacrifice [02077] of peace offerings [08002]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] them upon the altar [04196] of the burnt offering [05930].
6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom [04467] of priests [03548], and an holy [06918] nation [01471]. These are the words [01697] which thou shalt speak [01696] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
18 And he shall go out [03318] unto the altar [04196] that is before [06440] the LORD [03068], and make an atonement [03722] for it; and shall take [03947] of the blood [01818] of the bullock [06499], and of the blood [01818] of the goat [08163], and put [05414] it upon the horns [07161] of the altar [04196] round about [05439].
14 And he shall take [03947] of the blood [01818] of the bullock [06499], and sprinkle [05137] it with his finger [0676] upon the mercy seat [03727] eastward [06924]; and before [06440] the mercy seat [03727] shall he sprinkle [05137] of the blood [01818] with his finger [0676] seven [07651] times [06471].
4 And Eleazar [0499] the priest [03548] shall take [03947] of her blood [01818] with his finger [0676], and sprinkle [05137] of her blood [01818] directly [05227] before [06440] the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] seven [07651] times [06471]:
18 And he shall go out [03318] unto the altar [04196] that is before [06440] the LORD [03068], and make an atonement [03722] for it; and shall take [03947] of the blood [01818] of the bullock [06499], and of the blood [01818] of the goat [08163], and put [05414] it upon the horns [07161] of the altar [04196] round about [05439].
19 And he shall sprinkle [05137] of the blood [01818] upon it with his finger [0676] seven [07651] times [06471], and cleanse [02891] it, and hallow [06942] it from the uncleanness [02932] of the children [01121] of Israel [03478].
31 And thou shalt make [06213] a vail [06532] of blue [08504], and purple [0713], and scarlet [08144] [08438], and fine twined [07806] linen [08336] of cunning [02803] work [04639]: with cherubims [03742] shall it be made [06213]:
5 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall take [03947] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818], and bring [0935] it to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
6 And the priest [03548] shall dip [02881] his finger [0676] in the blood [01818], and sprinkle [05137] of the blood [01818] seven [07651] times [06471] before [06440] the LORD [03068], before [06440] the vail [06532] of the sanctuary [06944].
7 And the priest [03548] shall put [05414] some of the blood [01818] upon the horns [07161] of the altar [04196] of sweet [05561] incense [07004] before [06440] the LORD [03068], which is in the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]; and shall pour [08210] all the blood [01818] of the bullock [06499] at the bottom [03247] of the altar [04196] of the burnt offering [05930], which is at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
3 If his offering [07133] be a burnt sacrifice [05930] of the herd [01241], let him offer [07126] a male [02145] without blemish [08549]: he shall offer [07126] it of his own voluntary will [07522] at the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
4 And he shall put [05564] his hand [03027] upon the head [07218] of the burnt offering [05930]; and it shall be accepted [07521] for him to make atonement [03722] for him.
5 And he shall kill [07819] the bullock [01121] [01241] before [06440] the LORD [03068]: and the priests [03548], Aaron's [0175] sons [01121], shall bring [07126] the blood [01818], and sprinkle [02236] the blood [01818] round about [05439] upon the altar [04196] that is by the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150].
4 And he shall bring [0935] the bullock [06499] unto the door [06607] of the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150] before [06440] the LORD [03068]; and shall lay [05564] his hand [03027] upon the bullock's [06499] head [07218], and kill [07819] the bullock [06499] before [06440] the LORD [03068].
11 And, behold, Amariah [0568] the chief [07218] priest [03548] is over you in all matters [01697] of the LORD [03068]; and Zebadiah [02069] the son [01121] of Ishmael [03458], the ruler [05057] of the house [01004] of Judah [03063], for all the king's [04428] matters [01697]: also the Levites [03881] shall be officers [07860] before [06440] you. Deal [06213] courageously [02388], and the LORD [03068] shall be with the good [02896].
18 And the captain [07227] of the guard [02876] took [03947] Seraiah [08304] the chief [07218] priest [03548], and Zephaniah [06846] the second [04932] priest [03548], and the three [07969] keepers [08104] of the door [05592]:
25 And the congregation [05712] shall deliver [05337] the slayer [07523] out of the hand [03027] of the revenger [01350] of blood [01818], and the congregation [05712] shall restore [07725] him to the city [05892] of his refuge [04733], whither he was fled [05127]: and he shall abide [03427] in it unto the death [04194] of the high [01419] priest [03548], which was anointed [04886] with the holy [06944] oil [08081].
10 And he that is the high [01419] priest [03548] among his brethren [0251], upon whose head [07218] the anointing [04888] oil [08081] was poured [03332], and that is consecrated [04390] [03027] to put [03847] on the garments [0899], shall not uncover [06544] his head [07218], nor rend [06533] his clothes [0899];
12 And he poured [03332] of the anointing [04888] oil [08081] upon Aaron's [0175] head [07218], and anointed [04886] him, to sanctify [06942] him.
15 And he shall take [07311] of it his handful [07062], of the flour [05560] of the meat offering [04503], and of the oil [08081] thereof, and all the frankincense [03828] which is upon the meat offering [04503], and shall burn [06999] it upon the altar [04196] for a sweet [05207] savour [07381], even the memorial [0234] of it, unto the LORD [03068].
16 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall bring [0935] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818] to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
5 And the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] shall take [03947] of the bullock's [06499] blood [01818], and bring [0935] it to the tabernacle [0168] of the congregation [04150]:
3 If the priest [03548] that is anointed [04899] do sin [02398] according to the sin [0819] of the people [05971]; then let him bring [07126] for his sin [02403], which he hath sinned [02398], a young [01241] [01121] bullock [06499] without blemish [08549] unto the LORD [03068] for a sin offering [02403].
26 For [1063] such [5108] an high priest [749] became [4241] us [2254], who is holy [3741], harmless [172], undefiled [283], separate [5563] from [575] sinners [268], and [2532] made [1096] higher than [5308] the heavens [3772];
