Summary Of Commentaries Associated With The Selected Verse
A Commentary, Critical, Practical, and Explanatory on the Old and New Testaments, by Robert Jamieson, A.R. Fausset and David Brown [1882] |
Lord of kings--The world power shall at last have to acknowledge this (Rev 17:14; Rev 19:16); even as Nebuchadnezzar, who had been the God-appointed "king of kings" (Dan 2:37), but who had abused the trust, is constrained by God's servant to acknowledge that God is the true "Lord of kings." |
Notes on the Bible, by Albert Barnes, [1834] |
The king answered unto Daniel - Answered either what he had said in the interpretation of the dream, or "possibly" something that he had said in regard to the impropriety of offering this homage to him. Compare the notes at Dan 2:46. It is certain that, for some cause. whatever might have been the homage which he was disposed to render to Daniel, his thoughts were soon turned from him to the true God, and to an acknowledgment of him as superior to all other beings. He seems, at least, instantly to have reflected on what Daniel had himself said Dan 2:30, and to have remembered that religious homage was due, not to Daniel, but to the God who had communicated the secret to him.
Of a truth it is - It is truly so. This had been shown by the manner in which this secret was disclosed.
That your God is a God of gods - Is superior to all other gods; is supreme over all. Compare Rev 17:14; Ti1 6:15. The idea is, that whatever subordinate beings there may be, He is supreme.
And a Lord of kings - Supreme over kings. They are all inferior to him, and subject to his control.
And a revealer of secrets - One of the attributes of divinity. See the notes at Dan 2:28.
Seeing thou couldest reveal this secret - A secret which the wisest men of the realm had sought in vain to disclose. The fact that a professed servant of God had been able to do this showed that God was himself supreme, and worthy of adoration. We have here, then, an instance in which a proud and haughty pagan monarch was brought to an acknowledgment of the true God, and was constrained to render him homage. This was a result which it was evidently intended to reach in the whole transaction; in the dream itself; in the fact that the wise men of Babylon could not interpret it; and in the fact that an acknowledged servant of the Most High had been enabled to make the disclosure. The instance is instructive, as showing to what extent a mind clearly not under the influence of any genuine piety - for subsequent events showed that no "permanent" effects were produced on him, and that he was still an idolater Dan. 3, and a most proud and haughty man Dan. 4 - may be brought to acknowledge God. See the remarks at the end of the Dan. 7. |
Explanatory Notes on the Whole Bible, by John Wesley [1754-65] |
God of gods - The supreme God of all the world, above Baal and all other gods. Lord of kings - The word in the Syriack signifies, high Lord, seeing he is the highest king of all the earth. |
Adam Clarke Commentary on the Whole Bible - Published 1810-1826 |
Your God is a God of gods - He is greater than all others.
And a Lord of kings - He governs both in heaven and earth. |
37 Thou [0607], O king [04430], art a king [04430] of kings [04430]: for the God [0426] of heaven [08065] hath given [03052] thee a kingdom [04437], power [02632], and strength [08632], and glory [03367].
16 And [2532] he hath [2192] on [1909] his vesture [2440] and [2532] on [1909] his [846] thigh [3382] a name [3686] written [1125], KING [935] OF KINGS [935], AND [2532] LORD [2962] OF LORDS [2962].
14 These [3778] shall make war [4170] with [3326] the Lamb [721], and [2532] the Lamb [721] shall overcome [3528] them [846]: for [3754] he is [2076] Lord [2962] of lords [2962], and [2532] King [935] of kings [935]: and [2532] they that are with [3326] him [846] are called [2822], and [2532] chosen [1588], and [2532] faithful [4103].
28 But [01297] there is [0383] a God [0426] in heaven [08065] that revealeth [01541] secrets [07328], and maketh known [03046] to the king [04430] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] what [04101] shall be [01934] in the latter [0320] days [03118]. Thy dream [02493], and the visions [02376] of thy head [07217] upon [05922] thy bed [04903], are these [01836];
15 Which [3739] in his [2398] times [2540] he shall shew [1166], who [3588] is the blessed [3107] and [2532] only [3441] Potentate [1413], the King [935] of kings [936], and [2532] Lord [2962] of lords [2961];
30 But as for me [0576], this [01836] secret [07328] is not [03809] revealed [01541] to me for any wisdom [02452] that I have [0383] more than [04481] any [03606] living [02417], but [03861] for their sakes [01701] that [05922] shall make known [03046] the interpretation [06591] to the king [04430], and that thou mightest know [03046] the thoughts [07476] of thy heart [03825].
46 Then [0116] the king [04430] Nebuchadnezzar [05020] fell [05308] upon [05922] his face [0600], and worshipped [05457] Daniel [01841], and commanded [0560] that they should offer [05260] an oblation [04504] and sweet odours [05208] unto him.
