In giving some better traits in Nebuchadnezzar's character, Daniel agrees with Jer 39:11; Jer 42:12.
changed the king's word--have made the king's attempt to coerce into obedience vain. Have set aside his word (so "alter . . . word," Ezr 6:11) from regard to God. Nebuchadnezzar now admits that God's law should be obeyed, rather than his (Act 5:29).
yielded . . . bodies--namely, to the fire.
not serve--by sacrificing.
nor worship--by prostration of the body. Decision for God at last gains the respect even of the worldly (Pro 16:7). |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach ... - On the characteristic of mind thus evinced by this monarch, see the notes and practical remarks at Dan 2:46-47.
Who hath sent his angel - This proves that the king regarded this mysterious fourth personage as an angel, and that he used the phrase Dan 3:25 "is like the son of God" only in that sense. That an angel should be employed on an embassage of this kind, we have seen, is in accordance with the current statements of the Scriptures. Compare "Excursus I." to Prof. Stuart "on the Apocalypse." See also Luk 1:11-20, Luk 1:26-38; Mat 1:20-21; Mat 2:13, Mat 2:19-20; Mat 4:11; Mat 18:10; Act 12:7-15; Gen 32:1-2; Kg2 6:17; Exo 14:19; Exo 23:20; Exo 33:2; Num 20:16; Jos 5:13; Isa 63:9; Dan 10:5-13, Dan 10:20-21; Dan 12:1.
And have changed the king's word - That is, his purpose or command. Their conduct, and the Divine protection in consequence of their conduct, had had the effect wholly to change his purpose toward them. He had resolved to destroy them; he now resolved to honor them. This is referred to by the monarch himself as a remarkable result, as indeed it was - that an Eastern despot, who had resolved on the signal punishment of any of his subjects, should be so entirety changed in his purposes toward them.
And yielded their bodies - The Greek adds here εἰς πῦρ eis pur - "to the fire." So the Arabic. This is doubtless the sense of the passage. The meaning is, that rather than bow clown to worship gods which they regarded as no gods; rather than violate their consciences, and do wrong, they had preferred to be cast into the flames, committing themselves to the protection of God. It is implied here that they had done this voluntarily, and that they might easily have avoided it if they had chosen to obey the king. He had given them time to deliberate on the subject Dan 3:14-15, and he knew that they had resolved to pursue the course which they did from principle, no matter what might be the results Dan 3:16-18. This strength of principle - this obedience to the dictates of conscience - this determination not to do wrong at any hazard - he could not but respect; and this is a remarkable instance to show that a firm and steady course in doing what is right will command the respect of even wicked men. This monarch, with all his pride, and haughtiness, and tyranny, had not a few generous qualities, and some of the finest illustrations of human nature were furnished by him.
That they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God - They gave up their bodies to the flame rather than do this. |

Commentary on the Old Testament, by Carl Friedrich Keil and Franz Delitzsch [1857-78] |
The impression made by this event on Nebuchadnezzar.
The marvellous deliverance of the three from the flames of the furnace produced such an impression on Nebuchadnezzar, that he changed his earlier and humbler judgment (Dan 3:15) regarding the God of the Jews, and spoke now in praise of the might of this God. For at the same time he not only openly announced that He had saved (Dan 3:28) His servants, but also by an edict, issued to all the peoples of his kingdom, he forbade on pain of death the doing of any dishonour to the God of the Jews (Dan 3:29). Nebuchadnezzar, however, did not turn to the true God. He neither acknowledged Jehovah as the only, or the alone true God, nor did he command Him to be worshipped. He only declared Him to be a God who is able to save His servants as no other could, and merely forbade the despising and reviling of this God. Whoever speaks שׁלה, that which is erroneous or unjust, against the God of Shadrach, etc., shall be put to death. שׁלה, from שׁלה, to err, to commit a fault, is changed in the Keri into שׁלוּ, which occurs in Dan 6:5 and Ezr 4:22, and in the Targg.; but without sufficient ground, since with other words both forms are found together, e.g., ארמלא, vidua, with ארמלוּ, viduitas. According to this, שׁלוּ in abstr. means the error; שׁלה in concr., the erroneous. Hitz. finds the command partly too narrow, partly quite unsuitable, because an error, a simple oversight, should find pardon as soon as possible. But the distinction between a fault arising from mistake and one arising from a bad intention does not accord with the edict of an Oriental despot, which must be in decided terms, so that there may be no room in cases of transgression for an appeal to a mere oversight. Still less importance is to be attached to the objection that the carrying out of the command may have had its difficulties. but by such difficulties the historical character of the narrative is not brought under suspicion. As the Chaldeans in this case had watched the Jews and accused them of disobedience, so also could the Jews scattered throughout the kingdom bring before the tribunal the heathen who blasphemed their God.
Dan 3:29-30
Regarding the collocation of the words עם אמּה ו, see under Dan 3:4; and regarding the Nymid@fha and the threatened punishment, see under Dan 2:5. כּדּנה we regard, with the lxx, Theodot., Vulg., and old interpreters, as a fem. adverbial: οὕτως, ita, as it occurs in Dan 2:10; Ezr 5:7, and Jer 10:11. The interpreting it as masculine, as this God, does not correspond with the heathen consciousness of God, to which a God perceptible by sight was more appropriate than a God invisible (Kran.). The history concludes (Dan 3:30) with the remark that Nebuchadnezzar now regarded the three men with the greatest favour. In what way he manifested his regard for them is not stated, inasmuch as this is not necessary to the object of the narrative. הצלח with ל, to give to any one happiness, prosperity, to cause him to be fortunate.
If we attentively consider the import of this narrative in its bearing on the history of the kingdom of God, we learn how the true worshippers of the Lord under the dominion of the world-power could and would come into difficulties, imperilling life, between the demands of the lords of this world and the duties they owe to God. But we also learn, that if in these circumstances they remain faithful to their God, they will in a wonderful manner be protected by Him; while He will reveal His omnipotence so gloriously, that even the heathen world-rulers will be constrained to recognise their God and to give Him glory. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Blessed be the God of Shadrach, etc. - Here is a noble testimony from a heathen. And what produced it? The intrepidly pious conduct of these three noble Jews. Had they been time-servers, the name of the true God had not been known in Babylon. What honor does the Lord put on them that are steadfast in the faith! |
7 When a man's [0376] ways [01870] please [07521] the LORD [03068], he maketh even his enemies [0341] to be at peace [07999] with him.
29 Then [1161] Peter [4074] and [2532] the other apostles [652] answered [611] and said [2036], We ought [1163] to obey [3980] God [2316] rather [3123] than [2228] men [444].
11 Also [04481] I have made [07761] a decree [02942], that whosoever [03606] [0606] shall alter [08133] this [01836] word [06600], let timber [0636] be pulled down [05256] from [04481] his house [01005], and being set up [02211], let him be hanged [04223] thereon [05922]; and let his house [01005] be made [05648] a dunghill [05122] for [05922] this [01836].
12 And I will shew [05414] mercies [07356] unto you, that he may have mercy [07355] upon you, and cause you to return [07725] to your own land [0127].
11 Now Nebuchadrezzar [05019] king [04428] of Babylon [0894] gave charge [06680] concerning Jeremiah [03414] to [03027] Nebuzaradan [05018] the captain [07227] of the guard [02876], saying [0559],
16 Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], answered [06032] and said [0560] to the king [04430], O Nebuchadnezzar [05020], we [0586] are not [03809] careful [02818] to answer [08421] thee in [05922] this [01836] matter [06600].
17 If [02006] it be so, our God [0426] whom we [0586] serve [06399] is [0383] able [03202] to deliver [07804] us from [04481] the burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861], and [04481] he will deliver [07804] us out of [04481] thine hand [03028], O king [04430].
18 But if [02006] not [03809], be it [01934] known [03046] unto thee, O king [04430], that we will [0383] not [03809] serve [06399] thy gods [0426], nor [03809] worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] which thou hast set up [06966].
14 Nebuchadnezzar [05020] spake [06032] and said [0560] unto them, Is it true [06656], O Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], do not [03809] ye [0383] serve [06399] my gods [0426], nor [03809] worship [05457] the golden [01722] image [06755] which I have set [06966] up?
15 Now [03705] if [02006] ye be [0383] ready [06263] that at what time [05732] ye hear [08086] the sound [07032] of the cornet [07162], flute [04953], harp [07030] [07030], sackbut [05443], psaltery [06460], and dulcimer [05481], and all [03606] kinds [02178] of musick [02170], ye fall down [05308] and worship [05457] the image [06755] which I have made [05648]; well: but if [02006] ye worship [05457] not [03809], ye shall be cast [07412] the same hour [08160] into the midst [01459] of a burning [03345] fiery [05135] furnace [0861]; and who [04479] is that God [0426] that shall deliver [07804] you out of [04481] my hands [03028]?
1 And at that time [06256] shall Michael [04317] stand up [05975], the great [01419] prince [08269] which standeth [05975] for the children [01121] of thy people [05971]: and there shall be [01961] a time [06256] of trouble [06869], such as never was since there was a nation [01471] even to that same time [06256]: and at that time [06256] thy people [05971] shall be delivered [04422], every one that shall be found [04672] written [03789] in the book [05612].
20 Then said [0559] he, Knowest [03045] thou wherefore I come [0935] unto thee? and now will I return [07725] to fight [03898] with the prince [08269] of Persia [06539]: and when I am gone forth [03318], lo, the prince [08269] of Grecia [03120] shall come [0935].
21 But [061] I will shew [05046] thee that which is noted [07559] in the scripture [03791] of truth [0571]: and there is none [0259] that holdeth [02388] with me in these things, but Michael [04317] your prince [08269].
5 Then I lifted up [05375] mine eyes [05869], and looked [07200], and behold a certain [0259] man [0376] clothed [03847] in linen [0906], whose loins [04975] were girded [02296] with fine gold [03800] of Uphaz [0210]:
6 His body [01472] also was like the beryl [08658], and his face [06440] as the appearance [04758] of lightning [01300], and his eyes [05869] as lamps [03940] of fire [0784], and his arms [02220] and his feet [04772] like in colour [05869] to polished [07044] brass [05178], and the voice [06963] of his words [01697] like the voice [06963] of a multitude [01995].
7 And I Daniel [01840] alone saw [07200] the vision [04759]: for the men [0582] that were with me saw [07200] not the vision [04759]; but [061] a great [01419] quaking [02731] fell [05307] upon them, so that they fled [01272] to hide [02244] themselves.
8 Therefore I was left alone [07604], and saw [07200] this great [01419] vision [04759], and there remained [07604] no strength [03581] in me: for my comeliness [01935] was turned [02015] in me into corruption [04889], and I retained [06113] no strength [03581].
9 Yet heard [08085] I the voice [06963] of his words [01697]: and when I heard [08085] the voice [06963] of his words [01697], then was I in a deep sleep [07290] on my face [06440], and my face [06440] toward the ground [0776].
10 And, behold, an hand [03027] touched [05060] me, which set [05128] me upon my knees [01290] and upon the palms [03709] of my hands [03027].
11 And he said [0559] unto me, O Daniel [01840], a man [0376] greatly beloved [02532], understand [0995] the words [01697] that I speak [01696] unto thee, and stand [05975] upright [05977]: for unto thee am I now sent [07971]. And when he had spoken [01696] this word [01697] unto me, I stood [05975] trembling [07460].
12 Then said [0559] he unto me, Fear [03372] not, Daniel [01840]: for from the first [07223] day [03117] that thou didst set [05414] thine heart [03820] to understand [0995], and to chasten [06031] thyself before [06440] thy God [0430], thy words [01697] were heard [08085], and I am come [0935] for thy words [01697].
13 But the prince [08269] of the kingdom [04438] of Persia [06539] withstood [05975] me one [0259] and twenty [06242] days [03117]: but, lo, Michael [04317], one [0259] of the chief [07223] princes [08269], came [0935] to help [05826] me; and I remained [03498] there with [0681] the kings [04428] of Persia [06539].
9 In all their affliction [06869] he was afflicted [06862], and the angel [04397] of his presence [06440] saved [03467] them: in his love [0160] and in his pity [02551] he redeemed [01350] them; and he bare [05190] them, and carried [05375] them all the days [03117] of old [05769].
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua [03091] was by Jericho [03405], that he lifted up [05375] his eyes [05869] and looked [07200], and, behold, there stood [05975] a man [0376] over against him with his sword [02719] drawn [08025] in his hand [03027]: and Joshua [03091] went [03212] unto him, and said [0559] unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries [06862]?
16 And when we cried [06817] unto the LORD [03068], he heard [08085] our voice [06963], and sent [07971] an angel [04397], and hath brought us forth [03318] out of Egypt [04714]: and, behold, we are in Kadesh [06946], a city [05892] in the uttermost [07097] of thy border [01366]:
2 And I will send [07971] an angel [04397] before [06440] thee; and I will drive out [01644] the Canaanite [03669], the Amorite [0567], and the Hittite [02850], and the Perizzite [06522], the Hivite [02340], and the Jebusite [02983]:
20 Behold, I send [07971] an Angel [04397] before [06440] thee, to keep [08104] thee in the way [01870], and to bring [0935] thee into the place [04725] which I have prepared [03559].
19 And the angel [04397] of God [0430], which went [01980] before [06440] the camp [04264] of Israel [03478], removed [05265] and went [03212] behind [0310] them; and the pillar [05982] of the cloud [06051] went [05265] from before their face [06440], and stood [05975] behind [0310] them:
17 And Elisha [0477] prayed [06419], and said [0559], LORD [03068], I pray thee, open [06491] his eyes [05869], that he may see [07200]. And the LORD [03068] opened [06491] the eyes [05869] of the young man [05288]; and he saw [07200]: and, behold, the mountain [02022] was full [04390] of horses [05483] and chariots [07393] of fire [0784] round about [05439] Elisha [0477].
1 And Jacob [03290] went [01980] on his way [01870], and the angels [04397] of God [0430] met [06293] him.
2 And when Jacob [03290] saw them [07200], he said [0559], This is God's [0430] host [04264]: and he called [07121] the name [08034] of that place [04725] Mahanaim [04266].
7 And [2532], behold [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] came upon [2186] him, and [2532] a light [5457] shined [2989] in [1722] the prison [3612]: and [1161] he smote [3960] Peter [4074] on the side [4125], and raised [1453] him [846] up [1453], saying [3004], Arise up [450] quickly [1722] [5034]. And [2532] his [846] chains [254] fell off [1601] from [1537] his hands [5495].
8 And [5037] the angel [32] said [2036] unto [4314] him [846], Gird thyself [4024], and [2532] bind on [5265] thy [4675] sandals [4547]. And [1161] so [3779] he did [4160]. And [2532] he saith [3004] unto him [846], Cast [4016] thy garment [2440] about [4016] thee [4675], and [2532] follow [190] me [3427].
9 And [2532] he went out [1831], and followed [190] him [846]; and [2532] wist [1492] not [3756] that [3754] it was [2076] true [227] which [3588] was done [1096] by [1223] the angel [32]; but [1161] thought [1380] he saw [991] a vision [3705].
10 When [1161] they were past [1330] the first [4413] and [2532] the second [1208] ward [5438], they came [2064] unto [1909] the iron [4603] gate [4439] that leadeth [5342] unto [1519] the city [4172]; which [3748] opened [455] to them [846] of his own accord [844]: and [2532] they went out [1831], and passed on through [4281] one [3391] street [4505]; and [2532] forthwith [2112] the angel [32] departed [868] from [575] him [846].
11 And [2532] when Peter [4074] was come [1096] to [1722] himself [1438], he said [2036], Now [3568] I know [1492] of a surety [230], that [3754] the Lord [2962] hath sent [1821] his [846] angel [32], and [2532] hath delivered [1807] me [3165] out of [1537] the hand [5495] of Herod [2264], and [2532] from all [3956] the expectation [4329] of the people [2992] of the Jews [2453].
12 And [5037] when he had considered [4894] the thing, he came [2064] to [1909] the house [3614] of Mary [3137] the mother [3384] of John [2491], whose surname was [1941] Mark [3138]; where [3757] many [2425] were [2258] gathered together [4867] praying [2532] [4336].
13 And [1161] as Peter [4074] knocked at [2925] the door [2374] of the gate [4440], a damsel [3814] came [4334] to hearken [5219], named [3686] Rhoda [4498].
14 And [2532] when she knew [1921] Peter's [4074] voice [5456], she opened [455] not [3756] the gate [4440] for [575] gladness [5479], but [1161] ran in [1532], and told how [518] Peter [4074] stood [2476] before [4253] the gate [4440].
15 And [1161] they said [2036] unto [4314] her [846], Thou art mad [3105]. But [1161] she constantly affirmed [1340] that it was [2192] even so [3779]. Then [1161] said they [3004], It is [2076] his [846] angel [32].
10 Take heed [3708] that ye despise [2706] not [3361] one [1520] of these [5130] little ones [3398]; for [1063] I say [3004] unto you [5213], That [3754] in [1722] heaven [3772] their [846] angels [32] do always [1223] [3956] behold [991] the face [4383] of my [3450] Father [3962] which [3588] is in [1722] heaven [3772].
11 Then [5119] the devil [1228] leaveth [863] him [846], and [2532], behold [2400], angels [32] came [4334] and [2532] ministered [1247] unto him [846].
19 But [1161] when Herod [2264] was dead [5053], behold [2400], an angel [32] of the Lord [2962] appeareth [5316] in [2596] a dream [3677] to Joseph [2501] in [1722] Egypt [125],
20 Saying [3004], Arise [1453], and take [3880] the young child [3813] and [2532] his [846] mother [3384], and [2532] go [4198] into [1519] the land [1093] of Israel [2474]: for [1063] they are dead [2348] which [3588] sought [2212] the young child's [3813] life [5590].
13 And [1161] when they [846] were departed [402], behold [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] appeareth [5316] to Joseph [2501] in [2596] a dream [3677], saying [3004], Arise [1453], and take [3880] the young child [3813] and [2532] his [846] mother [3384], and [2532] flee [5343] into [1519] Egypt [125], and [2532] be thou [2468] there [1563] until [2193] I [302] bring [2036] thee [4671] word [2036]: for [1063] Herod [2264] will [3195] seek [2212] the young child [3813] to destroy [622] him [846].
20 But [1161] while he [846] thought on [1760] these things [5023], behold [2400], the angel [32] of the Lord [2962] appeared [5316] unto him [846] in [2596] a dream [3677], saying [3004], Joseph [2501], thou son [5207] of David [1138], fear [5399] not [3361] to take [3880] unto thee [4675] Mary [3137] thy wife [1135]: for [1063] that which is conceived [1080] in [1722] her [846] is [2076] of [1537] the Holy [40] Ghost [4151].
21 And [1161] she shall bring forth [5088] a son [5207], and [2532] thou shalt call [2564] his [846] name [3686] JESUS [2424]: for [1063] he [846] shall save [4982] his [846] people [2992] from [575] their [846] sins [266].
26 And [1161] in [1722] the sixth [1623] month [3376] the angel [32] Gabriel [1043] was sent [649] from [5259] God [2316] unto [1519] a city [4172] of Galilee [1056], named [3739] [3686] Nazareth [3478],
27 To [4314] a virgin [3933] espoused [3423] to a man [435] whose [3739] name [3686] was Joseph [2501], of [1537] the house [3624] of David [1138]; and [2532] the virgin's [3933] name [3686] was Mary [3137].
28 And [2532] the angel [32] came in [1525] unto [4314] her [846], and said [2036], Hail [5463], thou that art highly favoured [5487], the Lord [2962] is with [3326] thee [4675]: blessed [2127] art thou [4771] among [1722] women [1135].
29 And [1161] when she saw [1492] him, she was troubled [1298] at [1909] his [846] saying [3056], and [2532] cast in her mind [1260] what manner [4217] of salutation [783] this [3778] should be [1498].
30 And [2532] the angel [32] said [2036] unto her [846], Fear [5399] not [3361], Mary [3137]: for [1063] thou hast found [2147] favour [5485] with [3844] God [2316].
31 And [2532], behold [2400], thou shalt conceive [4815] in [1722] thy womb [1064], and [2532] bring forth [5088] a son [5207], and [2532] shalt call [2564] his [846] name [3686] JESUS [2424].
32 He [3778] shall be [2071] great [3173], and [2532] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of the Highest [5310]: and [2532] the Lord [2962] God [2316] shall give [1325] unto him [846] the throne [2362] of his [846] father [3962] David [1138]:
33 And [2532] he shall reign [936] over [1909] the house [3624] of Jacob [2384] for [1519] ever [165]; and [2532] of his [846] kingdom [932] there shall be [2071] no [3756] end [5056].
34 Then [1161] said [2036] Mary [3137] unto [4314] the angel [32], How [4459] shall [2071] this [5124] be [2071], seeing [1893] I know [1097] not [3756] a man [435]?
35 And [2532] the angel [32] answered [611] and said [2036] unto her [846], The Holy [40] Ghost [4151] shall come [1904] upon [1909] thee [4571], and [2532] the power [1411] of the Highest [5310] shall overshadow [1982] thee [4671]: therefore [1352] also [2532] that holy thing [40] which shall be born [1080] of [1537] thee [4675] shall be called [2564] the Son [5207] of God [2316].
36 And [2532], behold [2400], thy [4675] cousin [4773] Elisabeth [1665], she [846] hath [4815] also [2532] conceived [4815] a son [5207] in [1722] her [846] old age [1094]: and [2532] this [3778] is [2076] the sixth [1623] month [3376] with her [846], who [3588] was called [2564] barren [4723].
37 For [3754] with [3844] God [2316] nothing [3756] [3956] [4487] shall be impossible [101].
38 And [1161] Mary [3137] said [2036], Behold [2400] the handmaid [1399] of the Lord [2962]; be it [1096] unto me [3427] according [2596] to thy [4675] word [4487]. And [2532] the angel [32] departed [565] from [575] her [846].
11 And [1161] there appeared [3700] unto him [846] an angel [32] of the Lord [2962] standing [2476] on [1537] the right side [1188] of the altar [2379] of incense [2368].
12 And [2532] when Zacharias [2197] saw [1492] him, he was troubled [5015], and [2532] fear [5401] fell [1968] upon [1909] him [846].
13 But [1161] the angel [32] said [2036] unto [4314] him [846], Fear [5399] not [3361], Zacharias [2197]: for [1360] thy [4675] prayer [1162] is heard [1522]; and [2532] thy [4675] wife [1135] Elisabeth [1665] shall bear [1080] thee [4671] a son [5207], and [2532] thou shalt call [2564] his [846] name [3686] John [2491].
14 And [2532] thou [4671] shalt have [2071] joy [5479] and [2532] gladness [20]; and [2532] many [4183] shall rejoice [5463] at [1909] his [846] birth [1083].
15 For [1063] he shall be [2071] great [3173] in the sight [1799] of the Lord [2962], and [2532] shall drink [4095] neither [3364] wine [3631] nor [2532] strong drink [4608]; and [2532] he shall be filled [4130] with the Holy [40] Ghost [4151], even [2089] from [1537] his [846] mother's [3384] womb [2836].
16 And [2532] many [4183] of the children [5207] of Israel [2474] shall he turn [1994] to [1909] the Lord [2962] their [846] God [2316].
17 And [2532] he [846] shall go [4281] before [1799] him [846] in [1722] the spirit [4151] and [2532] power [1411] of Elias [2243], to turn [1994] the hearts [2588] of the fathers [3962] to [1909] the children [5043], and [2532] the disobedient [545] to [1722] the wisdom [5428] of the just [1342]; to make ready [2090] a people [2992] prepared [2680] for the Lord [2962].
18 And [2532] Zacharias [2197] said [2036] unto [4314] the angel [32], Whereby [2596] [5101] shall I know [1097] this [5124]? for [1063] I [1473] am [1510] an old man [4246], and [2532] my [3450] wife [1135] well stricken [4260] in [1722] years [2250] [846].
19 And [2532] the angel [32] answering [611] said [2036] unto him [846], I [1473] am [1510] Gabriel [1043], that stand [3936] in the presence [1799] of God [2316]; and [2532] am sent [649] to speak [2980] unto [4314] thee [4571], and [2532] to shew [2097] thee [4671] these [5023] glad tidings [2097].
20 And [2532], behold [2400], thou [2071] shalt be dumb [4623], and [2532] not [3361] able [1410] to speak [2980], until [891] the day [2250] that [3739] these things [5023] shall be performed [1096], because [473] [3739] thou believest [4100] not [3756] my [3450] words [3056], which [3748] shall be fulfilled [4137] in [1519] their [846] season [2540].
25 He answered [06032] and said [0560], Lo [01888], I [0576] see [02370] four [0703] men [01400] loose [08271], walking [01981] in the midst [01459] of the fire [05135], and they have [0383] no [03809] hurt [02257]; and the form [07299] of the fourth [07244] is like [01821] the Son [01247] of God [0426].
46 Then [0116] the king [04430] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] fell [05308] upon [05922] his face [0600], and worshipped [05457] Daniel [01841], and commanded [0560] that they should offer [05260] an oblation [04504] and sweet odours [05208] unto him.
47 The king [04430] answered [06032] unto Daniel [01841], and said [0560], Of [04481] a truth [07187] it is, that [01768] your God [0426] is a God [0426] of gods [0426], and a Lord [04756] of kings [04430], and a revealer [01541] of secrets [07328], seeing thou couldest [03202] reveal [01541] this [01836] secret [07328].
4 Being made [1096] so much [5118] better than [2909] the angels [32], as [3745] he hath by inheritance obtained [2816] a more excellent [1313] name [3686] than [3844] they [846].
30 Then [0116] the king [04430] promoted [06744] Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], in the province [04083] of Babylon [0895].
11 Thus [01836] shall ye say [0560] unto them, The gods [0426] that have not [03809] made [05648] the heavens [08065] and the earth [0778], even they shall perish [07] from the earth [0772], and from under [08460] these [0429] heavens [08065].
7 They sent [07972] a letter [06600] unto [05922] him, wherein [01459] was written [03790] thus [01836]; Unto Darius [01868] the king [04430], all [03606] peace [08001].
10 The Chaldeans [03779] answered [06032] before [06925] the king [04430], and said [0560], There is [0383] not [03809] a man [0606] upon [05922] the earth [03007] that can [03202] shew [02324] the king's [04430] matter [04406]: therefore [06903] [01768] there is no [03809] king [04430], lord [07229], nor ruler [07990], that asked [07593] such [01836] things [04406] at any [03606] magician [02749], or astrologer [0826], or Chaldean [03779].
5 The king [04430] answered [06032] and said [0560] to the Chaldeans [03779], The thing [04406] is gone [0230] from me [04481]: if [02006] ye will not [03809] make known [03046] unto me the dream [02493], with the interpretation [06591] thereof, ye shall be cut [05648] in pieces [01917], and your houses [01005] shall be made [07761] a dunghill [05122].
4 Then an herald [03744] cried [07123] aloud [02429], To you it is commanded [0560], O people [05972], nations [0524], and languages [03961],
29 Therefore I [04481] make [07761] a decree [02942], That every [03606] people [05972], nation [0524], and language [03961], which speak [0560] any thing amiss [07960] [07955] against [05922] the God [0426] of Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], shall be cut [05648] in pieces [01917], and their houses [01005] shall be made [07739] a dunghill [05122]: because [06903] [03606] there is [0383] no [03809] other [0321] God [0426] that can [03202] deliver [05338] after this [01836] sort.
30 Then [0116] the king [04430] promoted [06744] Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], in the province [04083] of Babylon [0895].
22 Take heed [01934] [02095] now that ye fail [07960] not to do [05922] [05648] this [01836]: why [04101] should damage [02257] grow [07680] to the hurt [05142] of the kings [04430]?
5 Then [0116] said [0560] these [0479] men [01400], We shall not [03809] find [07912] any [03606] occasion [05931] against [05922] this [01836] Daniel [01841], except [03861] we find [07912] it against him concerning the law [01882] of his God [0426].
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar [05020] spake [06032], and said [0560], Blessed [01289] be the God [0426] of Shadrach [07715], Meshach [04336], and Abednego [05665], who hath sent [07972] his angel [04398], and delivered [07804] his servants [05649] that trusted [07365] in him [05922], and have changed [08133] the king's [04430] word [04406], and yielded [03052] their bodies [01655], that they might not [03809] serve [06399] nor [03809] worship [05457] any [03606] god [0426], except [03861] their own God [0426].
