Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
when a man shall sanctify his house to be holy unto the Lord, &c.--In this case, the house having been valued by the priest and sold, the proceeds of the sale were to be dedicated to the sanctuary. But if the owner wished, on second thought, to redeem it, he might have it by adding a fifth part to the price. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Sanctify - i. e. vow to devote. This law relates to houses in the country Lev 25:31, which were under the same general law as the land itself, with a right of redemption for the inheritor until the next Jubilee. See Lev 27:17-19. For houses in walled towns the right of redemption lasted for only one year Lev 25:29. |
Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
When a house was vowed, the same rules applied as in the case of unclean cattle. Knobel's supposition, that the person making the vow was to pay the valuation price if he did not wish to redeem the house, is quite a groundless supposition. The house that was not redeemed was sold, of course, for the good of the sanctuary. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
Sanctify his house - By a vow, for of that way and manner of sanctification he speaks in this whole chapter. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Shall sanctify his house - The yearly rent of which, when thus consecrated, went towards the repairs of the tabernacle, which was the house of the Lord. |
29 And if a man [0376] sell [04376] a dwelling [04186] house [01004] in a walled [02346] city [05892], then he may redeem [01353] it within a whole [08552] year [08141] after it is sold [04465]; within a full year [03117] may he redeem [01353] it.
17 If he sanctify [06942] his field [07704] from the year [08141] of jubile [03104], according to thy estimation [06187] it shall stand [06965].
18 But if he sanctify [06942] his field [07704] after [0310] the jubile [03104], then the priest [03548] shall reckon [02803] unto him the money [03701] according to [06310] the years [08141] that remain [03498], even unto the year [08141] of the jubile [03104], and it shall be abated [01639] from thy estimation [06187].
19 And if he that sanctified [06942] the field [07704] will in any wise [01350] redeem [01350] it, then he shall add [03254] the fifth [02549] part of the money [03701] of thy estimation [06187] unto it, and it shall be assured [06965] to him.
31 But the houses [01004] of the villages [02691] which have no wall [02346] round about [05439] them shall be counted [02803] as the fields [07704] of the country [0776]: they may be redeemed [01353], and they shall go out [03318] in the jubile [03104].
