A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882]
Gird yourselves--namely, with sackcloth; as in Isa 32:11, the ellipsis is supplied (compare Jer 4:8).

lament, ye priests--as it is your duty to set the example to others; also as the guilt was greater, and a greater scandal was occasioned, by your sin to the cause of God.

come--the Septuagint, "enter" the house of God (compare Joe 1:14).

lie all night in sackcloth--so Ahab (Kg1 21:27).

ministers of my God-- (Co1 9:13). Joel claims authority for his doctrine; it is in God's name and by His mission I speak to you.

13 Do ye [1492] not [3756] know [1492] that [3754] they which minister [2038] about holy things [2413] live [2068] of the things of [1537] the temple [2411]? and they which wait [4332] at the altar [2379] are partakers [4829] with the altar [2379]?
27 And it came to pass, when Ahab [0256] heard [08085] those words [01697], that he rent [07167] his clothes [0899], and put [07760] sackcloth [08242] upon his flesh [01320], and fasted [06684], and lay [07901] in sackcloth [08242], and went [01980] softly [0328].
14 Sanctify [06942] ye a fast [06685], call [07121] a solemn assembly [06116], gather [0622] the elders [02205] and all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and cry [02199] unto the LORD [03068],
8 For this gird [02296] you with sackcloth [08242], lament [05594] and howl [03213]: for the fierce [02740] anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] is not turned back [07725] from us.
11 Tremble [02729], ye women that are at ease [07600]; be troubled [07264], ye careless ones [0982]: strip [06584] you, and make you bare [06209], and gird [02290] sackcloth upon your loins [02504].
26 My flesh [07607] and my heart [03824] faileth [03615]: but God [0430] is the strength [06697] of my heart [03824], and my portion [02506] for ever [05769].
27 Who [3739] needeth [2192] [318] not [3756] daily [2596] [2250], as [5618] those high priests [749], to offer up [399] sacrifice [2378], first [4386] for [5228] his own [2398] sins [266], and then [1899] for the people's [2992]: for [1063] this [5124] he did [4160] once [2178], when he offered up [399] himself [1438].
26 O daughter [01323] of my people [05971], gird [02296] thee with sackcloth [08242], and wallow [06428] thyself in ashes [0665]: make [06213] thee mourning [060], as for an only son [03173], most bitter [08563] lamentation [04553]: for the spoiler [07703] shall suddenly [06597] come [0935] upon us.
8 For this gird [02296] you with sackcloth [08242], lament [05594] and howl [03213]: for the fierce [02740] anger [0639] of the LORD [03068] is not turned back [07725] from us.
12 And in that day [03117] did the Lord [0136] GOD [03069] of hosts [06635] call [07121] to weeping [01065], and to mourning [04553], and to baldness [07144], and to girding [02296] with sackcloth [08242]:
36 Seven [07651] days [03117] ye shall offer [07126] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: on the eighth [08066] day [03117] shall be an holy [06944] convocation [04744] unto you; and ye shall offer [07126] an offering made by fire [0801] unto the LORD [03068]: it is a solemn assembly [06116]; and ye shall do [06213] no servile [05656] work [04399] therein.
9 The meat offering [04503] and the drink offering [05262] is cut off [03772] from the house [01004] of the LORD [03068]; the priests [03548], the LORD'S [03068] ministers [08334], mourn [056].
17 Let the priests [03548], the ministers [08334] of the LORD [03068], weep [01058] between the porch [0197] and the altar [04196], and let them say [0559], Spare [02347] thy people [05971], O LORD [03068], and give [05414] not thine heritage [05159] to reproach [02781], that the heathen [01471] should rule over [04910] them: wherefore should they say [0559] among the people [05971], Where is their God [0430]?
8 Lament [0421] like a virgin [01330] girded [02296] with sackcloth [08242] for the husband [01167] of her youth [05271].
14 Sanctify [06942] ye a fast [06685], call [07121] a solemn assembly [06116], gather [0622] the elders [02205] and all the inhabitants [03427] of the land [0776] into the house [01004] of the LORD [03068] your God [0430], and cry [02199] unto the LORD [03068],
13 Gird [02296] yourselves, and lament [05594], ye priests [03548]: howl [03213], ye ministers [08334] of the altar [04196]: come [0935], lie all night [03885] in sackcloth [08242], ye ministers [08334] of my God [0430]: for the meat offering [04503] and the drink offering [05262] is withholden [04513] from the house [01004] of your God [0430].
19 O LORD [03068], to thee will I cry [07121]: for the fire [0784] hath devoured [0398] the pastures [04999] of the wilderness [04057], and the flame [03852] hath burned [03857] all the trees [06086] of the field [07704].
