A BLESSING TO THE OBEDIENT. (Lev 26:3-13)
If ye walk in my statutes--In that covenant into which God graciously entered with the people of Israel, He promised to bestow upon them a variety of blessings, so long as they continued obedient to Him as their Almighty Ruler; and in their subsequent history that people found every promise amply fulfilled, in the enjoyment of plenty, peace, a populous country, and victory over all enemies. |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
As "the book of the covenant" Exo. 20:22-23:33 concludes with promises and warnings Exo 23:20-33, so does this collection of laws contained in the Book of Leviticus. But the former passage relates to the conquest of the land of promise, this one to the subsequent history of the nation. The longer similar passage in Deuteronomy Deut. 27-30 is marked by broader and deeper promises and denunciations having immediate reference not only to outward consequences, but to the spiritual death incurred by transgressing the divine will.
Lev 26:4
Rain in due season - The periodical rains, on which the fertility of the holy land so much depends, are here spoken of. There are two wet seasons, called in Scripture the former and the latter rain Deu 11:14; Jer 5:24; Joe 2:23; Hos 6:3; Jam 5:7. The former or Autumn rain falls in heavy showers in November and December. In March the latter or Spring rain comes on, which is precarious in quantity and duration, and rarely lasts more than two days.
Lev 26:5
Compare the margin reference; Joe 2:19; Job 11:18.
Lev 26:8
Five of you shall chase - A proverbial mode of expression for superiority in warlike prowess Deu 32:30; Isa 30:17.
Lev 26:9
Establish my covenant - All material blessings were to be regarded in the light of seals of the "everlasting covenant." Compare Gen 17:4-8; Neh 9:23.
Lev 26:10
Bring forth the old because of the new - Rather, clear away the old before the new; that is, in order to make room for the latter. Compare the margin reference.
Lev 26:16
The first warning for disobedience is disease. "Terror" (literally trembling) is rendered trouble in Psa 78:33; Isa 65:23. It seems here to denote that terrible affliction, an anxious temperament, the mental state ever at war with Faith and Hope. This might well be placed at the head of the visitations on a backslider who had broken the covenant with his God. Compare Deu 32:25; Jer 15:8; Pro 28:1; Job 24:17; Psa 23:4.
Consumption, and the burning ague - Compare the margin reference. The first of the words in the original comes from a root signifying to waste away; the latter (better, fever), from one signifying to kindle a fire. Consumption is common in Egypt and some parts of Asia Minor, but it is more rare in Syria. Fevers of different kinds are the commonest of all diseases in Syria and all the neighboring countries. The opposite promise to the threat is given in Exo 15:26; Exo 23:25.
Lev 26:18
For all this - i. e. for all the afflictions in Lev 26:16-17.
Seven times - The sabbatical number is here proverbially used to remind the people of the covenant. Compare Gen 4:15, Gen 4:24; Psa 119:164; Pro 24:16; Luk 17:4.
Lev 26:19, Lev 26:20
The second warning is utter sterility of the soil. Compare Deu 11:17; Deu 28:18; Eze 33:28; Eze 36:34-35.
Lev 26:21, Lev 26:22
The third warning is the multiplication of destructive animals, etc. Compare Deu 32:24; Eze 5:17; Eze 14:15; Jdg 5:6-7; Isa 33:8.
Lev 26:23-26
The fourth warning. Yahweh now places Himself as it were in a hostile position toward His people who "will not be reformed" (rather, brought unto God: Jer 2:30). He will avenge the outraged cause of His covenant, by the sword, pestilence, famine, and captivity.
Lev 26:26
Omit "and." "To break the staff of bread," was a proverbial expression for cutting off the supply of bread, the staff of life (Psa 105:16; Eze 4:16; Eze 5:16; Eze 14:13; compare Isa 3:1). The supply was to be so reduced that one oven would suffice for baking the bread maple by ten women for ten families, and when made it was to be dealt out in sparing rations by weight. See Kg2 6:25; Jer 14:18; Lam 4:9; Eze 5:12; Hos 4:10; Mic 6:14; Hag 1:6.
Lev 26:27-33
The fifth warning. For Lev 26:29 see Kg2 6:28-29; Jer 19:8-9; Lam 2:20; Lam 4:10; Eze 5:10, for Lev 26:30 see Ch2 34:3; Eze 6:4; Jer 14:19, for Lev 26:31 see Kg2 25:9; Psa 74:6-7 : for Lev 26:32-33 see Deu 28:37; Psa 44:11; Jer 9:16; Jer 18:16; Ezek. 5:1-17; Jer 4:7; Eze 9:6; Eze 12:15; Zac 7:14.
Lev 26:30
High places - There is no doubt that the word here denotes elevated spots dedicated to false worship (see Deu 12:2), and especially, it would seem, to that of Baal Num 22:41; Jos 13:17. Such spots were, however, employed and approved for the worship of Yahweh, not only before the building of the temple, but afterward (Jdg 6:25-26; Jdg 13:16-23; Sa1 7:10; Sa1 16:5; Kg1 3:2; Kg1 18:30; Kg2 12:3; Ch1 21:26, etc.). The three altars built by Abraham at Shechem, between Bethel and Ai, and at Mamre, appear to have been on heights, and so was the temple.
The high places in the holy land may thus have been divided into those dedicated to the worship of Yahweh, and those which had been dedicated to idols. And it would seem as if there was a constant struggle going on. The high places polluted by idol worship were of course to be wholly condemned. They were probably resorted to only to gratify a degraded superstition. See Lev 19:31; Lev 20:2-5. The others might have been innocently used for prayer and religious teaching. But the temptation appears to have been too great for the temper of the people. They offered sacrifice and burnt incense on them; and hence, thorough reformers of the national religion, such as Hezekiah and Josiah, removed the high places altogether Kg2 18:4; Kg2 23:5.
Your images - The original word is rendered in the margin of our Bible sun images (Ch2 14:5; Isa 17:8; Eze 6:4, etc.). Phoenician inscriptions prove that the word was commonly applied to images of Baal and Astarte, the god of the sun and the goddess of the moon. This exactly explains Ch2 34:4 following.
Idols - The Hebrew word here literally means things which could be rolled about, such as a block of wood or a lump of dirt. It was no doubt a name given in derision. Compare Isa 40:20; Isa 44:19; Kg2 1:2.
Lev 26:31
Sanctuaries - The holy places in the tabernacle and the temple (Psa 68:35. Compare Psa 74:7).
I will not smell the savor ... - See Lev 1:9.
Lev 26:35
More literally: All the days of its desolation shall it rest that time which it rested not in your Sabbaths while ye dwelt upon it. That is, the periods of rest of which the land had been deprived would be made up to it. Compare Ch2 36:20-21.
Lev 26:38
The land of your enemies shall eat you up - Compare Num 13:32; Eze 36:13.
Lev 26:39
Iniquity - The meaning here is, in the punishment of their iniquity, and, in the next clause, in the punishment of the iniquity (as in Lev 26:41, Lev 26:43) of their fathers. In the next verse the same Hebrew word is properly represented by "iniquity." Our translators have in several places put one of the English words in the text and the other in the margin (Gen 4:13; Gen 19:15; Kg2 7:9; Psa 69:27, etc.). The language of Scripture does not make that trenchant division between sin and punishment which we are accustomed to do. Sin is its own punishment, having in itself, from its very commencement, the germ of death. "Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death" Jam 1:15; Rom 2:5; Rom 5:12.
Lev 26:40
trespass - The Hebrew word signifies an injury inflicted on the rights of a person, as distinguished from a sin or iniquity regarded as an outrage of the divine law. Every wrong act is of course both a sin and a trespass against God. In this place Yahweh takes the breach of the covenant as a personal trespass.
Lev 26:41
Uncircumcised hearts - The outward sign of the covenant might be preserved, but the answering grace in the heart would be wanting (Act 7:51; Rom 2:28-29; Jer 6:10; Jer 9:26; compare Col 2:11).
Accept of the punishment of their iniquity - literally, enjoy their iniquity. The word here and in Lev 26:43 rendered "accept" in this phrase, is the same as is rendered "enjoy" in the expression "the land shall enjoy her sabbaths" Lev 26:34. The antithesis in Lev 26:43 is this: The land shall enjoy her sabbaths - and they shall enjoy the punishment of their iniquity. The meaning is, that the land being desolate shall have the blessing of rest, and they having repented shall have the blessing of chastisement. The feelings of a devout captive Israelite are beautifully expressed in Tobit 13:1-18. |

The Blessing of Fidelity to the Law. - Lev 26:3-5. If the Israelites walked in the commandments of the Lord (for the expression see Lev 18:3.), the Lord would give fruitfulness to their land, that they should have bread to the full. "I will give you rain-showers in season." The allusion here is to the showers which fall at the two rainy seasons, and upon which the fruitfulness of Palestine depends, viz., the early and latter rain (Deu 11:14). The former of these occurs after the autumnal equinox, at the time of the winter-sowing of wheat and barley, in the latter half of October or beginning of November. It generally falls in heavy showers in November and December, and then after that only at long intervals, and not so heavily. The latter, or so-called latter rain, fall sin March before the beginning of the harvest of the winter crops, at the time of sowing the summer seed, and lasts only a few days, in some years only a few hours (see Robinson, Pal. ii. pp. 97ff.). - On Lev 26:5, Lev 26:6, see Lev 25:18-19. |

If ye walk in my statutes - For the meaning of this and similar words used in the law, See the note on Lev 26:15. |
3 If ye walk [03212] in my statutes [02708], and keep [08104] my commandments [04687], and do [06213] them;
4 Then I will give [05414] you rain [01653] in due season [06256], and the land [0776] shall yield [05414] her increase [02981], and the trees [06086] of the field [07704] shall yield [05414] their fruit [06529].
5 And your threshing [01786] shall reach [05381] unto the vintage [01210], and the vintage [01210] shall reach [05381] unto the sowing time [02233]: and ye shall eat [0398] your bread [03899] to the full [07648], and dwell [03427] in your land [0776] safely [0983].
6 And I will give [05414] peace [07965] in the land [0776], and ye shall lie down [07901], and none shall make you afraid [02729]: and I will rid [07673] evil [07451] beasts [02416] out of the land [0776], neither shall the sword [02719] go [05674] through your land [0776].
7 And ye shall chase [07291] your enemies [0341], and they shall fall [05307] before [06440] you by the sword [02719].
8 And five [02568] of you shall chase [07291] an hundred [03967], and an hundred [03967] of you shall put ten thousand [07233] to flight [07291]: and your enemies [0341] shall fall [05307] before [06440] you by the sword [02719].
9 For I will have respect [06437] unto you, and make you fruitful [06509], and multiply [07235] you, and establish [06965] my covenant [01285] with you.
10 And ye shall eat [0398] old store [03462], and bring forth [03318] the old [03465] because [06440] of the new [02319].
11 And I will set [05414] my tabernacle [04908] among [08432] you: and my soul [05315] shall not abhor [01602] you.
12 And I will walk [01980] among [08432] you, and will be [01961] your God [0430], and ye shall be [01961] my people [05971].
13 I am the LORD [03068] your God [0430], which brought you forth [03318] out of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], that ye should not be their bondmen [05650]; and I have broken [07665] the bands [04133] of your yoke [05923], and made you go [03212] upright [06968].
43 The land [0776] also shall be left [05800] of them, and shall enjoy [07521] her sabbaths [07676], while she lieth desolate [08074] without them: and they shall accept [07521] of the punishment of their iniquity [05771]: because [03282], even because [03282] they despised [03988] my judgments [04941], and because their soul [05315] abhorred [01602] my statutes [02708].
34 Then shall the land [0776] enjoy [07521] her sabbaths [07676], as long [03117] as it lieth desolate [08074], and ye be in your enemies [0341] ' land [0776]; even then shall the land [0776] rest [07673], and enjoy [07521] her sabbaths [07676].
11 In [1722] whom [3739] also [2532] ye are circumcised [4059] with the circumcision [4061] made without hands [886], in [1722] putting off [555] the body [4983] of the sins [266] of the flesh [4561] by [1722] the circumcision [4061] of Christ [5547]:
26 Egypt [04714], and Judah [03063], and Edom [0123], and the children [01121] of Ammon [05983], and Moab [04124], and all that are in the utmost [07112] corners [06285], that dwell [03427] in the wilderness [04057]: for all these nations [01471] are uncircumcised [06189], and all the house [01004] of Israel [03478] are uncircumcised [06189] in the heart [03820].
10 To whom shall I speak [01696], and give warning [05749], that they may hear [08085]? behold, their ear [0241] is uncircumcised [06189], and they cannot [03201] hearken [07181]: behold, the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] is unto them a reproach [02781]; they have no delight [02654] in it.
28 For [1063] he is [2076] not [3756] a Jew [2453], which is one outwardly [1722] [5318]; neither [3761] is that circumcision [4061], which is outward [1722] [5318] in [1722] the flesh [4561]:
29 But [235] he is a Jew [2453], which is one inwardly [1722] [2927]; and [2532] circumcision [4061] is that of the heart [2588], in [1722] the spirit [4151], and not [3756] in the letter [1121]; whose [3739] praise [1868] is not [3756] of [1537] men [444], but [235] of [1537] God [2316].
51 Ye stiffnecked [4644] and [2532] uncircumcised [564] in heart [2588] and [2532] ears [3775], ye [5210] do [496] always [104] resist [496] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151]: as [5613] your [5216] fathers [3962] did, so [2532] do ye [5210].
41 And that I also have walked [03212] contrary [07147] unto them, and have brought [0935] them into the land [0776] of their enemies [0341]; if then [0176] their uncircumcised [06189] hearts [03824] be humbled [03665], and they then accept [07521] of the punishment of their iniquity [05771]:
40 If they shall confess [03034] their iniquity [05771], and the iniquity [05771] of their fathers [01], with their trespass [04604] which they trespassed [04603] against me, and that also they have walked [01980] contrary [07147] unto me;
12 Wherefore [1223] [5124], as [5618] by [1223] one [1520] man [444] sin [266] entered [1525] into [1519] the world [2889], and [2532] death [2288] by [1223] sin [266]; and [2532] so [3779] death [2288] passed [1330] upon [1519] all [3956] men [444], for [1909] that [3739] all [3956] have sinned [264]:
5 But [1161] after [2596] thy [4675] hardness [4643] and [2532] impenitent [279] heart [2588] treasurest up [2343] unto thyself [4572] wrath [3709] against [1722] the day [2250] of wrath [3709] and [2532] revelation [602] of the righteous judgment [1341] of God [2316];
15 Then [1534] when lust [1939] hath conceived [4815], it bringeth forth [5088] sin [266]: and [1161] sin [266], when it is finished [658], bringeth forth [616] death [2288].
27 Add [05414] iniquity [05771] unto their iniquity [05771]: and let them not come [0935] into thy righteousness [06666].
9 Then they said [0559] one [0376] to another [07453], We do [06213] not well: this day [03117] is a day [03117] of good tidings [01309], and we hold our peace [02814]: if we tarry [02442] till the morning [01242] light [0216], some mischief [05771] will come [04672] upon us: now therefore come [03212], that we may go [0935] and tell [05046] the king's [04428] household [01004].
15 And when [03644] the morning [07837] arose [05927], then the angels [04397] hastened [0213] Lot [03876], saying [0559], Arise [06965], take [03947] thy wife [0802], and thy two [08147] daughters [01323], which are here [04672]; lest thou be consumed [05595] in the iniquity [05771] of the city [05892].
13 And Cain [07014] said [0559] unto the LORD [03068], My punishment [05771] is greater [01419] than I can bear [05375].
39 And they that are left [07604] of you shall pine away [04743] in their iniquity [05771] in your enemies [0341] ' lands [0776]; and also in the iniquities [05771] of their fathers [01] shall they pine away [04743] with them.
13 Thus saith [0559] the Lord [0136] GOD [03069]; Because they say [0559] unto you, Thou land devourest up [0398] men [0120], and hast bereaved [07921] thy nations [01471];
32 And they brought up [03318] an evil report [01681] of the land [0776] which they had searched [08446] unto the children [01121] of Israel [03478], saying [0559], The land [0776], through which we have gone [05674] to search [08446] it, is a land [0776] that eateth up [0398] the inhabitants [03427] thereof; and all the people [05971] that we saw [07200] in it [08432] are men [0582] of a great stature [04060].
38 And ye shall perish [06] among the heathen [01471], and the land [0776] of your enemies [0341] shall eat you up [0398].
20 And them that had escaped [07611] from the sword [02719] carried he away [01540] to Babylon [0894]; where they were servants [05650] to him and his sons [01121] until the reign [04427] of the kingdom [04438] of Persia [06539]:
21 To fulfil [04390] the word [01697] of the LORD [03068] by the mouth [06310] of Jeremiah [03414], until the land [0776] had enjoyed [07521] her sabbaths [07676]: for as long as [03117] she lay desolate [08074] she kept sabbath [07673], to fulfil [04390] threescore and ten [07657] years [08141].
35 As long as [03117] it lieth desolate [08074] it shall rest [07673]; because it did not rest [07673] in your sabbaths [07676], when ye dwelt [03427] upon it.
9 But his inwards [07130] and his legs [03767] shall he wash [07364] in water [04325]: and the priest [03548] shall burn [06999] all on the altar [04196], to be a burnt sacrifice [05930], an offering made by fire [0801], of a sweet [05207] savour [07381] unto the LORD [03068].
7 They have cast [07971] fire [0784] into thy sanctuary [04720], they have defiled [02490] by casting down the dwelling place [04908] of thy name [08034] to the ground [0776].
35 O God [0430], thou art terrible [03372] out of thy holy places [04720]: the God [0410] of Israel [03478] is he that giveth [05414] strength [05797] and power [08592] unto his people [05971]. Blessed [01288] be God [0430].
31 And I will make [05414] your cities [05892] waste [02723], and bring [08074] your sanctuaries [04720] unto desolation [08074], and I will not smell [07306] the savour [07381] of your sweet odours [05207].
2 And Ahaziah [0274] fell down [05307] through a lattice [07639] in his upper chamber [05944] that was in Samaria [08111], and was sick [02470]: and he sent [07971] messengers [04397], and said [0559] unto them, Go [03212], enquire [01875] of Baalzebub [01176] the god [0430] of Ekron [06138] whether I shall recover [02421] of this disease [02483].
19 And none considereth [07725] in his heart [03820], neither is there knowledge [01847] nor understanding [08394] to say [0559], I have burned [08313] part [02677] of it in [01119] the fire [0784]; yea, also I have baked [0644] bread [03899] upon the coals [01513] thereof; I have roasted [06740] flesh [01320], and eaten [0398] it: and shall I make [06213] the residue [03499] thereof an abomination [08441]? shall I fall down [05456] to the stock [0944] of a tree [06086]?
20 He that is so impoverished [05533] [05534] that he hath no oblation [08641] chooseth [0977] a tree [06086] that will not rot [07537]; he seeketh [01245] unto him a cunning [02450] workman [02796] to prepare [03559] a graven image [06459], that shall not be moved [04131].
4 And they brake down [05422] the altars [04196] of Baalim [01168] in his presence [06440]; and the images [02553], that were on high above them [04605], he cut down [01438]; and the groves [0842], and the carved images [06456], and the molten images [04541], he brake in pieces [07665], and made dust [01854] of them, and strowed [02236] it upon [06440] the graves [06913] of them that had sacrificed [02076] unto them.
4 And your altars [04196] shall be desolate [08074], and your images [02553] shall be broken [07665]: and I will cast down [05307] your slain [02491] men before [06440] your idols [01544].
8 And he shall not look [08159] to the altars [04196], the work [04639] of his hands [03027], neither shall respect [07200] that which his fingers [0676] have made [06213], either the groves [0842], or the images [02553].
5 Also he took away [05493] out of all the cities [05892] of Judah [03063] the high places [01116] and the images [02553]: and the kingdom [04467] was quiet [08252] before [06440] him.
5 And he put down [07673] the idolatrous priests [03649], whom the kings [04428] of Judah [03063] had ordained [05414] to burn incense [06999] in the high places [01116] in the cities [05892] of Judah [03063], and in the places round about [04524] Jerusalem [03389]; them also that burned incense [06999] unto Baal [01168], to the sun [08121], and to the moon [03394], and to the planets [04208], and to all the host [06635] of heaven [08064].
4 He removed [05493] the high places [01116], and brake [07665] the images [04676], and cut down [03772] the groves [0842], and brake in pieces [03807] the brasen [05178] serpent [05175] that Moses [04872] had made [06213]: for unto those days [03117] the children [01121] of Israel [03478] did burn incense [06999] to it: and he called [07121] it Nehushtan [05180].
2 Again, thou shalt say [0559] to the children [01121] of Israel [03478], Whosoever [0376] he be of the children [01121] of Israel [03478], or of the strangers [01616] that sojourn [01481] in Israel [03478], that giveth [05414] any of his seed [02233] unto Molech [04432]; he shall surely [04191] be put to death [04191]: the people [05971] of the land [0776] shall stone [07275] him with stones [068].
3 And I will set [05414] my face [06440] against that man [0376], and will cut him off [03772] from among [07130] his people [05971]; because he hath given [05414] of his seed [02233] unto Molech [04432], to defile [02930] my sanctuary [04720], and to profane [02490] my holy [06944] name [08034].
4 And if the people [05971] of the land [0776] do any ways [05956] hide [05956] their eyes [05869] from the man [0376], when he giveth [05414] of his seed [02233] unto Molech [04432], and kill [04191] him not [01115]:
5 Then I will set [07760] my face [06440] against that man [0376], and against his family [04940], and will cut him off [03772], and all that go a whoring [02181] after [0310] him, to commit whoredom [02181] with Molech [04432], from among [07130] their people [05971].
31 Regard [06437] not them that have familiar spirits [0178], neither seek [01245] after wizards [03049], to be defiled [02930] by them: I am the LORD [03068] your God [0430].
26 And David [01732] built [01129] there an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068], and offered [05927] burnt offerings [05930] and peace offerings [08002], and called [07121] upon the LORD [03068]; and he answered [06030] him from heaven [08064] by fire [0784] upon the altar [04196] of burnt offering [05930].
3 But the high places [01116] were not taken away [05493]: the people [05971] still sacrificed [02076] and burnt incense [06999] in the high places [01116].
30 And Elijah [0452] said [0559] unto all the people [05971], Come near [05066] unto me. And all the people [05971] came near [05066] unto him. And he repaired [07495] the altar [04196] of the LORD [03068] that was broken down [02040].
2 Only the people [05971] sacrificed [02076] in high places [01116], because there was no house [01004] built [01129] unto the name [08034] of the LORD [03068], until those days [03117].
5 And he said [0559], Peaceably [07965]: I am come [0935] to sacrifice [02076] unto the LORD [03068]: sanctify [06942] yourselves, and come [0935] with me to the sacrifice [02077]. And he sanctified [06942] Jesse [03448] and his sons [01121], and called [07121] them to the sacrifice [02077].
10 And as Samuel [08050] was offering up [05927] the burnt offering [05930], the Philistines [06430] drew near [05066] to battle [04421] against Israel [03478]: but the LORD [03068] thundered [07481] with a great [01419] thunder [06963] on that day [03117] upon the Philistines [06430], and discomfited [02000] them; and they were smitten [05062] before [06440] Israel [03478].
16 And the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto Manoah [04495], Though thou detain [06113] me, I will not eat [0398] of thy bread [03899]: and if [0518] thou wilt offer [06213] a burnt offering [05930], thou must offer [05927] it unto the LORD [03068]. For Manoah [04495] knew [03045] not that he was an angel [04397] of the LORD [03068].
17 And Manoah [04495] said [0559] unto the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068], What is thy name [08034], that when thy sayings [01697] come to pass [0935] we may do thee honour [03513]?
18 And the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Why askest [07592] thou thus after my name [08034], seeing it is secret [06383] [06383]?
19 So Manoah [04495] took [03947] a kid [01423] [05795] with a meat offering [04503], and offered [05927] it upon a rock [06697] unto the LORD [03068]: and the angel did [06213] wondrously [06381]; and Manoah [04495] and his wife [0802] looked on [07200].
20 For it came to pass, when the flame [03851] went up [05927] toward heaven [08064] from off the altar [04196], that the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] ascended [05927] in the flame [03851] of the altar [04196]. And Manoah [04495] and his wife [0802] looked on [07200] it, and fell on [05307] their faces [06440] to the ground [0776].
21 But the angel [04397] of the LORD [03068] did no more [03254] appear [07200] to Manoah [04495] and to his wife [0802]. Then Manoah [04495] knew [03045] that he was an angel [04397] of the LORD [03068].
22 And Manoah [04495] said [0559] unto his wife [0802], We shall surely [04191] die [04191], because we have seen [07200] God [0430].
23 But his wife [0802] said [0559] unto him, If [03863] the LORD [03068] were pleased [02654] to kill [04191] us, he would not have received [03947] a burnt offering [05930] and a meat offering [04503] at our hands [03027], neither would he have shewed [07200] us all these things, nor would as at this time [06256] have told [08085] us such things as these [02063].
25 And it came to pass the same night [03915], that the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Take [03947] thy father's [01] young [06499] bullock [07794], even the second [08145] bullock [06499] of seven [07651] years old [08141], and throw down [02040] the altar [04196] of Baal [01168] that thy father [01] hath, and cut down [03772] the grove [0842] that is by it:
26 And build [01129] an altar [04196] unto the LORD [03068] thy God [0430] upon the top [07218] of this rock [04581], in the ordered place [04634], and take [03947] the second [08145] bullock [06499], and offer [05927] a burnt sacrifice [05930] with the wood [06086] of the grove [0842] which thou shalt cut down [03772].
17 Heshbon [02809], and all her cities [05892] that are in the plain [04334]; Dibon [01769], and Bamothbaal [01120], and Bethbaalmeon [01010],
41 And it came to pass on the morrow [01242], that Balak [01111] took [03947] Balaam [01109], and brought him up [05927] into the high places [01116] of Baal [01120], that thence he might see [07200] the utmost [07097] part of the people [05971].
2 Ye shall utterly [06] destroy [06] all the places [04725], wherein the nations [01471] which [0834] ye shall possess [03423] served [05647] their gods [0430], upon the high [07311] mountains [02022], and upon the hills [01389], and under every green [07488] tree [06086]:
30 And I will destroy [08045] your high places [01116], and cut down [03772] your images [02553], and cast [05414] your carcases [06297] upon the carcases [06297] of your idols [01544], and my soul [05315] shall abhor [01602] you.
14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind [05590] among all the nations [01471] whom they knew [03045] not. Thus the land [0776] was desolate [08074] after [0310] them, that no man passed through [05674] nor returned [07725]: for they laid [07760] the pleasant [02532] land [0776] desolate [08047].
15 And they shall know [03045] that I am the LORD [03068], when I shall scatter [06327] them among the nations [01471], and disperse [02219] them in the countries [0776].
6 Slay [02026] utterly [04889] old [02205] and young [0970], both maids [01330], and little children [02945], and women [0802]: but come not near [05066] any man [0376] upon whom is the mark [08420]; and begin [02490] at my sanctuary [04720]. Then they began [02490] at the ancient [02205] men [0582] which were before [06440] the house [01004].
7 The lion [0738] is come up [05927] from his thicket [05441], and the destroyer [07843] of the Gentiles [01471] is on his way [05265]; he is gone forth [03318] from his place [04725] to make [07760] thy land [0776] desolate [08047]; and thy cities [05892] shall be laid waste [05327], without an inhabitant [03427].
16 To make [07760] their land [0776] desolate [08047], and a perpetual [05769] hissing [08292] [08292]; every one that passeth [05674] thereby shall be astonished [08074], and wag [05110] his head [07218].
16 I will scatter [06327] them also among the heathen [01471], whom neither they nor their fathers [01] have known [03045]: and I will send [07971] a sword [02719] after [0310] them, till I have consumed [03615] them.
11 Thou hast given [05414] us like sheep [06629] appointed for meat [03978]; and hast scattered [02219] us among the heathen [01471].
37 And thou shalt become an astonishment [08047], a proverb [04912], and a byword [08148], among all nations [05971] whither the LORD [03068] shall lead [05090] thee.
32 And I will bring [08074] the land [0776] into desolation [08074]: and your enemies [0341] which dwell [03427] therein shall be astonished [08074] at it.
33 And I will scatter [02219] you among the heathen [01471], and will draw out [07324] a sword [02719] after [0310] you: and your land [0776] shall be desolate [08077], and your cities [05892] waste [02723].
6 But now they break down [01986] the carved work [06603] thereof at once [03162] with axes [03781] and hammers [03597].
7 They have cast [07971] fire [0784] into thy sanctuary [04720], they have defiled [02490] by casting down the dwelling place [04908] of thy name [08034] to the ground [0776].
9 And he burnt [08313] the house [01004] of the LORD [03068], and the king's [04428] house [01004], and all the houses [01004] of Jerusalem [03389], and every great [01419] man's house [01004] burnt [08313] he with fire [0784].
31 And I will make [05414] your cities [05892] waste [02723], and bring [08074] your sanctuaries [04720] unto desolation [08074], and I will not smell [07306] the savour [07381] of your sweet odours [05207].
19 Hast thou utterly [03988] rejected [03988] Judah [03063]? hath thy soul [05315] lothed [01602] Zion [06726]? why hast thou smitten [05221] us, and there is no healing [04832] for us? we looked [06960] for peace [07965], and there is no good [02896]; and for the time [06256] of healing [04832], and behold trouble [01205]!
4 And your altars [04196] shall be desolate [08074], and your images [02553] shall be broken [07665]: and I will cast down [05307] your slain [02491] men before [06440] your idols [01544].
3 For in the eighth [08083] year [08141] of his reign [04427], while he was yet young [05288], he began [02490] to seek [01875] after the God [0430] of David [01732] his father [01]: and in the twelfth [08147] [06240] year [08141] he began [02490] to purge [02891] Judah [03063] and Jerusalem [03389] from the high places [01116], and the groves [0842], and the carved images [06456], and the molten images [04541].
30 And I will destroy [08045] your high places [01116], and cut down [03772] your images [02553], and cast [05414] your carcases [06297] upon the carcases [06297] of your idols [01544], and my soul [05315] shall abhor [01602] you.
10 Therefore the fathers [01] shall eat [0398] the sons [01121] in the midst [08432] of thee, and the sons [01121] shall eat [0398] their fathers [01]; and I will execute [06213] judgments [08201] in thee, and the whole remnant [07611] of thee will I scatter [02219] into all the winds [07307].
10 The hands [03027] of the pitiful [07362] women [0802] have sodden [01310] their own children [03206]: they were their meat [01262] in the destruction [07667] of the daughter [01323] of my people [05971].
20 Behold [07200], O LORD [03068], and consider [05027] to whom thou hast done [05953] this [03541]. Shall the women [0802] eat [0398] their fruit [06529], and children [05768] of a span long [02949]? shall the priest [03548] and the prophet [05030] be slain [02026] in the sanctuary [04720] of the Lord [0136]?
8 And I will make [07760] this city [05892] desolate [08047], and an hissing [08322]; every one that passeth [05674] thereby shall be astonished [08074] and hiss [08319] because of all the plagues [04347] thereof.
9 And I will cause them to eat [0398] the flesh [01320] of their sons [01121] and the flesh [01320] of their daughters [01323], and they shall eat [0398] every one [0376] the flesh [01320] of his friend [07453] in the siege [04692] and straitness [04689], wherewith their enemies [0341], and they that seek [01245] their lives [05315], shall straiten [06693] them.
28 And the king [04428] said [0559] unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered [0559], This woman [0802] said [0559] unto me, Give [05414] thy son [01121], that we may eat [0398] him to day [03117], and we will eat [0398] my son [01121] to morrow [04279].
29 So we boiled [01310] my son [01121], and did eat [0398] him: and I said [0559] unto her on the next [0312] day [03117], Give [05414] thy son [01121], that we may eat [0398] him: and she hath hid [02244] her son [01121].
29 And ye shall eat [0398] the flesh [01320] of your sons [01121], and the flesh [01320] of your daughters [01323] shall ye eat [0398].
27 And if ye will not for all this [02063] hearken [08085] unto me, but walk [01980] contrary [07147] unto me;
28 Then I will walk [01980] contrary [07147] unto you also in fury [02534]; and I, even [0637] I, will chastise [03256] you seven times [07651] for your sins [02403].
29 And ye shall eat [0398] the flesh [01320] of your sons [01121], and the flesh [01320] of your daughters [01323] shall ye eat [0398].
30 And I will destroy [08045] your high places [01116], and cut down [03772] your images [02553], and cast [05414] your carcases [06297] upon the carcases [06297] of your idols [01544], and my soul [05315] shall abhor [01602] you.
31 And I will make [05414] your cities [05892] waste [02723], and bring [08074] your sanctuaries [04720] unto desolation [08074], and I will not smell [07306] the savour [07381] of your sweet odours [05207].
6 Ye have sown [02232] much [07235], and bring [0935] in little [04592]; ye eat [0398], but ye have not enough [07654]; ye drink [08354], but ye are not filled with drink [07937]; ye clothe [03847] you, but there is none warm [02527]; and he that earneth wages [07936] earneth wages [07936] to put it into a bag [06872] with holes [05344].
14 Thou shalt eat [0398], but not be satisfied [07646]; and thy casting down [03445] shall be in the midst [07130] of thee; and thou shalt take hold [05253], but shalt not deliver [06403]; and that which thou deliverest [06403] will I give up [05414] to the sword [02719].
10 For they shall eat [0398], and not have enough [07646]: they shall commit whoredom [02181], and shall not increase [06555]: because they have left off [05800] to take heed [08104] to the LORD [03068].
12 A third part [07992] of thee shall die [04191] with the pestilence [01698], and with famine [07458] shall they be consumed [03615] in the midst [08432] of thee: and a third part [07992] shall fall [05307] by the sword [02719] round about [05439] thee; and I will scatter [02219] a third part [07992] into all the winds [07307], and I will draw out [07324] a sword [02719] after [0310] them.
9 They that be slain [02491] with the sword [02719] are better [02896] than they that be slain [02491] with hunger [07458]: for these [01992] pine away [02100], stricken [01856] through for want of the fruits [08570] of the field [07704].
18 If I go forth [03318] into the field [07704], then behold the slain [02491] with the sword [02719]! and if I enter [0935] into the city [05892], then behold them that are sick [08463] with famine [07458]! yea, both the prophet [05030] and the priest [03548] go about [05503] into a land [0776] that they know [03045] not.
25 And there was a great [01419] famine [07458] in Samaria [08111]: and, behold, they besieged [06696] it, until an ass's [02543] head [07218] was sold for fourscore [08084] pieces of silver [03701], and the fourth part [07255] of a cab [06894] of dove's dung [01686] [03123] [02755] for five [02568] pieces of silver [03701].
1 For, behold, the Lord [0113], the LORD [03068] of hosts [06635], doth take away [05493] from Jerusalem [03389] and from Judah [03063] the stay [04937] and the staff [04938], the whole stay [04937] of bread [03899], and the whole [03605] stay [04937] of water [04325],
13 Son [01121] of man [0120], when the land [0776] sinneth [02398] against me by trespassing [04603] grievously [04604], then will I stretch out [05186] mine hand [03027] upon it, and will break [07665] the staff [04294] of the bread [03899] thereof, and will send [07971] famine [07458] upon it, and will cut off [03772] man [0120] and beast [0929] from it:
16 When I shall send [07971] upon them the evil [07451] arrows [02671] of famine [07458], which shall be for their destruction [04889], and which I will send [07971] to destroy [07843] you: and I will increase [03254] the famine [07458] upon you, and will break [07665] your staff [04294] of bread [03899]:
16 Moreover he said [0559] unto me, Son [01121] of man [0120], behold, I will break [07665] the staff [04294] of bread [03899] in Jerusalem [03389]: and they shall eat [0398] bread [03899] by weight [04948], and with care [01674]; and they shall drink [08354] water [04325] by measure [04884], and with astonishment [08078]:
16 Moreover he called [07121] for a famine [07458] upon the land [0776]: he brake [07665] the whole staff [04294] of bread [03899].
26 And when I have broken [07665] the staff [04294] of your bread [03899], ten [06235] women [0802] shall bake [0644] your bread [03899] in one [0259] oven [08574], and they shall deliver [07725] you your bread [03899] again [07725] by weight [04948]: and ye shall eat [0398], and not be satisfied [07646].
30 In vain [07723] have I smitten [05221] your children [01121]; they received [03947] no correction [04148]: your own sword [02719] hath devoured [0398] your prophets [05030], like a destroying [07843] lion [0738].
23 And if ye will not be reformed [03256] by me by these things, but will walk [01980] contrary [07147] unto me;
24 Then will I also walk [01980] contrary [07147] unto you, and will punish [05221] you yet [01571] seven times [07651] for your sins [02403].
25 And I will bring [0935] a sword [02719] upon you, that shall avenge [05358] the quarrel [05359] of my covenant [01285]: and when ye are gathered together [0622] within [0413] your cities [05892], I will send [07971] the pestilence [01698] among [08432] you; and ye shall be delivered [05414] into the hand [03027] of the enemy [0341].
8 The highways [04546] lie waste [08074], the wayfaring man [05674] [0734] ceaseth [07673]: he hath broken [06565] the covenant [01285], he hath despised [03988] the cities [05892], he regardeth [02803] no man [0582].
6 In the days [03117] of Shamgar [08044] the son [01121] of Anath [06067], in the days [03117] of Jael [03278], the highways [0734] were unoccupied [02308], and the travellers [01980] walked [03212] through byways [06128] [05410].
7 The inhabitants of the villages [06520] ceased [02308], they ceased [02308] in Israel [03478], until that I Deborah [01683] arose [06965], that I arose [06965] a mother [0517] in Israel [03478].
15 If [03863] I cause noisome [07451] beasts [02416] to pass through [05674] the land [0776], and they spoil [07921] it, so that it be desolate [08077], that no man may pass through [05674] because [06440] of the beasts [02416]:
17 So will I send [07971] upon you famine [07458] and evil [07451] beasts [02416], and they shall bereave [07921] thee; and pestilence [01698] and blood [01818] shall pass through [05674] thee; and I will bring [0935] the sword [02719] upon thee. I the LORD [03068] have spoken [01696] it.
24 They shall be burnt [04198] with hunger [07458], and devoured [03898] with burning heat [07565], and with bitter [04815] destruction [06986]: I will also send [07971] the teeth [08127] of beasts [0929] upon them, with the poison [02534] of serpents [02119] of the dust [06083].
22 I will also send [07971] wild [07704] beasts [02416] among you, which shall rob you of your children [07921], and destroy [03772] your cattle [0929], and make you few in number [04591]; and your high ways [01870] shall be desolate [08074].
21 And if ye walk [03212] contrary [07147] unto me, and will [014] not hearken [08085] unto me; I will bring [03254] seven times [07651] more [03254] plagues [04347] upon you according to your sins [02403].
34 And the desolate [08074] land [0776] shall be tilled [05647], whereas it lay desolate [08077] in the sight [05869] of all that passed by [05674].
35 And they shall say [0559], This [01977] land [0776] that was desolate [08074] is become like the garden [01588] of Eden [05731]; and the waste [02720] and desolate [08074] and ruined [02040] cities [05892] are become fenced [01219], and are inhabited [03427].
28 For I will lay [05414] the land [0776] most [04923] desolate [08077], and the pomp [01347] of her strength [05797] shall cease [07673]; and the mountains [02022] of Israel [03478] shall be desolate [08074], that none shall pass through [05674].
18 Cursed [0779] shall be the fruit [06529] of thy body [0990], and the fruit [06529] of thy land [0127], the increase [07698] of thy kine [0504], and the flocks [06251] of thy sheep [06629].
17 And then the LORD'S [03068] wrath [0639] be kindled [02734] against you, and he shut up [06113] the heaven [08064], that there be no rain [04306], and that the land [0127] yield [05414] not her fruit [02981]; and lest ye perish [06] quickly [04120] from off the good [02896] land [0776] which the LORD [03068] giveth [05414] you.
20 And your strength [03581] shall be spent [08552] in vain [07385]: for your land [0776] shall not yield [05414] her increase [02981], neither shall the trees [06086] of the land [0776] yield [05414] their fruits [06529].
19 And I will break [07665] the pride [01347] of your power [05797]; and I will make [05414] your heaven [08064] as iron [01270], and your earth [0776] as brass [05154]:
4 And [2532] if [1437] he trespass [264] against [1519] thee [4571] seven times [2034] in a day [2250], and [2532] seven times [2034] in a day [2250] turn again [1994] to [1909] thee [4571], saying [3004], I repent [3340]; thou shalt forgive [863] him [846].
16 For a just [06662] man falleth [05307] seven times [07651], and riseth up again [06965]: but the wicked [07563] shall fall [03782] into mischief [07451].
164 Seven times [07651] a day [03117] do I praise [01984] thee because of thy righteous [06664] judgments [04941].
24 If [03588] Cain [07014] shall be avenged [05358] sevenfold [07659], truly Lamech [03929] seventy [07657] and sevenfold [07651].
15 And the LORD [03068] said [0559] unto him, Therefore [03651] whosoever slayeth [02026] Cain [07014], vengeance shall be taken [05358] on him sevenfold [07659]. And the LORD [03068] set [07760] a mark [0226] upon Cain [07014], lest [01115] any finding [04672] him should kill [05221] him.
16 I also will do [06213] this unto you; I will even appoint [06485] over you terror [0928], consumption [07829], and the burning ague [06920], that shall consume [03615] the eyes [05869], and cause sorrow [01727] of heart [05315]: and ye shall sow [02232] your seed [02233] in vain [07385], for your enemies [0341] shall eat [0398] it.
17 And I will set [05414] my face [06440] against you, and ye shall be slain [05062] before [06440] your enemies [0341]: they that hate [08130] you shall reign [07287] over you; and ye shall flee [05127] when none pursueth [07291] you.
18 And if ye will not yet [05704] for all this hearken [08085] unto me, then I will punish [03256] you seven times [07651] more [03254] for your sins [02403].
25 And ye shall serve [05647] the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and he shall bless [01288] thy bread [03899], and thy water [04325]; and I will take [05493] sickness [04245] away [05493] from the midst [07130] of thee.
26 And said [0559], If thou wilt diligently [08085] hearken [08085] to the voice [06963] of the LORD [03068] thy God [0430], and wilt do [06213] that which is right [03477] in his sight [05869], and wilt give ear [0238] to his commandments [04687], and keep [08104] all his statutes [02706], I will put [07760] none of these diseases [04245] upon thee, which I have brought [07760] upon the Egyptians [04714]: for I am the LORD [03068] that healeth [07495] thee.
4 Yea, though I walk [03212] through the valley [01516] of the shadow of death [06757], I will fear [03372] no evil [07451]: for thou art with me; thy rod [07626] and thy staff [04938] they comfort [05162] me.
17 For the morning [01242] is to them even as [03162] the shadow of death [06757]: if one know [05234] them, they are in the terrors [01091] of the shadow of death [06757].
1 The wicked [07563] flee [05127] when no man pursueth [07291]: but the righteous [06662] are bold [0982] as a lion [03715].
8 Their widows [0490] are increased [06105] to me above the sand [02344] of the seas [03220]: I have brought [0935] upon them against the mother [0517] of the young men [0970] a spoiler [07703] at noonday [06672]: I have caused him to fall [05307] upon it suddenly [06597], and terrors [0928] upon the city [05892].
25 The sword [02719] without [02351], and terror [0367] within [02315], shall destroy [07921] both the young man [0970] and the virgin [01330], the suckling [03243] also with the man [0376] of gray hairs [07872].
23 They shall not labour [03021] in vain [07385], nor bring forth [03205] for trouble [0928]; for they are the seed [02233] of the blessed [01288] of the LORD [03068], and their offspring [06631] with them.
33 Therefore their days [03117] did he consume [03615] in vanity [01892], and their years [08141] in trouble [0928].
10 And ye shall eat [0398] old store [03462], and bring forth [03318] the old [03465] because [06440] of the new [02319].
23 Their children [01121] also multipliedst [07235] thou as the stars [03556] of heaven [08064], and broughtest [0935] them into the land [0776], concerning which thou hadst promised [0559] to their fathers [01], that they should go in [0935] to possess [03423] it.
4 As for me [0589], behold, my covenant [01285] is with thee, and thou shalt be a father [01] of many [01995] nations [01471].
5 Neither shall thy name [08034] any more be called [07121] Abram [087], but thy name [08034] shall be Abraham [085]; for a father [01] of many [01995] nations [01471] have I made thee [05414].
6 And I will make [06509] thee exceeding [03966] [03966] fruitful [06509], and I will make [05414] nations [01471] of thee, and kings [04428] shall come out [03318] of thee.
7 And I will establish [06965] my covenant [01285] between me and thee and thy seed [02233] after thee [0310] in their generations [01755] for an everlasting [05769] covenant [01285], to be a God [0430] unto thee, and to thy seed [02233] after thee [0310].
8 And I will give [05414] unto thee, and to thy seed [02233] after thee [0310], the land [0776] wherein thou art a stranger [04033], all the land [0776] of Canaan [03667], for an everlasting [05769] possession [0272]; and I will be their God [0430].
9 For I will have respect [06437] unto you, and make you fruitful [06509], and multiply [07235] you, and establish [06965] my covenant [01285] with you.
17 One [0259] thousand [0505] shall flee at [06440] the rebuke [01606] of one [0259]; at [06440] the rebuke [01606] of five [02568] shall ye flee [05127]: till ye be left [03498] as a beacon [08650] upon the top [07218] of a mountain [02022], and as an ensign [05251] on an hill [01389].
30 How should one [0259] chase [07291] a thousand [0505], and two [08147] put ten [07233] thousand [0505] to flight [05127], except [03808] their Rock [06697] had sold [04376] them [03588], and the LORD [03068] had shut them up [05462]?
8 And five [02568] of you shall chase [07291] an hundred [03967], and an hundred [03967] of you shall put ten thousand [07233] to flight [07291]: and your enemies [0341] shall fall [05307] before [06440] you by the sword [02719].
18 And thou shalt be secure [0982], because there is [03426] hope [08615]; yea, thou shalt dig [02658] about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest [07901] in safety [0983].
19 Yea, the LORD [03068] will answer [06030] and say [0559] unto his people [05971], Behold, I will send [07971] you corn [01715], and wine [08492], and oil [03323], and ye shall be satisfied [07646] therewith: and I will no more make [05414] you a reproach [02781] among the heathen [01471]:
5 And your threshing [01786] shall reach [05381] unto the vintage [01210], and the vintage [01210] shall reach [05381] unto the sowing time [02233]: and ye shall eat [0398] your bread [03899] to the full [07648], and dwell [03427] in your land [0776] safely [0983].
7 Be patient [3114] therefore [3767], brethren [80], unto [2193] the coming [3952] of the Lord [2962]. Behold [2400], the husbandman [1092] waiteth [1551] for the precious [5093] fruit [2590] of the earth [1093], and hath long patience [3114] for [1909] it [846], until [2193] [302] he receive [2983] the early [4406] and [2532] latter [3797] rain [5205].
3 Then shall we know [03045], if we follow [07291] on to know [03045] the LORD [03068]: his going forth [04161] is prepared [03559] as the morning [07837]; and he shall come [0935] unto us as the rain [01653], as the latter [04456] and former rain [03384] unto the earth [0776].
23 Be glad [01523] then, ye children [01121] of Zion [06726], and rejoice [08055] in the LORD [03068] your God [0430]: for he hath given [05414] you the former rain [04175] moderately [06666], and he will cause to come down [03381] for you the rain [01653], the former rain [04175], and the latter rain [04456] in the first [07223] month.
24 Neither say [0559] they in their heart [03824], Let us now fear [03372] the LORD [03068] our God [0430], that giveth [05414] rain [01653], both the former [03138] and the latter [04456], in his season [06256]: he reserveth [08104] unto us the appointed [02708] weeks [07620] of the harvest [07105].
14 That I will give [05414] you the rain [04306] of your land [0776] in his due season [06256], the first rain [03138] and the latter rain [04456], that thou mayest gather [0622] in thy corn [01715], and thy wine [08492], and thine oil [03323].
4 Then I will give [05414] you rain [01653] in due season [06256], and the land [0776] shall yield [05414] her increase [02981], and the trees [06086] of the field [07704] shall yield [05414] their fruit [06529].
20 Behold, I send [07971] an Angel [04397] before [06440] thee, to keep [08104] thee in the way [01870], and to bring [0935] thee into the place [04725] which I have prepared [03559].
21 Beware [08104] of [06440] him, and obey [08085] his voice [06963], provoke [04843] him not; for he will not pardon [05375] your transgressions [06588]: for my name [08034] is in him [07130].
22 But if thou shalt indeed [08085] obey [08085] his voice [06963], and do [06213] all that I speak [01696]; then I will be an enemy [0340] unto thine enemies [0341], and an adversary [06887] unto thine adversaries [06696].
23 For mine Angel [04397] shall go [03212] before [06440] thee, and bring [0935] thee in unto the Amorites [0567], and the Hittites [02850], and the Perizzites [06522], and the Canaanites [03669], the Hivites [02340], and the Jebusites [02983]: and I will cut them off [03582].
24 Thou shalt not bow down [07812] to their gods [0430], nor serve [05647] them, nor do [06213] after their works [04639]: but thou shalt utterly [02040] overthrow [02040] them, and quite [07665] break down [07665] their images [04676].
25 And ye shall serve [05647] the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and he shall bless [01288] thy bread [03899], and thy water [04325]; and I will take [05493] sickness [04245] away [05493] from the midst [07130] of thee.
26 There shall nothing cast their young [07921], nor be barren [06135], in thy land [0776]: the number [04557] of thy days [03117] I will fulfil [04390].
27 I will send [07971] my fear [0367] before [06440] thee, and will destroy [02000] all the people [05971] to whom thou shalt come [0935], and I will make [05414] all thine enemies [0341] turn their backs [06203] unto thee.
28 And I will send [07971] hornets [06880] before [06440] thee, which shall drive out [01644] the Hivite [02340], the Canaanite [03669], and the Hittite [02850], from before [06440] thee.
29 I will not drive them out [01644] from before [06440] thee in one [0259] year [08141]; lest the land [0776] become desolate [08077], and the beast [02416] of the field [07704] multiply [07227] against thee.
30 By little [04592] and little [04592] I will drive them out [01644] from before [06440] thee, until thou be increased [06509], and inherit [05157] the land [0776].
31 And I will set [07896] thy bounds [01366] from the Red [05488] sea [03220] even unto the sea [03220] of the Philistines [06430], and from the desert [04057] unto the river [05104]: for I will deliver [05414] the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] into your hand [03027]; and thou shalt drive them out [01644] before [06440] thee.
32 Thou shalt make [03772] no covenant [01285] with them, nor with their gods [0430].
33 They shall not dwell [03427] in thy land [0776], lest they make thee sin [02398] against me: for if thou serve [05647] their gods [0430], it will surely be a snare [04170] unto thee.
18 Wherefore ye shall do [06213] my statutes [02708], and keep [08104] my judgments [04941], and do [06213] them; and ye shall dwell [03427] in the land [0776] in safety [0983].
19 And the land [0776] shall yield [05414] her fruit [06529], and ye shall eat [0398] your fill [07648], and dwell [03427] therein in safety [0983].
14 That I will give [05414] you the rain [04306] of your land [0776] in his due season [06256], the first rain [03138] and the latter rain [04456], that thou mayest gather [0622] in thy corn [01715], and thy wine [08492], and thine oil [03323].
3 After the doings [04639] of the land [0776] of Egypt [04714], wherein ye dwelt [03427], shall ye not do [06213]: and after the doings [04639] of the land [0776] of Canaan [03667], whither I bring [0935] you, shall ye not do [06213]: neither shall ye walk [03212] in their ordinances [02708].
3 If ye walk [03212] in my statutes [02708], and keep [08104] my commandments [04687], and do [06213] them;
4 Then I will give [05414] you rain [01653] in due season [06256], and the land [0776] shall yield [05414] her increase [02981], and the trees [06086] of the field [07704] shall yield [05414] their fruit [06529].
15 And if ye shall despise [03988] my statutes [02708], or if your soul [05315] abhor [01602] my judgments [04941], so that ye will not do [06213] all my commandments [04687], but that ye break [06565] my covenant [01285]:
